Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
We know economic and social policy has implications for ecosystems at large, but the consequences for a given geographic area or specific wildlife population are more difficult to conceptualize and communicate. Species distribution models, which extrapolate species-habitat relationships across ecological scales, are capable of predicting population changes in distribution and abundance in response to management and policy, and thus, are an ideal means for facilitating proactive management within a larger policy framework. To illustrate the capabilities of species distribution modeling in scenario planning for wildlife populations, we projected an existing distribution model for ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) onto …

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
The North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) has established a model for wildlife conservation planning over the last 3 decades. Management at a continental scale, leveraged funding, regional partnerships, and a strong science basis have been notable features. Periodic updates to the NAWMP occurred since implementation in 1986; however, a fundamental revision was accomplished in 2012 after extensive stakeholder engagement. An explicit fundamental goal for waterfowl conservation supporters was added in 2012, complementing existing goals for sustainable populations and sufficient habitat found in previous updates. We present a synopsis of progress toward implementation of the 2012 NAWMP and challenge the …
Detection And Attribution Methodologies Overview (Appendix C), Thomas Knutson
Detection And Attribution Methodologies Overview (Appendix C), Thomas Knutson
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
In this appendix, we present a brief overview of the methodologies and methodological issues for detection and attribution of climate change. Attributing an observed change or an event partly to a causal factor (such as anthropogenic climate forcing) normally requires that the change first be detectable (Hegerl et al. 2010). A detectable observed change is one which is determined to be highly unlikely to occur (less than about a 10% chance) due to internal variability alone, without necessarily being ascribed to a causal factor. An attributable change refers to a change in which the relative contribution of causal factors has …

This self-assessment tool was developed for those who wish to embark on state-wide governmental systems change to improve high school transition and employment outcomes for youth and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Its purpose is to aid in the development of a work plan that is based on a review of the state policies, practices, and strategies that impact transition from school and opportunities for competitive integrated employment of youth and young adults with IDD.
This tool incorporates research identifying elements of state government that support high rates of participation in integrated employment (Hall et al., 2007), …
Object Of Your Rejection: The Symbolic Annihilation And Recuperation Of Queer Identities In Country Music, Lauren Veline
Object Of Your Rejection: The Symbolic Annihilation And Recuperation Of Queer Identities In Country Music, Lauren Veline
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses the double-marginalization of white queers living in Bible Belt communities by examining the symbolic annihilation of queer identities in country music. Bible Belt queers face unique obstacles and have different needs than queer communities elsewhere due to the cultural context of their communities. The urban-centric (“metronormative”) standards of queer identity and visibility presented in the media do not translate to their lived experiences. Moreover, while white, non-urban southerners possess a source of popular-media expression through country music, queer identities are noticeably absent. The invisibility of Bible Belt queers in the media perpetuates a cycle of hostility and …
Risk, Reward, And The Role Of Habitat Selection On Community Dynamics In Temporary Ponds, Matthew Robert Pintar
Risk, Reward, And The Role Of Habitat Selection On Community Dynamics In Temporary Ponds, Matthew Robert Pintar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The processes that generate patterns of species diversity within and among habitat patches are a fundamental topic of interest in ecology. Traditionally, there was a focus on post-colonization effects such as predation, however, pre-colonization processes, such as habitat selection, are equally important determinants of community structure. In freshwater systems, the lethal effects of dominant predators (particularly fish) are well established, while the transition from permanent to temporary ponds is a defining characteristic. This transition produces distinct communities characterized by organisms with complex life cycles and plastic developmental strategies. This means that many organisms occupying habitat patches arrive there by the …
Black Space On A White Campus; Exploring The Relationship Between African American Students And The Physical Structure Of The University Of Mississippi, Drew Ford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
At the University of Mississippi, despite institutional efforts to distance the present from the past, issues of race continue to influence the campus and the experiences of African-American students. This thesis examines the relationship between the physical structure of the university of Mississippi campus and African American students, and investigates the creation of "counter-publics." this thesis analyzes works in critical race theory, higher education, and social geography to argue that the "whiteness" of the university of Mississippi campus creates social and educational barriers for African American students. Furthermore, along with being surrounded by "whiteness," African American students lack any physical …
Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Structure Of The Administrative State: The Case Of Financial Services Regulation, Richard L. Revesz
Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Structure Of The Administrative State: The Case Of Financial Services Regulation, Richard L. Revesz
Faculty Articles
The viability and desirability of conducting cost-benefit analysis of financial regulation is a subject of intense academic debate. Opponents claim that such analysis is feasible for environmental regulation but not for financial regulation because of the difference in the benefits that require monetization in the respective areas. This Article argues that the recent debate misses an important part of the problem. In large part, cost-benefit analysis of financial regulation cannot currently be performed successfully because of institutional shortcomings, not analytical difficulties. Compared to Executive Branch agencies, independent agencies, like the major financial regulatory agencies, lack the capacity to do cost-benefit …
Barry Feld: An Intellectual History Of A Juvenile Court Reformer, Martin Guggenheim
Barry Feld: An Intellectual History Of A Juvenile Court Reformer, Martin Guggenheim
Faculty Articles
The article of Professor Barry Feld’s that provides the foundation for this special issue of the Nevada Law Journal—My Life in Crime: An Intellectual History of the Juvenile Court—chronicles the transformation of the juvenile justice system over the course of the past five decades. Feld is certainly the right person to tell this story. He is perhaps the leading scholar in juvenile justice of his generation. And, probably more than any other scholar, his scholarship has had a direct impact on juvenile court practice. He has been a prosecutor, law professor, researcher, commission member, and scholar. He was among the …
Mcdonald’S And Its Menu – What Are The Implications?, Jennifer Lemanski, Louis K. Falk, David Hinojosa
Mcdonald’S And Its Menu – What Are The Implications?, Jennifer Lemanski, Louis K. Falk, David Hinojosa
Communication Faculty Publications
McDonald’s is a global leader in the fast food industry with over 36,000 restaurants located in more than 100 countries. Throughout the U.S. McDonald’s is famous for consistency. A consumer can go into any McDonald’s in the U.S. and the French Fries are not only prepared the same, but they will also taste the same. Most other menu items in U.S. have the same uniformity. As McDonald’s expands to other countries this consistency feature starts to waver. McDonald’s locations outside of the U.S. have altered their menus to reflect regional tastes. These menu variations are a result of: religious tenets, …

