Evolution Of Mammalian Migrations For Refuge, Breeding, And Food, Gitanjali E. Gnanadesikan, William D. Pearse, Allison K. Shaw
Biology Faculty Publications
Many organisms migrate between distinct habitats, exploiting variable resources while profoundly affecting ecosystem services, disease spread, and human welfare. However, the very characteristics that make migration captivating and significant also make it difficult to study, and we lack a comprehensive understanding of which species migrate and why. Here we show that, among mammals, migration is concentrated within Cetacea and Artiodactyla but also diffusely spread throughout the class (found in 12 of 27 orders). We synthesize the many ecological drivers of round-trip migration into three types of movement—between breeding and foraging sites, between breeding and refuge sites, and continuous tracking of …

Biological Attenuation Of Arsenic And Iron In A Continuous Flow Bioreactor Treating Acid Mine Drainage (Amd), L Fernandez-Rojo, M Héry, P Le Pape, C Braungardt, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Passive water treatments based on biological attenuation can be effective for arsenic-rich acid mine drainage (AMD). However, the key factors driving the biological processes involved in this attenuation are not well-known. Here, the efficiency of arsenic (As) removal was investigated in a bench-scale continuous flow channel bioreactor treating As-rich AMD (~30-40 mg L-1). In this bioreactor, As removal proceeds via the formation of biogenic precipitates consisting of iron- and arsenic-rich mineral phases encrusting a microbial biofilm. Ferrous iron (Fe(II)) oxidation and iron (Fe) and arsenic removal rates were monitored at two different water heights (4 and 25 mm) and with/without …
Genesis Of Schlottenkarren On The Avon Peninsula Of Nova Scotia (Canada) With Implications For The Geochronology Of Evaporite Karsts And Caves Of Atlantic Canada, Max Moseley
International Journal of Speleology
Exposed schlottenkarren karst terrains developed on gypsum-anhydrite evaporites in the Canadian Maritime provinces might be post-Glacial landscape features (formed on glacially-denuded rocks after they are uncovered by progressive erosion of overlying glacial tills) or exhumed pre-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) morphologies (filled with glacial till and revealed by erosion of the tills). In this paper the hydrological conditions necessary for the formation of schlottenkarren, the speleogenetic processes involved and their chronology are reconsidered and reinterpreted. It is proposed that they are essentially pre-LGM features which have survived from the Wisconsinan. It is concluded that the degree of glacial scouring and denudation …

Classification Methods In Context At Theological Libraries: A Case Study, Chloe G. Noland
Classification Methods In Context At Theological Libraries: A Case Study, Chloe G. Noland
School of Information Student Research Journal
This case study explores issues of interoperability and shared collection management between two libraries – one community and one academic – located within the American Jewish University (AJU). AJU’s choice to use two separate classification systems, Library of Congress and Elazar, respectively, provides a necessary separation of academic and religious context, but limits record access between the two collections. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following core research question: is consolidation into one classification scheme both a realistic and helpful solution for increased interoperability? Examining the history, patron needs, and principles of arrangement in both systems provided further insights …

Magie, Terre Et Cri. Les Resémantisations Politiques De L’Œuvre D’Antoni Tàpies Sous Le Franquisme., Claudia Grego
Artl@s Bulletin

Achieving Clinical Learning Outcomes In A Community/Public Health Nursing Course Through An International Immersion Experience, Brandy E. Strahan
Achieving Clinical Learning Outcomes In A Community/Public Health Nursing Course Through An International Immersion Experience, Brandy E. Strahan
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
International clinical immersion experiences are valuable in that students are exposed to diverse cultures and ways of living, but these experiences can also provide an unconventional setting for clinical learning and the opportunity for culturally congruent care. Research has shown international immersion experiences to be beneficial in providing students comparison of U.S. health care systems to international systems, collaborate and form symbiotic partnerships with other institutions and providers, and share knowledge related to specific healthcare disparities. These experiences also enhance professional and personal development, enrich the understanding of healthcare concepts, and validate global citizenship. Clearly, international immersion experiences offer valid …

