The Effectiveness Of Using Speech-To-Text Technology To Support Writing Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Jennifer Adams Nov 2017

The Effectiveness Of Using Speech-To-Text Technology To Support Writing Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Jennifer Adams

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of using Speech Recognition (SR) technology to create more cohesive writing for students with learning disabilities as compared to the use of paper and pencil. Six students with IEPs from general education classrooms, ages 7 years old to 9 years old, participated in this study.

Prior to the start of this study, the subjects completed a baseline assessment to measure their expressive writing abilities in response to a narrative prompt. The students were required to include a topic sentence, beginning, middle, and end, and demonstrate understanding of the conventions of writing. There was not a …

Impact Of Corporate Power On Consumption, Debt And Inequality: Political-Economic Model Of Ccc, Franci Porenta Nov 2017

Impact Of Corporate Power On Consumption, Debt And Inequality: Political-Economic Model Of Ccc, Franci Porenta

Economic and Business Review

The literature is abundant with studies about income inequality, consumption, public and household debt but scarce with studies about the corporations and their corporate power. This paper shows that corporate power influences increased consumption in order to secure its investments and provide sufficient demand. Secondly, rising consumerism influences growing household and public debt with multiple transmission mechanisms that work simultaneously and reinforce each other. Thirdly, growing household and public debt increase inequality, disabling the government to invest in education, health care, infrastructure or social transfers, and preventing the people from investing in their education or increasing their savings and, consequently, …

Experiential Perspectives Of Teachers In An Inclusive Classroom, Evelyn Ifeoma Nwadinobi Nov 2017

Experiential Perspectives Of Teachers In An Inclusive Classroom, Evelyn Ifeoma Nwadinobi

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Inclusive educational settings have become the norm as schools aim to educate disabled students in environments least restrictive to their development (U.S. Department of Education, 2004). This study was conducted in order to assess teacher perceptions of inclusion academically, socially, and behaviorally for general and special education students. Informed by Sociocultural theory (Vygotsky, 1978), and Integrated Threat Theory (Bustillos & Silvan-Ferrero, 2013), this research aimed to give voice to those most instrumental in implementing inclusion successfully and effectively. Utilizing open-ended interviews and qualitative analyses coded by Excel and NVivo software, the study discovered that teacher participants perceived the main benefit …

Biases In Metallicity Measurements From Global Galaxy Spectra: The Effects Of Flux Weighting And Diffuse Ionized Gas Contamination, Ryan L. L. Sanders, Alice E. Shapley, Kai Zhang, Renbin Yan Nov 2017

Biases In Metallicity Measurements From Global Galaxy Spectra: The Effects Of Flux Weighting And Diffuse Ionized Gas Contamination, Ryan L. L. Sanders, Alice E. Shapley, Kai Zhang, Renbin Yan

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Galaxy metallicity scaling relations provide a powerful tool for understanding galaxy evolution, but obtaining unbiased global galaxy gas-phase oxygen abundances requires proper treatment of the various line-emitting sources within spectroscopic apertures. We present a model framework that treats galaxies as ensembles of H II and diffuse ionized gas (DIG) regions of varying metallicities. These models are based upon empirical relations between line ratios and electron temperature for H II regions, and DIG strong-line ratio relations from SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU data. Flux-weighting effects and DIG contamination can significantly affect properties inferred from global galaxy spectra, biasing metallicity estimates by more than …

The Compton scattering cross section from 4He has been measured with high statistical accuracy over a scattering angle range of 40∘−159∘ using a quasimonoenergetic 61-MeV photon beam at the High Intensity Gamma-Ray Source. The data are interpreted using a phenomenological model sensitive to the dipole isoscalar electromagnetic polarizabilities (αs and βs) of the nucleon. These data can be fit with the model using values of αs and βs that are consistent with the currently accepted values. These data will serve as benchmarks of future calculations from effective field theories and …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

