What Aspects Of Emotional Intelligence Help Former Prisoners Make Decisions To Desist Crime?, Craig A. Waleed
Education Doctoral
Making good post-incarceration decisions are important for helping formerly incarcerated individuals avoid a return to prison. This is the first study to look at emotional intelligence (EI) components formerly incarcerated men considered important for post-prison criminal desistance. This study explored six former New York state male prisoner’s individual experiences developing EI competencies, and how those EI skills contributed to their post-release decisions to desist crime. Research participants spent an average 7.5 years in a New York state prison, and have been out of prison and living in the community for an average 3.6 years without recommitting a criminal offense. Research …

Statistical And Clinical Equivalence Of Measurements, Puntipa Wanitjirattikal
Statistical And Clinical Equivalence Of Measurements, Puntipa Wanitjirattikal
Dissertations
This study proposes a test for statistical equivalence of two measurements. Typically, a new measurement process Υ is compared to an existing or standard measurement process Χ. We are assuming that Χ and Υ are measurements on the same scale. The paired t-test may be used to check for significant difference between (Χ, Υ) pairs. However, the paired t-test is intended to detect shift-type relationships of the form Υ=Χ+δ1 and may have low power for scale-type relations of the form Υ=γΧ.
We propose a test that has reasonable power to …
Bio-Socially Inspired Strategies In Support Of Dynamic Spectrum Access: An Evolutionary Game Theory Perspective, Mohammad Ali Marzoug Abu Shattal
Bio-Socially Inspired Strategies In Support Of Dynamic Spectrum Access: An Evolutionary Game Theory Perspective, Mohammad Ali Marzoug Abu Shattal
Dissertations
Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) has been introduced to fulfill the expanded need for spectrum by different wireless networks and applications. Within the realm of spectrum access, the problem of "spectrum crunch" is present since some of the spectrum bands are overcrowded and others are underutilized. DSA aims to alleviate the problem of spectrum crunch. In DSA, Primary Users (PUs) allow Secondary Users (SUs) to access the spectrum as long as they do not interfere with PU transmissions beyond a pre-agreed acceptable level. In this work, a bio-socially inspired approach is proposed for SU interactions in support of better throughput for …

An Lntegrated Approach (Remote Sensing, Hydrogeology, Geotechnical, And Geoinformatics) To Assess And Monitor Fossil Aquifers And Associated Land Deformation Over The Arabian Peninsula, Abdullah Ghurmullah Saeed Othman
Dissertations
Deformational features such as subsidence, sinkholes, fissures, settling and cracks in buildings and structures, and earthquakes are being reported from many of the world’s arid lands, in areas where fossil aquifers are being excessively exploited. Using the Lower Mega Aquifer System (LMAS) in Arabia as a test site, I applied an integrated approach (remote sensing, geodesy, GIS, geology, hydrogeology, and geotechnical) to identify nature, intensity, spatial distribution, and factors controlling the observed deformation in the central (Al-Qassim and Ha'il regions; area: 16×10⁴ km²) and the northern (Wadi As-Sirhan Basin; area: ~10.9×10⁴ km²) Arabia. A four -fold approach was adopted to …
Color-Connected Graphs And Information-Transfer Paths, Stephen Devereaux
Color-Connected Graphs And Information-Transfer Paths, Stephen Devereaux
Dissertations
The Department of Homeland Security in the United States was created in 2003 in response to weaknesses discovered in the transfer of classied information after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. While information related to national security needs to be protected, there must be procedures in place that permit access between appropriate parties. This two-fold issue can be addressed by assigning information-transfer paths between agencies which may have other agencies as intermediaries while requiring a large enough number of passwords and rewalls that is prohibitive to intruders, yet small enough to manage. Situations such as this can be represented by …

