Gold: Stories Of A City, Vivek Vijayan Njanappilly Apr 2017

Gold: Stories Of A City, Vivek Vijayan Njanappilly

Architecture Senior Theses

The thesis explores the latent influences of gold and its value systems on the urban geo-politics of a South Indian city. It is an anthology of sporadic narrations recording the growth and transformation of a city over time. These narrative compositions contain traces of the past, the city of the present and speculative futures. They indicate change without erasure. Their values are embodied in gold; malleable, ductile and fungible in its different forms.

The intention of the thesis is not to merely speak of a specific commodity nor is it to narrate the history of a city. It is an …

Venture Capital And Private Equity Investing In India: An Exploratory Study, G Sabarinathan, Aditya Muralidhar, Ahana Shetty

Working Papers

The Indian Venture Capital and Private Equity (VC and PE) industry have witnessed a dramatic increase in terms of the number of enterprises funded as well as the volume of capital committed. 850 funds have supported 3699enterprises across a wide range of industries, across the Northern, Southern and Western regions of the country predominantly. They have provided 5545 rounds of funding resulting in around 8800 transactions. These are large volumes even by international standards. Yet the industry remains under-researched. This paper builds on and significantly extends some prior work in this area. It finds that through the analysis that the …

Knowledge Production, Pedagogy And Research In Ir: Perspectives From India, Seema Narain Ph.D. Apr 2017

Knowledge Production, Pedagogy And Research In Ir: Perspectives From India, Seema Narain Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The implications of Eurocentrism in the production of historical and theoretical knowledge have been the subject of debates in multiple disciplines, including anthropology, history, and geography, yet in the field of International Relations (IR), an examination of the implications of Eurocentrism has, until recently, been little studied. Therefore, there is a critical need to revisit pedagogy and research in India to address this gap. This paper looks at knowledge production, pedagogy and research in India from the point of view of countering Eurocentrism in the IR discipline. It first discusses Eurocentrism and highlights the implications of Eurocentrism in the field …

Leveraging The Power Of Place In Citizen Science For Effective Conservation Decision Making, G. Newman, M. Chandler, M. Clyde, B. Mcgreavy, M. Haklay, H. Ballard, S. Gray, R. Scarpino, R. Hauptfeld, D. Mellor, J. Gallo

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Many citizen science projects are place-based - built on in-person participation and motivated by local conservation. When done thoughtfully, this approach to citizen science can transform humans and their environment. Despite such possibilities, many projects struggle to meet decision-maker needs, generate useful data to inform decisions, and improve social-ecological resilience. Here, we define leveraging the ‘power of place’ in citizen science, and posit that doing this improves conservation decision making, increases participation, and improves community resilience. First, we explore ‘place’ and identify five place dimensions: social-ecological, narrative and name-based, knowledge-based, emotional and affective, and performative. We then thematically analyze 134 …

Synoptic Atmospheric Conditions, Land Cover, And Equivalent Temperature Variations In Kentucky, Dorothy Yemaa Na-Yemeh Apr 2017

Synoptic Atmospheric Conditions, Land Cover, And Equivalent Temperature Variations In Kentucky, Dorothy Yemaa Na-Yemeh

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Research has demonstrated that equivalent temperature (TE), which incorporates both the surface air temperature (T) and moist heat content associated with atmospheric moisture, is a better indicator of overall heat content. This thesis follows up on a study that used TE to determine the impacts of land use/land cover and air masses on the atmospheric heat content over Kentucky during the growing season (April-September). The study, which used data from the Kentucky Mesonet, reveals that moist weather types dominate the growing season and, as expected, differences between T and TE are smaller under dry atmospheric conditions …

Characterizing South American Mesoscale Convective Complexes Using Isotope Hydrology, Kyle J. Hogancamp Apr 2017

Characterizing South American Mesoscale Convective Complexes Using Isotope Hydrology, Kyle J. Hogancamp

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Mesoscale convective complexes (MCCs) over subtropical South America contribute an average annual volume of precipitation equal to approximately seven km3 and occur with an average regularity in the region, with more than 30 per warm season. Isotopic characteristics of precipitation, such as δ2H and δ18O values, provide information that can be used to identify unique processes and sources related to precipitation events. The largest database of isotope characteristics of precipitation within the region is the Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP), which provides varying temporal resolution data from stations around the world, including subtropical South America.

Using this database, …

Examining The Relationship Between Medical Concerns And Overall Mental Health Rating, Sarah M. Wilson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It is widely supported that there are significant, positive relationships between the occurrence of some mental health symptoms and physical illnesses. Research indicates that the burden experienced by those with a physical and mental illness are magnified compared to individuals who do not experience an illness. More specifically, one of the burdens experienced by individuals is the monetary burden of affording the necessary health services to properly manage their illness.

This study attempts to reveal a difference between mental health symptom count for individuals who do and do not experience difficulty affording health care for their physical problems. The first …

Are Angel Networks Different From Individual Angels?: Evidence From An Emerging Economy, G Sabarinathan

Working Papers

Angel investments have been growing in volume and importance as a source of funding for startups in India and elsewhere in the world. The emergence of angel investment networks has released more data on the investment activities of angels. This paper draws on two key strands that have appeared in recent research relating to angel investments. One, the importance of examining angel investments at the country level has been recognized in view of the differences in institutions across countries and their influence on investment outcomes. Second, it is being recognized that angel networks may be different from individual angels. This …

Emerging Vector- Borne Diseases Caribbean Perspective: Should We Be Worried About Chikungunya?, Praveen Durgampudi, Melissa Magenta

Virginia Journal of Public Health

Zika virus is currently attracting a huge international attention. Recently concluded Rio Olympics are a testament to the importance of public health planning and preparedness to counter the threat of emerging infections. Zika is a documented condition from 1940’s and is not so extensively studied until recently. The similarity of the virus transmission and the presence of a common vector pose a significant threat to the community. The strong link of the vector to the environmental conditions is another factor that has to thoroughly explored to prevent the rapid spread that was evident in other regions of the world.

Three …

No. 09: Comparing Household Food Security In Cities Of The Global South Through A Gender Lens, Liam Riley, Mary Caesar Apr 2017

No. 09: Comparing Household Food Security In Cities Of The Global South Through A Gender Lens, Liam Riley, Mary Caesar

Hungry Cities Partnership

Understanding the determinants of urban food insecurity requires sensitivity to local cultural contexts and taking into account a globally relevant framework for analysis. A gender lens is amenable to this kind of analysis because it is rooted in local configurations of households, livelihoods and consumption patterns, while also being animated by a longstanding global effort to create a world in which men and women are equal. This discussion paper is aimed at academic researchers and development practitioners concerned with urban food insecurity. It demonstrates the usefulness of a gender lens of analysis for generating new insights and questions about household …

Parks, People, And Property Values: The Changing Role Of Green Spaces In Antebellum Manhattan, Catherine Mcneur Apr 2017

Parks, People, And Property Values: The Changing Role Of Green Spaces In Antebellum Manhattan, Catherine Mcneur

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

The role that parks played in Manhattan changed dramatically during the antebellum period. Originally dismissed as unnecessary on an island embraced by rivers, parks became a tool for real estate development and gentrification in the 1830s. By the 1850s, politicians, journalists, and landscape architects believed Central Park could be a social salve for a city with rising crime rates, increasingly visible poverty, and deepening class divisions. While many factors (public health, the psychological need for parks, and property values) would remain the same, the changing social conversation showed how ideas of public space were transforming, in rhetoric if not reality.
