Geoarchaeological Modeling Of Late Paleoindian Site Location In The Northwestern Great Lakes Region, Robert J. Legg, Robert R. Regis, John M. Lambert, Matthew Liesch, Charles B. Travis
Journal Articles
Full-time occupation of recently deglaciated landscapes in the northwestern Great Lakes by late Paleoindian groups marks a key milestone in the colonization of the region, yet settlement-subsistence systems of these colonizing populations remains poorly understood. Here we apply geoarchaeological modeling and early Holocene environmental reconstruction to analyze environmental settings of known late Paleoindian sites in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Our results reveal significant settlement patterning associated with this early Holocene record, highlighting the spatial correlation between site locations and high ground adjacent to hilly terrain and inland lakes – prime locations for monitoring the movement of large game. The analysis highlights …
Human Migration And Environmental Degradation: The Toll On Vulnerable Women And Children, Catherine Zeman, Mark Grey, Michele Devlin
Human Migration And Environmental Degradation: The Toll On Vulnerable Women And Children, Catherine Zeman, Mark Grey, Michele Devlin
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The early years of the 21st Century have seen major changes in the world’s demographic profile. The world’s total population is currently just over seven billion. Middle-range projections by the United Nations Population Fund suggest the world’s population will grow to ten billion by about 2050 and about eleven billion at the end of the century. Higher and lower projections for the end of the 21st century are 16.5 billion and 7 billion respectively depending on trends in fertility rates, which in general are projected to decline. Global average fertility rates have also dropped from 4.5 children in 1970 to …
An Investigation Of The Correlation Between Mental Workload And Web User’S Interaction, Joaquim Filipe Romero
An Investigation Of The Correlation Between Mental Workload And Web User’S Interaction, Joaquim Filipe Romero
Dissertations
Mental Workload, a psychological concept, was identified as being linked with task’s and system’s performance. In the context of Human-Computer Interaction, recent research has identified Mental Workload as an important measure in the designing and evaluation of web interfaces, and as an additional and supplemental insight to typical usability evaluation methods. Simultaneously, web logs containing data related to web users’ interaction (e.g. scrolling; mouse clicks) have been proved useful in evaluating the usability of web sites by analysing the data tracked for hundreds of users. In order to study if the potential of logs of user interaction can be applied …

Unusual Geologic Evidence Of Coeval Seismic Shaking And Tsunamis Shows Variability In Earthquake Size And Recurrence In The Area Of The Giant 1960 Chile Earthquake, M. Cisternas, E. Garrett, R. Wesson, T. Dura, Lisa L. Ely
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
An uncommon coastal sedimentary record combines evidence for seismic shaking and coincident tsunami inundation since AD 1000 in the region of the largest earthquake recorded instrumentally: the giant 1960 southern Chile earthquake (Mw 9.5). The record reveals significant variability in the size and recurrence of megathrust earthquakes and ensuing tsunamis along this part of the Nazca-South American plate boundary. A 500-m long coastal outcrop on Isla Chiloé, midway along the 1960 rupture, provides continuous exposure of soil horizons buried locally by debris-flow diamicts and extensively by tsunami sand sheets. The diamicts flattened plants that yield geologically precise ages to correlate …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
We characterized wildfire transmission and exposure within a matrix of large land tenures (federal, state, and private) surrounding 56 communities within a 3.3 million ha fire prone region of central Oregon US. Wildfire simulation and network analysis were used to quantify the exchange of fire among land tenures and communities and analyze the relative contributions of human versus natural ignitions to wildfire exposure. Among the land tenures examined, the area burned by incoming fires averaged 57% of the total burned area. Community exposure from incoming fires ignited on surrounding land tenures accounted for 67% of the total area burned. The …

Estimating Walking And Bicycling At The State Level, Krista Nordback, Mike Sellinger, Taylor Phillips
TREC Final Reports
Estimates of vehicle miles traveled (VMT) drive policy and planning decisions for surface transportation. No similar metric is computed for cycling and walking. What approaches could be used to compute such a metric on the state level? This report discusses three such approaches, identifies the advantages and disadvantages of each, and applies them to Washington State. The first approach employs travel survey data. The second approach is sample-based using pedestrian and bicycle count data. The third approach is an aggregate demand model approach using demographic data combined with count data. Due to data limitations, none of these methods could be …
Comprehensive Personnel Development In Deafblind Education: Exploration Of A Model, Catherine Nelson, Amy T. Parker
Comprehensive Personnel Development In Deafblind Education: Exploration Of A Model, Catherine Nelson, Amy T. Parker
Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
The diverse learners who are deafblind have unique and often intensive needs that require the services of qualified, specifically trained educators. Although the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) has developed competencies for Teacher of the Deafblind, the role is not officially recognized in most states. Therefore, sustaining personnel development training in deafblindness has been challenging. This webinar explored a model for a comprehensive system of personnel development in deafblind education that looks at standards, preservice training, inservice/professional development, leadership development, research, and finally, national and local planning, coordination, and evaluation.

