Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

I work in various capacities at the hospital that are interprofessional in nature. I bring these experiences to JCIPE as a facilitator for the student groups in the Health Mentors Program (HMP) as well as serving on the JCIPE HMP curricular committee. Both levels of involvement within JCIPE have been rewarding experiences.

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

As part of the two-year curriculum for my Master's degree in Occupational Therapy, I engaged in the Health Mentors Program. Additionally, I had the honor of volunteering with No One Dies Alone through the student IPE interest group throughout my last year. My main involvement with JCIPE was through Student Hotspotting, beginning July, 2016 (offered through Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers Primary Care Progress, and Association of American Medical Colleges). I had the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team of eight students and four faculty members to identify "super-utilizing" patients with complex psychosocial and healthcare needs. As a team, …

The 360 Degree Approach: Patient Forward App Development In The Healthcare Space, Rob Mruczek, Tori Styner

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

The Jefferson Teamwork Observation Guide (JTOG) is a responsive, modern mobile application designed to bring this honesty to healthcare. The app helps to evaluate teamwork at a healthcare system from all possible angles, giving a true 360 degree view of the experience of all participants in a medical setting. A patient's experience in a health system is hardly ever the result of a single employee of that health system, but rather a team of people dedicated to that patient's care, who all have a role in taking care of the patient's particular needs. The best teams, just like the best …

Listen In Silence: Narrative Medicine With Interprofessional Teams, Deepthiman Gowda Md, Mph

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

My interest in health humanities began in medical school when I took an elective on literature and medicine with Robert Coles. Reading works by Raymond Carver and William Carlos Williams, we explored the patient's experience of illness and probed the ethical and emotional challenges of giving care. It seemed as if a curtain had been pulled to reveal marvelous hidden rooms, places where new understandings of health and illness could be had. I recognized that some things that were true about illness could not be understood using a scientific lens. The singular, lived experience of those who are sick or …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Background

It is well established in the literature that patient outcomes and quality of care are optimized when disciplines work together (Chonienne et al., 2010). Interprofessional practice (IPP) among health professionals is even more important when working with individuals exposed to trauma, which can result in disrupted physical, cognitive, and social development, and manifest in an array of physical and psychological symptoms (e.g. Felitti & Anda, 1998). Consequently, professionals across social service and healthcare systems may encounter and simultaneously serve trauma-affected individuals. However, healthcare and behavioral health systems are historically fragmented and frequently fail to provide the coordinated and integrated …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Greetings to all as we embark upon the last weeks of 2017! This fall has been a busy time for JCIPE in many different ways. At the end of September, thirteen JCIPE staff, faculty and students attended the Collaborative Practice conference held in Banff, Alberta, Canada. JCIPE delivered one invited pre-conference workshop and five peer-reviewed, accepted live presentations focusing on a wide range of our activities including Hotspotting, the Health Mentors Program, the Jefferson Teamwork Observation Guide (JTOG) and programmatic sustainability. We learned a lot relative to new program ideas, assessment suggestions and faculty development - just to name a …

Effects Of An Alcohol Education Program On Improving Knowledge, Attitudes And Satisfaction Of Registered Nurses Caring For Patients Undergoing Alcohol Withdrawal, Luis Medina Dec 2017

Effects Of An Alcohol Education Program On Improving Knowledge, Attitudes And Satisfaction Of Registered Nurses Caring For Patients Undergoing Alcohol Withdrawal, Luis Medina

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Managing and caring for patients who are undergoing alcohol withdrawal presents challenges for nurses in an inpatient setting. These challenges are influenced by factors such as negative attitudes, lack of knowledge and poor satisfaction. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to determine whether the effects of implementing an alcohol educational program would improve knowledge and satisfaction while reducing negative attitudes. This program implemented education on alcoholism, alcohol withdrawal and the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment of Alcohol Scale, Revised (CIWA-Ar) monitoring tool which would be incorporated into the everyday practice of nurses caring for patients undergoing alcohol withdrawal. The …

Implementation Of An Opioid Risk Assessment Tool, Stacey Cuomo Dec 2017

Implementation Of An Opioid Risk Assessment Tool, Stacey Cuomo

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

The increased prevalence of opioid use in society has led to an increase in surgical patients with a history of such use. Patients who use or are addicted to opioids have different tolerances and responses to anesthesia than non-opioid users, and will require different care than non-users both pre- and post-operatively. The means to identify this population prior to a surgical procedure is needed as a way to organize, plan and manage patient care during the perioperative period. An Opioid Risk Assessment Tool (ORAT) was used as a way to streamline the process of identifying these patients. This paper addresses …

The Effectiveness Of Nurse-Driven Early Mobility Protocol, Viktoriya Fridman

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this quality initiative is to introduce the nurse driven evidence-based practice change related to patient mobility in the hospital setting with the aim to improve nurse knowledge, attitude, and behavior on a medical-surgical unit.

