The Influence Of External Load Configuration On Trunk Musculature And Spinal Stability During Manual Material Handling, Seyed Saman Madinei Jan 2017

The Influence Of External Load Configuration On Trunk Musculature And Spinal Stability During Manual Material Handling, Seyed Saman Madinei

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The performance of manual material handling (MMH) tasks is highly associated with lower back injuries due to the excessive acute and/or cumulative mechanical loading that spinal tissues experience. Therefore, it is critical to understand how different characteristics of MMH tasks could become potential risk factors that change back injury risks and to develop proper MMH strategies that could reduce their biomechanical impacts to the spine. In this study, we explored the effects of external load configuration on trunk musculature and spinal stability during static loading and sudden loading scenarios.;The main objective of the current research was to explore how the …

Reimagining The Ssmint Software Package, Kelly Cecil Jan 2017

Reimagining The Ssmint Software Package, Kelly Cecil

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We examine two proposed indexing algorithms taking advantage of the new SSMinT libraries. The two algorithms primarily differ in their selection of documents for learning. The batch indexing method selects some random number of documents for learning. The iterative indexing method uses a single randomly selected document to discover semantic signatures, which are then used to find additional related documents. The batch indexing method discovers one to three semantic signatures per document, resulting in poor clustering performance as evaluated by human cross-validation of clusters using the Adjusted Rand Index. The iterative indexing method discovers more semantic signatures per document, resulting …

Analysis Tools For Small And Big Data Problems, Juan Chen Jan 2017

Analysis Tools For Small And Big Data Problems, Juan Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The dissertation focuses on two separate problems. Each is informed by real-world applications. The first problem involves the assessment of an ordinal measurement system in a manufacturing setting. A random-effects model is proposed that is applicable to this repeatability and reproducibility context, and a Bayesian framework is adopted to facilitate inference. This first problem is an example of an analysis tool to solve a small data problem.;The second problem involves statistical machine learning applied to big data problems. As more and more data become available, a need increases to automate the ability to identify particularly relevant features in a prediction …

A Multi-Agent Design For Smart Distribution Automation System With Distributed Energy Resources And Microgrids, Sridhar Chouhan Jan 2017

A Multi-Agent Design For Smart Distribution Automation System With Distributed Energy Resources And Microgrids, Sridhar Chouhan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The proliferation of Smart Grid technologies such as distributed energy resources (DER) and microgrids has resulted in new opportunities and challenges to existing Distribution Automation (DA) solutions. A novel hybrid Multi-Agent System (MAS) Fault Location, Isolation, and Restoration (FLIR) solution is proposed for electric distribution systems with different types of distributed generation (DG) resources and microgrids. The main goal of the MAS is to locate and isolate the fault and then to automatically reenergize fault-free portions of the network to restore power to as many customers as possible while maintaining system constraints like voltage and thermal capacity limits.;Determination of the …

Analytical And Computational Studies Of Gaseous And Dusty Combustion: From The Impacts Of Local Flame Speed Variations To A Global Predictive Mining Fire Scenario, Sinan Demir Jan 2017

Analytical And Computational Studies Of Gaseous And Dusty Combustion: From The Impacts Of Local Flame Speed Variations To A Global Predictive Mining Fire Scenario, Sinan Demir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Accidental fires and explosions in gaseous environments with dust impurities constitute a tremendous hazard for dwelling and office buildings as well as for industries dealing with explosive materials such as flammable gasses and combustible dust. Among these industries, coal mining traditionally exhibits one of the highest occupational fatality and injury rates, often due to methane/air/coal-dust catastrophes claiming many lives every year world wide. There is therefore a critical need to reduce the risk of such accidents, or at least to mitigate their disastrous consequences. For this sake, the analytical and computational studies of the present Dissertation reveal the mechanism of …

Gas-Phase Protein Structure Characterization With Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Samaneh Ghassabi Kondalaji Jan 2017

Gas-Phase Protein Structure Characterization With Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Samaneh Ghassabi Kondalaji

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over the last few decades, the widespread application of soft ionization techniques such as electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) facilitated the characterization of large biomolecules in the gas phase. Under suitable conditions and during the short timescale of the desolvation process associated with ESI (10-12-102 s), the solvent-free protein ions preserve significant portions of their native solution-phase structure and are presumed to be kinetically protected from thermodynamic destabilization such as unfolding-refolding processes occurring in the gas phase that could yield an "inside-out" structure.;The combination of ESI with ion mobility spectrometry- mass spectrometry (IMS-MS) provides information regarding higher-order …

