A Study Of Acculturation In Chinese-Mongolian Er’Rentai Folk Opera, Luyin Shao

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Er’rentai, or Mongolian dance and song duets, is a genre of folk opera in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. Er’rentai performances can be categorized into two styles—the “western-style” and the “eastern-style.” The aim of this thesis is to explore the acculturation in Chinese-Mongolian er’rentai genre in the following ways. First, I address the historical background of the western-style er’rentai. Then, I draw on fieldwork with Huo Banzhu, a famous er’rentai musician, to introduce contemporary state of er’rentai's development. Finally, I employ musical analysis to demonstrate the borrowings of Mongolian music and culture in the formation and transmission …

The Search For Consistent Intonation: An Exploration And Guide For Violoncellists, Daniel Hoppe Jan 2017

The Search For Consistent Intonation: An Exploration And Guide For Violoncellists, Daniel Hoppe

Theses and Dissertations--Music

This paper provides a system that helps diagnose and address the specific challenge to cellists of intonation in any passage. Learning to play consistently in tune is essential for every cellist. In the over three hundred years of cello history, teachers have tried approaching the topic from a variety of perspectives. While each technique is useful in its own right, there is scant attention to how they work together. Viewing intonation through its component sub-skills is the first step toward integrating existing exercises and paving the way for further advances in pedagogy. The following paper categorizes training techniques according to …

The Birth Of American Empire: Spain, The Philippines, And The Debates Over Expansion, Clayton A. Richards Jan 2017

The Birth Of American Empire: Spain, The Philippines, And The Debates Over Expansion, Clayton A. Richards

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The whirlwind of activity that occurred in American foreign policy at the end of the nineteenth century is largely forgotten about. Situated between the Civil War and the First World War, this era is often overlooked in terms of importance to American history. It was, however, a major formative time in the history of the United States. During these years, the United States committed to actions outside of its borders that would have major ramifications on the future course of the country. These events were the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War, both fought in the period from 1898 to …

Why A State-Level Carbon Tax Can Include Border Adjustments, David Gamage, Darien Shanske Jan 2017

Why A State-Level Carbon Tax Can Include Border Adjustments, David Gamage, Darien Shanske

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This is our third in a series of articles considering taxation and greenhouse gas mitigation. To date, all state-level attempts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by placing a price on carbon have involved cap-and-trade regimes. In our previous two articles, we considered how importing tax features into a cap and- trade regime could ease distributive concerns and also make cap-and-trade regimes more efficient.

Law Schools Harm Genízaros And Other Indigenous People By Misunderstanding Aba Policy, Bill Piatt, Moises Gonzales, Katja Wolf Jan 2017

Law Schools Harm Genízaros And Other Indigenous People By Misunderstanding Aba Policy, Bill Piatt, Moises Gonzales, Katja Wolf

New Mexico Law Review

Law schools justifiably seek to enroll a diverse student body in order to enrich the academic experience and environment, and to provide attorneys who will serve all segments of our society. American law schools enjoy the constitutional right to maintain such diversity. Indeed, accreditation standards promulgated by the American Bar Association (“ABA”) require it. The Association of American Law Schools carries a similar mandate. In seeking to create a diverse student body, law schools offer applicants the opportunity to identify their backgrounds. There generally is no “diversity police” checking on the accuracy of the self-identification as a member of a …

Making Meaning Of Student Activism: Student Activist And Administrator Perspectives, Laura M. Harrison, Peter C. Mather Jan 2017

Making Meaning Of Student Activism: Student Activist And Administrator Perspectives, Laura M. Harrison, Peter C. Mather

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

College campuses have experienced a recent resurgence of student activism, particularly in response to some of President Donald Trump’s executive orders as well as controversial speakers like Ann Coulter and Milo Yiannopoulous. Student activism presents both challenges and opportunities for higher education leaders seeking to engage productively in these often complex and highly charged issues. We conducted a phenomenological study of ten student activists and eight administrators at three universities to examine the meaning and goals they identify in their experience of campus activism. Findings indicated students identify their activist involvement as highly meaningful, especially with regard to what they …

Bibliographic Essay: The History Of Human-Animal Relations, J. Wendel Cox

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Animals are everywhere. Whether as pets, pests, sources of food, fuel, or materials for manufacture, means of traction or source of motive power, or objects of veneration and fear and wonder, animals have been our counterparts throughout human history. In recent years, a historical literature has developed about animals and our relationships with them, part of a larger “animal turn” in the humanities. Scholars and students alike are often surprised, enchanted, and intrigued by historical perspectives on what heretofore has struck us as natural and timeless circumstances. This essay describes a small selection of a challenging, accessible, and provocative scholarship …

It illustrates to the reader how from Henry Tudor's childhood, through his early reign up until the Battle of Stoke, how integral his Welsh connections through his father's family were to his success. It draws from extensive primary sources to illustrate the point and presents a clear presentation of the extreme extent to which these connections impacted Henry Tudor's both his acquisition and his ability to maintain the throne of …

