Background—Delirium is a common, morbid, and costly postoperative complication.. We aimed to identify blood-based postoperative delirium markers in a nested case control study of older surgical patients using a proteomics approach followed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) validation.
Methods and Materials—The Successful Aging after Elective Surgery Study enrolled dementia-free adults age ≥70 undergoing major scheduled non-cardiac surgery (N=566; 24% delirium). Plasma was collected at 4 timepoints: preoperatively (PREOP), post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), postoperative day 2 (POD2) and 1 month follow-up (PO1MO). Matched pairs were selected for the independent discovery (39 pairs) and replication cohorts (36 pairs), which were …

Healthy Eating: How Do We Define It And Measure It? What’S The Evidence?, Christy C. Tangney, Beth A. Staffileno, Heather Rasmussen
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
A healthy diet can be defined in many ways, including defining one’s food intake by a dietary pattern. As described in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee report, there are several defined dietary patterns associated with lower rates of chronic diseases. These include the Healthy Eating Index, Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, and those based on the Mediterranean diet. This review will focus on guiding health care professionals, including nurse practitioners, how a healthy diet pattern is defined, how it is measured, and a summary of recent evidence supporting the healthfulness of these dietary patterns.

Using Pentosidine And Hydroxyproline To Predict Age And Sex In An Avian Species, Brian S. Dorr, Randal S. Stahl, Katie C. Hanson-Dorr, Carol A. Furcolow
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
All living organisms are subject to senescence accompanied by progressive and irreversible physiological changes. The error damage and cross-linking theories suggest that cells and tissues are damaged by an accumulation of cross-linked proteins, slowing down bodily processes and resulting in aging. A major category of these cross-linked proteins are compounds called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). We investigated the relationship between accumulation of the AGE, pentosidine (Ps), and hydroxyproline (HYP) a post-translationally modified amino acid, with age, sex, and breeding status (breeder/ nonbreeder) from skin samples of known age (i.e., banded as fledglings), free-ranging Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus, …

Altruism And Life Satisfaction Among Lgbt Older Adults, Boaz Kahana, Eva Kahana, Tirth Bhatta, Minzhi Ye, Jiao Yu
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
Altruistic attitudes have been found in our prior longitudinal studies to promote positive affective states and life satisfaction in late life (Kahana, Bhatta, Lovegreen, Kahana and Midlarsky 2013). Such attitudes reflect a willingness to help others and an orientation characterized by generosity of spirit. It may be anticipated that such qualities are easier to maintain for older adults who are well integrated members of society and who do not face stigma and discrimination. In this chapter, we extend our research interest in altruism and in prosocial behaviors to LGBT older adults, who had encountered adversity and lack of acceptance in …

Impact Of Staff Education On Geriatric Polypharmacy, Valerie Ikemefuna
Impact Of Staff Education On Geriatric Polypharmacy, Valerie Ikemefuna
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Polypharmacy, the simultaneous use of multiple drugs to treat a single ailment or condition, is a
major health problem among the elderly population that contributes to adverse drug side events,
health risks, hospital readmissions, morbidity, and mortality. Therefore, a staff education
program geared toward reduction of such adverse drug events was implemented at a single site.
The purpose of the project was to determine if the staff education program would increase
knowledge of adverse drug events due to geriatric polypharmacy. The Orem theory provided the
theoretical support for the project, and the Iowa model guided the evidence-based practice
change process. …

