Reports

The Department of Children and Youth Affairs commissioned research through the Irish Research Council (IRC) to examine concepts of school readiness as they are understood by early years educators and managers, primary school principals, junior infant teachers and parents of children participating in the first Free Preschool Year in Ireland. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, involving interviews, an online survey and “draw and tell” sessions with children. Representative samples of FPSY settings and primary schools were selected and an online survey based on the findings of the qualitative phase was sent to 500 pre-primary settings and 500 primary schools. Nam June Paik And Avant-Garde As Pedagogy: Promoting Student Engagement And Interdisciplinary Thinking In The Undergraduate Humanities Classroom, Marci Mazzarotto Jan 2017

Nam June Paik And Avant-Garde As Pedagogy: Promoting Student Engagement And Interdisciplinary Thinking In The Undergraduate Humanities Classroom, Marci Mazzarotto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates how avant-garde methods can be employed as pedagogical methods in the undergraduate Humanities classroom to promote student engagement and interdisciplinary thinking. The study first addresses pedagogy and avant-garde art within their historical contexts as separate, but related disciplines. Subsequently the study fuses pedagogy and avant-garde art and provides examples of in-class activities and out-of-class assignments that illustrate the ways in which avant-garde methods function as practical teaching and learning methods. Further, the study presents artist Nam June Paik, whose work exemplifies the theoretical and practical underpinnings of avant-garde art as pedagogy. The dissertation champions the pedagogy of …

The Danger Of Foreignization: Ling Shuhua’S Ancient Melodies, Xiaoqing Liu Jan 2017

The Danger Of Foreignization: Ling Shuhua’S Ancient Melodies, Xiaoqing Liu

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Lawrence Venuti’s foreignization theory, with its link of translation strategy with power struggle, is one of the most influential theories in translation studies since the 1990s. At the same time, his theory has also been subject to heated debate due to its loosely defined terms, prescriptive approach, binary thinking, elitist tendency, and other issues. One issue stands out in particular: contrary to its goal of resistance against Anglo- American hegemony, foreignization can lead to its opposite—exoticism or Orientalism—under certain circumstances. In this paper, I examine the validity and application of Venuti’s foregnization theory in Ling Shuhua’s English autobiographical work Ancient …

Learners’ Perceptions Of Servant-Leadership In Classrooms, Kong Wah Chan Jan 2017

Learners’ Perceptions Of Servant-Leadership In Classrooms, Kong Wah Chan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The term servant-leadership was coined by Robert Greenleaf (1970) through his collection of essays titled The Servant as Leader. His message is that the best leader is first a servant. Beazley (2003) described servant-leadership as an art, a calling, a way of being, and a philosophy of life. Hence, it is not modern theory of leadership and management technique but rather the process of serving, and the development of the led, who are being served. Omoh (2007) considered that the results of servant-leadership include follower-empowerment as well as mutual trust and collaboration between the servant-leader and the led. More specifically, …

Extreme Secularism Vs. Religious Radicalism: The Case Of The French Burkini, Mohamed Abdelaal Jan 2017

Extreme Secularism Vs. Religious Radicalism: The Case Of The French Burkini, Mohamed Abdelaal

ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law

The French theory of Laïcité, or assertive secularism, has rapidly developed to become a significant part of the French constitutional legacy, which subsequently brought out what should have been expected: conflicts between the right to self-determination, local culture, religious freedom, and the state interest in curbing radicalism and extremism

Wrongly Affirmed Without Opinion, Dennis D. Crouch Jan 2017

Wrongly Affirmed Without Opinion, Dennis D. Crouch

Faculty Publications

In his 1909 treatise on appellate jurisdiction, the future Justice Benjamin Cardozo explained the role of appellate courts - not simply "declaring justice between man and man, but . .. settling the law." In Justice Cardozo's view, the appellate courts exist "not for the individual litigant, but for the indefinite body of litigants, whose causes are potentially involved in the specific cause at issue." Justice Cardozo's vision more than a century ago still resonates, and precedential opinions form a mainstay of appellate court activity nationwide. However, one court of appeals is quite different from the rest. The Court of Appeals …

The Influence Of Scenario-Based Assessment On Reading Comprehension, David James Boveri Jan 2017

The Influence Of Scenario-Based Assessment On Reading Comprehension, David James Boveri

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigated how various features of scenario-based assessments (SBAs) affect reading comprehension and measures of engagement (e.g., situational interest and motivation) with a sample of college students. SBAs are assessments that contain several features not traditionally found in reading assessments. These features include an overarching purpose that provides a goal for completing the assessment, social interaction with fictional characters, and a narrative storyline that motivates the overarching purpose. Another feature, kept constant in this study, is the structured sequence of tasks meant to build and then assess comprehension as the assessment progresses. Since SBAs are in their infancy, this …

