The immigration and citizenship laws that prevail in the 21st century United States — as well as the enforcement of them — reflect Eurocentric racial hierarchies and help create and reproduce a white-majority nation.
While schoolchildren hold a basic understanding of how slavery and Jim Crow segregation produced persistent racial divides and inequality in U.S. history, they are far less familiar with the story of how the pervasive legal exclusion, marginalization, and persecution of Asian and Latin American immigrants (and birthright citizens with Asian or Latin American heritage) has played a key role in maintaining white dominance in the United …

Ecological Effect Evaluation Of Comprehensive Control Project In Tarim River Basin, Chen Xi, Bao Anming, Wang Xinping, Guli. Japar, Huang Yue
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The Tarim River is the largest inland river in China, and it is also the mother river of more than 10 million people in Xinjiang Autonomous Region. Due to the increase of population and massive water consumed by the irrigation in the source region since 1960s, water flows into the mainstream of Tarim River reduced year by year. 300 000 meters river channel of the downstream and Tetme Lake in the end of the river have been dried out. Deterioration of the ecology and environment has shown a serious impact on people's life in the lower reaches of the Tarim …

Ecological Achievement Of Xinjiang Production And Construction Corps And Its Problems And Countermeasures, Zhou Hongfei, Wu Bo, Wang Yugang, Li Yan
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
For over 60 years, the agriculture reclamation by Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps has contributed greatly to economical development and social stability in Xinjiang Autonomous Region. In these years' history, the Corps went through 5 stages in reclamation:initial stage, fluctuative development, slow development, fast development, and last stage of great leap and transformation (from agriculture mainly to more industrial). During this process, the Corps has achieved greatly in terms of ecology:including agriculture, forestry, as well as protection of grassland, water body, and city. Meanwhile, the large scale land reclamation also induced a lot of ecological problems:including the degration of natural …

Climate And Water Resources In The Carolinas: Approaches To Applying Global Climate Change Information To Local Decisions, Kirsten Lackstrom, Gregory J. Carbone, Daniel L. Tufford, Aashka Patel
Journal of South Carolina Water Resources
A wide range of resource managers, community planners, and other stakeholders are increasingly asking for information regarding how climate change will affect South Carolina’s freshwater and coastal resources. They are interested in using this information for decisions related to infrastructure design, water system planning, vulnerability assessments, and ecosystem management. While climate change data, projections, and related information are also becoming increasingly available, many uncertainties around future climate change and its potential impacts often hinder its application. Furthermore it is often not available in a format or at a scale that is easily translated to local- and regional resource management decisions. …

Public concerns about water issues are key considerations in responding to changing hydrologic conditions. Literature is mixed on the social profiles associated with resource-related risks. Using data from a household survey, we compare concerns about water shortage, climate change impacts on water supply, poor water quality, and flooding. We assess the combined influence of social and locational factors on each concern and variations across three valleys in northern Utah. Generalized linear mixed modeling is used, given the ordinal nature of most variables. Water shortage was the greatest concern, and female, older, nonwhite, and recreationally active respondents were generally more concerned …

ABSTRACT:
The aim of the study was to assess how well the public transportation system of New Haven County was matched to the public transit need using publicly available geospatial datasets from state and federal sources. Geospatial bus stop data was extracted from public State of Connecticut data sets. Census tract geography was extracted from US Census TIGER files while census tract aggregated household vehicle access data was queried from the American Community Survey data access server. A census tract’s Need was defined as percentage of households reporting access to zero vehicles; its supply was defined as the number of …

A Mixed Methods Study Of Collaborating Teacher Leadership In Professional Development Schools (Pdss), Nedd James Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Professional Development Schools (PDSs) provide teachers with multiple new opportunities for leadership. As teachers are encouraged to assume new roles outside of the classroom and beyond the school, it is important to examine the concept of teacher leadership in practice--specifically, how it is perceived by those most closely associated with it. This study identifies a shared understanding of teacher leadership from collaborating teachers, using a sequential explanatory mixed methods design in PDSs within a large, diverse southern New Jersey school district-university partnership. The two-phase study examines perceptions about teacher leaders through data collected from the Teacher Leadership Inventory (TLI) (Angelle …

