Examining The Association Of Hypermasculinity And Bullying : What Is The Role Of Homophobia?, Caicina Jones Jan 2017

Examining The Association Of Hypermasculinity And Bullying : What Is The Role Of Homophobia?, Caicina Jones

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

As the research on homophobia and bullying continues to grow it is important to ensure that homophobic bullying as a construct is fully explored. In particular, the presence of homophobia in adolescents who in engage in gay-themed or related aggressive behavior has not been investigated. The current study examined the associations of homophobia, exaggerated traditional male role norms (i.e., hypermasculinity), and three bullying behaviors (homophobic epithets use, bullying of homosexuals, and bullying of peers). The overall goal was to identify factors that contribute to bullying behavior. The sample consisted of 199 undergraduate males. Results revealed significant associations among homophobia, hypermasculinity, …

Race, Gender, And The Stigma Of Homelessness, Jeff Syverson Jan 2017

Race, Gender, And The Stigma Of Homelessness, Jeff Syverson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study examines how Americans view the homeless, and how their perceptions are influenced by the race and gender of homeless individuals. It seeks to replicate and extend the research of Phelan, Link, Moore, and Stueve, and uses their findings as a point of departure. Phelan et al. established twenty years ago that the homeless label imposes a stigma, which induces the public to distance themselves from those to whom it is applied. However, Phelan and colleagues did not examine the effects of the race or gender of homeless persons on social distance. Drawing upon attribution theory and using data …

Spatial-Temporal Change Point Detection Problem For Dependent Data, Khulan Luvsandash Jan 2017

Spatial-Temporal Change Point Detection Problem For Dependent Data, Khulan Luvsandash

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

In the classical change detection problem, a sequence of independent and identically distributed observations is monitored and at an unknown time the distribution of the data changes in a certain way. The problem is to detect this change as quickly as possible. However, if the assumption of independence is removed the problem is more challenging than the classical change point detection. Especially, if dependence comes from two directions, namely space and time. Moreover, greatly increased availability of data with the presence of dependency over space and time adds further complication and requires thorough investigation. This non-traditional problem assumption provides abundant …

The Impact Of The Microsoft Office Powerpoint Program On Students With Medical Conditions In A Home And Hospital Program, Vicky Mcclure Jan 2017

The Impact Of The Microsoft Office Powerpoint Program On Students With Medical Conditions In A Home And Hospital Program, Vicky Mcclure

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

While medical progress has brought great change in the epidemiology of child health in the United States, chronic illness and traumatic injuries now account for a growing number of pediatric hospitalizations, posing a major challenge to educators in regards to the availability and provision of academic services. Home-hospital instructional services have been in place for many decades. However, school districts across the nation have home-hospital policies that vary from district to district. Children diagnosed with a chronic illness or injury are absent from school more frequently for extended periods of time, and therefore may require educational adaptations. Home-hospital instructional goals …

The States, The Supreme Court, And Social Change : An Analysis Of Roe V. Wade And Obergefell V. Hodges, Kaitlyn Gradecki Jan 2017

The States, The Supreme Court, And Social Change : An Analysis Of Roe V. Wade And Obergefell V. Hodges, Kaitlyn Gradecki

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study analyzes when and under what conditions the Supreme Court can produce lasting social change. By re-examine Gerald Rosenberg's theory and finding that the Court is too constitutionally constrained to produce change, I argue that the Supreme Court can establish lasting social change. Lasting social change is established through landmark rulings on substantive rights when those issues first have the time to percolate in the states and build the public support necessary to implement the Court's ruling. To test this theory, I analyze two landmark Court rulings. First, I examine the right to abortion in Roe v. Wade (1973) …

The Reciprocal Relationship Between Text Literacy And Music Literacy Among Beginning Band Students, David Lawson Carroll Jan 2017

The Reciprocal Relationship Between Text Literacy And Music Literacy Among Beginning Band Students, David Lawson Carroll

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the reciprocal relationship between text literacy and music literacy through an experimental design. Music teachers and English Language Arts (ELA) teachers often address similar components of literacy, including fluency, comprehension, and symbolic interpretation. The theory of cognitive structuralism maintains that through derivative and correlative subsumption, material that is learned in one context is strengthened when applied in a disparate context. Therefore, ELA and music teachers who work in isolation are missing an opportunity to teach parallel literacy concepts for the common advantage of teachers and students. This study seeks to explain how students enrolled in conventional and …

First World Problems : Neocolonial Discourse In Contemporary American Literature, Tracy Stephens Jan 2017

First World Problems : Neocolonial Discourse In Contemporary American Literature, Tracy Stephens

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation argues that contemporary American literature has a tendency to represent the problems of American life in a manner that mystifies the operation of the global economy and thus perpetuates the American exceptionalist disavowal of US imperialism. I look at a specific set of "first-world problems" described by cultural theorists and depicted within American fiction from 1985 to the present, describing the representation of each problem in multiple texts to emphasize the general trend. These novels focus on first-world experiences and perspectives in isolation from the rest of the world, they decontextualize problems within the US from the neocolonial …

