Feeding Globalization : Madagascar And The Provisioning Trade, 1600–1800, Jane Hooper
Feeding Globalization : Madagascar And The Provisioning Trade, 1600–1800, Jane Hooper
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Between 1600 and 1800, the promise of fresh food attracted more than seven hundred English, French, and Dutch vessels to Madagascar. Throughout this period, European ships spent months at sea in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, but until now scholars have not fully examined how crews were fed during these long voyages. Without sustenance from Madagascar, European traders would have struggled to transport silver to Asia and spices back to Europe. Colonies in Mozambique, Mauritius, and at the Cape relied upon frequent imports from Madagascar to feed settlers and slaves.
In Feeding Globalization, Jane Hooper draws on challenging and previously …

Death In The Gobi: A Case Study Of Skeletal Trauma From The Hets Mountain Cave In Mongolia, Christina Marie Ramazani
Death In The Gobi: A Case Study Of Skeletal Trauma From The Hets Mountain Cave In Mongolia, Christina Marie Ramazani
Theses and Dissertations
This study represents a contextualized analysis of the perimortem trauma and postmortem treatment of an assemblage (n=9) of naturally mummified individuals recovered from the Hets Mountain Cave in southern Mongolia. The assemblage dates AD 1434-1651, a period characterized by political instability and widespread conflict. Analysis of the trauma was completed utilizing radiological evaluation of 3D CT data. The perimortem trauma and postmortem treatment are contextualized within documentary and archaeological data on contemporary Mongolian mortuary and cultural practices to understand the social identities of these individuals. The trauma patterns are consistent with execution methods reserved for higher status Mongolians; the mortuary …
Neuronal Tissue Deposition Of Gadolinium Following Single In Vivo Intravenous Exposure Of Low Doses Of Gadodiamide In The Brains Of Healthy Dogs And Comparison Of Single- And Multi-Voxel Spectroscopy In The Normal Canine Brain At 3 Tesla, Alison Margret Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Proton MR spectroscopy is a tool that provides quantified brain bioprofiles. Two methods exist: single- and multi-voxel spectroscopy. No studies compare their clinical validity in vivo. Gadolinium based MR contrast agents are used to improve lesional conspicuity. Adverse events are reported. Brain deposition occurs following administration in people and murine models. In dogs, doses are anecdotal and deposition is not described. Eight normal dogs underwent MRI at 3 Tesla with two methods of spectroscopy and were administered varying doses of gadodiamide. No differences were seen between single- and multi-voxel spectroscopy when interrogating identical regions of interest. Brains were harvested and …

Integrating Non-Euclidean Geometry Into High School, John Buda
Integrating Non-Euclidean Geometry Into High School, John Buda
Honors Thesis
The purpose of this project is to provide the framework for integrating the study of non-Euclidean geometry into a high school math class in such a way that both aligns with the Common Core State Standards and makes use of research-based practices to enhance the learning of traditional geometry. Traditionally, Euclidean geometry has been the only strand of geometry taught in high schools, even though mathematicians have developed several other strands. The non-Euclidean geometry that I focus on in this project is what is known as taxicab geometry. With the Common Core Standards for Math Practice pushing students to “model …

Coolidge Against The World: Peace, Prosperity, And Foreign Policy In The 1920s, Joel Webster
Coolidge Against The World: Peace, Prosperity, And Foreign Policy In The 1920s, Joel Webster
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The common narrative of the 1920s is either to largely ignore the nation during this time and the men who presided over it or to simply dismiss the decade as a time of isolationism and Republican failure and the three presidents as corrupt, lazy, silent, or incompetent. The problems of the more typical narratives are most starkly shown in the realm of foreign policy. A more thorough examination of the role of President Calvin Coolidge and the American nation in that area reveals something very different. Because, if we approach those years as a “historical way station on the road …
God’S Silent Witnesses: Protestant Chaplains In The Canadian Military, 1939-1945, John M. Macinnis
God’S Silent Witnesses: Protestant Chaplains In The Canadian Military, 1939-1945, John M. Macinnis
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
This thesis documents the establishment and growth of the Canadian Protestant Chaplain Services during the Second World War. Bishop George Wells, the head of the Protestant Chaplaincy Service, defined the chaplains’ role as “providing for the men’s spiritual and moral welfare.” Despite having such an important role in maintaining the faith of their men, chaplains of the Second World War have been largely ignored within Canadian historiography. One goal of this thesis is to bring to light the story of these men who had to juggle not only their own faith, but the faith of their men in extraordinary circumstances. …
Inventing Saladin: The Role Of The Saladin Legend In European Culture And Identity, Brian C. David
Inventing Saladin: The Role Of The Saladin Legend In European Culture And Identity, Brian C. David
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
This thesis seeks to uncover and understand the strange historical journey of the Muslim Sultan Yusuf ibn Ayyub, known to the West as Saladin. The historic Saladin was a ruler famous for his successful campaigns against the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, his victory at the Battle of Hattin, and his holding action against the Third Crusade. Upon Saladin’s death in 1193, he became the subject of numerous legends, most of which describe him as a merciful, chivalric, and ideal leader of men. The epitome of what a thirteenth century European noble was supposed to be. This thesis seek to explain …

