Turlington’S Balsam Of Life, Olive Jones, Allen Vegotsky
Turlington’S Balsam Of Life, Olive Jones, Allen Vegotsky
Northeast Historical Archaeology
Robert Turlington (1697-1766), weaver, patent medicine vendor, and entrepreneur left his mark in our archaeological record. Bottles embossed BY THE KING’S ROYAL PATENT GRANTED TO / ROBT TURLINGTON FOR HIS INVENTED BALSAM OF LIFE / JANUY 26 1754 / LONDON bear witness to a medicine marketed in distinctive packaging for close to 175 years. Turlington successfully used several strategies to market Balsam of Life, but was less able to protect Balsam of Life from imitators. After his death, his business survived until 1804. The distinctive bottles were still being made in 1919.
Turlington’s patent, dated 1743/44, listed 27 ingredients in …

Reciprocal Elucidation: A Student-Led Pedagogy In Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conferences, H Walkington, J Hill, Pe Kneale
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
There is no previous study of the benefits of attending a national multidisciplinary conference dedicated to undergraduate researchers, despite the growing number of such conferences internationally. This paper addresses the gap in knowledge of the learning gains from these conferences, and reveals a student driven learning process, a multidisciplinary signature pedagogy. It presents the results of 90 in-depth interviews with student conference participants conducted over three consecutive years of a multidisciplinary National Conference of Undergraduate Research (2012–2014). This paper uniquely captures the student voice on their perceived learning gains from this experience. The results reveal that some students co-create a …
Playthings In Early Modernity: Party Games, Word Games, Mind Games, Allison Levy
Playthings In Early Modernity: Party Games, Word Games, Mind Games, Allison Levy
Ludic Cultures, 1100-1700
Why do we play games—with and upon each other as well as ourselves? When are winners also losers, and vice-versa? How and to what end do we stretch the spaces of play? What happens when players go "out of bounds," or when games go "too far"? Moreover, what happens when we push the parameters of inquiry: when we play with traditional narratives of ludic culture, when we rewrite the rules?
An innovative volume of fifteen interdisciplinary essays at the nexus of material culture, performance studies, and game theory, Playthings in Early Modernity emphasizes the rules of the game(s) as well …

First Evidence Of Denitrification Vis-À-Vis Monsoon In The Arabian Sea Since Late Miocene, Shubham Tripathi, Manish Tiwari, Jongmin Lee, Boo Keun Khim
Faculty Publications
© The Author(s) 2017. In the Arabian Sea, South Asian monsoon (SAM)-induced high surface water productivity coupled with poor ventilation of intermediate water results in strong denitrification within the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Despite the significance of denitrification in the Arabian Sea, we have no long-term record of its evolution spanning the past several million years. Here, we present the first record of denitrification evolution since Late Miocene (∼10.2 Ma) in the Eastern Arabian Sea, where the SAM generates moderate surface water productivity, based on the samples retrieved during the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 355. We find that …

Western North American Naturalist
New host records are reported for Campiglossa snowi (Hering), Tephritis leavittensis Blanc, and Trupanea nigricornis (Coquillett) on Arnica chamissonis Less. and C. snowi on Arnica mollis Hook. Campiglossa snowi was the only fruit fly reared from A. chamissonis from 3 different populations from the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, over 5 sample years. A total of 1114 specimens of C. snowi were reared from the flower heads of 337 plants averaging 5 flower heads per plant. Seed damage from fly larvae ranged from 0% to 54.8% per capitulum, with an overall average of 18.3% across all years and between 3 sites on …

Primary Care-Based Models For The Treatment Of Opioid Use Disorder: A Scoping Review, P Todd Korthuis, Dennis Mccarty, Melissa Weimer, Christina Bougatsos, Ian Blazina, Bernadette Zakher, Sara Grusing, Beth Devine, Roger Chou
Project ECHO Bibliography
Greater integration of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD) in U.S. primary care settings would expand access to treatment for this condition. Models for integrating MAT into primary care vary in structure. This article summarizes findings of a technical report for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality describing MAT models of care for OUD, based on a literature review and interviews with key informants in the field. The report describes 12 representative models of care for integrating MAT into primary care settings that could be considered for adaptation across diverse health care settings. Common components of existing …

Beyond Personal Transformation: Engaging Students As Agents For Social Change., James A. Gambrell
Beyond Personal Transformation: Engaging Students As Agents For Social Change., James A. Gambrell
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Although Transformative Learning Theory (TLT) has been around for more than 40 years, few studies empirically engage critical theoretical frameworks to move beyond personal learning to identify the impacts of transformation on society. The purpose of this article is to discuss academic literature that expands TLT in the direction of societal transformation rather than merely personal change. Moreover, this article appeals for empirical studies that inform TLT through various socially constructed variables of race, class, (trans)gender, (a)sexuality, (dis)ability, and culture. The author titles this post-modern, intersectional approach critical social transformative learning theory.
