Why Collective Identity Matters: Constructivism And The Absence Of Asean’S Role In The Rohingya Crisis, Mohamad Rosyidin
Why Collective Identity Matters: Constructivism And The Absence Of Asean’S Role In The Rohingya Crisis, Mohamad Rosyidin
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The debate over the gap between theory and practice in international relations has been neglected by the vast majority of scholars. This paper is aimed to examine whether or not constructivist consideration has a place within ASEAN policy-making process regarding the Rohingya crisis. The absence of ASEAN’s role in managing Rohingya’s refugee crisis post-sectarian conflict in Myanmar has raised criticism on its effectiveness in dealing with regional problems. Despite the fact that ASEAN has already had a number of human rights instruments such as the ASEAN Charter, ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights and ASEAN Declaration of Human Rights, the …

International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
Following the chronological analysis of Christian pilgrimages over the course of around 2,000 years of existence, we find that there have been swings in their level of popularity: strong whenever the ruling classes (whether religious or civil) protect the sanctuaries most in demand; with declines occurring whenever opinion makers manage to turn leadership against participation in pilgrimages.
The paper analyses how religious tourism was influenced by two dictatorships: a fascist one in a western European country, Portugal (1928-1974) and a communist one in a central European country, Slovakia (1948-1989) – at that time part of Czechoslovakia. In the first case …

Sacral Heritage In Cultural And Geographical Trans-Boundary Space Of Europe, Tomasz Duda
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
Boundary zones are areas of mutual penetration of social, economic and cultural elements. They are conveyor belts of some kind, carriers of information, thoughts, actions, also in the context of broadly understood cultural heritage (including faith and religion). What is important - such regions are the clear nodal points (or even zones), focusing and targeting (or blocking) the transfer of many ideological, religious and cultural elements, often different from each other.
The purpose of this article is to show the diversity of religious heritage in the area of influence of several cultures, faiths and religions, and also an attempt to …
Consumption Of Zamzam Water As A Natural Health Medicine For Visitors Attending Pilgrimage In Makkah, Tariq H. M. Elhadary, Razaq Raj
Consumption Of Zamzam Water As A Natural Health Medicine For Visitors Attending Pilgrimage In Makkah, Tariq H. M. Elhadary, Razaq Raj
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
The Zam Zam is the name of the well in city of Makkah that provides water to visitors who are attending pilgrimage. Over the last 4500 years billions of people have drunk water from the well of Zam Zam. During the annual Hajj festival pilgrims drink and wash themselves with the Zam Zam. The Quraan has stated in verse 21:30 ‘and we have made of water everything living, will they not then believe’. It is because of its religious character that Zamzam has a unique identification: the most sacred and miraculous water well in the history of Islam if not …

The Italian Museums Of Shrines. Specificities And Relations With Pilgrimage, Lorenzo Bagnoli, Rita Capurro
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
Italy is a country very rich of Shrines in all her regions, destinations of more or less important local pilgrimages. A lot of them have a specific museum deeply connected with the sacred place and its history. The aim of this research is to verify in which way visiting one of those museums is part of the pilgrimage itself, and in which way it is possible to find a link between the religious identity of the pilgrims and the cultural content of the museum. A few case-studies, chosen among museums of little dimensions and representative of different Italian regions, will …

The Proliferation, Commercialization, And Secularization Of The Seven Gods Of Good Fortune Pilgrimages In Modern Japan, Daniel H. Olsen, Greg Wilkinson
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
Osaka’s Thirteen Buddha Pilgrimage is a route through the greater Osaka area to Buddhist temples. Thirteen Buddha pilgrimage routes have experienced growth in participation over the past few years. This new popularity has increased the number of thirteen Buddha pilgrimages routes. This proliferation in routes are a phenomenon, which deserves attention because pilgrimage participation is often used not only as an illustration of a specific religious practice but also a significant variable in the continuing discourse about Japan’s secularization (Reader 2012). This study investigates more specifically Osaka’s thirteen Buddha pilgrimage sites and how each has become a location for multiple …

Understanding Visitor Motivations To A Wayside Chapel In Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, Daniel H. Olsen
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
While academics that study religious tourism tend to focus on large-scale events and sites that attract thousands and millions of people, little has been written about small-scale sites that attract very few people but are still considered to be a part of religious tourism supply. This presentation focuses on a wayside chapel in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. Located on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) , this wayside chapel is visited by hundreds of travelers a year who are passing through Brandon. An analysis of guestbook comments over a number of years highlights some of the reasons why people …