Getting Out The Vote : Studying The Influence Of Social Pressure On Registered Non-Voters, Michael Sweeney Jan 2017

Getting Out The Vote : Studying The Influence Of Social Pressure On Registered Non-Voters, Michael Sweeney

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

No study to date has conducted a field experiment to test the mobilization effect of social pressure on registered inactive voters. This study advances the growing body of scholarly research that examines the influence of appeals on registrants with varying propensities to vote by empirically testing the effect of social pressure on non-voters. Since, arguably, no other incentives have encouraged these non-voters to cast a ballot, we can estimate the value that social pressure has on encouraging voting behavior. In addition, we can gain a better understanding of which social pressure strategy is successful for encouraging registered non-voters to become …

Grit, Goal Importance, And Construals, Robert Pulvermacher Jan 2017

Grit, Goal Importance, And Construals, Robert Pulvermacher

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

It has not been conclusively found that grit is a unique construct, with different antecedents and consequences in comparison to traits such as conscientiousness and self-control. The proposed studies measured a possible relationship between grit, goal importance, and level of construal in the face of obstacles, and tested if this relationship replicates when using conscientiousness or self-control in place of grit. In Study 1, 170 participants (97 women) were asked to list the first ten goals that came to mind, to separate them into goal domains (e.g. "Academic/Career") and to rank these domains in importance. I hypothesized that grit would …

Immigration, Organization-Based Resources, And Urban Violence : An Analysis Of Latino Neighborhoods In Chicago, Rodrigo Dominguez-Martinez Jan 2017

Immigration, Organization-Based Resources, And Urban Violence : An Analysis Of Latino Neighborhoods In Chicago, Rodrigo Dominguez-Martinez

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The Latino paradox of crime suggests that relative to other groups with similar rates of economic disadvantage, Latinos fare a lot better in a wide array of social indices, including the propensity to violence and crime. While previous studies tend to overestimate the role of community members in creating the conditions under which violent crime occurs, very few have examined the direct role of the 'disorganizing' or 'organizing' factors that result from political turf wars. This study will examine the ways in which the mobilization of resources and organizational infrastructures affect the immigration-crime nexus. In an effort to better understand …

Implementing Social And Emotional Learning Standards In A High School Setting : A Case Study, Kimberly Melton Lechner Jan 2017

Implementing Social And Emotional Learning Standards In A High School Setting : A Case Study, Kimberly Melton Lechner

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

A decade ago, Devaney, O'Brian, Resnik, Keister, and Weissberg defined social and emotional learning (SEL) as the process of acquiring skills to identify and manage thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, develop caring, respectful relationships, make responsible decisions, and effectively solve challenging problems. The purpose of this study was to: (a) explore how one high school district utilized existing educational frameworks and practices to implement SEL, (b) understand participants' perspectives regarding the process of SEL implementation as well as its impact, and (c) understand the perceived role of school counselors in SEL implementation. Findings are organized around four key areas: (a) curriculum, …

Karen Refugees Resettled In Aurora, Il : Their Identity, Their Resettlement, Their Oral Histories, Karla Findley Jan 2017

Karen Refugees Resettled In Aurora, Il : Their Identity, Their Resettlement, Their Oral Histories, Karla Findley

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Refugees provide unique subject matter for identity studies as they are not able to continue living in their homeland. Refugees, instead, have been forced to abandon their homes, flee to a different country for safety, and often settle in a third country that is usually an ocean away, both physically and culturally. While concepts of identity are often easy to identify and maintain when a person can be continually surrounded by reaffirming objects, ideas, and people, what about when the refugee is not? This project endeavors to examine the resettlement process of Karen refugees in Aurora, Illinois, and how they …

Towards The Total Synthesis Of 7-Epi-Clusianone, Shubhankar Dutta Jan 2017

Towards The Total Synthesis Of 7-Epi-Clusianone, Shubhankar Dutta

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs) are plant- (Guttiferae) derived natural products. They have fascinating bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4,9-trione or [3.2.1]nonane-2,4,8-trione cores decorated with prenyl or geranyl groups. More than 200 PPAPs have been isolated, but only a few of them have been synthesized, although most of the synthesized PPAPs are of type A and have an exo substituent at C (7). Here, we are trying to make a type B 7-endo PPAP, 7-epi-clusianone. The synthetic plan involves an alkynylation–aldol strategy to construct the bicyclic core. Having established the bicyclic core, the synthesis presents a new challenge: the oxidation of a very hindered …

Illuminate The Pathway Of Membrane Protein Association And Degradation, Zhaoshuai Wang Jan 2017

Illuminate The Pathway Of Membrane Protein Association And Degradation, Zhaoshuai Wang