Exploring Opportunities For Urban Youth Inclusion In The Creative Economy In Boston’S Dudley Square, Susan Crandall, Marija Bingulac, Bianca Ortiz-Wythe, Andrew Seeder
Center for Social Policy Publications
Communities throughout the U.S. need to attract and retain businesses and talent to grow and to thrive. One approach to economic development which has gained traction in recent years is the concept of a “creative economy,” which suggests that investing in creative occupations and industries is integral to support economic and culturally vibrant cities.
Although the implementation of creative economy initiatives has successfully boosted economic development in some cities and regions, critics have argued that a focus on the creative economy is fueling urban inequality, focusing primarily on college-educated professionals and ignoring the needs of blue collar and service workers. …

The Road To The Cliff Edge: Understanding Financial Gaps In Public Assistance Programs Available To Massachusetts Families, Marija Bingulac, Caitlin A. Carey, Susan Crandall
Center for Social Policy Publications
To better understand the interaction between public supports and earned income and its impact on overall economic well-being, we conducted research on public support program eligibility criteria, regulations, and administration. We use the concept of “financial gaps” to outline specific problems created by the complex system of public supports built around an inadequate assessment of households’ ability to meet basic needs. The typology we provide is intended to be a tool for advocates, service providers, researchers, and policy makers that will help them hone in on the precise problem and develop appropriate policy interventions.
Mind, Body, & Spirit : An Ecological Community-Based Approach To Healthy Aging, Emily Widra
Mind, Body, & Spirit : An Ecological Community-Based Approach To Healthy Aging, Emily Widra
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Based on the biopsychosocial approach of the ecological theory of aging, the present study examined the health status and social engagement of participants in an osteoporosis-prevention exercise class for adults over the age of 65 in two counties in Western Massachusetts. A self-rated health survey was developed and administered in each of the Healthy Bones & Balance classes with 226 responses in total.
Participants in this study had higher self-rated health scores than have been found in a national epidemiological study. In particular, participants who live alone were engaging in more social activities – at senior centers and places of …
How Hybrids Manage Growth And Social-Business Tensions In Global Supply Chains: The Case Of Impact Sourcing, Chacko G. Kannothra, Stephan Manning, Nardia Haigh
How Hybrids Manage Growth And Social-Business Tensions In Global Supply Chains: The Case Of Impact Sourcing, Chacko G. Kannothra, Stephan Manning, Nardia Haigh
Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series
This study contributes to the growing interest in how hybrid organizations manage paradoxical social—business tensions. Our empirical case is ‘impact sourcing’ – hybrids in global supply chains that hire staff from disadvantaged communities to provide services to business clients. We identify two major growth orientations - ‘community-focused’ and ‘client-focused’ growth - their inherent tensions and ways that hybrids manage them. The former favors slow growth and manages tensions through highly-integrated client and community relations; the latter promotes faster growth and manages client and community relations separately. Both growth orientations address social-business tensions in particular ways, but also create latent constraints …