Low-mass stars build a significant fraction of their total mass during short outbursts of enhanced accretion known as FUor and EXor outbursts. FUor objects are characterized by a sudden brightening of ∼5 mag at visible wavelengths within 1 yr and remain bright for decades. EXor objects have lower amplitude outbursts on shorter time-scales. Here we discuss a 1.3 mm Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) mini-survey of eight outbursting sources (three FUors, four EXors, and the borderline object V1647 Ori) in the Orion Molecular Cloud. While previous papers in this series discuss the remarkable molecular outflows observed in the three FUor …

Mode-Sum Prescription For Vacuum Polarization In Black Hole Spacetimes In Even Dimensions, Peter Taylor, Cormac Doran Nov 2017

Mode-Sum Prescription For Vacuum Polarization In Black Hole Spacetimes In Even Dimensions, Peter Taylor, Cormac Doran

Articles

We present a mode-sum regularization prescription for computing the vacuum polarization of a scalar field in static spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes in even dimensions. This is the first general and systematic approach to regularized vacuum polarization in higher even dimensions, building upon a previous scheme we developed for odd dimensions. Things are more complicated here since the even-dimensional propagator possesses logarithmic singularities which must be regularized. However, in spite of this complication, the regularization parameters can be computed in closed form in arbitrary even dimensions and for arbitrary metric function f(r). As an explicit example of our method, we …

Sampling Effort And Uncertainty In Leaf Litterfall Mass And Nutrient Flux In Northern Hardwood Forests, Yang Yang, Ruth D. Yanai, Craig R. See, Mary A. Arthur Nov 2017

Sampling Effort And Uncertainty In Leaf Litterfall Mass And Nutrient Flux In Northern Hardwood Forests, Yang Yang, Ruth D. Yanai, Craig R. See, Mary A. Arthur

Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Designs for litterfall sampling can be improved by understanding the sources of uncertainty in litterfall mass and nutrient concentration. We compared the coefficient of variation of leaf litterfall mass and nutrient concentrations (nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and potassium) at different spatial scales and across years for six northern hardwood species from 23 stands in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA. Stands with steeper slopes (P = 0.01), higher elevations (P = 0.05), and more westerly aspect (P = 0.002) had higher interannual variation in litter mass, probably due to a litter trap design that allowed litter …

The Impact Of Implicit Electricity Market Coupling On The Slovenian-Austrian Border On The Efficiency Of Cross-Border Transmission Capacity Allocation And Social Welfare In Slovenia, Anže Predovnik, Matej Švigelj Nov 2017

The Impact Of Implicit Electricity Market Coupling On The Slovenian-Austrian Border On The Efficiency Of Cross-Border Transmission Capacity Allocation And Social Welfare In Slovenia, Anže Predovnik, Matej Švigelj

Economic and Business Review

On the Slovenian-Austrian border cross-zonal capacities (CZCs) are currently allocated at explicit auctions, although in the future to comply with the European Target Electricity Model one can expect implicit auctions within market coupling to be implemented. Via a simulation, this paper aims to study the impact of implicit electricity market coupling on the Slovenian-Austrian border on the efficiency of CZC allocation and social welfare in Slovenia. The simulation results show that the use of implicit auctions would increase the efficiency of CZC allocation, reduce the price of electricity and increase the volume of trading in the Slovenian electricity exchange market. …

Deformation Of Wood In Compression During Moisture Movement, Hamdan Sinin, Hasan Mahbub, Yew Chew Meng Nov 2017

Deformation Of Wood In Compression During Moisture Movement, Hamdan Sinin, Hasan Mahbub, Yew Chew Meng

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

This work presents the phenomenon of mechano-sorptive strain in the deformation of wood during moisture content (MC) changes. A series of experiments were designed to demonstrate the greatly enhanced deformation due to the mechano- sorptive effect. The purpose of this work is to show the magnitude of mechano-sorptive creep compared to the ordinary viscoelastic creep with applied compressive load. In order to do this, the moisture movement with MC change, moisture movement without MC change and conditions without moisture movement were induced. The unique patterns of strains of various conditions induced in the experiments were observed. The characteristics shown in …

