Engineering The Electrochemical Capacitive Properties Of Activated Carbon By Correct Selection Of Ionic-Liquid Electrolytes, Qiu-Hong Zhang, Bao-Shou Shen, Song-Lin Zuo, Xin-Yu Wei
Journal of Electrochemistry
In order to improve the electrochemical capacitive properties and to apply coconut shell activated carbon (AC) serving as electrode materials in ionic liquid (IL)-based supercapacitor (SC), the coconut shell AC material was re-activated using a steam as an activating agent in this work, forming a secondary AC (W-AC). The results showed that the specific capacitance of the W-AC electrode was much larger than that of the raw activated carbon electrode (R-AC) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM]BF4). The electrochemical techniques including cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD) measurement, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to systematically study the capacitive …

Applications Of N-Methyl-N-Butyl-Pyrrolidinium Bromide And N-Methyl-N-Ethyl-Pyrrolidinium Bromide In Zn-Br Flow Batteries, Qi Zhang, Miao-Miao Zhang, Lin Meng
Journal of Electrochemistry
It is extremely important for battery performance and safety in Zn-Br flow battery to use quaternary ammonium salts as complex agents for bromine. In this work, the effects of electrolyte compositions and concentrations on the electrode reactions and battery performances were studied in the absence and presences of N-methyl-N-ethyl-pyrrolidinium bromide (MEP) or N-methyl-N-butyl-pyrrolidinium bromide (MBP). The conductivities in the electrolytes containing different constitutions and concentrations were measured by EIS method. The charge-discharge performance for the battery and the complex ability for bromine in different electrolytes were also investigated. The results showed that the electrolyte containing MBP was better than that …

Effect Of Fe2+/Fe3+Interconvertion On Reduction Behavior Of Fe3+ In Acidic Electrolytes, Jian-Xin Qin, Feng Lin, Wen-Ping Liu, Chao Chen, Meng-De Ren
Journal of Electrochemistry
The influences of ferrous/ferric (Fe2+/Fe3+) interconvertion on electrochemical reduction and electrode reaction of Fe3+ were investigated by using linear sweep voltammetry, potentiostatic method and cyclic voltammetry (CV) in acidic electrolytes containing chloride ion (Cl-) and sulfate ion (SO42-). It was shown that the reduction process of Fe3+/Fe2+ would take place in two independent stages: (1) the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ at E=0.35V and (2) the co-precipitation of Fe2+ by forming Fe(OH)2 (E≤-0.3 V) instead of Fe. The major effect of Fe2+ …
Effect Of Calcium On Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance Of Bridge Steel, Dong-Liang Li, Gui-Qin Fu, Miao-Yong Zhu
Effect Of Calcium On Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance Of Bridge Steel, Dong-Liang Li, Gui-Qin Fu, Miao-Yong Zhu
Journal of Electrochemistry
The corrosion behavior of bridge steel in simulated hot and humid industrial-marine atmosphere was investigated by mass loss analysis, XRD, SEM, electrochemical methods and a wet/dry alternate immersion corrosion test using 0.1 mol•L-1 NaCl+0.01 mol•L-1 NaHSO3 solutions. The corrosion depth (W) of experimental steels before and after calcium treatment versus time (t) curves showed a good agreement with the power function of W=Atn. The corrosion products were mainly composed of amorphous phase and a small amount of crystals including α-FeOOH, β-FeOOH, γ-FeOOH and Fe3O4. Trace calcium could promote the formation of …

Published as Chapter 18 in Searching for Contemporary Legal Thought, Justin Desautels-Stein & Christopher Tomlins, eds.
The locution “law and . . . (some other discipline)” implicitly asserts the primacy of legal doctrine and institutions narrowly conceived for coming to understand phenomena in which law takes a part. The ordinary story of American legal theory – formalism then realism then contemporary legal thought – can be understood to repeat the triumphalism implicit in “law and . . .” Of course, the story of American legal theory could possibly be read differently -- as a series of responses to the inability …

Spinning neutron stars asymmetric with respect to their rotation axis are potential sources of continuous gravitational waves for ground-based interferometric detectors. In the case of known pulsars a fully coherent search, based on matched filtering, which uses the position and rotational parameters obtained from electromagnetic observations, can be carried out. Matched filtering maximizes the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio, but a large sensitivity loss is expected in case of even a very small mismatch between the assumed and the true signal parameters. For this reason, narrow-band analysis methods have been developed, allowing a fully coherent search for gravitational waves from known pulsars …

Black Hole Hyperaccretion Inflow-Outflow Model. I. Long And Ultra-Long Gamma-Ray Bursts, Tong Liu, Cui-Ying Song, Bing Zhang, Wei-Min Gu, Alexander Heger
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) and ultra-LGRBs (ULGRBs) originate from collapsars, in the center of which a newborn rotating stellar-mass black hole (BH) surrounded by a massive accretion disk may form. In the scenario of the BH hyperaccretion inflow-outflow model and Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism to trigger gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the real accretion rate to power a BZ jet is far lower than the mass supply rate from the progenitor star. The characteristics of the progenitor stars can be constrained by GRB luminosity observations, and the results exceed usual expectations. LGRBs lasting from several seconds to tens of seconds in the rest …

