Principal Perceptions As Literacy Leaders At High-Need Elementary Schools, Janet Marie Lear Jan 2017

Principal Perceptions As Literacy Leaders At High-Need Elementary Schools, Janet Marie Lear

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation study explores the perceptions of principals as literacy leaders and the enactment of these perceptions in high-need elementary schools. Literacy leadership, as perceived by principals, was analyzed based on interview data from six participants. Individual cases were studied for the unique characterizations each participant brought to the construct of literacy leadership through their own lived experience. Cross-case analysis was conducted in order to draw out themes among participants. Conclusions suggest that there are commonalities among principals' perceptions and enactments as literacy leaders in high-need elementary schools. Participants focused on: adoption of literacy programs and curricular fidelity; data use …

Health-Seeking Behaviors In Rural West Ghana, Cathryn Lynn Perreira Jan 2017

Health-Seeking Behaviors In Rural West Ghana, Cathryn Lynn Perreira

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is the result of an exploratory project that included a six-week period of fieldwork in the rural farming village of Humjibre in the Western Region of Ghana. It examines the health-seeking behaviors I witnessed in this village, and discusses the barriers and facilitators that control those behaviors. It is my intention to demonstrate that there are many factors that influence concepts of health that lead to health behaviors. To fully understand how an individual functions within a medical culture, all the social, cultural, political, historical, and economic factors must be considered. Extensive background research was conducted prior to …

In this study we will design and develop the business processes for the Islamic financial institutions' (IFIs) products by investigating and collecting information through Islamic literature, surveys and interviews of experts in Islamic jurisprudence, regulators, academic and Islamic finance …

An Exploration Of The Contextual Factors Related To An English Language Program In The Gulf Becoming A Learning Organization, Wayne Jones, Burcu Tezcan-Unal, Suzanne Littlewood Jan 2017

An Exploration Of The Contextual Factors Related To An English Language Program In The Gulf Becoming A Learning Organization, Wayne Jones, Burcu Tezcan-Unal, Suzanne Littlewood

Working papers

This single-case study was conducted by three practitioner researchers working for the foundational English language program at an English-medium higher education institution in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Since 2013, the department has been going through a process of transition from a general English language skills curriculum to an English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP) curriculum, which has demanded a revision of personal and institutional philosophies of language, learning and teaching. The researchers hypothesised that the major changes that have occurred in the department in relation to reframing mental models, creating a shared vision, strengthening team work practices and utilising …

New Filmmakers In The Uae, Alejandra Val Cubero Jan 2017

New Filmmakers In The Uae, Alejandra Val Cubero

Working papers

The aim of this research is to take a tour of the recent history of cinema in the United Arab Emirates and to focus on the new generation of directors who are changing the country's audiovisual map. This research on cinema in the UAE arises from the assumption that the cinematographic production of a country is part of its social reality, since it is developed within a certain culture. It then influences its history, its economy, its politics, its customs, and its imaginaries. For Pierre Sorlin (1977) cinema is a reality where "the visible" of a society is presented. Or …

From The Suburbs To The City: Seeking The Shalom Of An Inner City Neighborhood, Elias Soiles Jan 2017

From The Suburbs To The City: Seeking The Shalom Of An Inner City Neighborhood, Elias Soiles

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Journey Community Church, a five-year old white, suburban, college-educated, middle class church, moved into the Bell Hill neighborhood of Worcester, Massachusetts on July 1, 2015. This was a neighborhood of which Journey Church knew almost nothing and of which it seemingly had little in common. The Bell Hill neighborhood is poor, working class, culturally and ethnically diverse with whites comprising less than forty percent of the population. This project outlines the model of ministry that enabled Journey Church to begin to reach its neighborhood and contribute to its holistic flourishing. The biblical and theological review examined the role and nature …

"Virtue" In Moroni 9:9, Jason A. Kerr Jan 2017

"Virtue" In Moroni 9:9, Jason A. Kerr

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Latter-day Saint discussion of chastity often include Moroni 9:9 because of its suggestion that "chastity and virtue" constitute "that which is most dear and precious above all things:' The verse also says, however, that people can be "deprived" of chastity and virtue by the violence of rape. For the prophet Mormon, the Nephites' actions in Moriantum exceed "this great abomination of the Lamanites;' which involved "feed[ing] the women upon the flesh of their husbands, and the children upon the flesh of their fathers" (Moroni 9:8). Mormon's strong language aims to condemn the rapists, not their victims. Using the verse to …

Impact Of Reviewer Social Interaction On Online Consumer Review Fraud Detection, Kunal Goswami, Younghee Park, Chungsik Song

Faculty Publications

Background Online consumer reviews have become a baseline for new consumers to try out a business or a new product. The reviews provide a quick look into the application and experience of the business/product and market it to new customers. However, some businesses or reviewers use these reviews to spread fake information about the business/product. The fake information can be used to promote a relatively average product/business or can be used to malign their competition. This activity is known as reviewer fraud or opinion spam. The paper proposes a feature set, capturing the user social interaction behavior to identify fraud. …

The Intersections Of Africana Studies And Curriculum Theory: An Exploration, Theodorea Regina Berry Jan 2017

The Intersections Of Africana Studies And Curriculum Theory: An Exploration, Theodorea Regina Berry

Faculty Publications

There has been much critique of globalization now circulating in curriculum studies both nationally, in the United States, and internationally, helps us understand some of the lethal effects of globalization. Nevertheless, little of such critique is grounded in a strong commitment to work beyond the Western epistemological perimeter. While we, as reconceptualists in curriculum studies, acknowledge the necessity to honor the multiple sources and perspectives of knowledge, we continue to operate in spaces and with intentions embedded in globalized, traditional notions of curriculum. This problem is especially heightened for socially marginalized learners, particularly Black/African American learners.

