Teaching For Epidemiological Literacy: Description, Prescription, And Critical Thinking, Peter J. Taylor
Teaching For Epidemiological Literacy: Description, Prescription, And Critical Thinking, Peter J. Taylor
Working Papers on Science in a Changing World
This working paper describes contrasting ideas for a sequence of topics as presented to students in a graduate course on epidemiological literacy. The premise of the pedagogical approach is that researchers develop their epidemiological thinking and practice over time through interactions with other researchers who have a variety of in-practice commitments, such as to kinds of cases and methods of analysis, and not simply to a philosophical framework for explanation. In descriptively teasing out what epidemiologists do in practice through a topic-by-topic presentation, I am prescriptively encouraging discussants to draw purposefully from across the range of topics and contrasting …
The Ecclesiological Implications Of The Priesthood Of All Believers, Alan Parker
The Ecclesiological Implications Of The Priesthood Of All Believers, Alan Parker
Faculty Works
The Protestant Reformation encouraged the "priesthood of all believers" but how does that concept impact the local church in the Seventh-day Adventist denomination? The lack of a clear ecclesiology has hampered the growth and effectiveness of Adventism. Both Exodus 19:6 and 1 Peter 2:9 provide a theological hermeneutic for how to reframe our ecclesiology in a way consistent with the Protestant principle of every believer serving as a priest. Priests are teachers, holy representatives, and mediators. The practical implications of these three aspects are examined. Luther's struggle with papal power structures are examined in the light of his radical understanding …

Contemporary Black Women Artists’ Narratives, Shannon Snelgrove, Laura Gardner Ph.D.
Contemporary Black Women Artists’ Narratives, Shannon Snelgrove, Laura Gardner Ph.D.
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
The purpose of this study is to explore contemporary Black women visual artists’ experiences in the arts. Specific experiences studied include: finding support, balancing family responsibilities, and overcoming gender and race barriers. Though there are numerous articles on Black women’s artwork (e.g., Edwards, 2015; Murray, 2014; Wickham, 2015), there are few about their lived experiences, in their own words. To address this gap, semi-structured interviews were conducted with Black women visual artists from the southeast United States. Despite its focus on a particular group, the study speaks to diverse audiences about surmounting challenges in life and work.
Two interviews have …

Distribution Of Abundant And Active Planktonic Ciliates In Coastal And Slope Waters Off New England, Sarah J. Tucker, George B. Mcmanus, Laura A. Katz, Jean-David Grattepanche
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Despite their important role of linking microbial and classic marine food webs, data on biogeographical patterns of microbial eukaryotic grazers are limited, and even fewer studies have used molecular tools to assess active (i.e., those expressing genes) community members. Marine ciliate diversity is believed to be greatest at the chlorophyll maximum, where there is an abundance of autotrophic prey, and is often assumed to decline with depth. Here, we assess the abundant (DNA) and active (RNA) marine ciliate communities throughout the water column at two stations off the New England coast (Northwest Atlantic)—a coastal station 43 km from shore (40 …
An Evaluation Of Northern Bobwhite Conservation Research: A Call For Large-Scale Studies, Lex J. Gomez, Kelly S. Reyna
An Evaluation Of Northern Bobwhite Conservation Research: A Call For Large-Scale Studies, Lex J. Gomez, Kelly S. Reyna
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations have declined throughout the species’ range since the 1960s. Habitat loss and degradation are thought to have largely contributed to this decline by reducing the amount of space and resources required to sustain viable quail populations. Previous studies have attempted to address this issue by focusing on ranch-level management of bobwhites instead of on the effectiveness of large-scale techniques. Here, we review current and historical studies that have facilitated the implementation of management techniques on multiple scales. In doing so, we will also reveal the shortcomings of such studies by highlighting their narrowed …

In publishing our sustainability report for the College of Health Sciences (COHS) at Boise State University, we are making our first attempt to transparently report on the social, economic, and environmental impacts that we have on our key stakeholders, and role model this leading corporate and organizational practice to inspire our business and academic peers to follow suit. With combined efforts and support from the College of Business and Economics (COBE), who will be publishing their third sustainability report this year, COHS was successful in developing our initial report. To fully align with our values, we put experiential learning at …
An Optimal Milk Production Model Selection And Configuration System For Dairy Cows, Fan Zhang
An Optimal Milk Production Model Selection And Configuration System For Dairy Cows, Fan Zhang
PhDs
Milk production forecasting in the dairy industry has been an independent research topic since the early 20th century. The accurate prediction of milk yield can benefit both the processor (creameries) and the producer (dairy farmer) through developing short-term production schedules, planning long-term road maps, facilitating trade and investment in the dairy industry, improving business operations, optimising the existing infrastructure of the dairy industry, and reducing operating costs. Additionally, due to the innate characteristics of the milk production process, the accurate prediction of milk yield has been a challenging issue in the dairy industry. With the abolishment of EU milk quotas …

A Wide Anticommunist Arc: Britain, Asean, And Nixon's Triangular Diplomacy, Wen-Qing Ngoei
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
President Richard Nixon’s triangular diplomacy succeeded because a “wide anticommunist arc” of U.S. allies in Southeast Asia had confined the influence of both China and the USSR to the Indochinese states. Beijing and Moscow welcomed détente with Washington in order to accommodate to de facto U.S. hegemony in the region.
As Above, So Between: Configuring Miss Lala As A Mixed Race Subject, Elizabeth Fei
As Above, So Between: Configuring Miss Lala As A Mixed Race Subject, Elizabeth Fei
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Elizabeth Fei situates Miss Lala, the subject of Degas’ “Miss Lala at the Cirque Fernando” painting to recenter Lala’s racially mixed body as a crucial site for understanding how discourses of race and gender manifested then and continue to manifest. Using images, articles, and recollections of her act, Fei recovers Lala’s subjectivity by drawing on three main aspects of Lala’s identity: her black womanhood, her circus performances, and her multiraciality. Fei contends that to configure Lala as a mixed race figure allows for all of the possible ways she might have identified to emerge as it is dexterous and adjustable …

