Hungry Cities Partnership

This report provides an overview of Greater Mexico City and its food system. The city’s history, demographic characteristics, geography and economy are first discussed. The city’s urban food system and urban food security are then examined with a particular focus on formal and informal food retail, food expenditure patterns, and policies to combat hunger and food insecurity. Meeting the daily food demands of Mexico City’s over 20 million inhabitants requires the agricultural production of Mexico’s rural areas, its fishing industry and food imports. Food products arrive in the city from around the country in a combination of traditional and highly …

Supplementary Data and Tools

Data in this collection is largely comprised of subsetted data from two research cruises, the Nauru cruise held from June to July 1999 and the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) cruise held from May to July 2006. The data subset is limited to night conditions under low wind speeds of < 10 m/s and consists of the surface fluxes, radiance measurements from the Marine Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (M-AERI), the retrievals of the skin sea surface temperatures and skin sea surface temperature profiles from the M-AERI's radiance spectral measurements. Also included are line-by-line-radiative transfer simulations provided by Dr. Goshka Szczodrak, transmission coefficient spectra obtained from the HITRAN database, and wind speed data from the Special Sensing Microwave Imager (SSM/I) version 6. provided by Dr. Chelle Gentemann. Matlab code is provided which reads the datafile (DATA.mat) and outputs the figures illustrated in the paper Wong and Minnett (2017) (https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JC013351).

All Faculty Articles

The Neotropical genus Polychrus contains seven species of arboreal lizards. The type species for the genus is the widespread Polychrus marmoratus. We compared a few populations of P. marmoratus using 16S and COI mitochondrial gene sequences (1,035 bp total) and found several lineages existing under the name Polychrus marmoratus. Working backwards, using morphology we identify Polychrus marmoratus from the Guiana Shield and resurrect the name Leiolepis auduboni Hallowell for the species present in Trinidad, Tobago, and northern Venezuela. The number of species in the genus Polychrus is raised to eight. However, we also discuss evidence for the existence …

The Rise Of It Services Clusters In India: A Case Of Growth By Replication, Polavarapu M. Rao, M.H. Balasubrahmanya

Faculty of Marketing & International Business Publications

The Indian IT sector has grown from small beginnings at the bottom of value creation to a major player in the IT services segment of the global information and communications technology (ICT) industry. It commands a 55 percent share in the global market for IT services. India’s IT sector value proposition in terms of low cost with large supply of high quality talent is compelling. As a result, India has become the premier choice not only for outsourcing IT services by the developed-world’s multinational corporations (MNCs) but also for locating their own global In-house centers (GICs), which simultaneously compete and …

Countertransference As Koinonia, Karin A. Craven Jan 2017

Countertransference As Koinonia, Karin A. Craven

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

This thesis inquires after the lived-through experience of community in the congregation by the pastoral leader. It is predicated upon the multiple self whose plurality is understood through psychoanalytical and postcolonial theories as well as by developmental processes illumined by interpersonal neurobiology. The phenomenological inquiry into one pastor’s experience of community in the congregation yielded in vivo themes – movement, joy, and open; connect, conflict, and centering; table, hospitality, love, and diversity -- that were understood broadly from the wondering perspective of desire. Closer theoretical analysis of these in vivo themes from theological, psychological, and interpersonal neurobiological conceptual categories was …

Seeing Academically Marginalized Students’ Multimodal Designs From A Position Of Strength, Kate T. Anderson, Olivia G. Stewart, Dani Kachorsky

Education Specialties Faculty Publications

This article examines multimodal texts created by a cohort of academically marginalized secondary school students in Singapore as part of a language arts unit on persuasive composition. Using an interpretivist qualitative approach, we examine students’ multimodal designs to highlight opportunities presented for expanding literacy practices traditionally not often available to lower-tracked students. Findings highlight the authorial stances and rhetorical force that this cohort of students employed in their multimodal designs, despite lack of regular opportunities to author texts and a schooling history of low expectations. We echo arguments for the importance of providing all students with opportunities to take positions …

