The Graphic Design Of Jason Moore, Jason Moore Dec 2017

The Graphic Design Of Jason Moore, Jason Moore

Professional Practices (ART 399)

Artist Statement

As a Graphic Designer the goal of most of my work is to relay information to the viewer. I try to insert as much of myself into each work that I design and draw influence from Designers such as Michael Schwab, Massimo Vignelli and David Carson. Using typography and illustration to convey emotion and personality.

My art evokes a light and airy mood through the use of minimal color, negative space and geometric shapes. The mood of my work is reflected by my personality, easy going and kind, the work is reacted to visually by the viewer in …

The Effects Of Outsourcing And Outward Fdi On Skill Structure In Slovenia: Evidence On Matched Firm-Employee Data, Mojca Lindič Dec 2017

The Effects Of Outsourcing And Outward Fdi On Skill Structure In Slovenia: Evidence On Matched Firm-Employee Data, Mojca Lindič

Economic and Business Review

This paper studies the effect of outsourcing and outward FDI on firms’ skill structure. Its main contributions consist of studying changes in the skill structure that can be associated with outsourcing and outward FDI to high- and low-income countries, and including a new dimension when defining skills, which also controls for occupational classification of workers. The analysis employs a matched employer-employee dataset for Slovenian manufacturing and service firms between 1997 and 2010. The results indicate that outward FDI to high- and low-income countries has a positive impact on the skill share in manufacturing firms. The results also show that in …

Exploring The Role Of Internationalization Knowledge In Fostering Strategic Renewal: A Dynamic Capabilities Perspective, Monica Riviere, Gabriele Suder, A. Erin Bass

Management Faculty Publications

Internationalization knowledge (IK) is important to successfully enter and develop competitive strategies abroad. Yet, how IK is advanced and improved across the multinational enterprise (MNE), and how this contributes to the MNE’s strategic renewal is less understood. This analysis is based on an in-depth case study of Microsoft International to explore how IK is advanced, improved, and integrated across the enterprise. Our findings suggest that IK plays a critical role in fostering strategic renewal of an MNE. More specifically, sensing, seizing, and transforming capabilities jointly provide the necessary basis that enable IK to facilitate strategic renewal. We contribute to the …

The Challenge Of Urban Design In Securing Post-Event Legacies Of Olympic Parks, Renata Sanchez, Stephen Essex Dec 2017

The Challenge Of Urban Design In Securing Post-Event Legacies Of Olympic Parks, Renata Sanchez, Stephen Essex

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Olympic Parks demand a very distinctive built environment in order to function for their primary purpose, namely to host major sporting competitions. These spaces, however, require substantial reconfiguration in the post-event mode to ensure viable, mixed use and liveable places. This paper evaluates the challenges of transforming Olympic Parks, using evidence from four past hosts: Munich (1972), Sydney (2000), London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro (2016). The discussion raises questions about retaining the ceremonial focus of the Olympic Park and whether a more decentralised model might make the associated urban design and planning legacies more deliverable for future host cities.

So What?: Writing And Tutoring Intentionally, Cassidy Gummersall Dec 2017

So What?: Writing And Tutoring Intentionally, Cassidy Gummersall

Tutor's Column

In my first semester of tutoring, I have seen papers about forestry services, Rihanna as an emblem of dominance, the nutritional chemistry of an English muffin, NASA funding, and the endangered Peruvian vicugna. I have worked with students writing genres like persuasive research essays, personal narratives, lab reports, and even philosophy short-answer midterm responses. When confronted with papers that have requirements or subjects where I am far from an expert, I have learned to ask, “Why did you select this topic?” and “How would you want your audience to be changed by reading your paper?” These questions function to alleviate …

Dinoflagellate Cysts Track Eutrophication In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Andrea M. Price, Melissa M. Baustian, R. Eugene Turner, Nancy N. Rabalais, Gail L. Chmura