Three-Dimensional Vapor Intrusion Modeling Approach That Combines Wind And Stack Effects On Indoor, Atmospheric, And Subsurface Domains, Elham Shirazi, Kelly G. Pennell
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Vapor intrusion (IV) exposure risks are difficult to characterize due to the role of atmospheric, building and subsurface processes. This study presents a three-dimensional VI model that extends the common subsurface fate and transport equations to incorporate wind and stack effects on indoor air pressure, building air exchange rate (AER) and indoor contaminant concentration to improve VI exposure risk estimates. The model incorporates three modeling programs: (1) COMSOL Multiphysics to model subsurface fate and transport processes, (2) CFD0 to model atmospheric air flow around the building, and (3) CONTAM to model indoor air quality. The combined VI model predicts AER …

Computer Science and Software Engineering
Miscommunication is a common struggle that many students face in today’s world, despite the significant technological progress that we have made. With NoteIt, we aimed to solve this issue, by allowing students to join groups based off of the courses that they are enrolled in during the current quarter. Within the app, they can send and receive messages and events from everyone else in the group, or post private reminders to themselves. Communication can range from assignment clarification to exam preparation tips. Overall the development of the application went relatively well, despite some roadblocks along the way. We were satisfied …
The Financial Crisis As A Religious Crisis, Robert H. Nelson
The Financial Crisis As A Religious Crisis, Robert H. Nelson
Journal of International Business and Law
Among the important factors in the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 was a large ethical breakdown in the financial sector that preceded it. The sources of good ethical behavior are multiple but religion ranks high among them. In thinking about the role of religion, most people think first of Judaism, Christianity and other traditional religions. The concept of religion should be extended, however, to include "secular religions" which were among the most powerful religious influences of the twentieth century. This paper argues that many people on Wall Street once believed in an American "civil religion" that was grounded in …

In today’s information-rich global economy, City University of New York (CUNY) graduates need strong critical thinking skills. Over three quarters of the students who enroll across CUNY’s 24 campuses are drawn from schools in the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) (Strang, 2014). The NYCDOE, the largest public school system in the United States, serving over 1 million students (Strang, 2014). Unfortunately, many of the students who matriculate to CUNY’s college and universities are underprepared for college-level work. This is especially the case with students who attend high schools throughout the Bronx, one of New York City’s five boroughs. …

Are Market Shocks Predictable? Evidence From High-Frequency Scenarios., Jinwen Sun
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Exploring the possibility of market shocks forecasting is a significant topic for both academia and practice in finance. Measured by innovations generated from conventional time series models, market shocks are being assumed to follow specific distributions in the extensive literature. However, inconsistency occurs all the time in the real-world data. In this thesis, we propose and then apply a mutual information-based ARMA-GARCH-Artificial Neural Network framework to predict the direction of innovations under a high-frequency scenario. We leverage on the strength of neural networks in addressing complex pattern recognition problems. We study performances of two variable/feature selection techniques based on mutual …
A Variational Analysis Of Internal Variables Theory With Application To Failure Waves, Hamid Said
A Variational Analysis Of Internal Variables Theory With Application To Failure Waves, Hamid Said
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We present a unified Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism for a class of dissipative theories with internal variables based on consistent thermodynamic postulates. We specify two fundamental thermodynamic functions (the free energy and the entropy production rate) that completely determine the state of the system. These functions determine the equations of motion, which are of hyperbolic-parabolic type. A variational principle and Lagrangian theory with dissipation are formulated based on this two function approach. The Lagrangian theory in turn allows for the construction of a novel Hamiltonian theory with dissipation. This Hamiltonian formulation reveals an inner product structure and a refined Kahler structure on …
A New Scaling Law For K62 With Applications To Particle Clustering In Turbulent Flow, Vinay Preston Mahadeo
A New Scaling Law For K62 With Applications To Particle Clustering In Turbulent Flow, Vinay Preston Mahadeo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
There are two main results in this thesis. We develop a new scaling lawfor the turbulent dissipation rate, ϵ, providing a quantitative extension tothe K62 lognormal postulate. We illustrate this scaling law through its application to subgrid scale (SGS) modeling in the large-eddy simulation (LES) of particle-laden turbulent flows. The second major contribution of this thesis examines the entire covariance matrix of χ = lnϵ inwavenumber space and shows that it is approximately diagonal. Prior turbulence studies of Kolmogorov and Obukhov have explored models for ϵ using lognormal random processes. We extend these ideas and establish a random field theory …
Discovering New Materials Through First-Principles Evolutionary Algorithms, Jin Zhang
Discovering New Materials Through First-Principles Evolutionary Algorithms, Jin Zhang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Materials exhibit new physical and chemical properties under pressure. Discovering the new high-pressure structures, especially those which can be preserved as metastable structures at ambient pressure, are very instructive for practical applications. Compared with high-pressure experiments, theoretically investigating materials' behavior under high pressure is more efficient and less expensive. One motivation of this thesis is to discover new structures under high pressure using USPEX method and to evaluate the stabilities of high-pressure phases at ambient pressure. Another motivation is to calculate and analyze the electronic and mechanical properties of the new high-pressure structures at ambient pressure. With these motivations, we …

