The Next Big Thing In Lds Apologetics: Strong Semitic And Egyptian Elements In Uto-Aztecan Languages, Jeff Lindsay

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Following several articles and presentations over the past two decades on tantalizing finds linking Uto-Aztecan languages with Near Eastern languages, LDS linguist Brian Stubbs has recently published two significant works offering extensive details and documentation. The more comprehensive volume intended for scholars and serious students of language is Exploring the Explanatory Power of Semitic and Egyptian in Uto-Aztecan, a highly technical work providing 1,528 sets of cognates with intricate details linking Uto-Aztecan languages with two versions of Semitic and with Egyptian. This is followed by an analysis of puzzles in Uto-Aztecan explained by Egyptian and Semitic ties as well as …

Nasopharyngeal Microbiome Diversity Changes Over Time In Children With Asthma, Marcos Pérez-Losada, Lamia Alamri, Keith Crandall, Robert J. Freishtat

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Background

The nasopharynx is a reservoir for pathogens associated with respiratory illnesses such as asthma. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has been used to characterize the nasopharyngeal microbiome of infants and adults during health and disease; less is known, however, about the composition and temporal dynamics (i.e., longitudinal variation) of microbiotas from children and adolescents. Here we use NGS technology to characterize the nasopharyngeal microbiomes of asthmatic children and adolescents (6 to 18 years) and determine their stability over time.

Methods

Two nasopharyngeal washes collected 5.5 to 6.5 months apart were taken from 40 children and adolescents with asthma living in the …

The Transigent Circle: Exploring Psychospiritual Group Work As An Avenue To Spiritual Wellness And Enculturation Within College Communities, Oliver Robert Goldsmith

Theses & ETDs

The current study investigated the use of the spiritual circle as the basis for a college-community-based spiritual wellness program, specifically by examining the influence participation in a semester-length circle-based academic tutorial had on members’ spiritual well-being, quality of life, sense of community, and anxiety. Members of this tutorial (SW group) completed baseline (N=15) and follow-up (N=10) survey questionnaires containing these four psychological scales. For the purposes of comparison, two control groups consisting of members of a different academic tutorial (NVC group; follow-up N=7) and students not enrolled in either tutorial (control group; baseline N=43, follow-up N=67) who responded to the …

A New Mythology: Irish Themes And Motifs In Modern Young Adult Literature, Alyssa A. Motylinski

Theses & ETDs

This thesis, titled A New Mythology: Irish Themes and Motifs in Modern Young Adult Literature, explores pervasive elements and themes in Irish mythology, and examines how the Irish oral tradition evolved over time. In addition, this thesis traces common themes in Irish folklore and mythology from their roots in the oral tradition and connects them to tropes which have become pervasive in modern, popular Young Adult literature. In addition to drawing on my love of stories and fantasy, I also tap into the work and study I did during a semester in Cork, Ireland. I cite lectures I attended at …

Agenda Setting In Cities: Relative Actor Efficacy Across City Government Form, Kohl Malo Jan 2017

Agenda Setting In Cities: Relative Actor Efficacy Across City Government Form, Kohl Malo

Theses & ETDs

Given the close institutional proximity of city government, it is surprising how little is known about how city government form affects politics and governance. This thesis develops a theoretical model for agenda setting in mayor-council and manager-commission forms of government by considering how institutionally defined actors work in context to realize their policies. An unusual feature of this theory is its insistence on the special ability of a ceremonial mayor or council chair to “agenda set.” Field interviews are conducted with mayors, city managers, commissioners, and councilpersons to inform this discussion. A second analysis links campaign platforms to adopted ordinances. …

Soundscapes And Storyworlds: Video Game Immersion Through Sound, Annie Norton Jan 2017

Soundscapes And Storyworlds: Video Game Immersion Through Sound, Annie Norton

Theses & ETDs

The aim of this thesis project is to study, analyze, and synthesize three subjects close to my heart: music, video games, and storyworld immersion. Video game soundtracks are the ideal union of these elements, based on the traditions of all three. The paper begins by drawing comparisons to film soundtracks, noting certain games with strong resemblances to cinema, followed by a discussion on the ways in which the two mediums differ. Special attention is given to topics like implementation and player feedback, since these are areas that differ from cinema the most, and the game series Dead Space is used …

Languages Cross Borders: The Inclusion/Intrusion Of English In French And Spanish Writing From North America, Fiona Maclean

Theses & ETDs

This thesis considers how languages cross borders and how French and Spanish works from across North America include English in their texts. I analyze works by Ringuet, France Daigle, Gloria E. Anzaldúa, and Giannina Braschi, focusing on how they include English into their French (Ringuet and Daigle) and Spanish (Anzaldúa and Braschi). Written between 1938 and 2002, these texts deal with the challenges faced by non-English-speakers living on a continent (North America) with a legacy that preferences and privileges its English speaking population. In the French texts, the constant intrusion of English used both by English-speaking Canadians and Americans, is …

Masculinity On The Margins: Redefining American Manhood In New Orleans And Southern Louisiana, Marley Disalvo Jan 2017

Masculinity On The Margins: Redefining American Manhood In New Orleans And Southern Louisiana, Marley Disalvo

