Social Class Tensions, Habitus And The Advertising Of Guinness, John Connolly, Paddy Dolan Jan 2017

Social Class Tensions, Habitus And The Advertising Of Guinness, John Connolly, Paddy Dolan

Articles

Drawing from an Eliasian perspective we examine how an ‘advertising subjectivity’ became more firmly embedded within the bourgeois habitus. We explain how and why advertising slowly developed and expanded within a commercial organization despite initial opposition, ambivalence and even hostility from some of its bourgeois senior management towards the practice – the very social class sometimes identified with advertising’s origins and advance. Our empirical case is based on Arthur Guinness & Sons Ltd, the Irish company which came to be renowned for the alcohol beverage which carried its name – Guinness stout. We explain how the development of advertising was …

History, Inc-Hubert Howe Bancroft's History Company And The Problem Of Selling The Past, Travis E. Ross

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

This is the intertwined economic and cultural histories of private support for the arts and humanities before and contemporaneous to the rise of the German-style research university in the United States. In many ways, this recovers the nineteenth-century precursor to the more recent crowdsourcing and crowdfunding movement. It investigates how the California bookseller Hubert Howe Bancroft’s for-profit historical enterprise used subscription publishing to raise the necessary capital and to elicit cultural support for its end-to-end production of what its contributors hoped would be the definitive history of Pacific North America, from Alaska to Panama and inland to the Rocky Mountains, …

In The Company Of Angels: Expressions Of Personal Autonomy, Authority, And Agency In Early Anglo-Saxon Monasticism, William Tanner Smoot Jan 2017

In The Company Of Angels: Expressions Of Personal Autonomy, Authority, And Agency In Early Anglo-Saxon Monasticism, William Tanner Smoot

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this thesis I examine the opportunities for individual agency and social and spiritual autonomy in the seventh-and-eighth-century Anglo-Saxon kingdoms occasioned by the introduction and development of Christian monasticism. The term “autonomy” concerns the degree to which individuals managed to determine the social order and nature, as well as spiritual character, of their ensuing lives through an adherence to monastic practice. Early Anglo-Saxon Christianity assumed a monastic character, and from the outset coenobitic communities acquired and maintained certain rights regarding their internal governance and social development from their ecclesiastic and secular superiors, which conceptually separated religious households from those of …

Archaeology And The Computing Age, Austin Valentine, Austin Valentine Jr. Jan 2017

Archaeology And The Computing Age, Austin Valentine, Austin Valentine Jr.

Integrated Studies

The utilization of computer technology applied to historical artifact investigation has opened a number of locked doors despite numerous concerns by critics. Through the use of computer technology, both scientist and historians now have the ability to perform in-depth investigations into aspects surrounding various questionable historical occurrences. However, some critics feel the application of computer technology could bring unwanted answers to some historically significant events.

In this paper I will introduce my research by initially giving a brief background into the evolution of computer technology applied to historical investigation. Through the explanation of various technological tools of the trade, I …

I remember with freshman, sometimes it’s like-- they have to come to that meeting, sometimes it’s like pulling teeth [to get them to say anything.] I have a whole bunch of questions, I ask “How are you doing? Women And The Book Of Mormon: The Creation And Negotiation Of A Latter-Day Saint Tradition, Susanna Morrill Jan 2017

Women And The Book Of Mormon: The Creation And Negotiation Of A Latter-Day Saint Tradition, Susanna Morrill

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The following article by Susanna Morrill first appeared in Historicizing "Tradition" in the Study of Religion, ed. Steven Engler and Gregory Price Grieve (Berlin: De Gruyter, 2005), 127-44. We believe that it has, unfortunately, not received the attention it deserves for the light it sheds on the ways the Book of Mormon has been received by its readers. Morrill writes from the perspective that the Book of Mormon is a product of the nineteenth-century, but we feel that all stand to learn much from her analysis. We would like to express our gratitude to Professor Morrill, as well as to …

An Exploration Of Teacher, School And District Leaders' Perspectives Regarding The Integration Of Instructional Technology In An Alternative Middle School: A Descriptive Case Study, Lauren Marie Kohl Jan 2017

An Exploration Of Teacher, School And District Leaders' Perspectives Regarding The Integration Of Instructional Technology In An Alternative Middle School: A Descriptive Case Study, Lauren Marie Kohl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The promise of using instructional technology to enhance student learning has been a dream and a goal for more than 30 years. During these past few decades, the reasoning has shifted from providing word processing, to supporting information access, to preparing students to become global citizens in our continually evolving technological world. While many educators are successful in these endeavors, there is still a disparity across the spectrum of consistent, intentional technology integration for learning. This varies not only from school district to school district, but between schools within districts, as well as from classroom to classroom. There has been …

Response Of Grasshoppers To The Agricultural Mosaics Of The Cape Floristic Region Biodiversity Hotspot In South Africa, Samuel Adu-Acheampong Jan 2017

Response Of Grasshoppers To The Agricultural Mosaics Of The Cape Floristic Region Biodiversity Hotspot In South Africa, Samuel Adu-Acheampong

All PhD Dissertations

Agricultural production is one of the main drivers of the on-going biodiversity crisis. This has resulted in research on the impact of agriculture on biodiversity being at an all-time high. This is critical given that the world must produce food for the ever-growing human population. This growing demand for food often demands increasing production areas at the expense of protected ones. Such trade-offs can potentially lead to dire consequences on biodiversity and its associated ecosystem function. In an attempt to minimise this potential negative impact, and also to conserve biodiversity and its associated ecosystem function, scientists and producers have developed …