Making solid metallic hydrogen proved elusive, even at pressures up to nearly 400 GPa. An alternative approach is to use chemical alloying as a means to exert additional pressure on hydrogen atoms. Following the recent breakthrough in predicting and synthesizing hydrogen sulfide with record-high Tc = 203 K [Drozdov et al. | Nature (2015)] and with the motivation of discovering high-temperature superconductors, evolutionary algorithm USPEX is employed to search for all stable compounds in the group-IV hydrides. This method has been successfully used to predict new materials that were confirmed experimentally, e.g. | Zhang et al. | Science (2013), Mannix …

The Intracellular Cell Biology Of Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors, Noele Doreen Certain
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
AMPARs play an essential role in fast excitatory neurotransmission. Before native AMPARs can function at the synapse they must be processed intracellularly. These ion channels are synthesized and assembled into multimeric complexes, shuttled in a regulated fashion between intracellular compartments and are finally inserted into the membrane to carry out their function. Important binding partners known as auxiliary subunits associate with AMPARs at the synapse, but also during assembly and trafficking. The presence of auxiliary subunits in AMPAR complexes at the membrane has been demonstrated through electrophysiological studies, showing effects on the gating and pharmacology of AMPARs. The localization of …
Quantitative Imaging Of 3d Cerebral Microvascular Network Dynamics By Ultrahigh -Resolution Optical Coherence Doppler Tomography (Μodt), Jiang You
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Optical domain technologies can provide high spatiotemporal resolution for biomedical research and therefore attract tremendous interests in multiple disciplines including psychiatry, neurology, ophthalmology, oncology, urology and many more. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), after more than 20 years of development, has been becoming one of the most widely-used bio-optical modalities not only for laboratory-based research but also for clinical applications. For example, OCT becomes the standard of care for diagnosing glaucoma. Additionally, its derived velocimetry, optical coherence Doppler tomography (ODT), also demonstrates the unique capability of mapping cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFv) of vascular networks with capillary resolution (&phis;<6µm) and thus allows for the widespread utilization in numerous neurology studies. Although ODT has been widely used in biomedical research, there remain several technical limitations including the shallow penetration depth, low sensitivity for imaging slow flow in capillary and the measurement error due to Doppler angle. To address these challenges, viable solutions are proposed in this dissertation. Chapter 1 starts with a comprehensive review over basic principle of OCT and ODT. Chapter 2-4 explicitly address these OCT technical challenges, for instance, using a 1310nm super-luminescent Diode (SLD) laser source to extend optical penetration depth, utilizing optical contrast agent: intralipid to enhance ODT’s sensitivity for capillary flow detection, implementing numerical methods to extend ODT’s dynamic range and decouple Doppler angle. In addition to these technical improvements, Chapter 5-6 address two biomedical challenges in oncology and psychiatry. Specifically, Chapter 5 introduces a longitudinal optical access to rodent cerebral vasculature and a method of tumor boundary detection, which provides a powerful insight into the tumor progression. Chapter 6 reveals the close correlation between cocaine-elicited transient ischemic attack (TIA) and hypo-perfused cortex. Chapter 7 focuses on the development of multi-modality system and novel imaging scheme for the study of neurovascular coupling. Chapter 8 briefly concludes the contents presented in this dissertation and outlines the future development and potential applications of ODT. | 129 pages