Historical Refuges And Recolonization Routes In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Inferred Through Phylogeographic Analysis Of The Spotted Wintergreen (Chimaphila Maculata), John Daniel Banusiewicz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Phylogeography has recently benefited from incorporation of coalescent modeling to test competing scenarios of population history of a species. Ecological niche modeling has also been useful in inferring areas of likely suitable habitat during past climate conditions. Several studies have examined the population history of biota in the Southern Appalachian Mountains and how they responded to climate change associated with the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (~18,000 years ago), though few studies have focused on understory plants. This study redressed that knowledge gap thorough examination of the phylogeographic history of the understory plant Chimaphila maculata, which is native to …
Parent-Fostered Enrichment Activities And Academic Outcomes In Middle Childhood, Princess-Melissa T. Washington-Nortey
Parent-Fostered Enrichment Activities And Academic Outcomes In Middle Childhood, Princess-Melissa T. Washington-Nortey
Theses and Dissertations
Despite numerous educational reforms, elementary school children in the United States continue to lag behind their peers from other developed countries on reading, math and science outcomes. Many interventions focus on strategies aimed at increasing the amount of classroom work children undertake. However, the key to improving outcomes may lie in out of school enrichment activities that facilitate learning. Drawing from Eccles Expectancy-Value theory(Simpkins, Fredricks, & Eccles, 2012), the current study focuses on assessing the impact of parent-fostered enrichment activities on child academic outcomes in the first three years of elementary school. Using secondary data from Early Childhood Longitudinal Study …
Urban Accessibility Measurement And Visualization — A Big Data Approach, Yuqin Jiang
Urban Accessibility Measurement And Visualization — A Big Data Approach, Yuqin Jiang
Theses and Dissertations
Accessibility measurement has always been an important question in different areas including transportation, urban planning, politics, and sociology. However, how to measure transportation accessibility in different areas have been limited to data availability and technology. Recently, with increasing availability in public transportation data, we found a gap between current methods and large volume of data now available. This thesis developed a new method to measure multi-mode transportation data, including taxi, bus, and subway. Based on this measurement, we can visualize and understand the spatiotemporal patterns of accessibility in New York City (NYC). With historical travel records and public transit schedule, …
Odor And Power In The Americas: Olfactory Consciousness From Columbus To Emancipation, Andrew Kettler
Odor And Power In The Americas: Olfactory Consciousness From Columbus To Emancipation, Andrew Kettler
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes discourses concerning odor within the Atlantic World from approximately 1492 until 1838. Numerous historians and philosophers have described how the Reformation’s emphasis on texts and an increased concentration on visual science during the Enlightenment influenced Western Europeans to heighten the importance of the eye to the detriment of the lower sense of smell. This dissertation begins by thinking about materialist contours of this olfactory decline through a linguistic analysis of sulfur within seventeenth century England. It then proceeds to examine how in the early Americas such a repudiation of the sense of smell did not occur. The …

From Rice Fields To Duck Marshes: Sport Hunters And Environmental Change On The South Carolina Coast, 1890–1950, Matthew Allen Lockhart
Theses and Dissertations
In part because some historians are ethically opposed to their avocation, sport hunters of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era are an understudied group. As environmental actors, they have been virtually ignored. Based on the biological traits of their quarry, one particular subset of sportsmen, waterfowl hunters, were especially disposed to manipulating the environment in which they hunted. Their efforts to attract migratory waterfowl to privately owned wetlands through habitat management, which started nearly a half-century before federal engineers and biologists undertook similar work on the national wildlife refuges in the 1930s, were pioneering. By the midpoint of the twentieth …

Well Enough Alone: Stories, Sarah Jane Huskey
Theses and Dissertations
This collection of short stories aims to capture the difficulties of telling anything at all, let alone the truth, the whole story, or the abstract reality. Though its thematic concerns might seem a bit cheerless at first blush, Well Enough Alone aims to treat them as prominent features of day-to-day life rather than gloomy afflictions or the loci of trauma.
Exploring Spatial Patterning And The Impact Of Obesogenic Built Environments For Youth Obesity, S. Morgan Hughey
Exploring Spatial Patterning And The Impact Of Obesogenic Built Environments For Youth Obesity, S. Morgan Hughey
Theses and Dissertations
Youth obesity is a major public health concern due to an array of physical, social, and psychological health consequences. Residential location, often referred to as ‘place’, has continued to emerge as a key health determinant with studies showing that where a child lives impacts their health. Environments where it is easy for individuals to have low levels of physical activity – either by discouraging active behavior or promoting sedentary behavior – and easy for individuals to consume unhealthful foods – either by the limited availability of healthful foods or increased availability of unhealthy foods – have been coined ‘obesogenic’. Additional …

The German Hansa And King Richard Ii Of England: A Nuanced And Evolving Relationship During The Latter 14th Century, Charles-Nicholas M. Beard
Honors Theses and Capstones
This study intends to investigate this important international relationship between medieval England and the merchants of the German Hansa, and to provide a survey of the administrative and diplomatic realities. Specifically, these chapters will focus on, and attempt to contribute to, the historiographical debate surrounding these two medieval economic superpowers during the reign of King Richard II in the late 14th century by enhancing the existing with an in-depth study of the changing factors motivating English diplomacy. As a result of this effort, this thesis will be able to more specifically triangulate England’s early efforts to gain a position …