Evangelism And The Work Of Discipline In Congolese Perspective: 'Evangelism In Congolese Context', Zalema Kuedituka Jan 2017

Evangelism And The Work Of Discipline In Congolese Perspective: 'Evangelism In Congolese Context', Zalema Kuedituka

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the ways the Congolese people received the Gospel from Protestant missionaries from England. I will also discuss how Congolese Christians nurture the Gospel through their own perspectives via teaching, discipleship, living it, and practicing its principles of power. This evangelism, in the Congolese perspective, goes hand in hand with the interpretation of the “Christus Victor Model” of atonement developed by Aulen. This model stands for a victory over the powers of darkness that detain humankind in bondage to sin, death, and the Devil. Irenaeus has pointed out that the problems of sin, …

The Study Of Afro-Cuban Religions, Ella Shipp Jan 2017

The Study Of Afro-Cuban Religions, Ella Shipp

The Student Researcher: A Phi Alpha Theta Publication

The scholarship of Afro-Cuban syncretic religions such as Santería/La Regla de Ocha and Palo Montewas powerfully affected by the disruption of the Cuban Revolution. Unlike other disciplines whose growth and maturation have progressed naturally since the development of modern scholarship in the 1900s, the study of Cuban orisha-based religion derived from the traditions of the Lucumí and Yoruba has only recently come into its own. During the 1800s and 1900s, there were some accounts of slave religion in novels, travel accounts, and some encyclopedic works by US and European authors. These accounts were mostly negative and strongly biased against slaves, …

Feline And Canine Figures In The Art Of Teotihuacan, Mexico : A Review And Reassessment Of Major Interpretations Of Predatory Animal Imagery In The City Of The Gods, Charles R. Stapleton

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The feline and canine figures of Teotihuacan's mural paintings communicate a surprisingly wide range of concepts and feature a rich array of associations. This variation was generated in part by the complex socio-political, economic and religious systems of this monumental, cosmopolitan city that permeated its central Mexican highland core and formed long-distance ties across Classic period Mesoamerica during its tenure (1-550/650 CE). Teotihuacan feline and canine imagery is best known for its military and sacrificial associations, a group of interpretations often supported by direct historical analogy to the Late-Postclassic Mexica-Aztec Jaguar and Eagle warrior sodalities. Although this line of reasoning …

Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) Publications

Today the citizenry of Edinburg lives in a bi-lingual, bi-national, and bi-cultural environment of Spanish- and English-speaking peoples. Were we to travel back eighty years to the 1930s and visit the ice houses, packing sheds, cotton gins, and streets of Edinburg it would not be unusual to hear people being greeted in a cacophony of languages- “Good Day,” “Buenos días (Spanish),” “Dzień dobry (Polish),” “Guten Tag (German),“ “God dag (Swedish),” and “Goede dag (Flemish).” Through the social process known as “chain migration” friends and family will learn of opportunities and then follow previous migrants to the new community. In this …

Selfhood, Historical Consciousness, And The State In International Relations Theory, Edinson Oquendo Jan 2017

Selfhood, Historical Consciousness, And The State In International Relations Theory, Edinson Oquendo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work seeks to examine the role of the state in international relations. While international relations treat states as institutions endowed with agency, they lack any means of explaining how the state can gain agency, autonomy, and rationality.

My dissertation seeks to reorient the theoretical assumptions of international relations in two ways. I develop a theory of the of the state that seeks to explain the mechanisms by which individuals are able to form collective social institutions and to endow them with authority and agency. I examine the relationship of the individuals to collective bodies such as states that can …

The Leadership Philosophy Of Mary Parker Follett (1868-1933), Judy I. Caldwell, Carolyn Crippen Jan 2017

The Leadership Philosophy Of Mary Parker Follett (1868-1933), Judy I. Caldwell, Carolyn Crippen

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The current study used qualitative historical analysis methodology to investigate systematically whether there was evidence of servant leadership competencies in Mary Parker Follett s work and life. Although Follett conducted her work approximately 100 years ago, many of her ideas, such as win-win, power-over versus power-with, and conflict resolution, would be considered leading edge today. In fact, Warren Bennis (2003) argued that, Just about everything written today about leadership and organizations comes from Mary Parker Follett s writings and lectures (p. 178) and Peter Drucker (2003) referred to her as the prophet of management (p. 9).

Changes In Land Cover And Terrestrial Biogeochemistry, Kathleen Hibbard, Forrest Hoffman, Deborah N. Huntzinger, Tristram West Jan 2017

Changes In Land Cover And Terrestrial Biogeochemistry, Kathleen Hibbard, Forrest Hoffman, Deborah N. Huntzinger, Tristram West

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

1. Changes in land use and land cover due to human activities produce physical changes in land surface albedo, latent and sensible heat, and atmospheric aerosol and greenhouse gas concentrations. The combined effects of these changes have recently been estimated to account for 40% ± 16% of the human-caused global radiative forcing from 1850 to present day (high confidence). As a whole, the terrestrial biosphere (soil and plants) is a net “sink” for carbon (drawing down carbon from the atmosphere), and this sink has steadily increased since 1980 (very high confidence). Because of the uncertainty in …