Is The State Of The Air-Sea Interface A Factor In Rapid Intensification And Rapid Decline Of Tropical Cyclones?, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas, Mark A. Donelan, Brian K. Haus, Isaac Ginis
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Tropical storm intensity prediction remains a challenge in tropical meteorology. Some tropical storms undergo dramatic rapid intensification and rapid decline. Hurricane researchers have considered particular ambient environmental conditions including the ocean thermal and salinity structure and internal vortex dynamics (e.g., eyewall replacement cycle, hot towers) as factors creating favorable conditions for rapid intensification. At this point, however, it is not exactly known to what extent the state of the sea surface controls tropical cyclone dynamics. Theoretical considerations, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations suggest that the air-sea interface under tropical cyclones is subject to the Kelvin-Helmholtz type instability. Ejection of large …

Investigating The Use Of Multimodality To Promote Literacy Development In Early Years In Kenya, Naomi Muthoni Murungi
Master of Education
Literacy development in early years of children’s learning is very important because it determines success or failure in their future literacy learning. Young children need to be guided into new dimensions in communication and meaning making processes that promote their literacy development. Multimodality is believed to be one such approach that can be used by teachers to achieve this goal because, it draws its strength on the socio-cultural nature of literacy that recognizes the importance of children’s funds of knowledge-the knowledge and skills that children bring from their homes and community. In this study, I sought to find out whether …
A Computational And Experimental Investigation Of Lignin Metabolism In Arabidopsis Thaliana., Rohit Jaini
A Computational And Experimental Investigation Of Lignin Metabolism In Arabidopsis Thaliana., Rohit Jaini
Open Access Dissertations
Predominantly localized in plant secondary cell walls, lignin is a highly crosslinked, aromatic polymer that imparts structural support to plant vasculature, and renders biomass recalcitrant to pretreatment techniques impeding the economical production of biofuels. Lignin is synthesized via the phenylpropanoid pathway where the primary precursor phenylalanine (Phe) undergoes a series of functional modifications catalyzed by 11 enzyme families to produce p-coumaryl, coniferyl, and sinapyl alcohol, which undergo random polymerization into lignin. Several metabolic engineering efforts have aimed to alter lignin content and composition, and make biofuel feedstock more amenable to pretreatment techniques. Despite significant advances, several questions pertaining to carbon …

The scramjet engine offers the unique capability to enable sustained airbreathing flight at hypersonic speeds. However, in order to reach its full application potential, further technological maturation of several system level components is necessary. One such component is the fuel injection system. The flow conditions characteristic of the scramjet combustor are such that the rate-limiting step in the fuel injection/mixing/combustion process is the mixing of the fuel and air. For this reason, the fuel injection system must be designed with the goal of enhancing the rate of fuel/air mixing. One method that has shown potential to enhance fuel/air mixing in …

In this thesis we perform a comprehensive analysis of Galactic Type Ia supernova remnant G299.2-2.9. For this study we analyze our deep 628 ks Chandra observation data of G299.2-2.9. G299.2-2.9 has a complex multiple shell-like structure consisting of a bright inner shell, with enhancements ("knots") in the northeastern portion of the shell, and a fainter diffuse outer shell. Our spectral analysis of the outer shells of G299.2-2.9 shows that the bright inner and faint outer shells appear to be emission features from the swept-up ambient medium (by the supernova blast wave) whose density is relatively uniform along the distance from …

Height- and area-based quantitation approaches reduce two-dimensional data to a single value. For a calibration set, there is a single height- or area-based quantitation equation. We introduce a new quantitation method; a Width based method that consists of using the width of a peak (Wh), at any height h, (a fixed height, not a fixed fraction of the peak maximum), leading to any number of calibration curves. This particularity of width-based quantitation (WBQ) allows the quantitation of peaks over very large scales, making the quantitation of truncated peaks possible. We showed that WBQ can offer superior overall performance (lower root …
