Background: The recent emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) in Brazil and its precipitous expansion throughout the Americas has highlighted the urgent need for a rapid and reliable on-site diagnostic assay suitable for viral detection. Such point-of-need (PON), low-cost diagnostics are essential for ZIKV control in vulnerable areas with limited resources.

Methods: We developed and evaluated a ZIKV-specific field-deployable RT-iiPCR reagent set targeting the E gene for rapid detection of ZIKV in ZIKV-spiked human and mosquito specimens, and compared its performance to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) RT-qPCR assays targeting the E …

The Relationship Between Restricted, Repetitive Behavior And Anxiety In Adults With Intellectual Disability, Casey M. Mazzola Dec 2017

The Relationship Between Restricted, Repetitive Behavior And Anxiety In Adults With Intellectual Disability, Casey M. Mazzola

Theses

This study investigated the relationship between restricted, repetitive behavior (RRB) and anxiety in a sample of adults with intellectual disability (ID). Six regression analyses were conducted. Predictor variables were age, severity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms, level of adaptive functioning, and anxiety; RRB (in general and specific subtypes) was the criterion. Together, the four predictor variables accounted for a significant proportion of the variance in total RRB, Stereotypic Behavior, Compulsive Behavior, Ritualistic/Sameness Behavior, and Restricted Interests. Self-injurious behavior (SIB) was the only subtype of RRB in which the results of the regression analysis were not significant. Anxiety was found …

Comparison Between Listeria Sensu Stricto And Listeria Sensu Lato Strains Identifies Novel Determinants Involved In Infection, Jakob Schardt, Grant Jones, Stefanie Müller-Herbst, Kristina Schauer, Sarah E. F. D'Orazio, Thilo M. Fuchs

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The human pathogen L. monocytogenes and the animal pathogen L. ivanovii, together with four other species isolated from symptom-free animals, form the "Listeria sensu stricto" clade. The members of the second clade, "Listeria sensu lato", are believed to be solely environmental bacteria without the ability to colonize mammalian hosts. To identify novel determinants that contribute to infection by L. monocytogenes, the causative agent of the foodborne disease listeriosis, we performed a genome comparison of the two clades and found 151 candidate genes that are conserved in the Listeria sensu stricto species. Two factors were …

Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Shortage Of Skilled Labor In The Construction Industry And Vocational Education, Heather Linton Hightower Dec 2017

Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Shortage Of Skilled Labor In The Construction Industry And Vocational Education, Heather Linton Hightower

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a noted shortage in skilled labor throughout the construction industry. This shortage has been attributed by some professional organizations to generational differences in the workforce participants. Leading some to suggest that younger generations exhibit character flaws such as laziness at a higher rate than that of older generations. It is the position of this author that this conclusion is flawed. The decrease in vocational training in public schools and the societal preference for America’s youth to attend college rather than learn a skilled trade must be considered primary drivers of this trend. Research will analyze the causation …

Food Waste In The United States: Issues, Ethics, And Solutions, Patrick Erickson Dec 2017

Food Waste In The United States: Issues, Ethics, And Solutions, Patrick Erickson

Honors College Theses

One-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally. In North America and Europe, 280-300 kg of food is wasted per capita each year, with more than 40% of the losses occurring at the retail and consumer level. In this paper, I compare the amount of food wasted in the United States to the amounts wasted by different societies around the world, and discuss the reasons for the food waste, and the consequences that the waste has on our society, in terms of resource consumption and production of pollution. The pragmatic philosophy of Richard Rorty states …

Evolving Role Of Non-Statin Therapy For The Management Of Dyslipidemia And Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: Past, Present, And Future, Evan M. Sisson, Lauren Pamulapati, John D. Bucheit, Michael S. Kelly, Dave L. Dixon

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

A plethora of evidence supports the use of statin therapy for primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), yet residual risk among high-risk patients receiving statin therapy remains high. Moreover, statin-associated muscle symptoms and other statin-associated adverse effects (e.g., increased risk of diabetes mellitus) limit the use of statins in high-risk patient populations. Of particular concern are individuals with established ASCVD, familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), or diabetes mellitus plus multiple ASCVD risk factors, all of whom require high-intensity statins, which are more commonly associated with an increased risk of adverse effects.

