Theresienstadt - The "Show Camp," A Burkean Analysis, Suzanne Homsley Homsley Sep 2017

Theresienstadt - The "Show Camp," A Burkean Analysis, Suzanne Homsley Homsley

Theses and Dissertations

For this thesis, a rhetorical analysis of Theresienstadt, the Jewish hybrid camp and ghetto, was completed by using Kenneth Burke’s pentad. Terministic screens were identified and Burke’s definition of man was examined in relation to the inmates and others involved in key events of Theresienstadt. This analysis was done to determine if Theresienstadt was a tool of propaganda the Nazis used to convince the world mass exterminations of Jews were not being done. An interdisciplinary approach was taken, by using the works of Kenneth Burke to complete a rhetorical analysis combined with the use of historical primary and secondary sources. …

The Cost Of The Text, Richard A. Primus Sep 2017

The Cost Of The Text, Richard A. Primus

Articles

Christopher Serkin and Nelson Tebbe's Is the Constitution Special?explores many facets of constitutional interpretation. I will focus here on their observation that constitutional interpretation is "less textual" than statutory interpretation. I place the expression "less textual" in quotation marks because "textual" could mean many things, such that it would often be problematic to characterize one interpretive exercise as more or less textual than another. In Serkin and Tebbe's view, as I understand it, mainstream constitutional interpretation is "less textual " than statutory decisionmaking in that it is less constrained by the words of particular enacted clauses. As a convenient …

Successful With Stem? A Qualitative Case Study Of Pre-Service Teacher Perceptions, Stacie H. Nowikowski

The Qualitative Report

This research is a qualitative case study of pre-service teachers’ experiences with a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) module during a middle level interdisciplinary course in the teaching of mathematics and science. Data were collected through document analysis of participant reflection journals (during six distinct stem tasks) and college curriculum as well as an analysis of researcher observations of the STEM activities. While the first and last tasks were reflective and designed to identify pre-existing STEM experiences and post-module knowledge, respectively, the other four STEM tasks simulated student-centered STEM activities common to the middle level classroom. The data were …

Twitter Application To Chinese Language Learning: Lessons And Suggestions, Jiawen Wang, Chunhong Teng Sep 2017

Twitter Application To Chinese Language Learning: Lessons And Suggestions, Jiawen Wang, Chunhong Teng

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

Making a connection between the requirement of 140 characters and the need of intermediate-low learners of Chinese as a second language (CSL) to produce output in a less challenging environment, this action research engaged the college CSL students in tweeting practices. Based on the descriptive statistics of the students’ tweeting behavior and the students’ responses to the survey administered at the end of the semester, this article reflects and summarizes the lessons learned. The authors propose that structural designs in the form of projects or tasks should still be considered for social networking applications such as Twitter to be used …

Eating Disorders And Constitutive Absence In Contemporary Women’S Writing, Mónica Calvo-Pascual Sep 2017

Eating Disorders And Constitutive Absence In Contemporary Women’S Writing, Mónica Calvo-Pascual

Journal of International Women's Studies

Anorexic narratives share the thesis that compulsive behaviours like eating disorders are determined by a strong existential component fuelled by women’s paradoxical position in present day capitalist western culture. After a review of social and psychological factors that play a significant role in the development of the disorders, this essay explores the representation of anorexia nervosa in three different first-person narratives. By portraying the psychological intricacies of the illness, these texts provide valuable information regarding its aetiology and cure in the line of recent bio-medical research on eating disorders that stresses the need to treat the disease as a symptom …

Uncertainty And Resistance In Jordanian Women's Perceptions Of Their Positionings In Society, Oraib Mango Sep 2017

Uncertainty And Resistance In Jordanian Women's Perceptions Of Their Positionings In Society, Oraib Mango

Journal of International Women's Studies

In many parts of the world, women continue to face issues of inequality and discrimination. While the plight of Arab women for gender equality has gained media attention, fewer studies have investigated the perceptions of Arab women themselves on this issue. In this study, through discourse and content analysis of face to face interviews, I investigated the meanings that Jordanian women made of how the society viewed and positioned them. While the participants were aware of the dominant Discourse that limited women and positioned them as inferior to men, their talk also expressed their resistance to this discourse. A post-structuralist …

"Der Sozialismus Siegt": Women’S Ordinary Lives In An East German Factory, Susanne Kranz Sep 2017

"Der Sozialismus Siegt": Women’S Ordinary Lives In An East German Factory, Susanne Kranz

Journal of International Women's Studies

Socialism Triumphs adorned the roof of the office equipment factory (BWS) in the Thuringian town of Sömmerda until 1990. The factory became a driving economic force in the GDR. The city, called “the capital of computers,” represents a unique case of urban development and governmental support, showcasing the state’s anticipated unity of economic and social policy. This article explores the everyday lives of women working in the factory (1946 and 1991) and examines the state-sanctioned women’s policies, how they were implemented and how women perceived these policies and the officially accomplished emancipation of men and women. Sömmerda had roughly 23,000 …

