Structured Study Abroad Enhances Intercultural Competence, Lata A. Krishnan, Christi Masters, Horane Holgate, Cong Wang, Charles A. Calahan
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Participation in a service-learning (SL) study abroad (SA) program has been shown to enhance cultural competence (Krishnan, Richards & Simpson, 2016) as measured via the Public Affairs Scale (PAS; Levesque-Bristol & Cornelius-White, 2012). The purpose of this study was 1) to evaluate students’ development of intercultural competence using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI®), a tool specifically designed for this purpose, and 2) to evaluate whether intentionally escalating culturally focused developmental experiential learning together with existing course content would increase cultural competence more than program participation alone. Thirty female and one male student participated over three years of the SL SA …

On My Grind: Freestyle Rap Practices In Experimental Creative Writing And Composition Pedagogy, Evan Nave
Theses and Dissertations
My work is always necessarily two-headed. Double-voiced. Call-and-response at once. Paranoid self-talk as dichotomous monologue to move the crowd. Part of this has to do with the deep cuts and scratches in my mind. Recorded and remixed across DNA double helixes. Structurally split. Generationally divided. A style and family history built on breaking down.
Evidence of how ill I am.
And then there’s the matter of skin. The material concerns of cultural cross-fertilization. Itching to plant seeds where the grass is always greener. Color collaborations and appropriations. Writing white/out with black art ink. Distinctions dangerously hidden behind backbeats or shamelessly …

Does China’S Trade Defy Cultural Barriers?, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse, Huang Zhongwen
Does China’S Trade Defy Cultural Barriers?, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse, Huang Zhongwen
Economics
Using annual data for China and 88 trading partners that span the period 1995–2011, we estimate whether cross-societal cultural differences influence China’s external trade flows. Our results, obtained from the estimation of a series of multi-level mixed effect random intercepts and coefficients models, indicate that China’s aggregate exports and imports are largely unaffected by the cultural distance between China and its trading partners. Examination of disaggregate trade measures and consideration of the underlying dimensions of our composite cultural distance variable produces a largely similar result. Taken collectively, our results suggest that China’s trade is less affected by cultural distance than …

Organizational Conflict Navigation: Building A Comprehensive Conflict Management Course, Beth Polin
Organizational Conflict Navigation: Building A Comprehensive Conflict Management Course, Beth Polin
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Conflict situations are unfortunately a naturally occurring phenomenon in the workplace. Whether it is an employee not voicing concerns because of fear of retaliation, team members not trusting one another, or companies negotiating terms of an agreement, conflict situations are ubiquitous. Because no organization is immune to conflict, employees must enter the workplace equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to appropriately navigate such situations. Companies recognize this need and call for graduates to possess this unique set of soft skills (e.g. Buhl, nd), as much efficiency can be lost when employees are focused on conflict and not its …

Cross-Border M&A: Challenges And Opportunities In Global Business Environment [Guest Editors' Introduction], Rosa Caizza, Katsuhiko Shimizu, Toru Yoshikawa
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business
Under a rapidly changing and globalizing environment, mergers and acquisitions (M&As) have become one of the most important strategic initiatives. In this context, cross-border M&As provide various opportunities and benefits such as expeditious entry into new markets by gaining local knowledge, supplier networks, government relationships, and customers embedded in the target firm.
Are Trademarks Ever Fanciful?, Jake Linford
Are Trademarks Ever Fanciful?, Jake Linford
Scholarly Publications
A fanciful trademark-a made-up word like Swiffer for mops or Xerox for photocopiers-is presumed to neither describe nor suggest any qualities of the product associated with the mark. This presumption is consistent with the theory of linguistic arbitrariness: there exists no connection between a given word (tree) and the thing signified by the word (a large woody plant). Because a fanciful mark is assumed to be an empty vessel, meaningless until used as a trademark, it qualifies for protection from first use and receives broader protection against infringement than other categories of trademarks.
Research into sound symbolism challenges the theory …
Old-School Rhetoric And New-School Cognitive Science: The Enduring Power Of Logocentric Categories, Lucille A. Jewel
Old-School Rhetoric And New-School Cognitive Science: The Enduring Power Of Logocentric Categories, Lucille A. Jewel
Scholarly Works
For thousands of years, the contours of Western legal argument have remained unchanged. Since the time of the ancient Greeks, lawyers have been presenting arguments in the same basic format, with a heavy reliance on the concept of logos, the idea that arguments are most persuasive when presented in a clear deductive logical structure using clean-cut categories. Forming the basis for the terms that appear in logocentric legal arguments, categories allow humans to group facts and information together into classes. For instance, chairs, tables, and beds occupy the category of furniture and cars; trucks, and motorcycles occupy the category of …

