The Function Of Religion In The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Stephanie Claire Mitchell
The Function Of Religion In The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Stephanie Claire Mitchell
Dissertations and Theses
The role of religion in politics has been rising to the forefront of history in the Middle East for a number of decades and more so since 9/11, raising significant questions as to whether religion functions as a catalyst for conflict or peace. This thesis focuses specifically on the role of religion in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the manner in which actors incorporate religion into their national politics. In doing so, the inquiry focuses on the proponents of religion on both the Jewish and the Palestinian sides in addressing a) territorial rights, b) interpretations in the use of deadly force …

Contentious Politics In The Arab Middle East: Jordanian Salafism And The Social Appropriation Of Tradition, Massimo Ramaioli
Contentious Politics In The Arab Middle East: Jordanian Salafism And The Social Appropriation Of Tradition, Massimo Ramaioli
Dissertations - ALL
In which ways do intellectuals affect social and political mobilization? How do they impact the trajectory of contention – the kind of mobilization and its developments - through their ideological work? Prominent intellectuals seem to play a relevant role in contentious politics, yet this role is still undertheorized. In this project, I analyze this question in the context of contemporary Arab Salafism, a particularly literal interpretation of Sunni Islam. I seek to unpack the processes by which prominent Islamist intellectuals impact and shape two Salafi currents originating and operating across Jordan during the 1990s and beyond. The first current is …
The Role Of The ʿUlamā’ In The Thoughts Of ʿAbd Al-Fattāḥ Abū Ghudda, Emad Hamdeh
The Role Of The ʿUlamā’ In The Thoughts Of ʿAbd Al-Fattāḥ Abū Ghudda, Emad Hamdeh
Publications
Despite his influence and contribution to scholarship in the modern Muslim world, the life and works of ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ Abū Ghudda are underrepresented in Western academic literature. This article is a first initiative at a broader assessment and contextualization of Abū Ghudda’s life and thoughts. I present a picture of a scholar who sought to represent traditional Islam in its most unpopular moments. In particular, I examine Abū Ghudda’s prevailing thoughts and opinions concerning “proper” scholarship and demonstrate how the role of the ʿulamā’ in the thoughts of Abu Ghudda is primarily a continuation of a scholarly tradition rather than …
Interpretations Of Jesus And The Virgin Mary In The Quran And The Bible: A Possible Contribution To Muslim-Christian Cooperation?, Jon Armajani
The Journal of Social Encounters
This essay explores Muslim and Christian understandings of Jesus and his mother Mary, which may provide a basis for possible cooperation between the two religious communities. The similarities and differences in views are discussed, with an understanding that there are differences in views not only between but also within the two religious communities. The essay concludes with a discussion of seven types of interreligious dialogue as articulated by Sallie B. King, and how they apply to Muslim-Christian dialogue related to Jesus and Mary.

When We Were Monsters: Ethnogenesis In Medieval Ireland 800-1366, Dawn Adelaide Seymour Klos
When We Were Monsters: Ethnogenesis In Medieval Ireland 800-1366, Dawn Adelaide Seymour Klos
Master's Theses
Ethnogenesis, or the process of identity construction occurred in medieval Ireland as a reaction to laws passed by the first centralized government on the island. This thesis tracks ethnogenesis through documents relating to change in language, custom, and law. This argument provides insight into how a new political identity was rendered necessary by the Anglo-Irish. Victor Turner’s model of Communitas structures the argument as each stage of liminality represents a turning point in the process of ethnogenesis.
1169 marked a watershed moment as it began the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. English nobles brought with them ideas of centralized power. In …

Influencing Factors For Ethnic Tolerance Among Mullti-Ethic Youth, Ahmad Abdul Razaq, Abdul Rahman Abdul Aziz, Awang Mohd Mahzan, Fong Peng Chew
Archival Material (2010s)
This study aims at investigating factors that are contributing to ethnic tolerance among multiethnic youths. Four factors identified in dtis study were socio-environment, socio- participation, knowledge and practices of patriotism. Ethnic tolerance in this study can be defined as ethnic relations and the unity among myriad ethnic groups who practice a variety of cultures, religion and lifestyles which are different from each other and they can live together without feeling prejudiced at each other. Ethnic tolerance is also referring to the concept of integration in the context of ethnic diversity in multi-ethnic society in Malaysia (Syamsul Amri, 2012). This survey …
Contexts Of Reception And Constructions Of Islam: Second Generation Muslim Immigrants In Post-9/11 America, Shahriyar Smith
Contexts Of Reception And Constructions Of Islam: Second Generation Muslim Immigrants In Post-9/11 America, Shahriyar Smith
Dissertations and Theses
The World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001 fundamentally transformed the context of reception for Muslim immigrants in the U.S., shifting it from neutral to negative while also brightening previously blurred boundaries between established residents and the Muslim minority. This study explores how second-generation Muslim immigrants have experienced and reacted to post-9/11 contexts of reception. It is based on an analysis of ten semi-structured in-depth interviews that were conducted throughout the Portland Metropolitan Area from January to April of 2016. It finds experiences of discrimination to be primarily affected by two factors: public institutions and gender. It also finds, …