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines literary and filmic representations of Louisiana in an effort to explore the implications of the position that Louisiana occupies the national American imagination, as well as how masculine identities are constructed in relation to Louisiana’s cultural and physical environment. In order to understand how Louisiana is represented across literature and popular culture in recent history, I analyze three novels, a film, and a television show, all of which were created between the 1960s and the present. Chapter One explores black masculinity and methods of resistance in the context of rural Jim Crow Louisiana in Ernest Gaines’s A …

10 Square Miles Of Food Justice: How Ithaca, New York Is Breaking Bread To Bridge Communities, Julia De Aragon

Theses & ETDs

Through personal interviews and analysis, this thesis examines the impact of community involvement and anti-oppression collaboration on the food justice movement in Ithaca, New York. It analyses published work on race and power dynamics, and the role communities play in environmental justice. This thesis concludes that while a certain degree of social inequality and disparity exists within the Ithaca food movement, it can be resisted through intentional engagement of disenfranchised communities by locally organized grassroots initiatives and programs, and increased collaboration between these initiatives and programs.

Medical-Legal Partnerships With Communities: Legal Empowerment To Transform Care, Tamar Ezer Jan 2017

Medical-Legal Partnerships With Communities: Legal Empowerment To Transform Care, Tamar Ezer

Articles

Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) integrate legal services into health care settings to provide holistic care and address the social determinants of health. This article brings a legal-empowerment lens to MLP work, arguing for a stronger focus on communities. It examines the application to MLPs of bringing services to communities, investing in rights literacy, and partnering with community-based paralegals. It then outlines the potential for a transformation in health and legal services to a rights - rather than needs-based framework where communities are active partners in program design and development.

Terror And Territory: A Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Isil, Robert Riley Strider Jan 2017

Terror And Territory: A Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Isil, Robert Riley Strider

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), alternatively the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), is one of many non-state organizations that resulted from the extensive foreign intervention in the Middle East leading up to current conflicts there. Like the wider network that it used to be part of, ISIL is considered to be a great threat to modern first world countries. Using data from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), this paper analyzed the relationship between the amount of territory ISIL held from June 2014 to December 2015 and the attacks it carried out in that time, …

Multilingual Students' Perceptions Of And Experiences With Instructor Feedback Methods In A U.S. First-Year Composition Class, Hong Thi Tuyet Vo

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

While instructor feedback has generally been recognized as an essential factor in enhancing writing proficiency for multilingual writers, little known research has focused on students’ perceptions of and their experiences with different modes of instructor feedback. In addition, impacts of various feedback methods on students’ writing have remained debatable. This case study seeks to gain an in-depth understanding of the meaning and significance of three instructor feedback methods, namely written, oral, and audio-visual feedback, from students’ perspectives. Furthermore, it offers additional insights into the impacts of these three instructor feedback methods on students’ writing. To be more precise, this study …

Engineering Applications of GIS - Laboratory Exercises

Autonomous vehicles are currently the newest and hottest technology and show tremendous potential in making current transportation much more efficient. GIS is a key element in providing different mapping solutions and satellite assistance to support the cars in addition to their LIDAR and camera systems. Over the last few decades, different technologies have been integrated into cars to make them more user friendly--more autonomous. Recently, cars have been given a standardized range to categorize them into different levels of autonomy. The levels range from 0 to 5. Level 0 has no capacity of any autonomous technology; level 1 has cruise …

Laboratory Exercise – Calculating Runoff Over Land Parcels, Wade Bozeman, Steven Evans, Ryan Selee Jan 2017

Laboratory Exercise – Calculating Runoff Over Land Parcels, Wade Bozeman, Steven Evans, Ryan Selee

Engineering Applications of GIS - Laboratory Exercises

When developing land, most municipalities will require that all runoff from the site be retained on site or flow into a storm water conveyance system. In the near future, new regulation will require that all runoff be retained on site. For this reason, it is important to know how much runoff can be expected to flow over a potential development site. In this lab, you will use ArcMap ModelBuilder to predict the amount of flow which can be expected over a land parcel in a storm event.

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The museum invited fifteen individuals from the university community—faculty, students, staff, administrators—to each choose a photograph from Sheldon’s permanent collection and write a brief reflection on or response to the work. The selected images span history, genres, and styles, just as the participants represent diverse intellectual and creative interests on campus. Equally varied are the reflections themselves. Some participants describe qualities that have drawn them to particular images; others consider the ways art provides a fresh lens for their specialized work in other disciplines.

Repealing Federal Health Reform: Economic And Employment Consequences For States, Leighton C. Ku, Erika Steinmetz, Erin Brantley, Brian K. Bruen

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

Issue: The incoming Trump administration and Republicans in Congress are seeking to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), likely beginning with the law’s insurance premium tax credits and expansion of Medicaid eligibility. Research shows that the loss of these two provisions would lead to a doubling of the number of uninsured, higher uncompensated care costs for providers, and higher taxes for low-income Americans.

Goal: To determine the state-by-state effect of repeal on employment and economic activity.

Methods: A multistate economic forecasting model (PI+ from Regional Economic Models, Inc.) was used to quantify for each state the effects of the federal …