Education In Haiti And The Caribbean: A Literature Review, Rebekah Rose Jan 2017

Education In Haiti And The Caribbean: A Literature Review, Rebekah Rose

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

How we educate our youth is something that is constantly changed and altered in order to achieve greatness. Throughout the Caribbean there are countries with significantly lower educational "greatness", leading to significantly high poverty and illiteracy rates. This literature review seeks to compare and contrast three countries in the Caribbean -- Haiti, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic -- and analyze how they educate their youth both with and without disabilities. It is found that Haiti is both the poorest, and has the least educated population. Haiti also has the fewest number of government funded and regulated schools (Dupoux, Wolman, & …

On Trial: The Branch Davidians Of Waco Texas 1987-1993, Andrew Michael Pedrotti

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the integration of the Branch Davidians into the Waco, Texas community during the years immediately preceding the BATF siege of 1993. An examination of media and biographical sources indicates that the Branch Davidians were better integrated in the community than is commonly suggested. Survivor accounts describe the Branch Davidians working and relaxing in Waco, rather than hiding in their compound. A survey of local newspaper coverage reveals that the press in Waco had a positive view of Koresh and the Branch Davidians in the late 1980s. In particular, coverage of a 1988 trial involving David Koresh and …

Australian Strategic Culture: A Case Study, Eric Begue Jan 2017

Australian Strategic Culture: A Case Study, Eric Begue

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This examines the relationship between a country’s history and its actions on the international stage through the prism of the "strategic culture" theoretical framework created in works by Alistair Ian Johnston, Elizabeth Keir, Jack Snyder, and others. The central question of the study will be whether or not an understanding of a state’s past actions, rhetoric, and/or cultural obligations can provide an accurate predictor of future action and the primary thesis is that national “strategic culture” has a causal effect on national policy decisions. Towards this end, I have chosen to conduct a case study to ascertain the impact and …

Beyond The One-Shot: Intensive Workshops As A Platform For Engaging The Library In Digital Humanities., Nicole Kong, Susan Powell

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This article explores how librarian participation as instructors in week-long intensive classes—a common workshop format in Digital Humanities (DH)—can advance a variety of library objectives, while also uniquely supporting the DH community. Intensive workshops fall between the one-shot session and credit course formats more commonly found in library instruction. Drawing on case studies from Geographic Information Systems (GIS) instruction at DH institutes at the University of California Berkeley and Purdue University, the authors explore the origins of librarian involvement, course topics, pedagogy, and library services. Based on their instruction experiences in the DH summer institutes and student surveys, the authors …

The citations generated from these articles were tracked within and between this set of journals from 2009 through 2015. Our searches found 1,067 citations, or an average of 1.5 citations per article. After excluding self-citations, the remaining citations (33.6 percent) filtered out into other geography education journals and were classified into three groups: splash, wave, and ripple. Although the Journal of Geography in Higher Education generated the largest in-degree count, it shared the lead with the International Research in Geographical …

The focus on the lack of diversity in technology has become a hot topic over the last several years, with technology companies coming under fire for not being more representative of the markets that they serve. Even The White House and President Obama has made this issue of technology diversity and recruiting more women and people of color a topic of discussion hosting several events at The White House aimed at finding solutions to this issue. The issue has become so prevalent in the news recently that technology companies have been asked to publish report cards disclosing the demographic breakdown …

Water Use And Environmental Parameters Influence Proso Millet Yield, David C. Nielsen, Merle F. Vigil Jan 2017

Water Use And Environmental Parameters Influence Proso Millet Yield, David C. Nielsen, Merle F. Vigil

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) is a short-season, drought-tolerant C4 species capable of making use of limited available water supplies and is suitable for dryland crop rotations in the Central Great Plains. Previously published water use/yield production functions for proso millet have slopes lower than reported for other C4 species in this region. The objectives of this experiment were to determine the water-limited yield relationship for proso millet and to identify environmental factors that cause yields to be lower than predicted by the water limited yield relationship. Water use and yield data were obtained from a long-term crop rotation …

Sublethal Exposure, Insecticide Resistance, And Community Stress, Raul Narciso C. Guedes, Spencer S. Walse, James E. Throne Jan 2017

Sublethal Exposure, Insecticide Resistance, And Community Stress, Raul Narciso C. Guedes, Spencer S. Walse, James E. Throne

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Insecticides are an invaluable pest management tool and anthropogenic stressors of widespread environmental occurrence that are subject to biased perceptions based on the targeted application, market value of use, and regulatory requirements. As a result, short-term and simplistic efforts focusing on lethal effects toward individual species and populations prevail. Holistic and comprehensive studies exploring rather common sublethal insecticide exposures are rare, particularly considering their potential role in structuring populations and communities in diverse environmental settings and potentially interfering in a range of ecological interactions. Studies on insecticide resistance, for example, do not go beyond population-based studies, disregarding temporal and spatial …
