Women are underrepresented in a number of science, technology, engineering, and mathe- matics (STEM) disciplines. Limited diversity in the development of the STEM workforce has negative implications for scientific innovation, creativity, and social relevance. The current study reports the first-year results of the PROmoting Geoscience Research, Education, and SuccesS (PROGRESS) program, a novel theory-driven informal mentoring program aimed at supporting first- and second-year female STEM majors. Using a prospective, longitudinal, multi-site (i.e., 7 universities in Colorado/Wyoming Front Range & Carolinas), propensity score matched design, we compare mentoring and persistence outcomes for women in and out of PROGRESS (N = 116). …

Background: Successful recruitment of participants to mobile health (mHealth) studies presents unique challenges over in-person studies. It is important to identify recruitment strategies that maximize the limited recruitment resources available to researchers.
Objective: The objective of this study was to describe a case study of a unique recruitment process used in a recent mHealth software app designed to increase smoking cessation among weight-concerned women smokers. The See Me Smoke-Free app was deployed to the Google Play Store (Alphabet, Inc., Google, LLC), where potential participants could download the app and enroll in the study. Users were invited in-app to participate in …

Domestic dogs and cats are potentially effective sentinel populations for monitoring occurrence and spread of Lyme disease. Few studies have evaluated the public health utility of sentinel programmes using geo-analytic approaches. Confirmed Lyme disease cases diagnosed by physicians and ticks submitted by veterinarians to the West Virginia State Health Department were obtained for 2014-2016. Ticks were identified to species, and only Ixodes scapularis were incorporated in the analysis. Separate ordinary least squares (OLS) and spatial lag regression models were conducted to estimate the association between average numbers of Ix. scapularis collected on pets and human Lyme disease incidence. Regression residuals …

In its early stages, the Internet was viewed as an open forum for sharing and learning. Now, with a few dominant social media sites mediating most web access and the popular conception of these sites as polarizing filter bubbles, the promise of the open web appears to have been compromised. However, users of the microblogging website Tumblr do not experience this effect, instead encountering new ideas and topics alongside the content with which they intend to engage. Through a survey of over 250 Tumblr users, computational analysis of blogs, and interviews with users, my thesis seeks to uncover why Tumblr …

Electronic music, an art form that has existed in dynamic forms since the 1970s, is rapidly moving from the underground to the mainstream all across the globe. It is therefore a phenomenon that deserves significant cultural analysis in various global contexts. Still, there is a dearth of ethnographic explorations of electronic music and art in China. Over the course of three weeks, I conducted anthropological fieldwork in China to better understand the social worlds, aesthetic impulses, and musical philosophies of electronic producers in Beijing to better understand global circuits of cultural exchange, concepts of cultural authenticity, and the fluid concept …

Susan Sontag (1933-2004) is mostly known as a 20th Century New York intellectual, as a political activist, and – to both her benefit and her disadvantage – as an emblem of a certain avant-garde “cool.” In part due to the overwhelming status of her early essays, most notably “Against Interpretation” (1966) and “Notes on Camp” (1964), her work as a fiction writer – which she herself always maintained was her first life, her primary intellectual activity – has not received significant attention in the critical discourse. These fragments engage with various questions incited by her 1992 novel, The Volcano …

There are a wide variety of schooling options available to parents in Dhaka city. Classes are primarily taught in two languages: Bengali and English. Public schools provide only Bengali medium education. Choosing to enroll your child in a public school is associated with a range of sociocultural benefits and economic incentives, such as free textbooks and network externalities. Nevertheless, there is a persistent demand for English medium education as well. Unfortunately, high-quality English medium education is accessible only to the elite classes. This thesis aims to understand how parents make choices about their child’s education. Key factors include the impact …

Women’S Legal Agency And Property In The Court Records Of Late 19th-Century Brava, Lidwien Kapteijns, Alessandra Vianello
Women’S Legal Agency And Property In The Court Records Of Late 19th-Century Brava, Lidwien Kapteijns, Alessandra Vianello
Faculty Research and Scholarship
Drawing on the Islamic court records of Brava, a small Indian Ocean port city on the southern Benadir coast of Somalia, dating from the period 1893-1900, this essay analyzes the legal agency and economic roles of the women of Brava and sheds new light on social (especially family) relations in this town. The qāḍī’s court records give evidence of married women’s fully recognized (even if qualified) legal personhood and their full-fledged financial and economic agency. The free, married women of Brava of this period contributed fully and autonomously to the economic endeavors of their families and also interacted with non-related …

The Writing Center: Reports
This milestone [publication] invites a retrospective look at the impact and scope of our services. The many evolutions of the UM Writing Center—from a small “lab” for struggling writers in 2002 to a robust communication center for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff in 2017—have consistently embodied education at its best: communities of practice at the intersection of students, faculty, staff, and tutors.