Mourning Weeds: Objects Of Desire And Objects Of Death In María By Jorge Isaacs, Rhi Johnson Jan 2017

Mourning Weeds: Objects Of Desire And Objects Of Death In María By Jorge Isaacs, Rhi Johnson

Decimonónica

There is so much pleasure in the memory of a first love: the prickling blush of excitement at even thinking of that special person, the furtive glances that become searingly intense when gazes actually cross, the passed notes and faded flowers that evoke the first profession of sentiment. These ephemera of love, whether in real life or in literature, are a common mediation of the metaphysical discourse of love; the particular instantiation may vary, but the relationship between specific ideations and the universal holds true. This construction of sentiment or metaphysics through physical objects is crucial to the construction of …

Women And Huevos: Matters Of Food, Religion, And Gender In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S “Los Huevos Arrefalfados”, Kate Good Jan 2017

Women And Huevos: Matters Of Food, Religion, And Gender In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S “Los Huevos Arrefalfados”, Kate Good

Decimonónica

“Los huevos arrefalfados” (1890) forms part of a body of short stories on domestic violence published by Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921), yet it has received scant critical attention.1 As Margot Versteeg observes, the author’s short stories reflect a changing perspective on gender violence, evolving from more reserved to more outspoken in their condemnation of such treatment of women (137). The publication of “Huevos” in 1890 marks a point of inflection in this subset of Pardo Bazán’s work; it portrays neither the strictly passive victim of earlier texts, nor the more fully independent female seen in later ones. Instead, “Huevos” …

Rhetoric Of Typography: Cross-Cultural Perceptions Of Typefaces For Technical And Visual Communication, Michael Peterson Jan 2017

Rhetoric Of Typography: Cross-Cultural Perceptions Of Typefaces For Technical And Visual Communication, Michael Peterson

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Since the early 2000s, scholars have been conducting research to determine whether typefaces influence a reader's response to a document. Some areas of research have included the role of gender, age, or other demographics on typeface perception. However, the role of culture in academic discourse on the rhetoric of typography has been largely underexplored, and this is concerning given the ease with which technical documents can be delivered to cultures around the world with a couple of clicks on a computer.

I developed my research topic to explore whether Koreans perceive typefaces differently from non-Koreans and to discover what typefaces …

The Making Of A Virtual Monster: Ideological Criticism On The Isis Hate And Extremism, Md Shah Jahan

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The 9/11 incident and its subsequent terrorism specifically the rise of radical Islamist groups like ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), and al-Qaeda astounds the world. ISIS’s propaganda technique using digital media helps the terrorist group motivate and recruit a large group of people from around the world. Terrorist incidents like the Dhaka café in 2016 and France soccer game attack in 2015 provide a glimpse of ISIS ferocity and barbarism with its subsequent series of attacks. This research examines the kind of rhetorical language that ISIS leaders and followers use to support their ideologies. And, how the internet …

Preconception Health Knowledge Among Undergraduate Women, Ashley Mae Paulsen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Preconception health is a woman’s health before she becomes pregnant. It means knowing and understanding how preexisting health conditions and risk factors could affect a woman or her unborn child if she becomes pregnant (Office on Women’s Health, 2010). This study examined undergraduate students’ knowledge of recommended preconception health practices. A paper survey was distributed to general education classes in health, sociology, and family consumer science. This 33-item survey assessed demographics, barriers to practicing recommended preconception health behaviors, and knowledge of preconception health practices. Analyses included frequencies, independent t-test, and ANOVA. Respondents had a mean score of 42.85 (2.68) on …

Mexican Dance Group: Breaking Barriers One Tap At A Time (Chapter In Emerging Issues And Trends In Education), Tatiana Cevallos

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "With a growing number of Hispanic students in schools (Díaz-Rico & Weed, 2014; Oregon Department of Education, 2012), many educators wonder how to make the school community more accessible to Hispanic parents (González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005; Gorski & Pothini, 2014; Valdés, 1996; Wink, 2005). The dance group described in this chapter demonstrates a natural way in which one teacher has accomplished Hispanic parental accessibility and, in doing so, positively impacted her school community. Rosa Floyd, the director of Nellie Muir’s Dance Group, has been teaching in Spanish-English bilingual classrooms for more than nineteen years. She came from Mexico …

Teachers' Understanding Of Culturally And Linguistically Differentiated Instruction For English Language Learners, Poorandai Itwaru Jan 2017

Teachers' Understanding Of Culturally And Linguistically Differentiated Instruction For English Language Learners, Poorandai Itwaru