Urban Nowhere: Loss Of Self In Lydia Davis’ Stories And Wang Anyi’S Brothers, Xue Wei, Kate Rose Sep 2017

Urban Nowhere: Loss Of Self In Lydia Davis’ Stories And Wang Anyi’S Brothers, Xue Wei, Kate Rose

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper focuses on how contemporary literary works by women authors in China and the U.S. reverse the individualist West/collectivist China assumption. It mainly compares the works of Lydia Davis and Wang Anyi with regards to urban women’s identities. Under the inspiration of revolutionary ideologies that characterize 20th century China, female characters are striving for meaning in their lives as individuals. In U.S.-American writings, however, the individual is becoming more anonymous and interchangeable, particularly in urban spaces. This article traces possible reasons and implications for this contrast.

Improving Speech Recognition For Interviews With Both Clean And Telephone Speech, Sung Woo Choi Sep 2017

Improving Speech Recognition For Interviews With Both Clean And Telephone Speech, Sung Woo Choi

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

High quality automatic speech recognition (ASR) depends on the context of the speech. Cleanly recorded speech has better results than speech recorded over telephone lines. In telephone speech, the signal is band-pass filtered which limits frequencies available for computation. Consequently, the transmitted speech signal may be distorted by noise, causing higher word error rates (WER). The main goal of this research project is to examine approaches to improve recognition of telephone speech while maintaining or improving results for clean speech in mixed telephone-clean speech recordings, by reducing mismatches between the test data and the available models. The test data includes …

Reflections On A Language Planning Project In Context, Maire Mhic Mhathuna, Cathy Kelleher

Articles

The aim of this paper is to reflect in broad terms on issues which arose in the context of an early years language planning project in Irish-medium preschools (naíonraí) in the Irish-speaking (Gaeltacht) areas of the west of Ireland. Borradh Language Planning Project was commissioned in 2009 to provide guidance and planning templates for early years educators to develop the Irish language competency of children in their early years groups. Due to the changing language ecology of the Gaeltacht areas, many families now raise their children through both Irish and English and children enter the early years services with differing …

A Hybrid Approach To Optimize Feature Selection Process Using Ibpso- Bfpa For Review Spam Detection, Sp. Rajamohana, K. Umamaheswari

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

With the increase in the customer reviews, feedbacks, suggestions posted in the web forum, blogs led to the emergence of spam. Spam detection is important for both the customer and service providers to arrive at a proper decision while purchasing as well as marketing the product. Most of the research works has been developed only for sentiment classification for the past few decades which favors the spammers to write fake reviews. Hence it is important to detect the spam reviews but the major issues in spam review detection are the high dimensionality of feature space which contains redundant, noisy and …

Linguistic-Valued Logics Based On Hedge Algebras And Applications To Approximate Reasoning, Nguyen Thi-Minh-Tam, Tran Duc-Khanh Sep 2017

Linguistic-Valued Logics Based On Hedge Algebras And Applications To Approximate Reasoning, Nguyen Thi-Minh-Tam, Tran Duc-Khanh

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Humans reason by means of their own language and they can choose and decide alternatives by evaluating semantics of linguistic terms. The fundamental elements in human reasoning are sentences normally containing vague concepts, and these sentences have implicitly or explicitly a truth degree, which is often expressed also by linguistic terms such as more or less false, very false, false, true, very true, more or less true, approximately true, etc. In this article, we introduce a linguistic-valued predicate logic along with an inference system based on resolution. The truth domain of the logic is a refined hedge algebra, generated by …

Intimations Of A Spiritual New Age: I. The Spiritual Emergence And Personal Tragedy Of A Universalized Christian Mysticism In The Life And Work Of Simone Weil, Harry T. Hunt Sep 2017

Intimations Of A Spiritual New Age: I. The Spiritual Emergence And Personal Tragedy Of A Universalized Christian Mysticism In The Life And Work Of Simone Weil, Harry T. Hunt

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This is the first in a projected series on the envisionings during the crisis years of the 1930s of a future spiritual New Age consequent on the coming globalization of an individualist, capitalist, technologically driven world economy. In very different ways Jung, the philosophers Bergson and Heidegger, the historian Toynbee, and Wilhelm Reich, foresaw an emergent New Age consistent with a post-modern secular culture. Others such as Teilhard de Chardin, Krishnamurti, and Gurdjieff anticipated their own potential universalizing of more mystical aspects of the world religions. Simone Weil’s version of an essentialized mystical Christianity is part of the latter attempts, …

