Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Objectives—This study addresses methodological and theoretical questions about the association between affect and physical health. Specifically, we examine the role of affect variability and its interaction with mean levels of affect to predict antibody (Ab) levels in response to an influenza vaccination.

Methods—Participants (N = 83) received the vaccination and completed daily diary measures of affect four times a day for 13 days. At one and four months post-vaccination, blood was collected from the participants to assess Ab levels.

Results—Findings indicate that affect variability and its interaction with mean levels of affect predict an individual’s immune response. …

Hospice Utilization Of Medicare Beneficiaries In Hawai‘I Compared To Other States, Deborah Taira, Merle Kataoka-Yahiro, Angela Sy

Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal

The objective is to examine hospice utilization among Medicare beneficiaries in Hawai‘i compared to other states. Data were from the 2014 Medicare Hospice Utilization and Payment Public Use File, which included information on 4,025 hospice providers, more than 1.3 million hospice beneficiaries, and over $15 billion in Medicare payments. Multivariable linear regression models were estimated to compare hospice utilization in Hawai‘i to that of other states. Control variables included age, gender, and type of Medicare coverage. Medicare beneficiaries using hospice in Hawai‘i differed significantly from beneficiaries in other states in several ways. Hawai‘i beneficiaries were more likely to be Asian …

Demystifying Research: Accessing & Understanding Evidence For Clinical Practice, Kimberly A. Murphy, Meredith Poore Harold, Mary Huston Nov 2017

Demystifying Research: Accessing & Understanding Evidence For Clinical Practice, Kimberly A. Murphy, Meredith Poore Harold, Mary Huston

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

The demands on clinicians for evidence-based practice (EBP) are great. However, many speech-language pathologists have received little to no training in how to ‘do’ EBP. In this presentation, we aim to describe and provide practical suggestions for two of the steps in EBP—accessing, then reading and interpreting research to inform clinical decision-making. Our goal is to give clinicians the tools and confidence they need to grow into expert clinicians.

Learner Outcome 1: Describe the components of evidence-based practice (EBP)

Learner Outcome 2: Identify ways to access research

Learner Outcome 3: Identify steps in reading and evaluating the …

An Integrative Review: Routine Screening For Adverse Childhood Experiences Of Adults In Primary Care Settings, Maura Walsh Nov 2017

An Integrative Review: Routine Screening For Adverse Childhood Experiences Of Adults In Primary Care Settings, Maura Walsh

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events occurring in children prior to the age of 18 years. They include physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. ACEs have been associated with an increased risk of health-risk behaviors, leading to increased risk of chronic diseases and disability in adulthood. ACEs screening is not currently part of routine health assessment of adults in primary care settings. An integrative review of the current evidence supports that primary care providers believe their role is to screen adults for childhood traumas. Unfortunately, primary care providers lack confidence, education, time, and knowledge of the ACE …

The Good Crisis: How Population Stabilization Can Foster A Healthy U.S. Economy, Owen G. Mordaunt Nov 2017

The Good Crisis: How Population Stabilization Can Foster A Healthy U.S. Economy, Owen G. Mordaunt

International Dialogue

Even though there is a notion of a birth dearth, this text aims at debunking the common belief that a population that is not growing due to declining fertility spells disaster for our world. The population has declined over time, but in reality the world continues to add 83 million people each year. Some birth dearthers, citing low fertility in affluent nations, express concern about “moral decay” (vi). For example, “smaller and unconventional families” will harm the United States because there will be fewer children and there will not be enough people to care for the elderly (vii). The authors …

Dynamic Range Of Frontoparietal Functional Modulation Is Associated With Working Memory Capacity Limitations In Older Adults, Jonathan G. Hakun, Nathan F. Johnson Nov 2017

Dynamic Range Of Frontoparietal Functional Modulation Is Associated With Working Memory Capacity Limitations In Older Adults, Jonathan G. Hakun, Nathan F. Johnson

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Older adults tend to over-activate regions throughout frontoparietal cortices and exhibit a reduced range of functional modulation during WM task performance compared to younger adults. While recent evidence suggests that reduced functional modulation is associated with poorer task performance, it remains unclear whether reduced range of modulation is indicative of general WM capacity-limitations. In the current study, we examined whether the range of functional modulation observed over multiple levels of WM task difficulty (N-Back) predicts in-scanner task performance and out-of-scanner psychometric estimates of WM capacity. Within our sample (60–77 years of age), age was negatively associated with frontoparietal modulation range. …