Incidence Rate Of Delirium After Cardiac Surgery And Feasibility Of A Delirium Prediction Rule, Kelly Bohl
Incidence Rate Of Delirium After Cardiac Surgery And Feasibility Of A Delirium Prediction Rule, Kelly Bohl
DNP Projects
Delirium is an acute, temporary cognitive disorder that is characterized by a change in mental status, altered level of judgement, and changes in perception and behavior. Elderly patients who undergo open cardiac surgery are particularly at risk for developing delirium postoperatively. Although it is a temporary disorder, there are many consequences associated with delirium after cardiac surgery, including a longer length of stay in the hospital, long term functional decline, a greater use of health care resources and an increase in mortality risk. The purpose of this project was to identify the one-year incidence of postoperative delirium after cardiac surgery …
Changing Perceptions Of Loss: The Influence Of Generation Effects And Message Framing, Kaylee Brown
Changing Perceptions Of Loss: The Influence Of Generation Effects And Message Framing, Kaylee Brown
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This study is a three-part survey that examines how loss can be experienced differently based on one's generation and the way a message about loss is framed. More specifically, participants of all ages read a mock article that framed loss experiences positively or negatively, and then participants answered questions regarding their own loss experiences. It was hypothesized that, due to generational variance, older vs. younger individuals may deal with loss quite differently and, as such, may react to the positively and negatively framed loss articles as a function of their ages. As hypothesized, significant relationships among article type and age …
The Socio-Political And Economic Causes Of Natural Disasters, Nicole Southard
The Socio-Political And Economic Causes Of Natural Disasters, Nicole Southard
CMC Senior Theses
To effectively prevent and mitigate the outbreak of natural disasters is a more pressing issue in the twenty-first century than ever before. The frequency and cost of natural disasters is rising globally, most especially in developing countries where the most severe effects of climate change are felt. However, while climate change is indeed a strong force impacting the severity of contemporary catastrophes, it is not directly responsible for the exorbitant cost of the damage and suffering incurred from natural disasters -- both financially and in terms of human life. Rather, the true root causes of natural disasters lie within the …
No-Place, New Places: Death And Its Rituals In Urban Asia, Lily Kong
No-Place, New Places: Death And Its Rituals In Urban Asia, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In many Asian cities, particularly those that confront increasing land scarcity, the conversion from burial to cremation has been encouraged by state agencies in the last several decades. From Hong Kong to Seoul to Singapore, planning agencies have sought to reduce the use of space for the dead, in order to release land for the use of the living. More secular guiding principles regarding efficient land use in these cities had originally come up against the symbolic values invested in burial spaces, resulting in conflicts between different value systems. In more recent years, however, the shift to cremation and columbaria …
Telemedicine For The American Indian/Alaska Native Population, Janine M. Good
Telemedicine For The American Indian/Alaska Native Population, Janine M. Good
Senior Honors Theses
When compared to other Americans’ health, a worse health status is seen among the American Indian and Alaska Native population. American Indians and Alaska Natives are faced with numerous disparities in healthcare, such as decreased access to healthcare. Additionally, healthcare data about this group are missing. Although health beliefs and traditions can differ among tribes, there are also similarities. Telemedicine is the use of technology (i.e., phone, videoconferencing) to deliver healthcare. This healthcare service may be beneficial for this population’s healthcare needs because of telemedicine’s possible advantages. Although telemedicine also has disadvantages, a knowledge of and respect for American Indian …

A diet consisting of a high intake of saturated fat and refined sugars is characteristic of a Western-diet and has been shown to have a substantial negative effect on human health. Expression proteomics were used to investigate changes to the parietal lobe proteome of rhesus monkeys consuming either a high fat and sugar (HFS) diet, a HFS diet supplemented with resveratrol (HFS+RSV), or a healthy control diet for 2 years. Here we discuss the modifications in the levels of 12 specific proteins involved in various cellular systems including metabolism, neurotransmission, structural integrity, and general cellular signaling following a nutritional intervention. …

Improving Cognitive Predictors And Everyday Outcomes In Adults With Hiv, Shameka L. Cody
Improving Cognitive Predictors And Everyday Outcomes In Adults With Hiv, Shameka L. Cody
All ETDs from UAB
As adults age with HIV, they may encounter challenges with cognitive impairments. Perhaps, the neurobiological effects of HIV, subtle lifestyle changes, and the aging process may negatively influence cognitive functioning. Some cognitive impairments may interfere with everyday functioning and even compromise quality of life. In this dissertation, three articles were presented which focused on the overall theme of HIV and cognition. Article 1, a review of literature published in the Neurobiology of Disease, focused on how HIV affects the brain independently and the synergistic effects of HIV and aging on cognitive health. Also, the article closed with a section on …