Significance of Project: The proposed DNP quality project is devised from the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) Choosing Wisely campaign unique to the elements of “don’t let older adults lay in bed or only get up to a chair during their hospital stay” to achieve a practice change. A significant aspect of patient care in a hospital setting is patient …

The Gender Wage Gap: Causes, Consequences, And Remedies, Yaveline Aly Dec 2017

The Gender Wage Gap: Causes, Consequences, And Remedies, Yaveline Aly

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Women are almost half of the workforce, yet they are still getting pay less than men. They receive more college degree than men. Hispanic women and African American women get pay even less than men. For every 40 hours that Americans women work, they only get pay 80 cents for every dollar paid to men. Wage discrimination is a reality. Society needs to take a stand and fight for wages equality (NWLC.org). Although the equal pay act was implemented 50 years ago, women of every race and education level are still getting pay less than men. It only gets worse …

Identifying Significant Components Of A Sexuality Education Program For Students With Severe Disabilities, Amanda Brennen Dec 2017

Identifying Significant Components Of A Sexuality Education Program For Students With Severe Disabilities, Amanda Brennen

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The body of knowledge in the field of sex education that has been modified for individuals with disabilities is currently lacking. There are currently no evidence based practices for sexuality education. The programs that currently exist are either not effective for the severe population or there is no research to support its use. However, people that are considered in the population of severe special education could benefit greatly from a sexuality program that is evidence based.

The researcher conducted a study to determine the topics that are common in the literature and that are important to teachers and their with …

O'Connell, Vamsi Vasireddy, Megan Littrell, Andria Rusk, Actwatch Group, Anne Musuva, Waqo Ejersa, Rebecca Kiptui, Dorothy Memusi, Edward Abwao

Collected Faculty Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Since 2004, Kenya's national malaria treatment guidelines have stipulated artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) as first-line treatment for uncomplicated malaria, and since 2014, confirmatory diagnosis of malaria in all cases before treatment has been recommended. A number of strategies to support national guidelines have been implemented in the public and private sectors in recent years. A nationally-representative malaria outlet survey, implemented across four epidemiological zones, was conducted between June and August 2016 to provide practical evidence to inform strategies and policies in Kenya towards achieving national malaria control goals.

RESULTS: A total of 17,852 outlets were screened and 2271 …

Debriefing With Reflection: Best Practice For Learning In Simulation In Pre-Licensure Nursing Education, Mary Mcdermott Dec 2017

Debriefing With Reflection: Best Practice For Learning In Simulation In Pre-Licensure Nursing Education, Mary Mcdermott

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this project was intended to transform the outdated method of conducting debrief after simulation by implementing a good judgment model and integrating the concept of “advocacy-inquiry.” This implementation was expected to reduce demoralizing and anxiety producing debrief experiences and improve student reflection and learning in order for students to more deliberately link theory with practice.

Significance: The debrief is often recognized as the component of simulation in which the most effective learning occurs. It is the time when students are provided opportunity to reflect on thoughts, actions and behaviors. Unfortunately, many nursing students often experience undue …

Professional Learning Outcomes That Teachers Experience As A Result Of Implementing A Community-Based Instruction Program: A Qualitative Case Study, Suzan Radwan Dec 2017

Professional Learning Outcomes That Teachers Experience As A Result Of Implementing A Community-Based Instruction Program: A Qualitative Case Study, Suzan Radwan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative instrumental case study was to explore the professional learning outcomes of teachers as they implement community-based instruction programs for students with disabilities in a New Jersey school district. The study was viewed through the theoretical lens of disabilities studies in education, which posits that the term disability is a socially constructed concept that leads to the systematic social and environmental disadvantage of people with disabilities.