Data Conversion Within Energy Constrained Environments, Brandon M. Kelly Jan 2017

Data Conversion Within Energy Constrained Environments, Brandon M. Kelly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Within scientific research, engineering, and consumer electronics, there is a multitude of new discrete sensor-interfaced devices. Maintaining high accuracy in signal quantization while staying within the strict power-budget of these devices is a very challenging problem. Traditional paths to solving this problem include researching more energy-efficient digital topologies as well as digital scaling.;This work offers an alternative path to lower-energy expenditure in the quantization stage --- content-dependent sampling of a signal. Instead of sampling at a constant rate, this work explores techniques which allow sampling based upon features of the signal itself through the use of application-dependent analog processing. This …

Analysis Of Model-Aided Navigation Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Stephane D'Urso Jan 2017

Analysis Of Model-Aided Navigation Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Stephane D'Urso

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To overcome the rapid and unbounded error growth of low-cost Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), aircraft localization methods commonly compensate for Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor errors by integrating them with Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements via a Kalman Filter. However, over the past decade, the potential of GPS jamming or even spoofing GPS signals has forced the research community to focus on the development of GPS-denied navigation technologies. Among the GPS-denied techniques, one approach that has been considered is the use of a Vehicle Dynamic Models (VDM) to reduce the rate at which an INS becomes unusable. As such, this …

Modeling And Design Optimization Of Multifunctional Membrane Reactors For Direct Methane Aromatization, Nicholas J. Fouty Jan 2017

Modeling And Design Optimization Of Multifunctional Membrane Reactors For Direct Methane Aromatization, Nicholas J. Fouty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Due to the recent increase of natural gas production in the U.S., utilizing natural gas for higher-value chemicals has become imperative. Direct methane aromatization (DMA) is a promising process used to convert methane to benzene, but it is limited by low conversion of methane and rapid catalyst deactivation by coking. Past work has shown that membrane separation of the hydrogen produced in the DMA reactions can dramatically increase the methane conversion by shifting the equilibrium toward the products, but it also increases coke production. Oxygen introduction into the system has been shown to inhibit this coke production while not inhibiting …

Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich Jan 2017

Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Demand for animal proteins is increasing worldwide, spurring an increase in forage based agricultural production. Forage based agriculture utilizes grass and legume crops from areas which are not suited for row-crop production to feed ruminant animals. These systems provide increased animal proteins to consumer markets, while using minimal amounts of cereal crops that would otherwise be used for human consumption. However, forage based agriculture does not come without a risk of environmental degradation. The US EPA determined that agriculture non-point source (NPS) pollution is among the top three causes of phosphorus (P) related surface water impairment and accounts for an …

Techno-Economic Studies Of Coal-Biomass To Liquids (Cbtl) Plants With Co2 Capture And Storage (Ccs), Yuan Jiang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Due to insecurity in the crude oil supply and global warming, various alternative technologies for fuel production are being investigated. In this project, indirect, direct, and hybrid liquefaction routes are investigated for production of transportation fuels from coal and biomass. Indirect coal liquefaction (ICL) and direct coal liquefaction (DCL) technologies are commercially available, but both processes are plagued with high carbon footprint. Furthermore, significant amount of hydrogen is required in the DCL process leading not only to higher cost but resulting in considerable amount of CO2 production. Addition of biomass and application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are …

Multiresolution Modeling Of Semidilute Polymer Solutions: Coarse-Graining Using Wavelet-Accelerated Monte Carlo, Animesh Agarwal, Brooks D. Rabideau, Ahmed E. Ismail Jan 2017

Multiresolution Modeling Of Semidilute Polymer Solutions: Coarse-Graining Using Wavelet-Accelerated Monte Carlo, Animesh Agarwal, Brooks D. Rabideau, Ahmed E. Ismail

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We present a hierarchical coarse-graining framework for modeling semidilute polymer solutions, based on the wavelet-accelerated Monte Carlo (WAMC) method. This framework forms a hierarchy of resolutions to model polymers at length scales that cannot be reached via atomistic or even standard coarse-grained simulations. Previously, it was applied to simulations examining the structure of individual polymer chains in solution using up to four levels of coarse-graining (Ismail et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2005, 122, 234901 and Ismail et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2005, 122, 234902), recovering the correct scaling behavior in the coarse-grained representation. In the present work, we extend this …