The Measurement Of Spirituality In Children: An Evaluation Of The Expressions Of Spirituality Inventory–Revised (Esi–R) With A Sample Of Peruvian School Children, Diana M. Mendez, Douglas A. Macdonald Sep 2017

The Measurement Of Spirituality In Children: An Evaluation Of The Expressions Of Spirituality Inventory–Revised (Esi–R) With A Sample Of Peruvian School Children, Diana M. Mendez, Douglas A. Macdonald

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Using a sample of 263 male Peruvian school children of ages ranging from 11 to 16 years, a Spanish translation of the Expressions of Spirituality Inventory- Revised (ESI-R; MacDonald, 2000a, 2000b) was evaluated in terms of its reliability and factorial validity. Examination of the internal consistency of the five ESI-R dimensions revealed somewhat mediocre reliability with Cronbach’s alphas ranging from .56 to .73 across all dimensions. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) also provided somewhat mixed support for the ESI-R; while all but one of the items produced significant loadings on their intended factors, fit indices indicated problems with model fit for …

Retrieving Realism: A Whiteheadian Wager, Matthew T. Segall Sep 2017

Retrieving Realism: A Whiteheadian Wager, Matthew T. Segall

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This essay argues that the organic realism of Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) provides a viable alternative to anti-realist tendencies in modern and postmodern philosophy since Descartes. The metaphysical merits of Whitehead’s philosophy of organism are unpacked in conversation with Hubert Dreyfus and Charles Taylor’s recent book Retrieving Realism (2015). Like Dreyfus and Taylor, Whitehead’s philosophical project was motivated by a desire to heal the modern epistemic wound separating soul from world in order to put human consciousness back into meaningful contact with reality. While Dreyfus and Taylor’s book succeeds in articulating the problem cogently, its still too phenomenological answer remains …

A Qualitative Study Of Learning Spaces At A Midwest Elementary School And Its Relationship To Student Attitudes About Reading, Stephanie Marie Limpert Sep 2017

A Qualitative Study Of Learning Spaces At A Midwest Elementary School And Its Relationship To Student Attitudes About Reading, Stephanie Marie Limpert

Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between flexible learning environments and student attitudes about reading. Flexible learning environments are spaces wherein learners can choose from different seating or standing options, locations within the learning space, and the size group with which to work. This allows the learner to find the environment that he or she learns best in. The researcher sought to understand if flexible learning environments and the autonomy to choose from the aforementioned criteria improved student attitudes about reading. To evaluate the relationship between flexible learning environments and student attitudes about reading, the researcher interviewed and surveyed teachers, and …

Issue 12: International Students Adaptation And Integration In The Canadian University Sector, Guanglong Pang, Margaret Walton-Roberts

International Migration Research Centre

International students are increasingly seen as potential migrants in the Canadian context. Pathway language programs are widely recognized as an effective system to enhance international students’ linguistic skills and a means towards effective cultural adaptation before entering university degree programs. University instructors commonly agree that Asian international students experience integration challenges. Given that China continues to dominate as the leading sending country of international students to Canada, this research examined Wilfrid Laurier University’s affiliated language program, which has a large Chinese student population, in order to assess the socio-cultural adaptation process. Considering the variable educational contexts that Chinese international students …

Logical Form And The Vernacular Revisited, Andrew Botterell, Robert Stainton Sep 2017

Logical Form And The Vernacular Revisited, Andrew Botterell, Robert Stainton

Philosophy Publications

We revisit a debate initiated some fifteen years ago by Ray Elugardo and Robert Stainton about the domain of arguments. Our main result is that arguments are not exclusively sets of linguistic expressions. Instead, as we put it, some non-linguistic items have ‘logical form’. The crucial examples are arguments, both deductive and inductive, made with unembedded words and phrases.

Combined Mnemonic Strategy Training And High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation For Memory Deficits In Mild Cognitive Impairment, Benjamin M. Hampstead, Krishnankutty Sathian, Marom Bikson, Anthony Y. Stringer Sep 2017

Combined Mnemonic Strategy Training And High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation For Memory Deficits In Mild Cognitive Impairment, Benjamin M. Hampstead, Krishnankutty Sathian, Marom Bikson, Anthony Y. Stringer

Publications and Research

Introduction: Memory deficits characterize Alzheimer’s dementia and the clinical precursor stage known as mild cognitive impairment. Nonpharmacologic interventions hold promise for enhancing functioning in these patients, potentially delaying functional impairment that denotes transition to dementia. Previous findings revealed that mnemonic strategy training (MST) enhances long-term retention of trained stimuli and is accompanied by increased blood oxygen level–dependent signal in the lateral frontal and parietal cortices as well as in the hippocampus. The present study was designed to enhance MST generalization, and the range of patients who benefit, via concurrent delivery of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

Methods: This protocol describes …