Improving Food Security? Setting Indicators And Observing Change Of Rural Household In Central Sulawesi, Dewi Nur Asih, Stephan Klasen

Forest and Society

Household food security is a critical issue for Indonesia, which is investigated in this study. Many of rural household in Indonesia depends on agricultural sectors and facing challenges of global warming that threatening food security and poverty alleviation in the country. We use panel data at the household level for a sample of households living in Central Sulawesi at the rainforest margin in Indonesia. For the purpose of this study, we apply principal component analysis to develop an indicator of food security and used the index in determining the household’s condition to be persistent food secure or insecure. The findings …

Weak-Value Amplification And Optimal Parameter Estimation In The Presence Of Correlated Noise, Josiah Sinclair, Matin Hallaji, Aephraim M. Steinberg, Jeff Tollaksen, Andrew N. Jordan Nov 2017

Weak-Value Amplification And Optimal Parameter Estimation In The Presence Of Correlated Noise, Josiah Sinclair, Matin Hallaji, Aephraim M. Steinberg, Jeff Tollaksen, Andrew N. Jordan

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We analytically and numerically investigate the performance of weak-value amplification (WVA) and related parameter estimation methods in the presence of temporally correlated noise. WVA is a special instance of a general measurement strategy that involves sorting data into separate subsets based on the outcome of a second “partitioning” measurement. Using a simplified correlated noise model that can be analyzed exactly together with optimal statistical estimators, we compare WVA to a conventional measurement method. We find that WVA indeed yields a much lower variance of the parameter of interest than the conventional technique does, optimized in the absence of any partitioning …

Wavelet Neural Network Model For Yield Spread Forecasting, Firdous Ahmad Shah, Lokenath Debnath Nov 2017

Wavelet Neural Network Model For Yield Spread Forecasting, Firdous Ahmad Shah, Lokenath Debnath

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this study, a hybrid method based on coupling discrete wavelet transforms (DWTs) and artificial neural network (ANN) for yield spread forecasting is proposed. The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) using five different wavelet families is applied to decompose the five different yield spreads constructed at shorter end, longer end, and policy relevant area of the yield curve to eliminate noise from them. The wavelet coefficients are then used as inputs into Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) ANN models to forecast the predictive power of each of these spreads for output growth. We find that the yield spreads constructed at the shorter end and …

Examining The Relationship Between Park Neighborhoods, Features, Cleanliness, And Condition With Observed Weekday Park Usage And Physical Activity: A Case Study, Kerry Hamilton, Andrew T. Kaczynski, Melissa L. Fair, Lucie Levesque

Faculty Publications

Background. Little research has comprehensively explored how park features, quality indicators, and neighborhood environments are associated with observed park usage and physical activity (PA). This case study examined whether weekday park usage and PA differ by neighborhood type, across numerous categories of park features, and according to park feature condition and cleanliness. Methods. Direct observation was used to capture the number of users and PA levels within 143 park features in 6 parks (3 urban, 3 suburban) over the course of six weeks. Audits of park environments assessed the type, condition, and cleanliness of all features and amenities. …

The Mechanical Properties Of Fly Ash Concrete Prepared And Cured At High Temperatures, Munaf D.R., Besari M.S., Iqbap M.M., Kadir And I.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Results of an experimental investigation on the effect of fly ash content, water cement (w/c) ratio of concrete prepared and cured at temperatures of ambience, 40°C and 60°C are presented in this paper. The mechanical properties investigated here include its workability, its behaviour under compression and splitting tension. Microscopic investigations were also carried out using SEM micrographic images to gain understanding of concrete at its microstructural level. The results indicate that high temperature increases early compressive strengths of concrete, but has decreasing effects on the strengths at later ages. The use of fly ash in concretes cast and cured at elevated …

Edge Colorings Of Complete Multipartite Graphs Forbidding Rainbow Cycles, Peter Johnson, Andrew Owens Nov 2017

Edge Colorings Of Complete Multipartite Graphs Forbidding Rainbow Cycles, Peter Johnson, Andrew Owens

