Justice Stevens, The Writer, Sonja R. West Jan 2017

Justice Stevens, The Writer, Sonja R. West

Scholarly Works

In any discussion about United States Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, you're likely to hear him labeled in a variety of ways--as a brilliant “judge's judge,” the highly successful leader of the Court's more liberal wing, the prolific “maverick,” and a shrewd questioner from the bench. You might also hear him described simply as a polite and humble Midwesterner, bow-tie aficionado and diehard Cubs fan. Yet while Justice Stevens is and was all of these things, there is another important title he richly deserves yet often does not receive--Justice Stevens, the excellent writer.

This essay strives to close that …

Dissertations and Theses

A study of the impact Anglo race assertion had on American Modernism through the work of Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and T.S. Eliot shaping the discourse on American cultural identity. Arthur Miller and his "Tragedy and the Common Man" put an end to Modernism's Anglo stronghold and brought about the next period of American literature, ushering it into the era of American tragedy.

Biological, Cognitive And Psychosocial Variables Associated With Female Students’ Pursuit Of Stem Or Non-Stem Major In College, Anna Brenner Shuman

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States a disproportionately small number of women entering the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This results in women missing out on job opportunities with better earning potential, and influence over the products they use. The current study examined variables involved in female college students’ choice of STEM or non-STEM majors in college. The predictive variables of interest included biological factors (i.e. the relative length of finger digits 2 and 4, and maturation rate as indicated by puberty onset, menarche), cognitive abilities (i.e. mental rotation and quantitative performance scores on college entrance exams), and psychosocial …

Hungary's Refugee Crisis: Why A Uniform Approach Is Not The Solution, Yvonne Kupfermann Jan 2017

Hungary's Refugee Crisis: Why A Uniform Approach Is Not The Solution, Yvonne Kupfermann

Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy

The recent refugee crisis that swept over many European nations requires an inquiry into how to balance humanitarian concerns with the resources of the respective nations involved. Oftentimes, the approach is purely humanitarian, placing much of the focus on inclusion and resettlement. However, countries that stray from this humanitarian approach are often criticized. This Note aims to offer a new theoretical framework for analyzing a refugee crisis of this scope. It uses Hungary as a case study to demonstrate how history can play a role in how a refugee crisis is handled and to provide concrete examples of a country …

Direct Perception Of Animal Mind, Paul Morris Jan 2017

Direct Perception Of Animal Mind, Paul Morris

Animal Sentience

Kujala’s (2017) target article is ostensibly focused on how everyday folk (fail to) make sense of canine emotions. However, the theories outlined in the article apply to making sense of all aspects of the mentality of both human and non-human animals. The target article neglects the fundamental arguments surrounding the problem of other minds. I explore the relevant arguments and briefly review approaches suggesting that our everyday-life sense that both human and non-human animals are thinking, feeling, emotional beings has a secure epistemological basis.

No-Place, New Places: Death And Its Rituals In Urban Asia, Lily Kong Jan 2017

No-Place, New Places: Death And Its Rituals In Urban Asia, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In many Asian cities, particularly those that confront increasing land scarcity, the conversion from burial to cremation has been encouraged by state agencies in the last several decades. From Hong Kong to Seoul to Singapore, planning agencies have sought to reduce the use of space for the dead, in order to release land for the use of the living. More secular guiding principles regarding efficient land use in these cities had originally come up against the symbolic values invested in burial spaces, resulting in conflicts between different value systems. In more recent years, however, the shift to cremation and columbaria …

Performative Privacy, Scott Skinner-Thompson Jan 2017

Performative Privacy, Scott Skinner-Thompson

Publications

Broadly speaking, privacy doctrine suggests that the right to privacy is non-existent once one enters the public realm. Although some scholars contend that privacy ought to exist in public, “public privacy” has been defended largely with reference to other, ancillary values privacy may serve. For instance, public privacy may be necessary to make the freedom of association meaningful in practice.

