College of Public Health: Faculty Syllabi (2014-2021)
This course is intended to familiarize students with promotion of health in an aging population, the notion that aging is a natural part of the lifecycle, community, state and federal health programs and services for the aged. Students will become acquainted with the process of and problems associated with aging in order to effectively manage this important public health issue. Specific health concerns of the elderly including the increase in life expectancy, current life extending research and technology and successful aging will also be examined. Knowledge and understanding of biological, psychological, and sociological aspects of aging as related to health …
Redefining Aging In Hiv Infection Using Phenotypes, David M. Stoff, Karl Goodkin, Dilip Jeste, Maria Marquine
Redefining Aging In Hiv Infection Using Phenotypes, David M. Stoff, Karl Goodkin, Dilip Jeste, Maria Marquine
ETSU Faculty Works
Purpose of review: This article critically reviews the utility of “phenotypes” as behavioral descriptors in aging/HIV research that inform biological underpinnings and treatment development. We adopt a phenotypic redefinition of aging conceptualized within a broader context of HIV infection and of aging. Phenotypes are defined as dimensions of behavior, closely related to fundamental mechanisms, and, thus, may be more informative than chronological age. Primary emphasis in this review is given to comorbid aging and cognitive aging, though other phenotypes (i.e., disability, frailty, accelerated aging, successful aging) are also discussed in relation to comorbid aging and cognitive aging. Recent findings: The …

Living Apart Together, Women, And Family Law, Cynthia Grant Bowman
Living Apart Together, Women, And Family Law, Cynthia Grant Bowman
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
"Living Apart Together, " or "LAT, " describes an intimate relationship in which a committed unmarried couple live in separate residences. This Article discusses whether this lifestyle is particularly attractive to women today. After exploring information available about women and LAT in secondary literature from other parts of the world, the author presents new empirical data about LATs in the United States, based on two surveys and a series of qualitative interviews from 2016 and 2017. She examines whether the women respondents and interviewees offer different reasons for living apart than the men do and discusses whether they choose LAT …

Health & Human Performance Faculty Publications
Objective: To determine whether older Mexican-Americans who cannot speak and/or understand spoken English have higher rates of mobility limitations or fear of falling than their English-speaking counterparts.
Design: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 1169 community-dwelling Mexican-Americans aged 72–96 years from the 2000–2001 wave of the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly. Mobility limitations were defined as having a Short Physical Performance Battery score ≤9, and fear of falling by participant report of being somewhat, fairly, or very afraid of falling. We determined the rates and odds ratios, for having mobility limitations and fear of falling …

Moving From Place-To-Place For End-Of-Life Care: A Mixed-Methods Investigation, Donna M. Wilson, Stephen Birch
Biennial Convention (CONV)
A mixed-method study was undertaken to determine effective and appropriate end-of-life care (EoL) setting transitions. The findings of qualitative and quantitative phases will be presented so as to prevent and address issues over end-of-life care setting transitions or moves in the last year of life.

Collaborative Learning: An Analysis Of Critical Care Nursing Simulation, Kristin Schams, Audrey Elizabeth Snyder, Dean L. Zeller, Krisinda M. Caywood
Biennial Convention (CONV)
The outcomes of a qualitative analysis of collaborative undergraduate and graduate nursing student critical care simulations are presented. The realistic simulations promoted understanding of the importance of communication and felt like a real patient encounter. Students recognized that when caring for a patient, everyone is working toward the same goal.

Child Sexual Abuse And Depression In Late Life For Men: A Population-Based, Longitudinal Analysis, Scott D. Easton, Jooyoung Kong, Matt C. Gregas, Ce Shen, Kevin Shafer
Faculty Publications
Objective: Research investigating long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) on mental health for men is vastly underdeveloped. This study strengthened the knowledge base by examining: (a) long-term trajectories of depressive symptoms for men with and without a history of CSA, and (b) moderating effects of social support over time.
Method: We analyzed multiple waves of data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study. The sample (N = 2,451) consisted of men with histories of CSA and a stratified, randomly sampled comparison group. Growth curve modeling was employed for analyses.
Results: After controlling for demographic, parental, and health factors, men with …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Advancing age is the top risk factor for the development of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the contribution of aging processes to AD etiology remains unclear. Emerging evidence shows that reduced brain metabolic and vascular functions occur decades before the onset of cognitive impairments, and these reductions are highly associated with low-grade, chronic inflammation developed in the brain over time. Interestingly, recent findings suggest that the gut microbiota may also play a critical role in modulating immune responses in the brain via the brain-gut axis. In this study, our goal was to identify associations between deleterious changes in …

Big Brains Stabilize Populations And Facilitate Colonization Of Variable Habitats In Birds, Trevor S. Fristoe, Andrew N. Iwaniuk, Carlos A. Botero
Biology Faculty Research
The cognitive buffer hypothesis posits that environmental variability can be a major driver of the evolution of cognition because an enhanced ability to produce flexible behavioural responses facilitates coping with the unexpected. Although comparative evidence supports different aspects of this hypothesis, a direct connection between cognition and the ability to survive a variable and unpredictable environment has yet to be demonstrated. Here, we use complementary demographic and evolutionary analyses to show that among birds, the mechanistic premise of this hypothesis is well supported but the implied direction of causality is not. Specifically, we show that although population dynamics are more …

Socioemotional Selectivity And Mental Health Among Trauma Survivors In Old Age, Derek M. Isaacowitz, Timothy B. Smith, Laura L. Carstensen
Faculty Publications
Empirical tests of socioemotional selectivity theory support the contention that the developmental trend in adulthood to focus increasingly on fewer, but emotionally significant, social partners is associated positively with psychological well-being. Tenets of the theory, however, also suggest conditions in which selectivity could instead lead to an increase in negative emotional experiences. In particular, if the socioemotional world of the individual includes emotional distress, selective focus on emotions and close relationships may detract from rather than enhance well-being. In the current study, we examined selectivity and associated well-being in Holocaust survivors, Japanese-American internment camp survivors, and comparably-aged people who lived …