Queerness And Dating Violence Among Adolescent Mothers In Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews Nov 2017

Queerness And Dating Violence Among Adolescent Mothers In Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews

Social Work Faculty Publications

Adolescent mothers, queer, and foster youth are all groups at heightened vulnerability for teen dating violence victimization. It is unknown how mothers in residential foster care perceive and experience violence within same-sex relationships. Literature suggests, however, that violence within these contexts may be met by minimization and even denial on behalf of practitioners (e.g., social workers) who may not have a comprehensive understanding of how to best serve queer clients, especially clients who may not be automatically perceived as queer (e.g., adolescent mothers). The present study utilized a mixed qualitative methodological approach to triangulate the perspectives of program staff ( …

Dementia Risk: Is It Nature Or Nurture?, Maria C. Norton, Elizabeth B. Fauth, Jessica Weyerman

All Current Publications

Alzheimer’s is a complex disease for which there is no known method for reversing its effects and no known cure for those who develop it. While a large part of the risk for developing AD comes from genes we inherit, there is evidence suggesting that an even greater part of our risk comes from our “environment,” and more specifically, our lifestyle.

Sexton, Enikő Zsoldos, Nicola Filippini, Ludovica Griffanti, Anderson M. Winkler, Abda Mahmood, Charlotte L. Allan, Anya Topiwala, Simon D. Kyle, Kai Spiegelhalder

School of Medicine Publications

Both sleep disturbances and decline in white matter microstructure are commonly observed in ageing populations, as well as in age-related psychiatric and neurological illnesses. A relationship between sleep and white matter microstructure may underlie such relationships, but few imaging studies have directly examined this hypothesis. In a study of 448 community-dwelling members of the Whitehall II Imaging Sub-Study aged between 60 and 82 years (90 female, mean age 69.2 ± 5.1 years), we used the magnetic resonance imaging technique diffusion tensor imaging to examine the relationship between self-reported sleep quality and white matter microstructure. Poor sleep quality at the time …

Effects Of Media Use On Mental Health Among Adolescents And Emerging Adults Oct 2017

Effects Of Media Use On Mental Health Among Adolescents And Emerging Adults

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Media, such as the use of the internet and watching television, allows for quick communication between people, but overexposure to such media is correlated with social anxiety and clinical depression (Becker, Alzahabi, & Hopwood, 2013; Dalbudak et al., 2013; Dittmar, 1994; McNaughton-Cassill, 2001). Media usage is pervasive in our society, especially among adolescents and college students (Dittmar, 1994; Rideout, Foehr, & Roberts, 2010; Romer, Bagdasarov, & More, 2013). Symptoms of these mental illnesses are correlated with all forms of media, and can be influenced by the content of the media as well (Madan, Mrug, & Wright, 2013). Excess use of …

Effects Of Triceps Surae Fatigue On Gait Local Dynamic Stability In Women As Practitioners And Non-Practitioners Of Strength Training, Georgia Cristina Lehnen, Rina Márcia Magnani, Fábio Barbosa Rodrigues, Gustavo Souza De Sá E Souza, Marcus Fraga Vieira Oct 2017

Effects Of Triceps Surae Fatigue On Gait Local Dynamic Stability In Women As Practitioners And Non-Practitioners Of Strength Training, Georgia Cristina Lehnen, Rina Márcia Magnani, Fábio Barbosa Rodrigues, Gustavo Souza De Sá E Souza, Marcus Fraga Vieira

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study evaluated the effects of plantar flexors fatigue on gait local dynamic stability in young women. Strength-training practitioners (n = 20), and non-practitioner women (n = 21) performed a 4-min treadmill walking before and after a unilateral fatigue protocol of the triceps surae. The major findings of the study demonstrated that localized fatigue did not affect the local dynamic stability, independent of the participant’s training condition. Participants appear to be able to cope with muscle fatigue, adapting to maintain gait performance. Even so, the need for a recovery interval should be considered in order to minimize the risk of …

Relationship Between Muscle Volume And Strength Asymmetry In Elite Athletes: Investigation Of The Quadriceps Femoris And Hamstring Muscles, Robert Bollinger, Dieter Bubeck, Ioannis Sialis, Daniela Kramer, Eric Lehmann, Wilfried Alt Oct 2017