This Article identifies a new dimension of public privacy, supplementing extant justifications for the right, by arguing that many efforts to maintain privacy while in “public” are properly conceptualized as forms of performative, expressive resistance against an ever-pervasive surveillance society. …

Language Development At 24 Months : Contributions From The Growth Of Infant Positive Affect And Maternal Quality Of Speech During A Wordless Book Task, Lauren Laake Devlieger

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Early language development has implications for children's cognitive, academic, and socio-emotional growth throughout childhood. Language acquisition is influenced by various individual (e.g., infant temperament) and contextual (e.g., language input from caregivers) factors. As such, the current study investigated the relationship between the growth of infant positive affect (PA) across 6 - 12 months of age, maternal language during a wordless book task at 18 months, and language at 14 and 24 months of age. The study included a total of 162 mother-infant dyads, the majority of which were Caucasian (70.8%). Transcripts of maternal language during the wordless book task were …

The personalized semantic search method makes the search system avoids the one-size-fits-all …

Evaluation Process Of Paraeducators : Perspectives From Paraeducators And Principals, Lynn Glickman Jan 2017

Evaluation Process Of Paraeducators : Perspectives From Paraeducators And Principals, Lynn Glickman

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Paraeducators support students in schools throughout the United States by fulfilling duties such as providing instructional reinforcement, assisting with clerical tasks, supervising students, and supporting the mobility and/or hygiene of students with physical disabilities. However, although data show that approximately 91% of schools in the United States employ paraeducators, very little research exists regarding the evaluation of these employees. The purpose of this study was to investigate paraeducator evaluation through the perceptions of paraeducators and principals who participated in paraeducator evaluation. The topic was considered within the conceptual framework of employee evaluation, or appraisal, a term often used in the …

Intraracialized, Anti-Queer Microaggressions Towards Queer Black Men Research Prospectus, Camisha Fagan, Anna Smedley-López Jan 2017

Intraracialized, Anti-Queer Microaggressions Towards Queer Black Men Research Prospectus, Camisha Fagan, Anna Smedley-López

McNair Poster Presentations

Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership (Sue et al., 2007). As intersectional microaggression research remains understudied (Sterzing et al., 2017), the purpose of this project is to extend the platform by documenting the experiences that Queer Black males experience from microaggressions intraracially in their communities. Through qualitative research and an intersectional framework, I plan to examine the impacts, experiences, and coping methods that Queer Black men encounter from intersectional microaggressions, and additionally code …

Neural Correlates Of Speech Segregation Based On Formant Frequencies Of Adjacent Vowels, Claude Alain, Jessica S. Arsenault, Linda Garami, Gavin M. Bidelman, Joel S. Snyder Jan 2017

Neural Correlates Of Speech Segregation Based On Formant Frequencies Of Adjacent Vowels, Claude Alain, Jessica S. Arsenault, Linda Garami, Gavin M. Bidelman, Joel S. Snyder

Psychology Faculty Research

The neural substrates by which speech sounds are perceptually segregated into distinct streams are poorly understood. Here, we recorded high-density scalp event-related potentials (ERPs) while participants were presented with a cyclic pattern of three vowel sounds (/ee/-/ae/-/ee/). Each trial consisted of an adaptation sequence, which could have either a small, intermediate, or large difference in first formant (I "f 1) as well as a test sequence, in which I "f 1 was always intermediate. For the adaptation sequence, participants tended to hear two streams ("streaming") when I "f 1 was intermediate or large compared to when it was small. For …

Singing Exile: Music In Irish Emigration Literature, Christopher Mccann Jan 2017

Singing Exile: Music In Irish Emigration Literature, Christopher Mccann

Theses

Ireland possesses a cultural heritage that is particularly literary and musical. The island is also renowned for its extensive and ongoing history of emigration, and imagery of exile and return is as intrinsic to conceptions of Irishness as the island’s artistic lineage. The impact on the creation of a modern Irish identity by exilic Irish writers and musicians is testament to this relationship.

The act of emigration can be conceived as a narrative of individual identity framed by a wider cultural discourse. It is therefore natural that the themes of exile and departure are a frequent presence in Irish art, …

Effects Of Attention And Color On Motion Perception In Rorschach Inkblot Interpretation, Renee Hunsberger, Keith Feigenson Jan 2017

Effects Of Attention And Color On Motion Perception In Rorschach Inkblot Interpretation, Renee Hunsberger, Keith Feigenson

Modern Psychological Studies

Visual perception facilitates quick reactions to ambiguous stimuli, a crucial survival characteristic in threat appraisal of unfamiliar circumstances. The current study investigated the impact of attention focusing on motion interpretation of ambiguous Rorschach Inkblot images displayed in black or red. Participants focused attention on three characteristics of 4 discrete priming images: identity, color, and motion. Each combination of prime and attentional focus was presented individually and in random order, and then participants were asked to describe a Rorschach Inkblot in open ended form. Motion interpretation was operationalized by the number of responses indicating that an ambiguous inkblot was perceived as …
