Poe’S Gothic Soul In Metzengerstein: An Invitation To Look Inside, Elizabeth C. Peek May 2017

Poe’S Gothic Soul In Metzengerstein: An Invitation To Look Inside, Elizabeth C. Peek

BYU English Symposium

The following paper examines Poe’s affair with German tradition, particularly gothic and romantic writing, through an analysis of his short story “Metzengerstein.” This short story is not only rich with the conventions of gothic fiction, but also rings with an autobiographical tone. The added piece of Poe himself in this text implies his own gothic origins. I argue that Poe was a natural romantic, with the purpose of bringing his own terror to a larger audience. The German gloom in “Metzengerstein” was authentic, not an imitation. I come to the conclusion that Poe’s production of literary horror—in the face of …

Escherichia Coli As A Water Quality Indicator Organism: A Case For Responsive, Science-Based Policy, Sarah M. Mclarnan May 2017

Escherichia Coli As A Water Quality Indicator Organism: A Case For Responsive, Science-Based Policy, Sarah M. Mclarnan

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Water quality indicator organisms such as E. coli are used in the monitoring of recreational waterbodies to indicate the presence of fecal contamination. In 2009, a 1.5-mile stretch of Plum Creek in Stearns County, MN was classified by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency as impaired due to high levels of E. coli. Citizen science to investigate the source of this contamination began in 2014 and with the addition of student research from CSB/SJU in 2016. This thesis presents results of the 2016 study, supplemented by summary of Minnesota water quality policy and recent research on indicator organisms. The 2016 …

Running Comes Before Winning: Explaining The Gender Differential In State Legislatures, Marissa Piccolo May 2017

Running Comes Before Winning: Explaining The Gender Differential In State Legislatures, Marissa Piccolo

University Scholar Projects

What factors influence the likelihood that a woman runs for, wins, and holds political office across the country? Is it easier to explain why a woman runs in, than that she ultimately represents, a certain district? I compare a series of state-level and district-level independent variables and relate them to two different dependent variables: that a woman ran for a district seat, and that a woman represents a district. I explore what, and how much, political geography and contextual factors can explain. My preliminary findings show that it is easier to explain the probability that a woman runs, than that …

Revolutionary Rooms, Briana J. Fountain May 2017

Revolutionary Rooms, Briana J. Fountain

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Residence Halls are a social center on college campuses. The common spaces within a residence hall are a space for informal collectivism. However, they have become increasingly task specific and redundant. How do social constructs influence design? Should common spaces within the residence hall typology influence the design of the entire domicile? This thesis develops a methodology that prioritizes sociospatial relationships in the design of residence halls. This was accomplished through the exploration of college culture, socio-spatial relationships, and notions from sister typologies.

Occupational Injustice: Women's Education In Afghanistan, Victoria Mings May 2017

Occupational Injustice: Women's Education In Afghanistan, Victoria Mings

Honors Theses

The country of Afghanistan has had a turbulent political, economic, and social climate throughout the recent past. Instability throughout the country has had dramatic impacts on all aspects of its citizens’ lives. One especially prevalent factor that has been affected is the education of women. Receiving an education is an example of an occupation, which is any task or experience an individual finds meaningful. The inhibition of an individual’s ability to participate in valued occupations is called occupational injustice. Through an in-depth literature review, an online review of charitable organizations that promote education for women and girls in Afghanistan, and …

[Un]Building The Rural: The Strategic Subtraction Of Sidney, Nebraska, Caitlin E. Tangeman May 2017

[Un]Building The Rural: The Strategic Subtraction Of Sidney, Nebraska, Caitlin E. Tangeman

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

This thesis focuses on the decline of rural communities and how rural decline might be addressed through design.

Rural decline is a phenomenon affecting rural territories around the globe, including the Great Plains. Rural decline has been caused by a number of factors, perhaps the most persistent being the reliance on an economy that is not diversified. In the Great Plains, agriculture is typically the main source of economic income, with a significant portion of the region’s counties depending on agriculture. Mechanization of agriculture through increased technology has eliminated many jobs in the agriculture industry, since higher yields can be …

Conrad's Pronoun Usage As A Stylistic Marker And Its Relation To His Density Of Text And Themes, Jennifer K. Onishi May 2017

Conrad's Pronoun Usage As A Stylistic Marker And Its Relation To His Density Of Text And Themes, Jennifer K. Onishi

English Department Theses

In this thesis I perform a close examination of Conrad’s use of pronouns. Before this data is related, a brief overview of Conrad’s linguistic history and the history of his criticism is presented. This overview allows for the data to be placed in the context of his linguistic interference. It also lays out what aspects of Conrad’s language have already been explored. Pronouns are analyzed by word, type, and distance from the referent. The results of this study are then combined with statistical data from previous studies of Conrad’s grammar and linguistics. This combined data is used to explain one …

International Business Guide To Peru, Mark Kingsmore May 2017

International Business Guide To Peru, Mark Kingsmore

Senior Theses

Every study abroad adventure is unique, exciting, and scary in its own way. When I chose to study abroad in Peru, I was selecting a university that had a brand new partnership with USC and no older students to give me advice. I embraced the opportunity to be a trailblazer to a new school instead of walking a path that had been walked hundreds of times before, but I still felt nervous at times that I didn’t have the same information as my peers going to universities with more established partnerships. As a junior at the International Business student meet …

From Congregations To Congress: The Impact Of Religion In The 114th Congress, Emily Mildred Cottle May 2017

From Congregations To Congress: The Impact Of Religion In The 114th Congress, Emily Mildred Cottle

Honors Theses

The impact of religion on congressional politics is a question that is asked frequently, yet most answers I have found are, in my opinion, inadequate in accurately evaluating such an impact. This project has shown the influence that religion has on members of the House of Representatives through religion's effect on cosponsorship patterns. I have shown that both members' denominational affiliation and their religious salience are significant across multiple legislative categories. In this thesis I have redefined the measurement of religion when considering its impact on congressional politics and broadened the scope of the question. Whereas researchers previously sought to …

Patterns And Impacts Of Urban Stream Burial And The Potential For Stream Daylighting In Portland, Oregon, Ella Weil May 2017

Patterns And Impacts Of Urban Stream Burial And The Potential For Stream Daylighting In Portland, Oregon, Ella Weil

University Honors Theses

Over the last 150 years, many urban areas have seen streams disappear underground into sewer systems and pipes. Stream burial, the rerouting of open channels to pipes and culverts, has a strong positive correlation with urban development. Patterns of development contributing to stream burial include the building of freeways, roads, sewer infrastructure, and residential housing. This study uses a combination of archival analysis, spatial analysis, and statistical methods to determine the patterns and impacts of stream burial in Portland, Oregon. Urban stream deserts have been identified in many metropolitan areas and can be defined as areas with dense urban development …