Understanding Climate-Hydrologic-Human Interactions To Guide Groundwater Model Development For Southern High Plains, Venkatesh Uddameri, Sreeram Singaraju, Abdullah Karim, Prasanna Gowda, Ryan Bailey, Meagan Schipanski
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The Ogallala Aquifer is the only reliable source of freshwater in the Southern High Plains (SHP) and is used extensively to build a strong agricultural economy with a significant impact on global food security. Groundwater models capable of simulating human-hydrologic-climate interactions are crucial to guide future water management and policy planning endeavors in this water stressed region. A well-defined conceptual model is a necessary first-step in that direction. Conceptual modeling should not be limited to compiling necessary datasets but must also focus on generating critical insights pertaining to human-climate-aquifer interactions especially when the emphasis is on guiding future policy. Model …

The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) models were used to simulate a 10 day high-ozone episode observed during the 2013 Uinta Basin Winter Ozone Study (UBWOS). The baseline model had a large negative bias when compared to ozone (O3) and volatile organic compound (VOC) measurements across the basin. Contrary to other wintertime Uinta Basin studies, predicted nitrogen oxides (NOx) were typically low compared to measurements. Increases to oil and gas VOC emissions resulted in O3 predictions closer to observations, and nighttime O3 improved when reducing the deposition velocity …

The effect of Y addition and magnetic field on texture and magnetic properties of arc-melted alnico 9 magnets has been investigated. Small additions of Y (1.5 wt.%) develop a (200) texture for the arc-melted alnico 9 magnet. Such a texture is hard to form in cast samples. To achieve this goal, we set up a high-field annealing system with a maximum operation temperature of 12500 C. This system enabled annealing in a field of 45 kOe with subsequent draw annealing for the solutionized buttons; we have been able to substantially increase remanence ratio and coercivity, from 0.70 and 1200 …

Exploring The Use Of A Time-Frequency Domain Technique For The Filtering Of Acoustic Emission/Microseismic Data, Charles Mborah, Maochen Ge, Zhigang Wang
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The performance of acoustic emission/micro seismic (AE/MS) monitoring systems in mines is greatly impacted by background noise interference. Mine trucks/vehicles, fans, blasting and electrical spikes generate noise which negatively affect AE/MS signal quality. Using such datasets without filtering may lead to inaccurate determination of first arrivals and hence wrong source location. Also, data contaminated with noise makes manual identification and picking of the first arrivals impossible or difficult to achieve. This paper explored the use of stationary discrete wavelet transform as a filter to augment noise reduction on mine AE/MS data. The output of a test run on both noisy …

We use a three-pulse ultrafast optical spectroscopy to study the relaxation processes in a frustrated Mott insulator Na2IrO3. By being able to independently produce the out-of-equilibrium bound states (excitons) of doublons and holons with the first pulse and suppress the underlying antiferromagnetic order with the second one, we were able to elucidate the relaxation mechanism of quasiparticles in this system. By observing the difference in the exciton dynamics in the magnetically ordered and disordered phases we found that the mass of this quasiparticle is mostly determined by its interaction with the surrounding spins.

Background: Measurements of the neutron charge form factor, GnE, are challenging because the neutron has no net charge. In addition, measurements of the neutron form factors must use nuclear targets which require accurately accounting for nuclear effects. Extracting GnE with different targets and techniques provides an important test of our handling of these effects.
Purpose: The goal of the measurement was to use an inclusive asymmetry measurement technique to extract the neutron charge form factor at a four-momentum transfer of 1 (GeV/c)2. This technique has very different systematic uncertainties …
Ultrasonic Neuromodulation In Vitro At Single Neuron Resolution, Sheikh Ilham
Ultrasonic Neuromodulation In Vitro At Single Neuron Resolution, Sheikh Ilham
Master's Theses
Ultrasound as a widely used imaging means for medical diagnosis has drawn growing interests as a potential noninvasive neuromodulation strategy. Focused pulsed ultrasound effectively modulates neural encoding and transmission functions especially in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) with unclear mechanism of action, which is further confounded by contradictory experimental outcomes. Lack of convincing experimental methods has hindered our mechanistic understanding of ultrasonic PNS neuromodulation. To address that, we developed a novel in vitro set up to achieve simultaneous single-unit recordings from individual mouse sciatic nerve axon and systematically studied the effect of focused pulsed ultrasound (FPUS) on action potential transmission …

Prediction Of A Mobile Two-Dimensional Electron Gas At The Lasco3/Basno3(001) Interface, Tula R. Paudel, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal
Evgeny Tsymbal Publications
Two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG) at oxide interfaces, such as LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (001), have aroused significant interest due to their high carrier density (∼1014 cm−2) and strong lateral confinement (∼1 nm). However, these 2DEGs are normally hosted by the weakly dispersive and degenerate d bands (e.g., Ti-3d bands), which are strongly coupled to the lattice, causing mobility of such 2DEGs to be relatively low at room temperature (∼1 cm2/Vs). Here, we propose using oxide host materials with the conduction bands formed from s electrons to increase carrier mobility and soften its temperature dependence. Using …