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A large school district in the northeastern United States struggled with teaching middle school English Language Learners (ELLs) to succeed in reading and writing. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate teachers' perceptions regarding what they could do to increase academic achievement for ELLs. The conceptual framework emerged from Weimer's learning-centered teaching, which aligns with Dewey's social constructivism. Ten purposefully sampled teachers agreed to be interviewed in the attempt to answer the research questions about instructional strategies teachers believed were best to deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate instruction for ELLs and what teachers believed could be done to …

Reinvestigating The Impact Of Conference Realignment On Rivalry In Intercollegiate Athletics, Cody T. Havard, Daniel L. Wann, Timothy D. Ryan Jan 2017

Reinvestigating The Impact Of Conference Realignment On Rivalry In Intercollegiate Athletics, Cody T. Havard, Daniel L. Wann, Timothy D. Ryan

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The current study investigated the influence of a U.S. intercollegiate team competing in a new conference for multiple seasons on fan perceptions of rival teams and likelihood of considering anonymous aggression toward rival teams. Fans of teams that changed conferences during conference realignment reserved stronger negative perceptions of the former rival on factors involving on-field competition and stronger negative perceptions of the current rival on factors involving off-field competition. Additionally, fans were more likely to consider committing anonymous acts of aggression against the former rival team than the current rival team. Implications and directions for future study are discussed.

Examining The Impact Of Art-Based Anchor Charts On Academic Achievement In Language Arts, Kimberly Ivette Fontanez

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The students at 2 middle schools in County SD, NHMS and WMS are not scoring on or above grade level on the information text portion of the English Language Arts (ELA) standardized SC Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (SCPASS) test given annually in South Carolina. The teachers developed and implemented art-based anchor charts to help close the achievement gap among the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. There has been no formal exploration of the teachers' experiences regarding the use of anchor charts. Using the elements of problem-based learning as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this project study was …

A Study Of Fourth-Grade Students' Perceptions On Homework Environment And Academic Motivation In Mathematics, Stefanie Harmon Jan 2017

A Study Of Fourth-Grade Students' Perceptions On Homework Environment And Academic Motivation In Mathematics, Stefanie Harmon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem at an elementary school is teachers' lack of knowledge and information on the perceptions and motivation of students to complete independent mathematics homework. The purpose of this study was to identify students' perceptions regarding their homework environment and academic motivation in mathematics. The study's conceptual framework, attribution theory, supported the examination of drivers of motivation for participants related to homework completion. Guiding research questions, supported by Keller's ARCS model, focused on the identification of students' perceptions of homework attention, relevance, curiosity, satisfaction, and their preferred homework environment. This qualitative research study obtained data from semistructured interviews with 44 …

Improving Parental Involvement In An Inner-City Elementary School, Veronica D. Marion Jan 2017

Improving Parental Involvement In An Inner-City Elementary School, Veronica D. Marion

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A pattern of low parental involvement exists at in an inner-city school in the northeast region of the United States, where 90% of the students are students of color and fewer than 10% of parents attend school-based activities. Low parental involvement at the local school may lead to decreased student achievement and limited access to needed resources and information. A qualitative case study design was used to explore the problem. Epstein's typology, which includes the traditional definition of parental involvement and acknowledges the parents' role in the home, provided the conceptual framework for the study. Research questions focused on perceived …

Acoustic Classification Of Focus: On The Web And In The Lab, Jonathan Howell, Mats Rooth, Michael Wagner Jan 2017

Acoustic Classification Of Focus: On The Web And In The Lab, Jonathan Howell, Mats Rooth, Michael Wagner

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present a new methodological approach which combines both naturally-occurring speech harvested on the web and speech data elicited in the laboratory. This proof-of-concept study examines the phenomenon of focus sensitivity in English, in which the interpretation of particular grammatical constructions (e.g., the comparative) is sensitive to the location of prosodic prominence. Machine learning algorithms (support vector machines and linear discriminant analysis) and human perception experiments are used to cross-validate the web-harvested and lab-elicited speech. Results con rm the theoretical predictions for location of prominence in comparative clauses and the advantages using both web-harvested and lab-elicited speech. The most robust …

Canine-Assisted Therapies Among U.S. Veterans With Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Olivia A. Kondos Jan 2017

Canine-Assisted Therapies Among U.S. Veterans With Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Olivia A. Kondos

Honors Undergraduate Theses

A sizeable number of U.S. veterans of all ages experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which can impact their quality of life; physically, mentally and socially. Consequences of PTSD are associated with physical and emotional disabilities, including ideation of self-harm and even suicide. Increasingly, animal-assisted therapies (AAT) are used to treat PTSD and other physical and behavioral conditions in veterans. Over the decades, AATs have used dogs, cats, horses, and dolphins among other animals. The purpose of this integrative review is to examine the use of AAT focusing on canine assisted therapy (CAT) among veterans diagnosed with PTSD. The methodology involved …