The sample included public school teachers who have participated in a community-based instruction program for students with disabilities in Mountainview Public Schools in New Jersey. Data collection methods included semi-structured …

A Framework For Linking Population Model Development With Ecological Risk Assessment Objectives, Sandy Raimondo, Matthew Etterson, Nathan Pollesch, Kristina Garber, Andrew Kanarek, Wade Lehmann, Jill Awkerman Dec 2017

A Framework For Linking Population Model Development With Ecological Risk Assessment Objectives, Sandy Raimondo, Matthew Etterson, Nathan Pollesch, Kristina Garber, Andrew Kanarek, Wade Lehmann, Jill Awkerman

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The value of models that link organism-level impacts to the responses of a population in ecological risk assessments (ERAs) has been demonstrated extensively over the past few decades. There is little debate about the utility of these models to translate multiple organism-level endpoints into a holistic interpretation of effect to the population; however, there continues to be a struggle for actual application of these models as a common practice in ERA. Although general frameworks for developing models for ERA have been proposed, there is limited guidance on when models should be used, in what form, and how to interpret model …

Removal Of Sulfur Dioxide From Flue Gas Using Absorbent Prepared By Water And Steam Hydration, Teong Lee Keat, Mohamed Abdul Rahman, Bhatia Subhash

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Active absorbent for flue gas desulfurization was prepared from coal fly ash, calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4 ) by hydro-thermal process; steam and water hydration. The absorbents were examined and compared for its micro-structural properties. The experiments were conducted based on Design of Experiments (DOE) according to 24 factorial design. The effect of various absorbent preparation variables such as hydration period (Factor A), ratio of CaO to fly ash (Factor B), amount of calcium sulfate used (Factor C) and drying temperature (Factor D) towards the BET surface area of the absorbent were studied. The BET surface area of …

Does Government Contracting Have A Remedies Problem? A Response To Eric M. Singer, Competitive Public Contracts, Steven W. Feldman Dec 2017

Does Government Contracting Have A Remedies Problem? A Response To Eric M. Singer, Competitive Public Contracts, Steven W. Feldman

Nevada Law Journal Forum

In his provocative article, Competitive Public Contracts, Eric M. Singer claims that deficient contractor performance is inherent in government contracting. Singer asserts that, “fundamentally,” public purchasing has a “contract-remedies problem”—the absence of both any “credible threat” and any “effective contract remedy to deter or correct [contractor] misbehavior.” Unlike private buyers, who have plausible threats to motivate contractors to perform properly, governments are said to “often” labor under intrinsic and extrinsic limitations that undermine remedial alternatives. Consequently, Singer argues that governments (especially state and local agencies) have no “effective contract remedy” to induce improved contractor performance. Among these “ineffective” remedies, according …

The Effect Of Time, Roasting Temperature, And Grind Size On Caffeine And Chlorogenic Acid Concentrations In Cold Brew Coffee, Niny Z. Rao, Megan Fuller Dec 2017

The Effect Of Time, Roasting Temperature, And Grind Size On Caffeine And Chlorogenic Acid Concentrations In Cold Brew Coffee, Niny Z. Rao, Megan Fuller

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

The extraction kinetics and equilibrium concentrations of caffeine and 3-chlorogenic acid (3-CGA) in cold brew coffee were investigated by brewing four coffee samples (dark roast/medium grind, dark roast/coarse grind, medium roast/medium grind, medium roast/coarse grind) using cold and hot methods. 3-CGA and caffeine were found at higher concentrations in cold brew coffee made with medium roast coffees, rather than dark roast. The grind size did not impact 3-CGA and caffeine concentrations of cold brew samples significantly, indicating that the rate determining step in extraction for these compounds did not depend on surface area. Caffeine concentrations in cold brew coarse grind …

Recycling Clean Energy, Amanda Vaughn Dec 2017

Recycling Clean Energy, Amanda Vaughn

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

Nuclear energy is one of the cleanest sources of energy available. It does not produce carbon dioxide as the beta decay of Uranium is an exothermic spontaneous process that produces helium. Unfortunately, nuclear waste storage is a large problem in the United States, the cost of maintaining the waste storage facilities alone is 46.7 billion dollars. There is the constant threat of leaks and contaminated water leaking into drinking supplies. Then there is the danger of the current geological storage tanks lasting longer than humanity and spoiling the future environment as current nuclear waste takes millions of years to decompose …
