The Marcellus Shale Energy and Environmental Laboratory, or MSEEL is the nation’s first integrated research initiative on shale gas drilling. An experimental hydraulic fracturing gas well is the centerpiece of the MSEEL project, "which West Virginia University launched in fall 2014 in partnership with Northeast Natural Energy, the National Energy Technology Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy and Ohio State University. The five-year, $11 million project is the first-ever long-term, comprehensive field study of shale gas resources in which scientists will study the process from beginning-to-end.1 ” Because one dimension of the MSEEL analysis is the economic impacts and …

The Cinderella Of Academia: Is Higher Education Pedagogic Research Undervalued In Uk Research Assessment?, Dre Cotton, W Miller, P Kneale
Professional Services
Academic research is increasingly driven by research assessment exercises (in the UK, by the Research Excellence Framework, REF). These aim to compare outputs of researchers in each university with those elsewhere, but evaluation efforts have suffered from widespread criticism. The status of pedagogic research in higher education (HE)–once described as the ‘Cinderella’ of academia, but now an increasing part of university research activity–has also prompted some controversy. Both policy-makers and academics have raised questions about whether such research is appropriate for submission, and confusion exists over the distinction between pedagogic research and ‘scholarship of teaching and learning’. This project, funded …
A Grounded Theoretical Analysis Of Team Resilience In The Us Army, Megan L. Dove-Steinkamp
A Grounded Theoretical Analysis Of Team Resilience In The Us Army, Megan L. Dove-Steinkamp
Doctoral Dissertations
In order to develop a scientific understanding of team resilience, the three primary goals of the current research effort were to (1) summarize the research literature on resilience in and of small groups and systems, (2) articulate a framework to direct the synthesis of existing and future resilience-related research, and (3) construct a substantive theory of team resilience. This exploratory research used a grounded theory approach to explore resilience phenomena experienced by small unit members in the US Army. Participants were sampled from military occupational specialties within Combat Arms, as classified by the US Army Regimental System, and included members …

Combined Sea-Level And Climate Controls On Limestone Formation, Hiatuses And Ammonite Preservation In The Blue Lias Formation, South Britain (Uppermost Triassic – Lower Jurassic), Graham P Weedon, Hugh C Jenkyns, Kevin N Page
Combined Sea-Level And Climate Controls On Limestone Formation, Hiatuses And Ammonite Preservation In The Blue Lias Formation, South Britain (Uppermost Triassic – Lower Jurassic), Graham P Weedon, Hugh C Jenkyns, Kevin N Page
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Lithostratigraphic and magnetic-susceptibility logs for four sections in the Blue Lias Formation are combined with a re-assessment of the ammonite biostratigraphy. A Shaw plot correlating the West Somerset coast with the Devon/Dorset coast at Lyme Regis, based on 63 common biohorizon picks, together with field evidence, demonstrate that intra-formational hiatuses are common. Compared to laminated shale deposition, the climate associated with light marl is interpreted as both drier and stormier. Storm-related non-deposition favoured initiation of limestone formation near the sediment–water interface. Areas and time intervals with reduced water depths had lower net accumulation rates and developed a greater proportion of …

Protests From The Pulpit: The Confessing Church And The Sermons Of World War Ii, William S. Skiles
Protests From The Pulpit: The Confessing Church And The Sermons Of World War Ii, William S. Skiles
Sermon Studies
This article examines sermons delivered by Confessing Church pastors in the Nazi dictatorship during World War II, and specifically explores the messages of opposition against the regime. The approach of most historians has focused on the history of the Christian institutions, its leaders, and its persecution by the Nazi regime, leaving the most elemental task of the pastor - that is, preaching - largely unexamined. To understand Confessing Church opposition during World War II, I have analyzed 255 sermons delivered in pulpits, published in pamphlets, and broadcast over the airwaves. Furthermore, I have examined sermons delivered "out in the open" …

Continuing Legal Education Presentations
For investigative research, the internet is a helpful tool, but it is not a perfect or a complete toolkit. For a variety of reasons, not all types of questions can be found, and not all people or businesses have significant digital footprints. Social media sites, public databases, and search engines facilitate the kinds and success of research possible online. However, it remains important to know which tools offer what types of information and any limitations in accuracy and currency.