Racial Stereotypes: History And Consequences, Paul Olsen
Racial Stereotypes: History And Consequences, Paul Olsen
Celebration of Learning
Several years ago I asked an Augustana student whom I knew very well to describe his college experience. He was an excellent student, a respected athlete elected captain of the track team, a 3-time All-American and conference champion in track, and he was also a starter on the winning basketball team. He is also African American. His answer: “it was often uncomfortable.” This from a student who experienced LOTS of success!
My words today are partially motivated by his response. They are also driven by the increased racial unrest that has characterized our country the last few years and by …
Between The Rural And Suburban: The Social, Political, And Economic Dynamics Of Policing Forsyth County, Ga, Alexandra Vuich
Between The Rural And Suburban: The Social, Political, And Economic Dynamics Of Policing Forsyth County, Ga, Alexandra Vuich
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
This thesis reveals how perceptions of crime produce real outcomes in how Forsyth County is policed by the local sheriff’s office and how the residents come to police themselves and each other. Using historical analysis and ethnographic methods, this thesis explores the county’s racial history and shifts in political economy that shape perceptions of crime and their subsequent influence on policing amid decreasing crime rates. It is argued that the forceful removal of all African American residents in 1912, the economic shift away from an agriculture and poultry-based industry, the construction of Lake Lanier and Buford Dam, the staggered expansion …

Reading Democracy And Education In The Context Of World War I, Thomas Fallace
Reading Democracy And Education In The Context Of World War I, Thomas Fallace
Democracy & Education
In this historical study, the author offers a reading of Dewey’s Democracy and Education in the context of the two other books Dewey published the year before, German Philosophy and Politics and his coauthored Schools of To-morrow. Having published three books in two years, Democracy and Education arrived at the end of one of Dewey’s most prolific periods. Through these three texts, Dewey offered a pointed critique of authoritarian German politics, philosophy, and schooling and crafted an innovative pedagogy grounded in progressive democratic ideals as contrast. Using Germany as a clear and present foil, Dewey clarified his ideas on American …

The Black Chimera: West Germany And The Scramble For Arab Oil, 1957-1974, Nicholas Robert Ostrum
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Gelsenberg Chairman Walter Cipa proclaimed in 1969 that the company’s recent successes in Libya had been pivotal. “Even as a latecomer,†he averred, “we have a real chance to take part in the international oil trade.†Indeed, there was reason for such optimism. Gelsenberg’s fields in Libya were the most productive sources any German company had claimed outside of Europe. Although speaking primarily of his own company’s growing production, this statement also reveals much about the fortunes of the German petroleum sector from the 1950s through 1974. The Federal Republic had been slow to fully engage in the upstream (exploration …
Spill Your (Trade) Secrets: Knowledge Networks As Innovation Drivers, Laura G. Pedraza-Fariña
Spill Your (Trade) Secrets: Knowledge Networks As Innovation Drivers, Laura G. Pedraza-Fariña
Notre Dame Law Review
Theories of intellectual property take the individual inventor or the firm as the unit of innovation. But studies in economic sociology show that in complex fields where knowledge is rapidly advancing and widely dispersed among different firms, the locus of innovation is neither an individual nor a single firm. Rather, innovative ideas originate in the informal networks of learning and collaboration that cut across firms.
Understanding innovation in this subset of industries as emerging out of networks of informal information-sharing across firms challenges traditional utilitarian theories of trade secret law—which assume trade secret protection is needed to prevent excessive private, …

The Living Chain: An Applied Exploration Of Mythological Narrative And Traditional Printmaking Techniques, Jordan M. Gillenwater
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Living Chain is a body of work built to apply and analyze mythological narrative and traditional printmaking techniques. The work is a collection of prints telling an original narrative that derives much of its visual and thematic style from the works of the Baroque and Medieval periods, as well as significant influence from the prints of Gustave Doré. The purpose of this paper is to explore the ideas, mythologies, histories, and symbols found in and inspiring the work, in order to better understand the work’s purpose and its technical challenges. Additional focus is given to the historical significance and …