Family Emotional Literacy: A Critical Education Curriculum For Mental Health Promotion, Anna L. Dinallo
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
This narrative study documents the experiences of seven Latina community educators through focus groups, interviews, and artifact data. Given the stigma of mental health (Bayer, 2005), a lack of culturally centered emotional curriculums (Boler, 1997; Boler & Zembylas, 2003) which are removed from structural oppression (Collins, 2002,1989; Crenshaw, 1991, 1993; hooks, 2014), educators, parents, and communities are in need of mental health promotion tools. According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA, 2015), approximately 70 million Americans annually are diagnosed with mental health issues that disable daily functioning. More relevant to the study population was the loss of three middle school-aged …

From Shark Finning To Shark Fishing: A Strategy For The U.S. & Eu To Combat Shark Finning In China & Hong Kong, Jeremy Iloulian
Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum
Globally, the shark population is under extreme stress, primarily due to the rise of China and a growing middle class with a taste for a cultural dish: shark fin soup. Sharks play an important ecologic role and can be extremely beneficial to the local economy. They can also be an important food source for people if harvested sustainably and not in a manner that challenges the morality of humans’ relationship with the ocean; something the current shark finning practices do. Approaches to sustainable shark fishing at the international and domestic level have met some success. Even so, China and Hong …

Bioconcentration Factor (Bcf) And Translocation Factor (Tf)Of Heavy Metals In Mangrove Trees Of Blanakan Fish Farm, Noverita Dian Takarina, Tjiong Giok Pin
Makara Journal of Science
In the mangrovesof Blanakan, Indonesia, silvofishery practices may play arole in maintaining the environmental quality of ponds. Mangroves are known as pollutant traps since their root systems absorb and accumulate materials. Heavy metals are pollutants that often contaminate aquatic environment like ponds. The bioconcentration factor can be used to evaluate the content of heavy metals in organisms, while the translocation factor can be used to measure the amount of heavy metals transferred form one organ to another. The aim of this study was to determine the bioconcentration factor and the translocation factor of heavy metals (Pb, Cu,andZn) in mangrovetrees (Avicennia …
The Profane Ear: Regimes Of Aural Discipline In Paule Marshall’S The Fisher King, Petal Samuel
The Profane Ear: Regimes Of Aural Discipline In Paule Marshall’S The Fisher King, Petal Samuel
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
In this article, I highlight the sonic disciplinary regimes that form the backdrop of Paule Marshall’s The Fisher King. Marshall’s final novel chronicles the climax of a generations-long antagonism within a black diasporic family that coalesces around one character’s, Sonny-Rett’s, career as a jazz musician. Sonny-Rett’s exceptional musical talent renders him the target of overlapping regimes of domestic and state regulation and discipline. His alienation from his communities follows the condemnation of jazz in the interwar period as too obscene, flagrant, and undisciplined to have a place in national culture in both the United States and France. By examining …

"Threads Thin To The Point Of Invisibility, Yet Strong As Ropes" : Afrofuturistic Diaspora In Paule Marshall’S Praisesong For The Widow, Janelle Rodriques
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
Praisesong for the Widow (1984) tells the story of African-American Avey Johnson’s arrival in Grenada, having abandoned an opulent Caribbean cruise, and her sudden encounter with the local “excursion” on nearby Carriacou. Having experienced physical and psychological unease even before this trip she finds that, in attempting to return “home” to her comfortable life in New York, she discovers a new home, that within the transatlantic African diaspora. Ostensibly, Praisesong is a story of a woman past middle age “rediscovering herself” against the backdrop of an exotic Caribbean tourist imaginary, but Avey comes to an understanding not only of herself …

Tangible Opportunities: Designing Material Studies And Toolkits For School-Aged Children, Bang Jeon Lee
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Touching is one of the best ways humans to communicate with the world around them. For many decades, a tactile learning approach has been applied in child education as one of the most effective learning methods to maximise children’s learning ability. However, there are few approaches and toolkits that enhance tactile material study on education for school-aged children. This study introduces and demonstrates different approaches of material study with different age groups of young people. It presents the benefits, implementation and challenges of the material study in children’s education. The aims are three-fold: 1) to stimulate children’s interest in and …