Abstract
Status of Women in the Universal Church
This paper will be looking at the status of women from biblical times to their current position in the universal church. Throughout recorded history women have been considered the weaker sex. This concept is taken from biblical writings in the third chapter of 1 Peter “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered” (1 Peter 3:7,King James Bible (KJB)). Although the text says “honor” …

Abstract
In this thesis, I discuss the necessities that make employees want to work and stay with their current employer. I will discuss and define leadership then discuss flex time and unlimited vacation time as forms of benefits. Under demographics I will discuss education, age, gender, and geography. By discussing business size I will show that some benefits are more feasible for larger companies than smaller businesses. Lastly, I will briefly discuss globalization and its effects on employee retention. Throughout the text, appendixes will be referenced which can be found after my references pages at the end of the thesis.

Why Foreign Languages Should Be Taught In Elementary, Victoria Knight

Abstract
In this paper, I will be discussing the importance learning a foreign language during Elementary. Learning a foreign language is not only beneficial for a student’s job career and opportunities, but it also helps the brain. Research has shown that learning a foreign language at a younger age is actually easier for students, versus waiting until high school to introduce a foreign language. I will be addressing issues such as why schools wait until high school, the harm in waiting till high school, why this is a problem, oppositions of this topic, and more. Specifically, this paper will discuss …

In the 2014 horror film It Follows, a teenage woman is terrorized by a fatal curse that passes from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. The subject of the curse is relentlessly pursued by vacant-minded assassins that take the form of friends, loved ones, and strangers. The film is set near the infamous dividing line of Detroit’s 8 Mile Road, between what remains of the suburban working-class and the sacrifice zone of post-industrial urban triage. I argue that It Follows confronts audiences with the spectral manifestation of precarity: the deliberate and unequal redistribution of human fragility to populations who …

Dry Run Creek (DRC) watershed is a primary drainage basin located in northwestern Black Hawk County (Figure 1). It is fed predominantly by agricultural runoff in its upper reaches, and becomes heavily urbanized as it travels through the city of Cedar Falls, before draining into the Cedar River. The stream is perennial, however some are tiled and new segments have developed both naturally and artificially. Re-evaluation of the creek is underway and indicates some changes in urban and rural areas. Data was collected between Fall 2016 & Fall 2017 by University of Northern Iowa geomorphology students, using handheld GPS devices …
Adaptive Optics System Baseline Modeling For A Usaf Quad Axis Telescope, Nathaniel R. Morris
Adaptive Optics System Baseline Modeling For A Usaf Quad Axis Telescope, Nathaniel R. Morris
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Atmospheric turbulence has afflicted accurate observations of celestial bodies since man first gazed upon the stars. In this past century, the technology of adaptive optics was invented to help compensate for the optical distortions that atmospheric turbulence causes. As part of that technology, artificial guide stars, wave front sensors, deformable mirrors, and other optical components were developed to correct these wave aberrations. The purpose of this study focuses on the modeling and configuration of an adaptive optics system that is appropriate for the John Bryan Observatory Quad Axis Telescope System (JBO-Q), which is funded by the United States Air Force. …

Reciprocity In The Practice Of Publicly Engaged Scholarship – Reflections From A Transnational Literacy Project, Kate E. Kedley, Hector Efren Flores A.
College of Education Departmental Research
We examine the concept of “reciprocity” in publicly engaged literacy scholarship. The idea of reciprocity suggests that projects using a publicly engaged research model should be two-way partnerships with an effort given to balancing benefits to the researcher and to community partners. We (the researcher and the community partner) explore this dynamic by considering our own experiences working on a project with groups of youth in Honduras and in the United States. The groups share their cultures and experiences through writing and technology and challenge ideas about security and public space. Given the national, racial, cultural, economic, linguistic, and power …

Nebraska is known by vertebrate palaeontologists as the place in North America where there is a very complete Cenozoic geologic record of mammalian evolution over the last thirty-five million years or so. All you have to do is visit any of the many major natural history museums in the USA and in many countries around the world, including the UK, to see fossil skulls, articulated skeletons and large slabs of rock containing bones of fossil mammals from Nebraska to verify this assertion. Nebraska is also the site of Cretaceous rocks containing the oldest known Cretaceous fossil flower and many other …

Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin
Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin
English Faculty Publications
This chapter examines U.S.-based approaches to curricular revision of the Rhetoric and Writing Minor at the American University in Cairo (AUC) through analysis of faculty interviews and relevant artifacts. Through this analysis, and consideration of AUC’s development in the context of changes in Egypt, the chapter argues that U.S.-based curricular approaches satisfied various local needs among AUC’s writing faculty and students. These findings complicate claims within international composition studies, which are concerned with non-reflective export of U.S. linguistic, pedagogical and program models into international sites. This chapter calls for expanding the perspective of U.S.-based approaches to composition studies to include …