Past Perfect: Utopian Visions In Historical Perspective, Seton Hall University, Department Of History
Symposium in Comparative History
This symposium seeks to explore the phenomenon of utopias in all their incarnations—real and imagined; micro and macro; past, present and future. We seek to situate utopian thinking historically and culturally. Are these visions of a perfect world a distinctive feature of Western modernity or do they tap into a more universal impulse? What can utopias tell us about the societies and eras that produced them? What is the view of human nature underlying utopian ideals? We look to explore the processes by which utopian ideals are developed and disseminated. What sort of people build utopias? What makes some utopian …

Migration And The Post-Fledging Period: Examining Two Critical Stages Of The Cerulean Warbler Life Cycle, Douglas William Raybuck
Migration And The Post-Fledging Period: Examining Two Critical Stages Of The Cerulean Warbler Life Cycle, Douglas William Raybuck
Student Theses and Dissertations
To reverse declining population trends for migratory birds, a full annual and life cycle conservation approach is necessary. However, two life history stages of relatively high mortality—the migratory and the post-fledging periods—are not well-understood for most declining bird species, including the Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulea), a declining species considered vulnerable to extinction. Here, I explored the possibility of using geolocators to obtain migration data for Cerulean Warblers and examined potential negative effects of applying these devices to this species, finding no effects during the breeding season of deployment but lowered annual return rates compared with color-banded control counterparts. I also …

The Hidden Morbidity Of Cancer: An Exploratory Study Of Burden In Caregivers Of Cancer Patients With Brain Metastases, Marlon Garzo Saria
Dissertations
The aim of this dissertation was to explore the antecedents and outcomes of caregiver burden within the context of brain metastases using the Comprehensive Health Seeking and Coping Paradigm as a framework to describe the highly interactive iii relationship among the variables. The first paper derived from this dissertation is a literature review that describes the challenges of caring for a patient with brain metastases and highlights the implications for healthcare professionals. The second paper presents the analysis of the relationships between caregiver burden and the affective disorders anxiety and depression. It describes the higher risk of screening positive for …
The Mental Health Of Indigenous Peoples In Canada: A Critical Review Of Research, Sarah E. Nelson, Kathi Wilson
The Mental Health Of Indigenous Peoples In Canada: A Critical Review Of Research, Sarah E. Nelson, Kathi Wilson
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
Many scholars assert that Indigenous peoples across the globe suffer a disproportionate burden of mental illness. Research indicates that colonialism and its associated processes are important determinants of Indigenous peoples’ health internationally. In Canada, despite an abundance of health research documenting inequalities in morbidity and mortality rates for Indigenous peoples, relatively little research has focused on mental health. This paper provides a critical scoping review of the literature related to Indigenous mental health in Canada. We searched eleven databases and two Indigenous health-focused journals for research related to mental health, Indigenous peoples, and Canada, for the years 2006–2016. Over two …

The Impact Of Collective Bargaining And Local Appropriations On Faculty Salaries And Benefits At U.S. Community Colleges, Barry R. Mayhall, Stephen G. Katsinas, Nathaniel J. Bray
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
This study examines the impact of collective bargaining and local appropriations on salaries and fringe benefits of full-time faculty at U.S. community colleges. A more nuanced view is offered, by drawing appropriate institutional peer-group comparisons of rural, suburban, and urban community colleges to more accurately and precisely show just how much of a difference the presence or lack of collective bargaining, local appropriations, and the combined impact of both, actually make. Further, given the technical nature of the few comprehensive studies of fringe benefits for community college faculty, we integrate the findings of King and Maldanado.

Monetary Compensation Of Full-Time Faculty At American Public Regional Universities: The Impact Of Geography And The Existence Of Collective Bargaining, Stephen G. Katsinas, Johnson A. Ogun, Nathaniel J. Bray
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
This paper examines monetary compensation of 127,222 full-time faculty employed by the 390 regional universities in the United States who are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Compensation data published by the U.S. Department of Education and organizations concerned with faculty, including the American Association of University Professors and others, typically lump all four-year public university faculty together, ignoring well-known differences in teaching workloads at different types of public four-year universities (four instead of two courses taught each term, etc.). Further, many compensation studies do not examine fringe benefits, which are 30 percent of total monetary …