An Experimental Approach For The Inclusion Of The Experiential Aspects Of Lighting Through The Design Process Of Atmospheric Luminaires, Natalia Triantafylli, Spyros Bofylatos
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper, based on the capacity of light to form the material area around it, seeks to understand the possibilities towards the implementation of light in design, as an empirical phenomenon. Aiming to extend the concept of atmospheric luminaires and to support their design, a design framework in the form of design tool format is proposed. By understanding the experiential nature of a luminous atmosphere, it becomes clear that its interpretation is personal and subjective and thus the design approach should not be seen as problem solving but as an opportunity for creation and experimentation. The design approach is proposed, …
Journeying Home: Toward A Feminist Perspective On Pilgrimage, Lesley D. Harman
Journeying Home: Toward A Feminist Perspective On Pilgrimage, Lesley D. Harman
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The archetypal feminine has earthy, creative, visceral, emotional and spiritual connotations suggestive of women’s quest for home. I wish to explore the meaning of home within the landscapes of the sacred geography of the soul, invoking the sacredness of place, the meaning of place, and the emotion of place. Findings from a seven-year autoethnographical study of women journeying home to islands in the Thousand Islands, a border region located on the St. Lawrence River between Ontario Canada and upstate New York, demonstrate that these themes figure deeply in the life decisions made by the women studied. ‘The River’ is experienced …

Revisiting Deliverance: The Sunbelt South, The 1970s Masculinity Crisis, And The Emergence Of The Redneck Nightmare Genre, Isabel Machado
Study the South
Is Deliverance a story about survivalism? An ecological cautionary tale? An allegory of the rise of the Sunbelt? A thinly veiled homoerotic fantasy? Since its release, the film has provoked passionate critiques, inspired different analyses, and has become a cult phenomenon. The imagery, stereotypes, and symbols produced by the film still inform popular perceptions of the US South, even by those who have never actually watched it. Readings of Deliverance have tended to privilege one particular interpretation, failing to fully grasp its relevance. The movie is a rich cultural text that provides historians with multiple ways to analyze the South, …

Awareness And Use Of Electronic Resources In University Libraries: A Case Study Of University For Development Studies Library, Franklina Adjoa Yebowaah Ms, Florence Dedzoe Dzokotoe Plockey Mrs
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Academic libraries are hub of knowledge and hence are considered as integral parts of academic life. Academic libraries have been in existence for over 500 years and are still very useful today to all educational institutions. The advent of Information and Communication Technology has led to the use of electronic resources in libraries. However, empirical studies have shown that the use of these resources by faculty members is very low. The objective of this study therefore, was to examine the use of electronic resources by lecturers of the University for Development Studies, Wa campus. Primary data were collected from 80 …
Identity And Community In Rural Higher Education: Creating New Pathways To Women's Leadership In Oaxaca, Mexico, Amanda Marie Elder
Identity And Community In Rural Higher Education: Creating New Pathways To Women's Leadership In Oaxaca, Mexico, Amanda Marie Elder
Dissertations and Theses
The emergence of higher education opportunities in rural areas of Mexico such as throughout the state of Oaxaca has opened new opportunities for young women's professional development and new individual and community identities. I explore tensions between the collective imaginary of rural Mexico and rural women's emerging sense of independence and self-determination in light of higher education's expanding opportunities. Educational opportunities lead to community formation around commonality of experience in addition to ascribed community relationships and roles. I situate this analysis within the context of the Universidad Tecnológica de los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca (UT), a small university in San …

Nothing To Write Home About: Aphorisms Against Actuality, Daniel Kissinger, Maisha Manson
Proceedings from the Document Academy
We ask the reader to consider what the claiming of home and home-ness means. For you, for each of us, for our nation. We jump between different documents and documentations of what it means to be, to make, to keep, to establish, to live at home. We look, particularly, to the aphorisms that collect around the sense and feeling of home, and home-ness. We posit counter-documents from historical archives to these structures of feeling which function to make (some of) us feel “at home,” or at least a certain way, while pushing out those who are marked as unwanted, who …

Photo Synthesis: The Expatriate Family Album As Historiography, Kamayani Sharma Ms
Proceedings from the Document Academy
I want to look at the expatriate family album as a site of history-writing.
Through an examination of three photographs from my childhood in West Asia, I try to think about the idea of historical space and time through the visual narratives available to me of my own family.
This essay will be an exploration of the way in which nostalgia for a personal past gets imbricated within the shared experience of a bygone cultural moment.
I am interested in how an encounter with visual material from private archives initiates memory work and how these traces from the past can …