A Fractured Family And Its Heirs: Seljuq Power And The “Sunni Revival” In The Middle East, 1000-1200 Ce, Elijah Sloat
History Summer Fellows
The Seljuq Turks were a group of nomadic warriors who converted to Sunni Islam by the end of the tenth century. Over the course of the next half century the Seljuqs conquered the majority of what we now call the Middle East. One Seljuq dynasty in particular, known to historians as the Great Seljuqs, positioned themselves as the dominant political power in the region as well as champions of Sunni Islam. Scholars refer to this period of Seljuq control as the “Sunni Revival” and debate heavily whether Seljuq political and religious practices were the cause of this “Revival,” as well …
QurʾĀn And Sunna Or The Madhhabs?: A Salafi Polemic Against Islamic Legal Tradition, Emad Hamdeh
QurʾĀn And Sunna Or The Madhhabs?: A Salafi Polemic Against Islamic Legal Tradition, Emad Hamdeh
Publications
The Albanian scholar Muḥammad Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Albānī (d. 1999) established a unique type of Salafism, a movement whose adherents follow a puritanical model of Muslim creed, exegesis, and conduct that is critical of madhhab Traditionalism. In this article I present an annotated translation of an audio lecture in which Albānī attempted to defend Salafism against its anti-madhhab image. I shed light on the religious and social climate that played a role in triggering Albānī’s disdain for Traditionalism and led him to discredit madhhab Traditionalist fiqh and replace it with his own interpretation of the jurisprudential requirements of Islamic scripture. Among …

Differentiating Averroes’ Accounts Of The Metaphysics Of Human Epistemology In His Middle And Long Commentaries On Aristotle’S De Anima, Caleb H A Brown
Differentiating Averroes’ Accounts Of The Metaphysics Of Human Epistemology In His Middle And Long Commentaries On Aristotle’S De Anima, Caleb H A Brown
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
Averroes (an Islamic Andalusian philosopher in the 12th century) discusses the metaphysics of human epistemology extensively, and his socio-religious context sheds light on this discussion. Several of his works, most prominently his three commentaries on Aristotle’s De Anima, attempt to explain how finite, particular minds interact with universal, eternal intelligibles. Current scholarship focuses on the two longer commentaries, the Middle Commentary and the Long Commentary, but there is no consensus regarding which of these presents Averroes’ final articulation of the metaphysics of human epistemology. Those who maintain that Averroes wrote the Middle Commentary last tend to minimize …