In this article, I …

Motivation, Imagination, And The Future Self In Second Language Acquisition, Jason J. Stibi Jan 2017

Motivation, Imagination, And The Future Self In Second Language Acquisition, Jason J. Stibi

Projects

This M.A. project explores the theoretical role and classroom implications that imagination has on motivating human behavior, specifically as it relates to second language development. The focus of this project is to examine the current research regarding how imagination and visions of a future self may contribute to motivating language learners. I begin by examining the complex and dynamic nature of human motivation and how a Complex Dynamic Systems Theory approach to second language acquisition prevents over-simplifying the concept of motivation as simple cause-and-effect relationships. Then, I examine the influence possible language learning selves have on motivating individuals, specifically imagining …

27 Months Of Solitude: A Peace Corps Story, Christopher A. Gordon Jan 2017

27 Months Of Solitude: A Peace Corps Story, Christopher A. Gordon

Projects

In 2014, I was sent to Colombia’s Caribbean coast to serve as an English teacher through the Peace Corps. I spent two years teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) at both the elementary and secondary levels in Colombian public school settings, which included time in both urban and rural areas. Despite many hardships and setbacks, my experience in the Peace Corps was overwhelmingly positive. By teaching the alphabet at the elementary level, and focusing on vocabulary, test-taking strategies, and reading comprehension strategies at the secondary level, I was able to make a positive impact in public schools which had …

Transcending Language: Bridging Language Gaps In Science Education With Drawing, Jacqueline J. Gardner

Projects

This study seeks to find if drawing can help English Language Learning (ELL) students better understand and retain science content. Seventh and eighth grade students were given series of presentations about Pluto. Half of the students were asked to write only written notes while the other half was asked to both draw and write down notes during the presentations. Their pre and post test scores were compared to show the growth of the students’ content knowledge showing that the group that was required to both draw and write had on average higher scores than the group that only wrote in …

Levee Stories For An Expedited Reconnaissance Study, Kathleen C. Bromley Jan 2017

Levee Stories For An Expedited Reconnaissance Study, Kathleen C. Bromley

Projects

The coordination of earthen levees in Humboldt County, California known as the Redwood Creek Flood Control Project holds mistakes within its design and composition. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) admitted in studies conducted after the sculpture’s completion in 1968 that the levees extended too far into the creek’s estuary and this overreach has yet to be corrected. Poorly negotiated allowances of the levees into the transition zone caused the circulation of the vital water vein to compromise proper supportive nourishment for ecologic health. Economies such as fishing, farming, education and tourism surrounding the waterway have also suffered. …

Circumcision: Immigration, Religion, History, And Constitutional Identity In Germany And The U.S., David Abraham Jan 2017

Circumcision: Immigration, Religion, History, And Constitutional Identity In Germany And The U.S., David Abraham

Articles

A four-year-old Muslim boy was brought to a local Cologne emergency room by his mother, who was concerned about minor bleeding around the site of a circumcision. A District Court there found that circumcision, notwithstanding parental consent or religious motivation, constituted a criminal bodily injury and child abuse. Ultimately, on July 19, 2012 the Bundestag resolved that "Jewish and Muslim religious life be viable in Germany," and in December a bill was passed that legislatively overrode the ruling of the District Court and recognized circumcision as a non-punishable undertaking when undertaken for religious reasons by someone professionally trained. Two years …

Fisheries Without Courts: How Fishery Management Reveals Our Dynamic Separation Of Powers, Erin Ryan Jan 2017

Fisheries Without Courts: How Fishery Management Reveals Our Dynamic Separation Of Powers, Erin Ryan

Scholarly Publications

This essay adds a perspective from fisheries governance to the broader inquiry into the respective roles of judicial, legislative, and executive decision-making in modern environmental law. It comments on Robin Craig and Catherine Danley’s quantitative assessment of litigation under the federal Fishery Conservation and Management Act (FCMA), and considers three key questions raised by their research: (1) Why is the judicial role in fisheries management small in comparison to the executive role? (2) When litigation is brought, why are fishery management plans the most frequent targets of litigation? And finally, (3) why is it that even with so many fisheries …

A Study Of The Influence Of Branded Messages On Non-Branded Food Items When Presented To 10 To 14-Year-Old Children, Cassandra J. Chinn Jan 2017

A Study Of The Influence Of Branded Messages On Non-Branded Food Items When Presented To 10 To 14-Year-Old Children, Cassandra J. Chinn

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Children are more likely to create bonds with foods based on the environmental, socioeconomic and familial influences in their lives during early development stages. They gravitate to foods that are familiar to them and that are positioned with familiarity, creating an opportunity for branded food items to create more of a space in their psyche as part of their identity. Current research looks to reposition those energy-dense foods (commodity vegetables) that can often times be left unbranded, to see if immediate interest in the food items changes. Results found no significance to confirm nor deny a positive correlation in interest …

Review Of "Homer's Iliad: The Basel Commentary, Book Xix", Rachel H. Lesser

Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Faculty Publications

Marina Coray’s commentary on Iliad 19, originally published in German in 2009, is part of the ongoing Basel commentary series on Homer’s Iliad, edited by Anton Bierl and Joachim Latacz. So far thirteen volumes of the series have been published in German, and five in English translation. Coray’s commentary is a work of great erudition and will be an indispensable resource for scholars of Homer. Here I focus on the utility of this slightly revised new English edition for anglophone readers at various levels, and consider how this commentary relates to and supplements Mark W. Edwards’ outstanding commentary on …
