“Letting Kids Be Kids”: Youth Voice And Activism To Reform Foster Care And Promote “Normalcy”, Bernard P. Perlmutter

Books and Book Chapters

In this chapter, I examine stories that foster care youth tell to legislatures, courts, policymakers, and the public to influence policy decisions. The stories told by these children are analogized to victim truth testimony, analyzed as a therapeutic, procedural, and developmental process, and examined as a catalyst for systemic accountability and change. Youth stories take different forms and appear in different media: testimony in legislatures, courts, research surveys or studies; opinion editorials and interviews in newspapers or blog posts; digital stories on YouTube; and artistic expression. Lawyers often serve as conduits for youth storytelling, translating their clients’ stories to the …

Self-Compassion : What Meaning And Role Does It Play In The Lives Of Women Who Experience Anxiety And Depression In The Perinatal Period, Cindy Cranswick

Theses

With one in five Australian women suffering from perinatal anxiety and depression, there is a constant need for a greater understanding of the lived experience of motherhood. This research investigated the role and meaning of self-compassion in the lives of women in the perinatal period who experience anxiety, depression and psychological distress. There is a growing body of evidence to support findings that self-compassion is an important source of emotional and psychological well-being, but little evidence on the potential role it plays in the lives of women in the perinatal period. A qualitative approach was chosen to undertake this research …

Mobile Learning In Early Childhood Education: A School-University Partnership Model, Serena Davie

Theses

Mobile learning (mLearning) devices are ideal for 21st century learning. mLearning devices are light and, therefore, mobile so that young children can use them anywhere. Examples of mLearning devices are tablet computers, programmable robots such as Bee-Bots and robotic Lego. The term 21st century learning is used around the world and includes the skills of collaboration, communication, new literacy, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. New literacy has emerged because of new technologies and being literate in the 21st century now includes being digitally literate. However, mLearning is not widely used in early childhood education despite the fact that schools are …

Recidivism Rates Among Juveniles With Mental Illness, Kia Chevon Russell Jan 2017

Recidivism Rates Among Juveniles With Mental Illness, Kia Chevon Russell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Treating mental illness is imperative to help reduce criminal justice involvement within the juvenile population. Receiving mental health care will help decrease the likelihood for youth to reoffend, ultimately reducing recidivism rates. Past studies showed there are risk factors associated with juveniles and recidivism; however, very few studies have examined what factors are prevalent after services have been received. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that increase the risk of recidivism among juveniles who have received psychiatric stabilization in Harris County, Texas. Risk factors that were assessed included age, gender, ethnicity, and criminal offense. The psychodynamic perspective …

A Legal Study On The Internal Control System For Direction Of Legislation In Korea, Sungbum Kwon Jan 2017

A Legal Study On The Internal Control System For Direction Of Legislation In Korea, Sungbum Kwon

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

The concept of internal control began in accounting professional groups, gradually expanded to the administrative control and the risk management from accounting control, and became an important area that cannot be excluded from the operation of the public companies in the U.S.

When the Enron scandal struck the credibility of the stock market in the U.S. in 2001, the authorities implemented reformative measures including the SOX enactment to protect investors. Although there has been a controversy over this legislation since the enactment of the SOX, it appears that the U.S. capital market has been restoring confidence with the efforts of …

Birds Of A Feather: Patterns Of Judicial Decision-Making At The International Court Of Justice, 1946-2015, Kai-Chih Chang Jan 2017

Birds Of A Feather: Patterns Of Judicial Decision-Making At The International Court Of Justice, 1946-2015, Kai-Chih Chang

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

The technical legal expertise of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, is rarely questioned. However, from its inception critics have questioned its partiality by drawing attention to apparent extrajudicial influences on its decisions. While there has been no lack of research assessing the ICJ judges’ voting behavior, methodological limitations of prior research designs have stymied empirical assessments of the extent and nature of extrajudicial factors’ influence over the ICJ judges’ voting behaviors. This dissertation challenges previous research concluding that political and military alignments have no effect on judicial decision-making. In contrast to …

Screening For Sleep Apnea In Patients With Hypertension Using The Stop-Bang Tool In A Primary Care Setting, Natalie R. Jennette

DNP Projects

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common cause of high blood pressure but often undetected in patients with hypertension. Screening tools for OSA exist but are underutilized. This project aimed to identify current practices and perceptions related to screening for OSA in patients with hypertension and improve primary care provider knowledge of OSA and screening rates using the STOP-BANG screening tool. The providers acknowledged the importance of screening patients with hypertension but there was no increase in screening after education was provided. Effective screening tools exist but effective strategies to bring this evidence to practice need to be explored further.