Role Of Private Maritime Security Companies (Pmscs) In Sensitive Shipping Management, Helen Tung
MARENER 2017
The role of Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSCs) peaked at the height of piracy threats mid 2008. Since then there has been much development of soft guidance from ISO code, BMP4 practice and further discussions of how best to ensure safety in shipping particularly in relation to the high seas. PMSCs work along side important stakeholders in the shipping industry, including the Captain, seafarers, insurers, shipowners, charterers amongst others; what if shipments include sensitive materials? What guidance is there for PMSCs to ensure further safety measures or do the current soft guides provide sufficient guidance. This topic is in line …

South-South: Too Political?, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin
When it comes to researching South-South relationships, a powerful political imperative underpins studies of such relationships—an imperative that seems to always point northwards in one way or another. This imperative sometimes leads to the application of pre-existing theories to studies of circulation between different parts of the world and of the roles of the individuals driving these circulations. When, regardless of the situation in question, we must always identify a dominator and a dominated party, a predator and a victim, a colonizer and a colonial subject, we risk developing a historical picture that is incomplete or distorted. Promoting studies …

Seasonal periodicity of seed germination and its relationship to seasonal changes in temperature and soil moisture have been well studied in seeds of species with physiological dormancy. However, relatively little information is available on the role of these environmental factors in controlling germination of seeds with physical dormancy (PY). Our primary aim was to determine if seeds of the cold desert sand dune semi-shrub Eremosparton songoricum exhibits seasonal periodicity of seed germination and the relationship between seed dormancy break and soil temperature and moisture. In the laboratory, seeds incubated on dry, wet, wet-dry and dry-wet sand were exposed to a …

Sitting in my office I have a box. In it are the written prayers from student leaders that were part of the 100 days of prayer for me and the provost after we assumed our new roles this fall. The box is a replica of J.N. Andrews’ trunk that he used when he first left for mission service. The proportions are exactly 50 percent.
What is particularly unique is that the materials are almost all taken from Lamson Hall bedframes. The individual who made the box so carefully is one of our valued staff, Harold Schmidt. This story is his …

Realizing Critical Business Information Literacy: Opportunities, Definitions, And Best Practices, Ilana Stonebraker, Caitlan Maxwell, Kenny Garcia, Jessica Jerrit
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
What does it mean to be an ethical businessperson, and how does an ethical businessperson create, locate, organize, and evaluate business information? Critical business information literacy (CBIL) is the application of social justice to business information literacy. This article seeks to define, discuss, and realize CBIL by tracing the literatures of critical librarianship, critical management, and corporate social responsibility. To establish best practices, the authors drew upon applications of CBIL at four institutions of different size, geography, and scale. The intent is to provide spaces and foundations for further CBIL application and discussion.

Jilbab or veil is a special cloth in Islam religion, particularly for women. The users are increased significantly in a recent decade in Indonesia. Not to mention also the issue about using of veil in higher education is important in which the discourse about religion is getting easier for being spread by Islamic activists. This article attempts to explain that the phenomenon of differentiation about variation of using veil that occur in campuses is because the differentiation of legitimation from the variation group in Islam itself; Tarbiyah, Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), and Salafi. The main argument from this article is …

Nowadays, technological innovations and sciences have reached the stage of modification and improvement of the capacity of the human body. This technology varies from prosthetic devices, implants, plastic surgery, drugs, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and others. Several previous studies have shown that the advancement of this technological intervention has created a consumer culture of human enhancement products and services, for instance, non-therapeutic drugs. However, previous discussions about human enhancement products and services failed to provide further explanation on morphological freedom from the perspective of consumer culture. Morphological freedom is an individual right to modify or otherwise, refuse to modify one’s physical …

The Tension Between Religion And Democracy, B. Herry-Priyono
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
The growing revival of religious sentiments in the past few decades exposes serious faults in the explanatory power of the so-called modernization theories, urging social scien- tists to seek new avenues in understanding the phenomena. The article focuses on the way the present character of religious fundamentalism needs to be understood not as a form of traditionalism but as one of the springboard effects inseparable from hybrid modernity. In particular, it highlights the tension between religious fundamentalism and democracy as revolving around at least two points. One is the antinomy between diver- sity as the sine-qua-non of democracy and the …
