Online Access To American Diocesan Archives: Current State And Lessons For Other Repositories, Colleen Hoelscher
Online Access To American Diocesan Archives: Current State And Lessons For Other Repositories, Colleen Hoelscher
Library Faculty Research
A 1997 circular letter from the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Patrimony of the Church said that “In the mind of the Church, archives are places of memory of the Christian community and storehouses of culture for the new evangelization.”1 This is true of the archives and libraries of all denominations; they are the repositories of a church’s history and thus a vital resource for understanding a church’s future. As such, it is essential that the official repositories of an organized religion, such as Catholic diocesan archives, be accessible to scholarly researchers, genealogists, members of the faith, and other …
A Novel Application: Using Mobile Technology To Connect Physical And Virtual Reference Collections, Hailie D. Posey
A Novel Application: Using Mobile Technology To Connect Physical And Virtual Reference Collections, Hailie D. Posey
Library Faculty and Staff papers
This chapter describes an innovative implementation of the use of iPad kiosks to blur the lines between physical and virtual library collections. Providence College’s Phillips Memorial Library + Commons began lending iPads to students, faculty, and staff in 2012. In addition to lending the devices, library staff dedicated time to learning about both task-based and subject-based mobile applications that would be of use to our community. A small group of library staff tested, discussed, and vetted a variety of apps that would be deployed on the iPads to be lent out. Efforts were made to promote the use and discovery …

TSOS Interview Gallery
Leonard was forced to join the military at the age of 17 in his home country of the Congo. A Catholic priest smuggled me out of the country and I lived in refugee camps in several different countries until 2004 when he came to the United States.
In 2005, a couple came to Leonard when he was homeless in the Provo library. They found out that he needed help and offered to let me live with them. They ended up paying my tuition for my education and I went to college for five years.
Leonard uses his experiences to teach …

Translation Of Power And Solidarity Pronouns In Qur’Anic Rhetoric, Amin Amirdabbaghian
Translation Of Power And Solidarity Pronouns In Qur’Anic Rhetoric, Amin Amirdabbaghian
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Translation of the Holy Quran can be difficult for translators in terms of accuracy and translatability. Sometimes translators fail to render the Quranic thoughts because of the lack of language features in target languages. This results in an unfavorable interpretation. One of the challenging aspects of translating Quran is reference switching as rhetorical devices, which are widespread in the book due to the aesthetic aspects of the Arabic language. Rendering rhetorical devices may lead to misinterpreting the Quran as the target languages might not have the same context as Arabic. The ongoing research discovers several rhetorical problems in the English …

It Took A Village To Prepare For The Restoration, David C. Peterson
It Took A Village To Prepare For The Restoration, David C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
“No man,” wrote the early seventeenth-century English poet John Donne, “is an island entire of itself.” Likewise, nothing in human history springs entirely from a vacuum, ex nihilo. Even the Restoration, although it was initiated by God and is orchestrated in the heavens, draws on resources created by previous generations of men and women. We are borne on a tide of scriptural texts and freedoms bequeathed to us by our ancestors, whom we should not forget.

Looking Back, Almost Five Years On, Daniel C. Peterson
Looking Back, Almost Five Years On, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
As the axiom states, hindsight is 20/20. As Volume 24 of Interpreter: A Journal of Mormon Scripture nears the press, it seems relevant to look back to a tumultuous time nearly five years ago when the Interpreter Foundation was visualized and launched. If history has any value at all (particularly recent history), it provides a context for understanding the course on which we find ourselves. For the Interpreter Foundation, that course continues to be full of surprises and promise.

The Life-Giving “Water” Of The Restoration, Daniel C. Peterson
The Life-Giving “Water” Of The Restoration, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Where there is water, there is life, not only literally, as in the Nile River in Egypt and in the cities of Mesopotamia, but also symbolically, as we read in the words of the prophet Ezekiel, who in vision saw a magnificent spring of fresh water flowing east from the temple, healing even the waters of the Dead Sea (Ezekiel 47). A psalm also testifies to the divine beneficence of water (Psalm 1) and John, in Revelation, quotes the Lord as giving to those “athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely” (21:10‒14), a “crystal clear river” that …

The Power Is In Them, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Interpreter Foundation has spent five years dedicated to publishing quality scholarship regarding the gospel, history, and scripture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The result is a body of work both to be proud of and to stand upon as we move forward. Profound appreciation is given to those who have contributed to this effort, and an invitation is extended to be part of future explorations and exhortations of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Book Of Mormon Witnesses And Their Challenge To Secularism, Daniel C. Peterson
The Book Of Mormon Witnesses And Their Challenge To Secularism, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
T here has been much comment recently on the growth in numbers of the religious “nones.” Not all of them are actually non-theists, but secularism or naturalism is undoubtedly on the rise — and Latter-day Saints have not escaped damage from the trend. Several recent books and articles have sought to help their readers live with doubt, cope with uncertainty, or find value or joy in the Mormon community even when some, most, or perhaps even all of its founding narrative has come to seem untenable. I believe, however, that naturalism should be directly challenged and that the Book of …

Golongan Gelandangan Di Malaysia: Antara Perluasan Tafsiran Asnaf Ibnu Al-Sabil Dan Al-Riqab, M.A.H. Idris, M.A. Ramli
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Excessive Speculation And Its Regulation On House Prices: A Malaysia Experience, N.F. Mohd Razif, N.S. Samsul Kamal, S. Mohamad, M.A. Hashim
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Speculation is ordinarily understood as a mean to purchase a good for a later resale, rather than for use. In other words, speculation is an act of selling a good, temporarily, with the intention of gaining profit from later re-purchase due to the price changes. Speculators play a very important role in the marketplace in term of adding liquidity and stabilizing the price fluctuation. However, speculators who partake in excessive speculation can resulted to destabilizing effect on the financial system. Excessive speculation that leads to zero-sum outcomes are prohibited in Islamic perspectives on finance and also condemned in conventional finance. …
