The Everyday Food Practices Of Community-Dwelling Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender (Lgbt) Older Adults, Nevin Cohen, Kristen Cribbs

Publications and Research

Malnutrition during old age is a significant public health issue. Prevailing behavioral and structural senior malnutrition interventions have had marginal success, largely failing to reflect the realities of people's daily lives. This novel study employed Social Practice Theory (SPT) to explore the food practices of an under-researched, yet highly vulnerable, segment of the older adult population—Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) seniors. Four focus groups were conducted with 31 older adult clients and volunteers at a national LGBT social service and advocacy organization. Findings revealed that food practices—far from being mere expressions of individuals' choices or immutable habits—are entities composed …

Agro Sí, Mina No: Explaining The Onset Of Protest Surrounding Mining Projects In Peru, Jhader Aguad May 2017

Agro Sí, Mina No: Explaining The Onset Of Protest Surrounding Mining Projects In Peru, Jhader Aguad

Political Science Honors Projects

Peru has witnessed an increase in protest activity over the past decade, seemingly related to natural resource extraction. Yet protests were more prevalent in some provinces than others. What explains this variation? I hypothesize that a mining company's announcement of the creation or advancement of a project has a greater effect on the likelihood and frequency of protest if local people rely more on agriculture. Analyzing an original dataset on Peruvian protests between 2011 and 2015, I find the reverse: Protests are less prevalent when mining projects occur in agricultural provinces, suggesting challenges to collective action in rural areas in …

Regional Industry Analysis: An Approach For Economies Large And Smaller, Susan G. Mason, Pengyu Zhu, Jon Van Dyke

Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Interest in cluster analysis for economic development in regions has been significant over the years. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of a community’s industry clusters or economic agglomerations can provide regions with resilience to economic changes. Large and smaller economies that are able to identify their industry clusters and know their competitive strengths and weaknesses may be more adaptable and able to thwart the negative effects of economic change. One example of the value of knowing about the strengths and weaknesses of an economy and the potential to shift to new areas of production and service in a local economy …

Impacts Of Thermal Time On Land Surface Phenology In Urban Areas, Cole Krehbiel, Xiaoyang Zhang, Geoffrey Henebry May 2017

Impacts Of Thermal Time On Land Surface Phenology In Urban Areas, Cole Krehbiel, Xiaoyang Zhang, Geoffrey Henebry

GSCE Faculty Publications

Urban areas alter local atmospheric conditions by modifying surface albedo and consequently the surface radiation and energy balances, releasing waste heat from anthropogenic uses, and increasing atmospheric aerosols, all of which combine to increase temperatures in cities, especially overnight, compared with surrounding rural areas, resulting in a phenomenon called the “urban heat island" effect. Recent rapid urbanization of the planet has generated calls for remote sensing research related to the impacts of urban areas and urbanization on the natural environment. Spatially extensive, high spatial resolution data products are needed to capture phenological patterns in regions with heterogeneous land cover and …

Examination Of The Potential Of Terrestrial Laser Scanning And Structure-From-Motion Photogrammetry For Rapid Nondestructive Field Measurement Of Grass Biomass, Sam D. Cooper, David P. Roy, Crystal B. Schaaf, Ian Paynter

GSCE Faculty Publications

Above ground biomass (AGB) is a parameter commonly used for assessment of grassland systems. Destructive AGB measurements, although accurate, are time consuming and are not easily undertaken on a repeat basis or over large areas. Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) are two technologies that have the potential to yield precise 3D structural measurements of vegetation quite rapidly. Recent advances have led to the successful application of TLS and SfM in woody biomass estimation, but application in natural grassland systems remains largely untested. The potential of these techniques for AGB estimation is examined considering 11 grass plots with …

No. 10: The Hungry Cities Food Purchases Matrix: A Measure Of Urban Household Food Security And Food System Interactions, Jonathan Crush, Cameron Mccordic May 2017

No. 10: The Hungry Cities Food Purchases Matrix: A Measure Of Urban Household Food Security And Food System Interactions, Jonathan Crush, Cameron Mccordic

Hungry Cities Partnership

Recent theoretical work has suggested that urban food security is the result of food system interactions. This work highlights the challenge of assessing household-level food insecurity and relating it to the broader food system. One priority is to develop food security metrics that incorporate household interactions with the food system retail environment. The Hungry Cities Food Purchases Matrix (HCFPM) is one such metric that has been developed for situating household food sourcing behaviour within the urban food system. The matrix has been successfully administered in a number of cities in the Global South by the Hungry Cities Partnership. This paper …

Geospatial Distribution And Population Substructure Of Subgroups Of Us Ethnic Minorities: Implications For Perpetuation Of Health Disparities And Paucity Of Precision Medicine, Hasan Jackson, Fatimah L.C. Jackson

Journal of Family Strengths

Substructure due to familial-associated divisions exists in all large populations. Geographical heterogeneity in US ethnic minorities is a function of historical, social, political, and economic factors overlaying regional geographical biodiversity. Using geospatial, historical, demographic, genetic, and epidemiological databases, we identify 40 US microethnic isolates across the US, the “minorities within ethnic minorities” and locate their geospatial distributions within the US. Key components of the environment relevant to health disparities are identified and elaborated in terms of their impact on genomics. US ethnic minority microethnic isolates often have distinct genetic and social histories from the US ethnic majority that put these …

Infância: A Brazilian Suite In Three Movements For Jazz Orchestra, Cassio Fernando Barbosa Vianna May 2017

Infância: A Brazilian Suite In Three Movements For Jazz Orchestra, Cassio Fernando Barbosa Vianna

Dissertations

Infância: A Brazilian Suite in Three Movements for Jazz Orchestra is an original music composition in which I blend a variety of Brazilian music elements with the traditional jazz big band style. American jazz and Brazilian popular music share similar African and European roots, but it was only in the 1940s that Americans became aware of the music coming from Brazil, through the work of Brazilian singer Carmen Miranda, who starred in many Hollywood movies and Broadway shows, performing songs by some of the greatest Brazilian composers of the time. Later in the 1960s, with the arrival of bossa nova …

Off The Grid, Matthew Owen Buffington May 2017

Off The Grid, Matthew Owen Buffington

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Off the Grid explores the messy relationship between public and private perceptions of our urban spaces, especially the tensions created when lived experience runs up against the physical and conceptual networks of cities: street grids, construction tape, and property lines. Incorporating different modes of spatial representation, from cartographic diagrams to isometric illustrations and Renaissance perspectives, this exhibition examines the role drawing plays in how we conceptualize the divisions and definitions of everyday space. The drawings engage the often overlooked detritus of city life, from layers of old graffiti to overgrown dirt piles and unmoored electrical wiring, that complicate our understanding …

The Spatial Ordering Of Nabataea: An Integrated Analysis Of The Geography, Architecture, And Morphology Of Nabataean Petra, Christopher Clifton Angel

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Nabataean city of Petra is well known for its sandstone architecture and rock-hewn funerary landscape. Over the last few decades, numerous studies examined their history, culture, art, and architecture. The few studies that assessed the urban space of Petra focused on the functional properties of individual architectural forms and their nominal placement within the overall landscape. This study focused on the spatial configurations of architecture as relational to the dynamics of Nabataean politics and ritual where shifts in social order manifested similar shifts in spatial order which in turn produced and reproduced forms of social order. The production of …