Cognitive Correlates Of Driving Behavior In Older Adults With Hiv, Caitlin Northcutt Pope
All ETDs from UAB
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) currently affects over 1 million individuals in the United States. It is estimated that by the year 2020, up to 70% of individuals with HIV in the United States will be ages 50 and older, as these individuals live longer due to more advanced medicine and later diagnosis. Aging research suggests individuals with HIV may be at risk for accelerated or accentuated aging making age-related deficits, particularly with cognition and everyday functioning, of public concern. The current study investigated the complex associations between age, HIV disease state, cognition, health, and driving in 139 older adults (Mage …
An Examination Of The Neuropsychological Construct Executive Function And How It May Be Impacted By Cognitive And Exercise Interventions, Erica Schmidt
All ETDs from UAB
Background: There is a growing body of literature supporting the beneficial effects of cognitive training and exercise training on executive function (EF) in older adults. More recently, evidence is amassing that interventions which combine cognitive and physical activity, for example, exergames, may confer even greater cognitive benefits. Comparison of EF interventions for older adults requires more investigation and would benefit from improved operationalization of the EF construct and better understanding of factors which predict baseline EF in older adults. Methods and Results: Fifty-seven sedentary, non-gamer, community dwelling older adults were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups (computerized cognitive …

Management Faculty Publications
We examined the effect of incongruence in the areas of worklife (AWL) on burnout of nurses. Specifically, we were interested in identifying the most important AWL and interactions among AWL and psychological resilience in explaining nurses’ burnout. Incongruence in the worklife escalates burnout and resilience is a coping trait. The phenomenon needs to be studied in developing countries where entirely different health dilemmas exist. A cross sectional survey was conducted from 147 nurses. SEM through AMOS 21 and Process Macro of SPSS was used for data analysis. Two AWL namely control and reward, emerged out to be the most important …

Introduction
It is not known whether the age-related increase in fatigability of fast dynamic contractions in lower limb muscles also occurs in upper limb muscles. We compared age-related fatigability and variability of maximal-effort repeated dynamic contractions in the knee extensor and elbow flexor muscles; and determined associations between fatigability, variability of velocity between contractions and functional performance.
Methods
35 young (16 males; 21.0 ± 2.6 years) and 32 old (18 males; 71.3 ± 6.2 years) adults performed a dynamic fatiguing task involving 90 maximal-effort, fast, concentric, isotonic contractions (1 contraction/3 s) with a load equivalent to 20% maximal voluntary isometric …

A Labor Of Love: Women's Perspectives On Gender And Identity In Informal Caregiving, Kirby O'Hara Hurd
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The elderly population (adults 65 and over) is larger than at any time in history, thanks to improved access to healthcare, advances in medical technology, and health services focused on addressing the needs of aging adults. However, support for this growing population remains insufficient; the costs of in-home and residential care are high, and consequently, family members often become providers of informal, unpaid care. Presently, there is inadequate literature regarding the academic study of family members providing informal caregiving, especially from a perspective that emphasizes sociological principles and theories. Existing studies of the family caregiver phenomenon show that middle-aged adult …

The Policy Nexus: Panhandling, Social Capital And Policy Failure, Amanda R. Tillotson, Laura Lein
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In this paper, we analyze a unique mixed methods data set based on survey responses (n=108) and intensive interviews (n=18) with panhandlers in Austin, Texas. We examine the way in which failures of primary and secondary social capital interact to create the conditions of extreme poverty and homelessness that lead to panhandling. We find that a large majority of these individuals are working-age adults who lack access to social policy supports that would allow them to weather periods of unemployment produced by health issues and other personal difficulties.

When ‘Places’ Include Pets: Broadening The Scope Of Relational Approaches To Promoting Aging-In-Place, Ann M. Toohey, Jennifer A. Hewson, Cindy L. Adams, Melanie J. Rock
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Aging-in-place is a well-established concept, but discussions rarely consider that many older adults live with pets. In a ‘pet-friendly’ city, we conducted semi-structured interviews to explore perspectives of community-based social support agencies that promote aging-in-place, and those of animal welfare agencies. Applying a relational ecology theoretical framework, we found that pets may contribute to feeling socially- situated, yet may also exacerbate constraints on autonomy experienced by some older adults. Pet-related considerations at times led to discretionary acts of more-than-human solidarity, but also created paradoxical situations for service-providers, impacting their efforts to assist older adults. A shortage of pet-friendly affordable housing …