Franchise Tax Board Of California V. Hyatt, 133 Nev. Adv. Op. 102 (Dec. 26, 2017), Rebecca L. Crooker
Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The Court determined that discretionary-function immunity does not apply to intentional tort and bad faith claims. Under comity principles, the Franchise Tax Board was entitled to the $50,000 statutory cap that would extend to Nevada businesses under NRS 41.035(1). The Court additionally recognized false light invasion of privacy as a tort cause of action distinct from other privacy torts, and adopted the Restatement’s sliding-scale approach in determining the amount of evidence necessary to establish a claim for intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Low Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation From Gravitational Waves Generated By Neutron Stars, Preston Jones, Andri Gretarsson, Douglas Singleton
Low Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation From Gravitational Waves Generated By Neutron Stars, Preston Jones, Andri Gretarsson, Douglas Singleton
Publications
We investigate the possibility of observing very low frequency (VLF) electromagnetic radiation produced from the vacuum by gravitational waves. We review the calculations leading to the possibility of vacuum conversion of gravitational waves into electromagnetic waves and show how this process evades the well-known prohibition against particle production from gravitational waves. Using Newman-Penrose scalars, we estimate the luminosity of this proposed electromagnetic counterpart radiation coming from gravitational waves produced by neutron star oscillations. The detection of electromagnetic counterpart radiation would provide an indirect way of observing gravitational radiation with future spacecraft missions, especially lunar orbiting probes.

Experiences Of Lnu Neophyte Teachers: Cues For A Viable Mentoring Program, Evelyn B. Aguirre, Solomon D. Faller Jr.
The Qualitative Report
The usefulness of teachers’ mentoring program cannot be underestimated. Some universities and colleges in the Philippines have been implementing this kind of program with different approaches, content, and scope. The extent of mentoring programs to improve teaching careers has been studied here and abroad. Results remain inconclusive. This case study with a phenomenological peg has explored the lived experiences of neophyte teachers through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. Their experiences in the first years of teaching were characterized by uncertainties, anxieties, struggles, and difficulties emanating from their lack of expertise on various aspects related to teaching practice, lack of …

Based on Goffman’s theories of self-presentation and framing, this exploratory investigation adapted Videostyle and Webstyle protocols to analyse the 2016 US presidential primary candidates’ Snapchat posts. This quantitative content analysis (N = 871) coded for the visual content, production techniques, nonverbal content and frames used by the five candidates who used Snapchat as a strategic tool to engage voters throughout the course of the 2016 US primary campaign. The results indicate Clinton (D) deviated from the other candidates in the visual and nonverbal content as well as the frames used in her snaps. The implications of these findings on …
Are English Teachers The First Math Teachers? A Comparison Of English And Mathematics Syntax, Elliott Ostler, Jill Bruckner
Are English Teachers The First Math Teachers? A Comparison Of English And Mathematics Syntax, Elliott Ostler, Jill Bruckner
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Abstract: The narrative presented hereafter will demonstrate the similarities of syntactic systems in formal written English and in generalized systems of standard computational algebra. The argument is made that algebraic systems can be taught using generalizations from written English syntax. This argument will be characterized in three parts: 1) describing the development of axiomatic systems in mathematics, 2) demonstrating the similar structure of the foundational elements used in English and mathematics, and 3) illustrating how mathematical process may be characterized by providing practical examples from written English.

Assessing Concerns And Leading Pedagogical Innovation In Higher Education: A Case Study Of The Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School Of Business, Kamla Mungal, Gour C. Saha
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Studies of pedagogical innovation indicate that the implementation process is enhanced by addressing teachers’ concerns. Institutions address teacher preparedness mainly from the perspectives of their preparation and institutional support, without recognising teachers’ mental state and particular implementation concerns. This paper adopts the Concerns Based Adoption Model (CBAM) to examine the Stages of Concern (SoC) of faculty involved in the implementation of pedagogical reform. The standardized 35-item SoC questionnaire was sent online to 152 faculty members and 31 responses were obtained. The study found the faculty body had high levels of self-concerns, low levels of impact concerns and a willingness to …

The Fossil Fuel Energy Industry Vs. The Endangered Species Act, Cody Willnerd
Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies
It was several weeks ago that the Congressional Republicans made a push to reform the landmark Endangered Species Act to make it more friendly to landowners and fossil fuel industries. They would do this by releasing species earlier on the ESA list than before and instead focus on species that are in the greatest of need of attention. The reform would also have agencies focus on the economic costs to deny listings of species, require the agency to listen towards states concerns, and limit payouts for attorney fees in ESA litigations. This would be incredibly damaging to many species that …

Building Our Way To A Better Future, Brad Shaner
Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies
The potential demolishing of the Clean Power Plan by the federal government in early October is looking like a losing fight in our war against carbon emissions at one of the biggest sources of these emissions. But we can continue to fight in this war and make an even bigger impact by focusing our efforts on the most ordinary and consistent thing in our modern lives; the buildings we live and work in. Some would say that high efficiency or green buildings are a commodity that only the wealthy individuals or businesses can achieve, but this doesn’t have to be …