Students participating in sustained community service at an urban Catholic and Marianist university were volunteer informants in this qualitative exploration of the meaning they make of their service experiences. A PhD student research team (nine members) interviewed fourteen undergraduate students (eleven of whom were seniors). Findings were organized as themes constructed within three domains: background, experience, and meaning. Within “background,” students who had prior work in faith-based service before college deepened their meaning of service. Within “experience,” there were social and cultural dynamics of navigating on and off campus life, including the roles students played as well as the challenge …

The Jurisdiction Canon, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
The Jurisdiction Canon, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
Vanderbilt Law Review
This Article concerns the interpretation of jurisdictional statutes. The fundamental postulate of the law of the federal courts is that the federal courts are courts of limited subject-matter jurisdiction. That principle is reinforced by a canon of statutory interpretation according to which statutes conferring federal subject-matter jurisdiction are to be construed narrowly, with ambiguities resolved against the availability of federal jurisdiction. This interpretive canon is over a century old and has been recited in thousands of federal cases, but its future has become uncertain. The Supreme Court recently stated that the canon does not apply to many of today's most …

Continuity And Change In Puebloan Ritual Practice: 3,800 Years Of Shrine Use In The North American Southwest, Phil R. Geib, Carrie Heitman, Ronald C.D. Fields
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Radiocarbon dates on artifacts from a Puebloan shrine in New Mexico reveal a persistence in ritual practice for some 3,800 years. The dates indicate that the shrine had become an important location for ceremonial observances related to warfare by almost 2000 cal. B.C., coinciding with the time when food production was first practiced in the Southwest. The shrine exhibits continuity of ritual behavior, something that Puebloans may find unsurprising, but also changes in the artifacts deposited that indicate new technology, transformations of belief, and perhaps shifting cultural boundaries. After briefly describing this shrine, we discuss some of the artifacts that …
Invisibility Through The Interface: The Social Consequences Of Spatial Search, Jordan Frith
Invisibility Through The Interface: The Social Consequences Of Spatial Search, Jordan Frith
Publications
Location-based services are mobile applications that use a device’s location to provide relevant results. Spatial search applications are a popular subset of location-based services that enable people to search through their surrounding space to find nearby locations. This article examines spatial search applications through a framework that combines critical geography research with research on the power search engines exert over information visibility. The main argument of the article is that popular spatial search applications, such as Yelp, may subtly reproduce existing forms of spatial segregation by rendering certain location invisible through the mobile mapping interface.
Managing Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback: Perceptions Of Experienced Teachers, Rachel A. Messenger
Managing Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback: Perceptions Of Experienced Teachers, Rachel A. Messenger
Theses and Dissertations
Error correction for English language learner's (ELL) writing has long been debated in the field of teaching English to learners of other languages (TESOL). Some researchers say that written corrective feedback (WCF) is beneficial, while others contest. This study takes a look at the manageability of the innovative strategy Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback (DWCF) and asks what factors influence the manageability of the strategy (including how long marking sessions take on average) and what suggestions experienced teachers of DWCF have. The strategy has shown to be highly effective in previous studies, but its manageability has recently been in question. A …