The Farm In The City In The Recent Past: Thoughts On A More Inclusive Urban Historiography, Ruth Glasser Jan 2017

The Farm In The City In The Recent Past: Thoughts On A More Inclusive Urban Historiography, Ruth Glasser

Urban and Community Studies Faculty Writing

The scholarly and journalistic literature usually treats urban agriculture as a new phenomenon, but it is a neglected dimension of urban history. Some U.S. cities, at least in the Northeast, had food-raising and processing practices not just in colonial times but right up until the relatively recent past. Three areas of history are explored that have mostly omitted discussion of city food production but nonetheless provide important frameworks to explore such production: urban development, agricultural, and immigrant history. Woven throughout this piece is evidence from a study of Waterbury, Connecticut. Local food production did not die when the Industrial Revolution …

Epidemiological Placism In Public Health Emergencies: Ebola In Two Dallas Neighborhoods, Carolyn Smith-Morris Jan 2017

Epidemiological Placism In Public Health Emergencies: Ebola In Two Dallas Neighborhoods, Carolyn Smith-Morris

Anthropology Research

Super-diverse cities face distinctive challenges during infectious disease outbreaks. For refugee and immigrant groups from epidemic source locations, identities of place blend with epidemiological logics in convoluted ways during these crises. This research investigated the relationships of place and stigma during the Dallas Ebola crisis. Ethnographic results illustrate how Africanness, more than neighborhood stigma, informed Dallas residents’ experience of stigma. The problems of place-based stigma, the imprecision of epidemiological placism, and the cohesion of stigma to semiotically powerful levels of place – rather than to realistic risk categories – are discussed. Taking its authority from epidemiology, placism is an …

Carbon Flux Phenology From The Sky: Evaluation For Maize And Soybean, Alexandria G. Mccombs, Cuizhen Wang, Ankur Desai, Andrew E. Suyker, Sebastien C. Bird Jan 2017

Carbon Flux Phenology From The Sky: Evaluation For Maize And Soybean, Alexandria G. Mccombs, Cuizhen Wang, Ankur Desai, Andrew E. Suyker, Sebastien C. Bird

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Carbon flux phenology is widely used to understand carbon flux dynamics and surface exchange processes. Vegetation phenology has been widely evaluated by remote sensors; however, very few studies have evaluated the use of vegetation phenology for identifying carbon flux phenology. Currently available techniques to derive net ecosystem exchange (NEE) from a satellite image use a single generic modeling subgroup for agricultural crops. But, carbon flux phenological processes vary highly with crop types and land management practices; this paper reexamines this assumption. Presented here are an evaluation of ground-truth remotely sensed vegetation indices with in situ NEE measurements and an identification …

Exploring Elementary Students’ Scientific Knowledge Of Agriculture Using Evidence-Centered Design, Molly Brandt, Cory Forbes, Jenny Keshwani

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The public is more disconnected from agriculture than ever. Americans are now two to four generations removed from the farm with a majority of Americans having no direct experience in agriculture. As a result, the public lacks the knowledge and appreciation of the food, fuel, and fiber it demands. The National Agricultural Learning Objectives (NALOs) were recently developed to describe students’ agricultural knowledge but have, as yet, not been used to guide research into students’ agricultural literacy. The purpose of this project is to further understand students’ agricultural literacy through NALO-based assessment of students’ knowledge. This study focused on the …

THE RISING RISK OF DROUGHT. Droughts of the twenty-first century are characterized by hotter temperatures, longer duration, and greater spatial extent, and are increasingly exacerbated by human demands for water. This situation increases the vulnerability of ecosystems to drought, including a rise in drought-driven tree mortality globally (Allen et al. 2015) and anticipated ecosystem transformations from one state to another—for example, forest to a shrubland (Jiang et al. 2013). When a drought drives changes within ecosystems, there can be a ripple effect through human communities that depend on those ecosystems for critical goods and services (Millar and Stephenson 2015). For …