Circling Centre, Finding Our Way Home: Circumambulation Pilgrimages Around Iona, Mount Tamalpais And Labyrinths, Cindy Pavlinac
Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions
Pilgrimage requires a journey. Humans are walkers, traversing the landscape seeking adventure and home. Walking pilgrimages along historic routes and concentrated journeys in a labyrinth all involve circling a centre. Places of natural grandeur have long attracted those undertaking journeys to sites of magic, prophecy, safety, hope and the supernatural. The landscape informs the journey and pilgrims notice things that can only be revealed by walking through that specific landscape. The boundaries between inner and outer landscape become blurred as the pilgrim enters an expanded relationship to the self. Walking engages the body while freeing the mind for deep contemplation …

Intelligibility And Normativity In The Study Of Religion, Bharat Ranganathan
Intelligibility And Normativity In The Study Of Religion, Bharat Ranganathan
Religion Faculty Publications
In his essay “The Devil in Mr. Jones,” J. Z. Smith issues a call. If religionists do not, he writes, “persist in the quest for intelligibility, there can be no human sciences, let alone, any place for the study of religion within them.” How should Smith’s call be construed? In other words, what constitutes the “quest for intelligibility”? And what (if anything) differentiates the religionist’s quest for intelligibility from that of other humanistic scholars? Taking as my starting point Smith’s call, I will mount a constructive proposal. On my proposal, religionists should conceive their task as twofold. First, religionists should …
Jewish Preaching In Response To Nazi Persecution And Mass Murder 1933–1945, Marc Saperstein
Jewish Preaching In Response To Nazi Persecution And Mass Murder 1933–1945, Marc Saperstein
Conference on Sermon Studies
This opening address is based on the Introduction to my forthcoming book, due out in January 2018, entitled “Agony in the Pulpit: Jewish Preaching in Response to Nazi Persecution and Mass Murder, 1933–1945.” It contains selected passages from sermons presented in chronological order, delivered by 135 rabbis in 15 countries, responding from the pulpit to what they knew, week by week, about the fate of their fellow Jews in Europe. My address does not deal directly with the content of the sermons, but rather with the challenges in using the sermons as historical sources. Here the conference theme of “The …
Gender And Nation-Building: Family Law As Legal Architecture, Tracy E. Higgins, Rachel P. Fink
Gender And Nation-Building: Family Law As Legal Architecture, Tracy E. Higgins, Rachel P. Fink
Maine Law Review
In considering the legal architecture of nation-building, we might most readily think of public law as our subject insofar as it governs the relationship between the individual and the state, and establishes the institutions of governance and the sources and limits of their power. The essays in this volume, in large part, track this instinct in that they concern themselves with fields such as constitutional law, criminal law, and public international law. Closer to the margin of public and private law are essays dealing with various dimensions of the modern regulatory state, including banking and commercial transactions. In each of …

Rudolf Bultmann On Myth, History, And The Resurrection, Brent Hege
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The Christian faith stands or falls with the confession that Jesus Christ is risen. While that assertion itself is perhaps uncontroversial, precisely what this confession means has been a subject of profound significance and immense controversy for centuries. Central to this discussion is the role of myth and history in the biblical witness and in the church’s theological engagement with the confession that Jesus Christ is risen. This book traces key trajectories of German Protestant discussions of myth, history, and the resurrection from its earliest critical analysis in the work of Hermann Samuel Reimarus and David Friedrich Strauss to contemporary …

A Legal History Of Adoption In Ontario, 1921-2015, By Lori Chambers, Adam Giancola
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
During the period of the Great War—when the rest of the world had its eyes turned towards Europe—the province of Ontario found itself in the midst of a domestic crisis. Only two decades earlier, the provincial government had enacted legislation giving the newly-founded Children’s Aid Society (CAS) the authority to identify and protect neglected and maltreated children. This legislation emerged out of a concern over juvenile delinquency, but its range was limited: services for children were given little financial backing, and CAS workers were only locally regulated. By the end of the Great War, then, concerns about rising rates of …

Scapegoating In The Films By Alejando Fernández Almendras, Ilka Kressner
Scapegoating In The Films By Alejando Fernández Almendras, Ilka Kressner
Views from Below: The Underdog in Contemporary Latin American and Spanish Film
Chilean filmmaker Fernández Almendras has examined the processes of victimization of the “poor man” in several of his feature films, most prominently Matar a un hombre [To Kill a Man] (2014, Winner of the World Cinema Grand Jury Price at Sundance Festival) and Aquí no ha pasado nada [Much Ado About Nothing] (2016). Both works exemplify processes of victimization through verbal performative acts: words in the form of humiliations, menaces and blackmail become the fatal weapons of scapegoating.

Where Morality And The Law Coincide: How Legal Obligations Of Bystanders May Be Informed By The Social Teachings Of Pope Francis, Amelia J. Uelmen
Seattle University Law Review
Since the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has offered to the world powerful signs of how we should aspire to treat each other as human beings, as brothers and sisters in the one human family. He has communicated his message and his teachings in myriad ways: through symbolic gestures; his presence and words at gatherings in our world’s most troubled places; brief messages, homilies and meditations; and official documents that continue the application of the principles of Catholic social teaching to contemporary social questions. What might these prophetic signs and statements mean for the dialogue between Catholic social thought …