Designing L2 Reading Lab Courseware At The Intermediate Level, Concepción B. Godev
Designing L2 Reading Lab Courseware At The Intermediate Level, Concepción B. Godev
Dimensions
Despite increasing attention on literacy-based approaches to foreign language instruction (e.g. Allen & Dupuy, 2013; Barrette, Paesani, & Vinall, 2010; Byrnes, 2005; Kern, 2004; Magnan, Murphy, & Sahakyan, 2014) the communicative approach’s emphasis on oral proficiency continues to shadow reading practices. Although research findings commonly report that extensive reading (pleasure reading) promotes L2 development (Al-Homoud & Schmitt 2009; Day, 2015; Mason & Krashen, 1997), instructors have reported that they do not include these reading practices in the curriculum due to budgetary constraints on reading resources, lack of instructional time, and concern over the complex coordination of reading resources (Macalister, 2010). …
Social Justice In The Language Classroom: A Call To Action, Linwood J. Randolph Jr., Stacey Margarita Johnson
Social Justice In The Language Classroom: A Call To Action, Linwood J. Randolph Jr., Stacey Margarita Johnson
Dimensions
The goals of language education in the United States have always been informed by the social, historical, and political contexts in which the instruction takes place. In this paper, we make the case for social justice education in all language classrooms, and we explore the different threads of scholarship that inform social justice in language education. We begin with the Communities and Cultures standards, and then discuss critical pedagogy and transformative learning. Avenues and opportunities are explored for effective social justice instruction at the lesson planning and course design level, and for professional development. This paper concludes with a call …
The Effect Of A Promotora-Guided Educational Intervention And Partner Presence In Improving Condom Use Self-Efficacy Amongst Partnered Latino Adults, Shirley Ann Levenson
The Effect Of A Promotora-Guided Educational Intervention And Partner Presence In Improving Condom Use Self-Efficacy Amongst Partnered Latino Adults, Shirley Ann Levenson
Dissertations
This study examined the effect of a promotora guided educational intervention in order to improve condom use within the Latino community. Effective and culturally appropriate strategies for promoting condom use within the Hispanic/Latino community in the United States are needed urgently because of the high prevalence of infection with unwanted pregnancy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases in the Hispanic/Latino groups.
This was a quasi-experimental two-group pretest-posttest study. The treatment group received an educational intervention that was conducted in English and Spanish in a closed classroom setting. Data were compared among the women entered at the 10 …
The Georgia Seal Of Biliteracy: Exploring The Nexus Of Politics And Language Education, Tim Jansa, Kristina Brezicha
The Georgia Seal Of Biliteracy: Exploring The Nexus Of Politics And Language Education, Tim Jansa, Kristina Brezicha
Dimensions
On May 3, 2016, House Bill (HB) 879—the Georgia Seal of Biliteracy—was signed into law by Governor Nathan Deal and went into effect on July 1, 2016. Outside of the language education sphere, many educators and policymakers may not fully understand the benefits of studying other languages. Yet, this policy hinges on the utility of simultaneously demonstrating proficiency in a foreign language and an advanced command of English, thus forming the foundation of biliteracy. This article provides an overview of the political landscape in Georgia as it pertains to language education and analyzes how lawmakers translated the issues at hand …
Integrating Leadership And Foreign Language Literary Studies, Sheri Spaine Long, James Rasmussen
Integrating Leadership And Foreign Language Literary Studies, Sheri Spaine Long, James Rasmussen
Dimensions
This article reports on the integration of leadership studies into upper-level foreign language literature classes in German and Spanish in two undergraduate programs—a military university (USAFA) and a civilian university (UNC Charlotte). Taking into account ACTFL’s 21st Century Skills Map (2011) that includes the goal of leadership and responsibility, the study describes strategies and texts for leadership integration and recommendations for implementation to broaden the curriculum. Instructors from both institutions noted the usefulness of this approach to support language programs that include leadership as course/program/institutional goals as well as stimulating cross-cultural analysis from their exploratory analysis of student responses in …
Learning Styles And Metacognitive Awareness: How They Affect The L2 Listening Process Of At-Risk Students In A Modified Foreign Language Program (Mflp), William Keith Corbitt
Learning Styles And Metacognitive Awareness: How They Affect The L2 Listening Process Of At-Risk Students In A Modified Foreign Language Program (Mflp), William Keith Corbitt
Dimensions
Research on the acquisition of foreign languages by at-risk students has primarily focused on the Linguistic Coding Deficit Hypothesis (Horwitz, 2000). Recently, there has been a growing discussion regarding the effects of learning style rigidity (Castro, 2006; Castro and Peck, 2005; Corbitt, 2011; Sparks, 2006) and metacognitive awareness (Corbitt, 2013) on the acquisition of Spanish by at-risk students in Modified Foreign Language Programs (MFLPs). This pilot study seeks to expand the conversation to include a discussion on foreign language listening. MFLP and non-MFLP participants completed the Metacognitive Awareness of Listening Questionnaire (Vandergrift, Goh, Mareschal, & Tafaghodtari; 2006) and the Learning …