Relationship Between Muscle Volume And Strength Asymmetry In Elite Athletes: Investigation Of The Quadriceps Femoris And Hamstring Muscles, Robert Bollinger, Dieter Bubeck, Ioannis Sialis, Daniela Kramer, Eric Lehmann, Wilfried Alt

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between muscle volume asymmetries and strength asymmetries of the lower extremity. 26 highly trained athletes underwent isometric and isokinetic strength tests at different speeds (60, 180, 0 °/s) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyse quadriceps femoris and hamstring muscle volume. Pearson’s correlation coefficients revealed significant correlations between both the quadriceps volume asymmetries and the maximum knee extension asymmetries (r = .60 to r = .72) as well as the hamstring volume asymmetries and the maximum knee flexion asymmetries (r = .39 to r = .52). It is assumed that …

Muscle-Tendon Adaptation Monitoring In Elite Athletes: Preliminary Results From A Longitudinal Investigation, Gaspar Epro, Matthias König, Christopher Mccrum, Michael Bädorf, Falk Schade, Kiros Karamanidis

ISBS Proceedings Archive

In this study, we analysed the triceps surae (TS) muscle-tendon unit (MTU) mechanical properties (muscle strength and tendon stiffness) in elite jumping event athletes (long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault) and monitored the training-induced alterations in these properties over one year in nine elite jumpers, in order to detect potential changes in the uniformity of adaptation within the TS MTU. The findings indicate to a higher TS muscle strength and Achilles tendon stiffness in the take-off leg in comparison to the swing leg. The longitudinal monitoring revealed a concordant muscle and tendon adaptation in the TS MTU in …

Matching Triceps Surae Muscle Strength And Tendon Stiffness Eliminates Age-Related Differences In Drop-Jump Performance, Matthias König, Svenja Hemmers, Christopher Mccrum, Gaspar Epro, Thijs Ackermans, Ulrich Hartmann, Kiros Karamanidis

ISBS Proceedings Archive

We aimed to determine the influence of triceps surae (TS) muscle strength and Achilles tendon (AT) stiffness on age-related changes in locomotor performance and motor task execution strategy during a drop jump (DJ) task. After matching 12 young and 12 middleaged adults for TS muscle strength and AT stiffness, all subjects performed a series of DJs from different starting heights. Matched young and middle-aged adults showed similar DJ performance but the middle-aged adults showed significantly longer ground contact times, lower values in maximum vertical ground reaction force during the support phase and lower mechanical power, independent of starting height. These …

The Effect Of Prolonged Sitting Versus Use Of A Treadmill Desk On Postural Stability, Laura Charalambous, Rachael Champion, Lindsey Smith, Colm Mcgirl, Daniel Bailey

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Prolonged sitting is resulting in health risks to a growing number of the population. As a potential intervention, treadmill desks make it possible to interrupt prolonged sitting during the office worker’s day. This study aimed to investigate the acute effect of breaking up prolonged sitting with treadmill desk walking on postural stability. Thirteen sedentary adults participated in a randomised two treatment crossover design: 1) sitting for 6.5 hrs versus 2) accumulated 2 hrs of light-intensity treadmill desk walking during the 6.5 hrs. Pre and post condition, participants performed postural stability tests on a pressure plate. Centre of Pressure (CoP) AP …

Influence Of Exercise History On Fall-Induced Hip Fracture Risk, Shinya Abe, Nathaniel Narra, Riku Nikander, Jari Hyttinen, Reijo Kouhia, Harri Sievanen Oct 2017

Influence Of Exercise History On Fall-Induced Hip Fracture Risk, Shinya Abe, Nathaniel Narra, Riku Nikander, Jari Hyttinen, Reijo Kouhia, Harri Sievanen

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Hip fracture is a major public health problem. Thin superolateral cortex of the femoral neck experiences unusually high stress in a sideway fall, contributing to hip fracture risk. The aim of this study is to examine how exercise based loading history, known to affect the femoral neck cortical structure, influences fall-induced fracture risk. For this purpose, finite element models were created from the proximal femur MRI of 91 young athletic and 20 control females. Fall-induced superolateral cortical safety factors (SF) were estimated in the distal volume of femoral neck. Significantly higher (p < 0.05) SFs were observed from femoral necks with high impact (H-I), odd impact (O-I), and repetitive impact (R-I) exercise history, indicating lower fracture risk. The results indicate that it is advisable to include some impact exercise in a fracture preventive exercise program