Energy Costs And Rural Alaska Out-Migration, Matthew Berman
Energy Costs And Rural Alaska Out-Migration, Matthew Berman
ISER Reports
This report contains results of a formal statistical analysis of the association of high prices for home heating fuel with out-migration from rural Alaska communities, using data from Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend applications from 2003 to 2015. Although anecdotal reports have described hardships caused by the rising cost of fuel, this study is the first to subject the hypothesis of fuel-related out-migration to rigorous statistical testing. This study addressed five main research questions: 1. What is the evidence that out-migration from rural Alaska communities was associated with fuel prices? 2. How sensitive are out-migration rates to fuel prices? 3. Does …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The management and conservation of landraces and wild germplasm of Phaseolus have influenced the diversity levels reported in previous studies (Worthington et al., 2012; Soleri et al., 2013; Chávez-Servia et al., 2016). Oaxaca is located at southern Mexico and it is a complex state due its accidental geography and variable climatic composition influenced by the Gulf of México and the Pacific Ocean (García-Mendoza et al., 2004). The state of Oaxaca is divided into eight ethno-cultural regions (INEGI, 2017; http://www.inegi.org.mx) clearly differentiated by the presence of ethno-linguistic groups and a wide variety of landscapes, weather, wildlife and …

The Influence Of Föhn Winds On Glacial Lake Washburn And Palaeotemperatures In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, During The Last Glacial Maximum, Maciej Obryk, Peter Doran, Ed Waddington, Chris Mckay
Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Large glacial lakes, including Glacial Lake Washburn, were present in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) despite a colder and drier climate. To address the mechanism capable of generating enough meltwater to sustain these large lakes, a conceptual model was developed based on the warming potential of infrequent contemporary föhn winds. The model suggests that föhn winds were capable of generating enough meltwater to sustain large glacial lakes during the LGM by increasing degree days above freezing (DDAF) and prolonging the melt season. A present-day relationship between infrequent summer föhn winds and DDAF was established. …

The Development Of A Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine Wake Model For Use In Wind Farm Layout Optimization With Noise Level Constraints, Eric Blaine Tingey
The Development Of A Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine Wake Model For Use In Wind Farm Layout Optimization With Noise Level Constraints, Eric Blaine Tingey
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on providing the means to use vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) in wind farms as an alternative form of harnessing wind energy in offshore and urban environments where both wake and acoustic effects of turbines are important considerations. In order for VAWTs to be used in wind farm layout analysis and optimization, a reduced-order wake model is needed to calculate velocities around a turbine quickly and accurately. However, a VAWT wake model has not been available to accomplish this task. Using vorticity data from computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of VAWTs and cross-validated Gaussian distribution and polynomial surface …

Assessing And Improving Student Understanding Of Tree-Thinking, Tyler A. Kummer
Assessing And Improving Student Understanding Of Tree-Thinking, Tyler A. Kummer
Theses and Dissertations
Evolution is the unifying theory of biology. The importance of understanding evolution by those who study the origins, diversification and diversity life cannot be overstated. Because of its importance, in addition to a scientific study of evolution, many researchers have spent time studying the acceptance and the teaching of evolution. Phylogenetic Systematics is the field of study developed to understand the evolutionary history of organisms, traits, and genes. Tree-thinking is the term by which we identify concepts related to the evolutionary history of organisms. It is vital that those who undertake a study of biology be able to understand and …

Expanding Support For Graduate Students: Library Workshops On Research Funding Opportunities, Carrie L. Forbes, Gina Schlesselman-Tarango, Peggy Keeran
University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship
This case study describes the development, implementation, and assessment of a series of grants research workshops for graduate students, which were implemented to fill a gap in graduate student support. We assessed the workshops through a series of focus groups, and findings show overall satisfaction with the grants tools and workshop. However, participants noted areas of improvement around outreach and promotion and general communication with graduate students. Additional themes emerged related to graduate student socialization and research behaviors, which suggests that librarians have an important role to serve in these areas.

Poor Transferability Of A Distribution Model For A Widespread Coastal Marsh Bird In The Southeastern United States, Nicolette S. Roach, Elizabeth A. Hunter, Nathan P. Nibbelink, Kyle Barrett
Publications
Species distribution models have been applied across a wide range of spatial scales to generate information for conservation planning. Understanding how well models transfer through space and time is important to promote effective species–habitat conservation. Here, we assess model transferability in coastal tidal marshes of the southeastern United States using count data of a widespread marsh bird: the Clapper Rail (Rallus crepitans). We developed species–habitat models at a state level in both South Carolina and Georgia, and then assessed how well top models from each state predicted abundance in the other state. Internally (locally) validated models performed well …

What It Means To Be Special: Two Sisters Discuss Their Experiences, Gene Fellner, Mark Comesanas, Laritza Duperoy, Yaritza Duperoy
Publications and Research
In this article, two adolescent sisters discuss and reflect upon the impact that the special education classification of one of them has had on their lives. The sisters, co-authors of this text, participated in designing the study and analyzing the data we produced; their voices are the core of this article. Issues about inclusion, the harms and benefits of special education classification, stigma, the multi-edged meanings of what it means to be “special,” and the often complicit roles of educators in perpetuating exclusionary policies all arise in the sisters’ discussions with each other, with their co-authors, and with pre-service teachers.
For Function Or Transformation? A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Education Under The Sustainable Development Goals, Radhika Mitter, Nigel O.M. Brissett
For Function Or Transformation? A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Education Under The Sustainable Development Goals, Radhika Mitter, Nigel O.M. Brissett
Sustainability and Social Justice
We conduct a critical discourse analysis of the extent to which Sustainable Development Goal 4, “to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all and promote lifelong learning,” promotes a utilitarian and/or transformative approach to education. Our findings show that despite transformative language used throughout the Agenda, the SDGs primarily espouse a pro-growth model of development and a utilitarian approach to education. We conclude that for SDG 4 to truly contribute to sustainable development and transformation, there must be a shift in the dominant educational discourse so that issues of social and environmental justice are placed at the heart of …