Pilgrimage Motivations Of Motorbiking Vicars From Leeds Diocese, Ruth Dowson Rev.
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
The new Church of England Diocese of Leeds was instituted in April 2014. To mark this development, a group of motorcycling vicars began to meet regularly and undertake ‘rides out’, across the diocese and further afield. Through a series of semi-structured interviews and more informal conversations with the Biker Revs, including staying with them at religious destinations on two longer trips in 2016 and 2017, this research investigates their experiences and motivations for undertaking pilgrimage on motorbikes. As a basis for comparison, this paper utilizes Michalowski and Dubisch’s 2001 iconic ethnographic research on an American motorcycle pilgrimage, to analyse the …
Issues Facing Georgia's Reptiles And Amphibians And Recommendations For New Policies, Tyler Thigpen
Issues Facing Georgia's Reptiles And Amphibians And Recommendations For New Policies, Tyler Thigpen
Georgia Journal of Science
Georgia is home to an abundance of reptile and amphibian species. There are very few laws protecting the two taxa from competition and predation by exotic species, habitat loss and fragmentation, unregulated harvest, and collection for the food and pet trades. Limited life and natural history information is another reason for species declines. The existing laws protecting herpetofauna in the state of Georgia are not enforced and are open to broad interpretation. Special interest groups such as Partners for Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) and others lobby for laws to protect native reptiles and amphibians from leading factors of decline, …

Spatial Variability Of Co < Inf> 2 Uptake In Polygonal Tundra: Assessing Low-Frequency Disturbances In Eddy Covariance Flux Estimates, Norbert Pirk, Jakob Sievers, Jordan Mertes, Frans Jan W. Parmentier, Mikhail Mastepanov, Torben R. Christensen
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The large spatial variability in Arctic tundra complicates the representative assessment of CO2 budgets. Accurate measurements of these heterogeneous landscapes are, however, essential to understanding their vulnerability to climate change. We surveyed a polygonal tundra lowland on Svalbard with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that mapped ice-wedge morphology to complement eddy covariance (EC) flux measurements of CO2. The analysis of spectral distributions showed that conventional EC methods do not accurately capture the turbulent CO2 exchange with a spatially heterogeneous surface that typically features small flux magnitudes. Nonlocal (low-frequency) flux contributions were especially pronounced during snowmelt and introduced a large bias …
Multinational Research Collaboratives, Interaction Costs, And Time To Productivity: An Empirical Model To Support Success, Betty A. Rambur
Multinational Research Collaboratives, Interaction Costs, And Time To Productivity: An Empirical Model To Support Success, Betty A. Rambur
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose:
To illuminate promising practices in multinational research collaboratives that may guide research initiatives that range from interprofessional, to multi-site, to international.
Research to effectively address complex global problems may require the composition of equally complex, diverse, multidisciplinary research teams. Indeed, collaboration among professions, disciplines, institutions, and nations may offer a means to address society’s most vexing problems. Although intuitively attractive, collaboration also creates intricate interplays of personal and scientific values, norms and expectations. This research was undertaken to better understand promising practices in the potentially most complicated research collaboratives, those that span nations.
Methods:
Because individuals in different regions …

Potential Impacts Of Accelerated Sea-Level Rise And Hurricane-Induced Storm Surge In Western Pasco County, Florida, Kittiya Harris
Potential Impacts Of Accelerated Sea-Level Rise And Hurricane-Induced Storm Surge In Western Pasco County, Florida, Kittiya Harris
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sea levels have risen approximately 20 cm since the beginning of the 20th century and more than 3 cm in the past 20 years, suggesting that global sea level rise is accelerating. As sea levels continue to rise and storms become more intense, coastal property and populations become more susceptible to damage. Florida is especially vulnerable to hurricane-induced storm surge (HSS) and the onset of accelerated sea-level rise (ASLR) due to its extensive coastline and high population density along the coast. The main purpose of this research is to assess the potential economic impacts of ASLR and HSS for two …
Space-Time Transportation System Modelling: From Traveler’S Characteristics To The Network Design Problem, Mohsen Parsafard
Space-Time Transportation System Modelling: From Traveler’S Characteristics To The Network Design Problem, Mohsen Parsafard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traditional network design problems only consider the long-term stationary travel patterns (e.g., fixed OD demand) and short-term variations of human mobility are ignored. This study aims to integrate human mobility characteristics and travel patterns into network design problems using a space-time network structure. Emerging technologies such as location-based social network platforms provide a unique opportunity for understanding human mobility patterns that can lead to advanced modeling techniques. To reach our goal, at first multimodal network design problems are investigated by considering safety and flow interactions between different modes of transport. We develop a network reconstruction method to expand a single-modal …