Poverty, The Great Unequalizer: Improving The Delivery System For Civil Legal Aid, Latonia Haney Keith
Poverty, The Great Unequalizer: Improving The Delivery System For Civil Legal Aid, Latonia Haney Keith
Catholic University Law Review
When individuals in the United States face civil justice issues, they are not entitled to legal counsel and therefore must secure paid counsel, proceed pro se or qualify for free legal assistance. As a result of the economic downturn, the number of Americans who are unable to afford legal counsel is now at an all-time high. In response to this ever-widening justice gap, the public interest community has launched multiple initiatives to supplement the underfunded legal aid system. Though valiant, this article argues that this approach has unfortunately created a complex, fragmented and overlapping delivery system for legal aid. This …
Local Measures: The Need For Neighborhood-Level Data In Youth Violence Prevention Initiatives, Jeffrey A. Butts, Alana M. Henniger
Local Measures: The Need For Neighborhood-Level Data In Youth Violence Prevention Initiatives, Jeffrey A. Butts, Alana M. Henniger
Publications and Research
In an attempt to assist local jurisdictions with violence prevention, the U.S. Department of Justice and other federal agencies launched the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention in 2010. More than a dozen cities participated in the National Forum, collaborating to increase the effectiveness of their local strategies for reducing youth violence. The Department of Justice asked John Jay College of Criminal Justice to monitor and assess the outcomes of the National Forum beginning in 2011. The study investigated the accomplishments and perceptions of the leadership networks in each city.
A Comparison Between Lynch Syndrome And Sporadic Colorectal Cancer Survivors’ Satisfaction With Their Healthcare Providers, Allison M. Burton-Chase, Wendy M. Parker, Katrina M. Polivka, Ellen R. Gritz
A Comparison Between Lynch Syndrome And Sporadic Colorectal Cancer Survivors’ Satisfaction With Their Healthcare Providers, Allison M. Burton-Chase, Wendy M. Parker, Katrina M. Polivka, Ellen R. Gritz
Dartmouth Scholarship
This study evaluated provider satisfaction in a sample of colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors with and without Lynch syndrome (LS). Participants were case–case-matched CRC survivors with (n=75) or without (n=75) LS (mean age of 55; range: 27–93). Participants completed a mailed questionnaire assessing demographics, clinical characteristics, healthcare utilization, psychosocial variables, and provider satisfaction. LS CRC survivors reported lower provider satisfaction scores on three subscales of the Primary Care Assessment Survey: communication (78.14 vs. 83.96; P<0.05), interpersonal treatment (78.58 vs. 85.30; P<0.05), and knowledge of the patient (60.34 vs. 69.86; P<0.01). Among LS CRC survivors, predictors for mean communication and trust subscale scores were location of treatment and socioeconomic status. Higher mean depression scores also were associated with trust, while social support predicted higher satisfaction with communication. Sporadic CRC survivor satisfaction is driven largely by age (communication, interpersonal treatment) and patient anxiety (communication), while seeing a provider more often was associated with increased satisfaction with knowledge of the patient. LS CRC survivors reported lower levels of provider satisfaction than sporadic CRC survivors. LS survivors who received care at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a comprehensive cancer center (CCC), reported higher satisfaction than those receiving care at other institutions. Depressive symptoms and socioeconomic status may impact provider satisfaction ratings. Exploration of other potential predictors of provider satisfaction should be examined in this population. Additionally, further research is needed to examine the potential impact of provider satisfaction on adherence to medical recommendations in LS CRC survivors, particularly those being treated outside of CCCs.

An Overview Of Complex Hadamard Cubes, Ben Lantz, Michael Zowada
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Hadamard matrices have been studied by many authors, but higher-dimensional generalizations of Hadamard matrices are new and still relatively unexplored. This paper will present an overview of Hadamard matrices and their generalizations. In particular we will explore Walsh functions and Hadamard matrices. We will also extend Yang's Product Construction to create complex 3-D Hadamard cubes.
A Graph Partitioning Model Of Congressional Redistricting, Shawn Doyle
A Graph Partitioning Model Of Congressional Redistricting, Shawn Doyle
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Redrawing congressional districts in the United States is a constitutionally required, yet politically controversial, task undertaken after each decennial census. Federal law requires contiguous, `relatively compact' congressional districts that maintain `approximately equal' population. Controversy is introduced when individual states redraw their districts, or redistrict, using partisan committees. States such as Ohio continue to redistrict with a committee appointed according to the current proportion of legislators' political parties to the whole. When political parties have majority power in redistricting committees, they can draw districts in a way that gives their party the best chance to keep its majority representation, a process …
The Jacksonian Conservatism Of Rufus P. Ranney The Politics And Jurisprudence Of A Northern Democrat From The Age Of Jackson To The Gilded Age, David M. Gold
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Ohio’s Rufus P. Ranney embodied many of the most intriguing social and political tensions of his time. He was an anticorporate campaigner who became John D. Rockefeller’s favorite lawyer. A student and law partner of abolitionist Benjamin F. Wade, Ranney acquired an antislavery reputation and recruited troops for the Union army; but as a Democratic candidate for governor he denied the power of Congress to restrict slavery in the territories, and during the Civil War and Reconstruction he condemned Republican policies.
Ranney was a key delegate at Ohio’s second constitutional convention and a two-time justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. …

Local Diurnal Wind‐Driven Variability And Upwelling In A Small Coastal Embayment, Ryan K. Walter, Emma C. Reid, Kristen A. Davis, Kevin Armenta, Kevin Merhoff, Nicholas J. Nidzieko
Physics
The oceanic response to high‐frequency local diurnal wind forcing is examined in a small coastal embayment located along an understudied stretch of the central California coast. We show that local diurnal wind forcing is the dominant control on nearshore temperature variability and circulation patterns. A complex empirical orthogonal function (CEOF) analysis of velocities in San Luis Obispo Bay reveals that the first‐mode CEOF amplitude time series, which accounts for 47.9% of the variance, is significantly coherent with the local wind signal at the diurnal frequency and aligns with periods of weak and strong wind forcing. The diurnal evolution of the …