Jacob’S Ladder: Sa‘Ī, Abdulla Galadari
Jacob’S Ladder: Sa‘Ī, Abdulla Galadari
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
This paper looks at the symbolism of the traversing between the hills of Ṣafa and Marwah (sa‘ī) from the traditional Muslim stories pertaining to it, and its intertextualities with the Bible. A linguistic method is used to understand how the Qur’an uses polysemy in its language to symbolize some of its rituals. It is shown that the term “sa‘ī” in the Qur’an is used to symbolize the traversing between death and life. This symbolism is compared with Jacob’s Ladder in Genesis, as Jacob sees the angels ascending and descending from heaven in a location that he …
The End Of A Nation: Warithuddin Muhammad And Muslim Identity In The Nation Of Islam, Derek R. Galyon
The End Of A Nation: Warithuddin Muhammad And Muslim Identity In The Nation Of Islam, Derek R. Galyon
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Warithuddin Muhammad’s tenure as the leader of the Nation of Islam (NOI) saw the attempted implementation of universalist doctrine that differed significantly from the particularism practiced by the movement’s founding prophet, Elijah Muhammad. Despite an apparent desire to distance the movement from Elijah Muhammad’s teachings of the intrinsic link between Blackness and Islam, race remained important for both Warithuddin and his followers. By partially embracing universalist interpretations that purported to view each race as inherently equal from an Islamic viewpoint, Warithuddin could easily be characterized as having tried to “deracialize” the Nation of Islam. With this shift, one would expect …
Christian And Islamic Perspectives On The Ethical Dilemma Of In Vitro Fertilization (Ivf), Stephanie Sariles
Christian And Islamic Perspectives On The Ethical Dilemma Of In Vitro Fertilization (Ivf), Stephanie Sariles
Dialogue & Nexus
After defining IVF procedures and the associated biomedical ethics with each, I will compare and contrast Christian and Islamic perspectives on IVF. Christianity in general does not accept IVF, because it is an unnatural method of reproduction that can affect Christian traditions such as parenthood and marriage. Despite this view, Protestants, in particular, have opened up to IVF as a method for treating infertility. Islam fully accepts IVF provided the married couple follows Islamic law. Sunni Muslims do not accept gamete donation, but Shi’ite Muslims are more flexible with gamete donation and surrogacy.
Who Cares About Islamic Law?, Lama Abu-Odeh
Who Cares About Islamic Law?, Lama Abu-Odeh
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The legal transplant in the Arab world, perhaps even in the Islamic world writ large, hasn’t had much luck by way of close study in US legal academia. Compared to its scholarly treatment in other non-Western contexts, such as Latin America and East Asia, the absence is glaring. This was not for want of scholarly interest in law in the Arab/Islamic world. Much has been published on Arab constitutions for instance, and you’ve had a few speakers in this lecture series, opine on the topic. Nor has there been lack of scholarly interest in types of legislation that had become …
The Collaboration Between Librarians And Faculties In Preserving And Publishing The Intellectual Heritages Through The Institutional Repositories: A Case At Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta, Ulpah Andayani
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper deals with the professional partnership between librarian and faculty members in preserving dan publishing the intellectual heritages through the institutional repositories at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta. As a new model or innovation of preservation and publishing, institutional repositories are regarded as the complex project. The collaboration among stakeholders, therefore, is required to the successful development of institutional repositories within the university. By using descriptive study, this paper explores the initiative program of the institutional repositories development and the roles of the librarian in bridging the self-submission by faculties. Based on the study, it was found that …
Organized Women In Afghanistan: The Key To A Universal Understanding Of Human Rights, Stephanie Hinkle
Organized Women In Afghanistan: The Key To A Universal Understanding Of Human Rights, Stephanie Hinkle
Denison Journal of Religion
Hinkle connects the non-Western world with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, released by the United Nations in 1948. The author disproves the assumption that this declaration is only applicable in the West through the example of Afghani men and women, particularly those who have devoted themselves to the Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan (RAWA.) The crimes being committed against women in Afghanistan were frequently ignored by the wider world, particularly before the United States launched its military campaign there. Feminism, Hinkle argues, has an unfortunate history of believing itself to be a construction of the West, and applicable …

The Willfulness Of A Missing Frame: Ahmed Zaki And The Politics Of Visual Resistance, Miriam M. Gabriel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Ahmed Zaki (1949-2005) is one of Egyptian cinema’s most prominent leading actors, with work spanning three decades of critical films that informed a generation’s visual register of masculinity. However, the beginnings of his career were marked by public skepticism around his place as a leading actor due to him being “too dark” and “too poor”; as his career continued to flourish, those very markings of racing and classing Zaki because a foundation for increasingly stamping his public image with the “authenticity” of an Egyptian citizen. At a particularly neoliberal moment in the Egyptian economy, that of the early 80s, new …

Unsur Sinkretisme Dalam Uruf Dan Adat Masyarakat Bajau Di Sabah: Analisis Dari Perspektif Hukum Islam, Marinsah Syamsul Azizul
Student Works (2010-2019)
Every society has its own culture through interactions with various civilizations and religions, in synergy with various elements of syncretism. Through the efforts of local scholars that assimilate the traditional culture with Islamic sharia, multiple patterns of local wisdoms were emerged. However, through the interaction as well, two practices arise; ‘urf sahih which is accepted by Syarak, and ‘urf fasid which is polluted by the elements of forbidden bidaah, superstition and khurafat. In the Bajau community, the traditional practices have gone through the process of harmonization with Islamic teachings. Despite that, there is still a tendency towards the remnants of …