Spatial Analysis Of Tornado Warning System Understanding And Relationship With Tornado Occurrence, Chesnea A. Skeen
Spatial Analysis Of Tornado Warning System Understanding And Relationship With Tornado Occurrence, Chesnea A. Skeen
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Tornadoes present a significant threat to life and property. The National Weather Service watch and warning system warns the public of tornadoes. If these warnings are not heeded by the public, the potential fatalities and destruction of property cannot be minimized. Thus, to prevent further loss of life and property, it is necessary to understand how the public understands the watch and warning system, as well as how they react. This paper aims to understand the correlation between understanding of watches and warnings and the occurrence of tornadoes, as well as how understanding varies spatially. Survey data were collected from …
Gerrymandering (Almost) Gone Wild: How The Supreme Court Saved Independent Redistricting Reform, Michael Woods
Gerrymandering (Almost) Gone Wild: How The Supreme Court Saved Independent Redistricting Reform, Michael Woods
Florida Law Review
This Comment discusses how the Arizona State Legislature majority reached its decision to uphold independent redistricting commissions, addresses issues that several of the dissenters raised, and analyzes how the decision will impact partisan gerrymandering and future redistricting reform. Part I briefly overviews reapportionment, gerrymandering, and redistricting reform. Part II then examines Arizona State Legislature and provides the legal and political context for the nearly five-year debate over the AIRC. Finally, Part III explores potential legal and policy ramifications of the decision on the future of partisan gerrymandering and redistricting reform.
Supreme Disgorgement, Caprice L. Roberts
Supreme Disgorgement, Caprice L. Roberts
Florida Law Review
Disgorgement of a defendant’s wrongful gains is an ancient remedy. It applies across a spectrum of contexts—from trademark infringement to fiduciary duties, from common law to statutes, from public to private law. This remedy is not regarded as quintessential in American contract law, but that is changing. My earlier work, as cited by the Supreme Court, predicted this shift based upon a new rule in the Restatement (Third) of Restitution and Unjust Enrichment. The rule operationalizes disgorgement of profits for opportunistic breaches of contract. This new conceptualization of precedent authorizes a gain-based remedy that exceeds the compensation goals of contract …
Comparing Building Modeling Software To The Energy Record Of A Preexisting Structure, Nathan Lasley
Comparing Building Modeling Software To The Energy Record Of A Preexisting Structure, Nathan Lasley
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Buildings are complex systems - even "simple" residential structures. Many factors go into building energy consumption and the design to reduce it. Computer energy modeling allows the simultaneous consideration and balance of many of those variables. Computer models are only as good as the information provided however. Tools like blower door and duct blaster can be used to aid in verifying the model or to provide more information to build a better model. In order to verify of building computer energy simulation methods, the Western Kentucky University (WKU) Office of Sustainability located at 503 Regents Ave. in Bowling Green KY …

Re-Imagining Local Governance: The Landscape Of "Local" In Toronto, Alexandra Elizabeth Flynn
Re-Imagining Local Governance: The Landscape Of "Local" In Toronto, Alexandra Elizabeth Flynn
PhD Dissertations
In 1997, the Province of Ontario formed the City of Toronto, amalgamating one regional and six small municipalities into a single city government. This action altered the formal institutions of local governance, replacing what was once regional with a City Council meant to represent city-wide issues, and without providing a clear model for local or smaller-than-city decision-making. The purpose of this dissertation is to conceptualize the meaning of local governance within the City of Toronto as a result of the overlap of wards (as represented by councillors), community councils, business improvement areas and neighbourhood associations, each of which claim geographical …
Beyond Urban Versus Rural:, Dante J. Scala, Kenneth M. Johnson
Beyond Urban Versus Rural:, Dante J. Scala, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Dante Scala and Kenneth Johnson examine voting patterns over the last five presidential elections. They report that although rural voters and urban voters are often portrayed as polar opposites, their differences are best understood as a continuum, not a dichotomy. From the largest urban cores to the most remote rural counties, they found significant variations in voting. Hillary Clinton nearly matched Barack Obama’s 2012 performance in most urban areas. Clinton’s defeat was due, in part, to her failure to match the performance of recent Democratic Presidential nominees in less populated areas. Though many commentators argued that …

Up In Smoke: Conservation And Gender On Mount Kilimanjaro, Garret Nash, Greg Thompson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Initially, this project aimed to examine cultural factors influencing fuel sourcing habits around Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. In 2008, a study conducted by Prof. Jeffery Durrant of the BYU Geography Department found that the Chagga (an ethnic group which lives on the lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro) hold a negative opinion towards the National Park and its staff. Specifically, I wanted to know if giving locals an opportunity to experience the park as tourists would change these perceptions and behavior when it came to conservation. However, as research progressed, it became clear that there were deeply seeded issues related to gender …