Theory & Applications of Graphs

It is well known that if the edges of a finite simple connected graph on n vertices are colored so that no cycle is rainbow, then no more than n-1 colors can appear on the edges. In previous work it has been shown that the essentially different rainbow-cycle-forbidding edge colorings of Kn with n-1 colors appearing are in 1-1 correspondence with (can be encoded by) the (isomorphism classes of) full binary trees with n leafs. In the encoding, the natural Huffman labeling of each tree arising from the assignment of 1 to each leaf plays a role. Very recently …

Examining The Electrical Excitation, Calcium Signaling, And Mechanical Contraction Cycle In A Heart Cell, Kristen Deetz, Nygel Foster, Darius Leftwich, Chad Meyer, Shalin Patel, Carlos Barajas, Matthias K. Gobbert, Zana Coulibaly

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

As the leading cause of death in the United States, heart disease has become a principal concern in modern society. Cardiac arrhythmias can be caused by a dysregulation of calcium dynamics in cardiomyocytes. Calcium dysregulation, however, is not yet fully understood and is not easily predicted; this provides motivation for the subsequent research. Excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) is the process through which cardiomyocytes undergo contraction from an action potential. Calcium induced calcium release (CICR) is the mechanism through which electrical excitation is coupled with mechanical contraction through calcium signaling. The study of the interplay between electrical excitation, calcium signaling, and mechanical …

The Effectiveness Of General And Special Education Collaboration In Middle Schools, Kerri L. Olore Nov 2017

The Effectiveness Of General And Special Education Collaboration In Middle Schools, Kerri L. Olore

Educational Studies Dissertations

With the recent mandates involving students with disabilities, there has been ongoing debate regarding the effectiveness of inclusive programs in today’s public schools. Recent research has demonstrated that teacher collaboration is an essential component to the success of inclusive education programs (Hernandez, 2013). There is an abundance of research done on the topic of teacher collaboration, but little has examined the effectiveness of general and special education teachers working together. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to examine the degree to which general and special educators value collaboration with one another, the ways in which they collaborate, and …

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We report the detection of CO(1–0) line emission from seven Planck and Herschel selected hyper luminous (LIR(8−1000μm) > 1013 L⊙) infrared galaxies with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). CO(1–0) measurements are a vital tool to trace the bulk molecular gas mass across all redshifts. Our results place tight constraints on the total gas content of these most apparently luminous high-z star-forming galaxies (apparent IR luminosities of LIR > 1013 − 14 L⊙), while we confirm their predetermined redshifts measured using the Large Millimeter Telescope, LMT (zCO = 1.33–3.26). The CO(1–0) lines show similar profiles as compared to Jup = 2–4 transitions previously …

Suspension-Driven Gravity Surges On Horizontal Surfaces: Effect Of The Initial Shape, ‪Nadim Zgheib, T. Bonometti, S. Balachandar

We present results from highly resolved direct numerical simulations of canonical (axisymmetric and planar) and non-canonical (rectangular) configurations of horizontal suspension-driven gravity surges. We show that the dynamics along the initial minor and major axis of a rectangular release are roughly similar to that of a planar and axisymmetric current, respectively. However, contrary to expectation, we observe under certain conditions the final extent of the deposit from finite releases to surpass that from an equivalent planar current. This is attributed to a converging flow of the particle-laden mixture toward the initial minor axis, a behaviour that was previously reported for …

An Exactly Solvable Quench Protocol For Integrable Spin Models, Diptarka Das, Sumit R. Das, Damián A. Galante, Robert C. Myers, Krishnendu Sengupta

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Quantum quenches in continuum field theory across critical points are known to display different scaling behaviours in different regimes of the quench rate. We extend these results to integrable lattice models such as the transverse field Ising model on a one-dimensional chain and the Kitaev model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice using a nonlinear quench protocol which allows for exact analytical solutions of the dynamics. Our quench protocol starts with a finite mass gap at early times and crosses a critical point or a critical region, and we study the behaviour of one point functions of the quenched operator at …