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Escherichia coli transporter protein AcrB and its homologues are the inner membrane components of the Resistance-Nodulation-Division (RND) family efflux pumps in Gram-negative bacteria. It is well accepted that soluble proteins are only marginally stable, but such insight is missing for membrane proteins. The lack of stability data, including thermodynamic stability and oligomer association affinity is a result of intrinsic difficulties in working with membrane proteins. In addition, the degradation of soluble proteins in E. coli has been extensively studied whereas the degradation process of membrane proteins remains unclear. A focus of my thesis is the validation and development of methods …

Optimizing Bolus Calculator Sensitivity Setting Using Self-Organizing Map Neural Network, Eric Johnson Jan 2017

Optimizing Bolus Calculator Sensitivity Setting Using Self-Organizing Map Neural Network, Eric Johnson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that affects millions of people around the world. This disease, which has no cure, is treated by injecting insulin into the body. This is done to balance out the body's blood glucose level to help it stay within a healthy range. Blood glucose outside this range can cause many complications and can lead to death if left untreated. In order to maintain a healthy blood glucose level, many technologies have been developed, including a bolus calculator equipped insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor. The monitor takes blood sugar readings and passes them …

Perceptions Of Acceptability And Level Of Aggressiveness Of Female-Perpetrated, Versus Male Perpetrated, Intimate Partner Violence, Sarah Ramsey Jan 2017

Perceptions Of Acceptability And Level Of Aggressiveness Of Female-Perpetrated, Versus Male Perpetrated, Intimate Partner Violence, Sarah Ramsey

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Research suggests that female-perpetrated intimate partner violence against a male partner (i.e., FTM IPV) may be viewed differently than male-perpetrated IPV against a female partner (i.e., MTF IPV) with regard to how acceptable and aggressive these acts are perceived. The current study utilized a unique methodological approach to examine 240 participants' (117 men and 123 women) perceptions of acceptability and aggressiveness while viewing audio-visual depictions of MTF IPV and FTM IPV scenarios. Contrary to predictions, results indicated that female participants rated the FTM, but not the MTF, IPV scenario as significantly more acceptable than male participants. No significant differences were …

Piercy, Pop Music, And The Patriarchy : Feminist Activism In The Sung And Written Word, Andrea Lohf Jan 2017

Piercy, Pop Music, And The Patriarchy : Feminist Activism In The Sung And Written Word, Andrea Lohf

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

What is missing in feminist studies, literary studies, and studies of popular music is a comparison of lyrics with the verses of a feminist poet like Marge Piercy. Piercy is a feminist voice from the beginning of the Second Wave of the Movement, and in her continued dedication to its cause, she remains in touch with the same values that are alive and well in the lyrics of Meghan Trainor, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift. Reading these musicians' lyrics alongside Piercy's verse, I provide greater context to enjoy and understand the gravity of both Piercy's ideas and the ideas …

Prevalence And Transmission Of Cryptosporidium And Giardia Infections Amongst Lemurs, Humans, Domestic Mammals And Invasive Rats In Tsinjoarivo, Madagascar, Laurie Spencer

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are ubiquitous enteric protozoan pathogens that infect humans, domestic animals, and wildlife worldwide. These pathogens are known to cause gastroenteritis in their hosts, often being fatal in immunocompromised individuals. Both parasites are zoonotic and cross-species transmissions have occurred between humans, wildlife and domestic animals. Cryptosporidium and Giardia infections are reported in young children in Madagascar; however, the extent of these infections throughout the Malagasy population is relatively unknown and unstudied. The rainforest of Tsinjoarivo, Madagascar, contains areas with pristine forests as well as fragmented forests which have been created by human encroachment and deforestation. Since protozoan parasites …

Large But Uneven Reduction In Fish Size Across Species In Relation To Changing Sea Temperatures, Itai Van Rijn, Yehezkel Buba, John Delong, Moshe Kiflawi, Jonathan Belmaker Jan 2017

Large But Uneven Reduction In Fish Size Across Species In Relation To Changing Sea Temperatures, Itai Van Rijn, Yehezkel Buba, John Delong, Moshe Kiflawi, Jonathan Belmaker

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Ectotherms often attain smaller body sizes when they develop at higher temperatures. This phenomenon, known as the temperature size rule, has important consequences for global fisheries, whereby ocean warming is predicted to result in smaller fish and reduced biomass. However, the generality of this phenomenon and the mechanisms that drive it in natural populations remain unresolved. In this study we document the maximal size of 74 fish species along a steep temperature gradient in the Mediterranean Sea and find strong support for the temperature size rule. Importantly, we additionally find that size reduction in active fish species is dramatically larger …

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios

This Peer Review of Teaching Project portfolio focuses on the Animal Physiology II course which is required for first year veterinary medicine students. Weekly quizzes assess baseline knowledge and had been administered individually and in groups. I hypothesized the discontinuation of group quizzes would increase student effort when preparing for quizzes. Unit exams involve scenario-based questions and require students to apply information. I hypothesized the implementation of group exams would help under-performing students improve their ability to apply information they had learned. Exams were still taken individually prior to being taken in groups to encourage adequate preparation. Student impacts were …