We hypothesize that distinct cell phenotypes are governed by different sets of gene master regulators (GMRs) whose strongly protected (by the homeostatic mechanisms) abundance modulates most cell processes by coordinating the expression of numerous genes from the corresponding functional pathways. Gene Commanding Height (GCH), a composite measure of gene expression control and coordination, is introduced to establish the gene hierarchy in each phenotype. If the hypothesis is true, than one can selectively destroy cancer nodules from a heterogeneous tissue by altering the expression of genes whose GCHs are high in cancer but low in normal cell phenotype. Here, we test …

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1–5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency …

From Ground Pools To Treeholes: Convergent Evolution Of Habitat And Phenotype In Aedes Mosquitoes, John Soghigian, Theodore G. Andreadis, Todd P. Livdahl

Biology

Background: Invasive mosquito species are responsible for millions of vector-borne disease cases annually. The global invasive success of Aedes mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus has relied on the human transport of immature stages in container habitats. However, despite the importance of these mosquitoes and this ecological specialization to their widespread dispersal, evolution of habitat specialization in this group has remained largely unstudied. We use comparative methods to evaluate the evolution of habitat specialization and its potential influence on larval morphology, and evaluate whether container dwelling and invasiveness are monophyletic in Aedes. Results: We show that habitat specialization …

An Alternative Episode Of Care Characterization For Supporting The Implementation Of Cluster-Based Bundled Payment, Amit Singh Dec 2017

An Alternative Episode Of Care Characterization For Supporting The Implementation Of Cluster-Based Bundled Payment, Amit Singh

Theses

In recent years, there has been a tremendous increase in health care expenditures in the United States. The most prevalent reimbursement system for health care expenses, Fee-for-service (FFS), has been deemed as one of the main reasons behind the high health care cost. Medicaid and Medicare have been exploring ways to transition from fee-for-service (FFS) to value-based-payment care plans, and Bundle Payments (BP) in particular. Adopting BPs can potentially improve the quality of care and efficiency by encouraging better coordination among the care providers.

We propose a two-step methodology with clustering and classification to characterize episodes of care by fusing …

The HOXB13 G84E variant is associated with risk of prostate cancer (PCa), however the role this variant plays in PCa development is unknown. This study examined 751 cases, 450 relatives and 355 controls to determine the contribution of this variant to PCa risk in Tasmania and investigated HOXB13 gene and protein expression in tumours from nine G84E heterozygote variant and 13 wild-type carriers. Quantitative PCR and immunohistochemistry showed that HOXB13 gene and protein expression did not differ between tumour samples from variant and wild-type carriers. Allele-specific transcription revealed that two of seven G84E carriers transcribed both the variant and wild-type …

The Foundations Of Modern Criminal Law And Gender Inequality, Catalina P. Correa Dec 2017

The Foundations Of Modern Criminal Law And Gender Inequality, Catalina P. Correa

Seattle Journal for Social Justice

Modern penal theory, like prevalent western theories of law, adopts a determined model of autonomy, one in which people are separable from social and family contexts. Taken to the criminal law context, this model proposes people can be defined without taking into account the social context. The use of prisons thus presupposes that individuals can be removed from their communities and families to be reeducated, readapted, treated or—in the retributive approach—simply punished. This notion of autonomy, however, hides from sight the group of people who not only maintain family ties with the men and women in prison, but who also, …

Information Literacy In Ghanaian Academic Institutions: Case Of Kwame Nkrumah University Of Science And Technology (K.N.U.S.T), Ghana, Lilian Atta-Obeng Miss, Ernest Boakye Mr., Fynn Paapa Kwamena Mr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A case of a credit bearing information literacy skills class, offered to first year undergraduate students though not across all colleges at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana was analysed. The survey research methodology was used and questionnaire was distributed to 136 students. The findings indicated that the course was relevant and should be maintained though students’ knowledge on ethical use of information, citation skills, and information searching skills were poor. The study recommends a collaborative partnership between librarians and faculty for the teaching and learning of information literacy skills.

River And Submarine Groundwater Discharge Effects On Diatom Phytoplankton Abundance In The Gulf Of Alaska, Alanna L. Lecher, Katherine R.M. Mackey, Adina Paytan

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

The Gulf of Alaska is a highly productive ecosystem that supports fisheries and subsistence harvesting of marine resources. The highly productive summer season begins with a bloom that is dominated by diatoms. Both river and submarine groundwater discharge have been recognized as substantial terrestrial nutrient (nitrate and silicate) sources to the Gulf’s coastal waters. Here, the response of in-situ phytoplankton to groundwater and river water additions was evaluated via a bioassay incubation experiment. Special attention was given to diatom genera, as previous studies have shown that submarine groundwater discharge preferentially induces growth of diatoms. The abundance of Pseudo-nitzschia spp., Chaetoceros …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Quantification of biomechanical tolerance is necessary for injury prediction and protection of vehicular occupants. This study experimentally quantified lumbar spine axial tolerance during accelerative environments simulating a variety of military and civilian scenarios. Intact human lumbar spines (T12‐L5) were dynamically loaded using a custom‐built drop tower. Twenty‐three specimens were tested at sub‐failure and failure levels consisting of peak axial forces between 2.6 and 7.9 kN and corresponding peak accelerations between 7 and 57 g. Military aircraft ejection and helicopter crashes fall within these high axial acceleration ranges. Testing was stopped following injury detection. Both peak force and acceleration were significant …