Faculty Publications

We examined organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts from one 210Pb-dated sediment core and 39 surface sediment samples from the northern Gulf of Mexico to determine the relationship between nutrient enrichment and cyst assemblages in this region characterized by oxygen deficiency. The core spans from 1962 to 1997 and its sampling location is directly influenced by the Mississippi River plume. Surface sediments were collected in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2014 and represent approximately 1 to 4 years of accumulation. A total of 57 cyst taxa were recorded, and four heterotrophic taxa in particular were found to increase in the top section (1986–1997) of …

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Climate change has already begun impacting economies and societies across the globe, and its impacts are expected to increase into the future. Adaptation to climate change is and will continue to be one of the greatest policy challenges facing the Canadian government. However, im- portant and much-needed work on understanding the future of climate change has not yet been completed. Gaps remain in the body of academic, government, and other policy-relevant publications. Specifically, there is a relative paucity of research done on the indirect impacts of climate change on Canada. These external impacts outside of Canada’s borders may have second-order …

Goat Boy Legend, Elise Teichert Dec 2017

Goat Boy Legend, Elise Teichert

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Back in Orangeville, a long time ago, there was a little baby who was abandoned by his parents on a goat farm. No one really knows why they left him, other than they didn’t want him. Must have been an ugly kid. The goat farmer found the boy but couldn’t take care of him, so he left him to live with the goats. The boy grew up with the goats but started changing as he got older. I don’t think he ever learned to speak, just make “baaaaaing” noises like the goats. He started to get really hairy, grow hooves …

Investigating Multiple Domains Of Household Livelihood Security: Insights From Urban Slums In Bangladesh, S Akter, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In this article, the authors construct indices of Household Livelihood Security (HLS) domains, namely, economic, food, health, and education securities and empowerment with data from 1,120 poor households in two urban settlements of Bangladesh. The authors then jointly identify domain-specific socioeconomic determinants employing a multivariate Tobit model. A quintile analysis of domains shows high levels of inequalities among these poor households. The HLS domains are significantly positively correlated, and a host of factors significantly influence individual HLS domain. Interventions targeted at improving education, provision of business training and building of land asset are suggested to improve livelihood security.

The Impact Of Culture On Hispanic Entrepreneurs As Mediated By Motivation, Challenge, And Success, Valerie V. Ballesteros

Theses & Dissertations

In the modern economic environment, demographic shifts in U.S. population resulting from changing immigration, changing economic policies and environments, and growing socioeconomic disparity, scholarly research examining the business behavior of specific groups and the impact of behavior on the broader marketplace is valuable and necessary. Hispanic entrepreneurs, when compared to both minority and non-minority business-owners, started and flourished in successful business ownership at a greater growth rate than any other group (Davila, Mora, & Zeitlin, 2014). Since the beginning of the 21st century, Hispanic entrepreneurs have become a measurable economic force. The cultural experience of the Hispanic entrepreneur is important …

Poverty Mapping Using Convolutional Neural Networks Trained On High And Medium Resolution Satellite Images, With An Application In Mexico, Boris Babenko, Jonathan Hersh, David Newhouse, Anusha Ramakrishnan, Tom Swartz

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Mapping the spatial distribution of poverty in developing countries remains an important and costly challenge. These “poverty maps” are key inputs for poverty targeting, public goods provision, political accountability, and impact evaluation, that are all the more important given the geographic dispersion of the remaining bottom billion severely poor individuals. In this paper we train Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to estimate poverty directly from high and medium resolution satellite images. We use both Planet and Digital Globe imagery with spatial resolutions of 3-5 m2 and 50 cm2 respectively, covering all 2 million km2 of Mexico. Benchmark poverty estimates come from …

Identifying Problems And Solutions In Changing State Legislation Regarding Licensed Clinical Social Workers Providing Private Independent Mental Health Services, Dianna Cooper-Bolinskey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

State regulated social work practice began in the 1960s; by the mid-1990s, all of the states within the United States regulated the profession through licensure. The purpose of licensure was ostensibly to protect the public and the profession; however, legislation defining social work practice varied vastly from state to state. The variation existed not only between states, but also within licensure categories with regard to the scope of practice of the social work profession. Licensed clinical social workers in some states could practice relatively independently, as they had the ability to diagnose, provide psychotherapy, and bill Medicaid, Medicare, and third …
