Measurement Of Commodity Price Risk: An Overview Of Brazilian Agricultural Markets, Daniel Henrique Dario Capitani, Fabio Mattos Jul 2017

Measurement Of Commodity Price Risk: An Overview Of Brazilian Agricultural Markets, Daniel Henrique Dario Capitani, Fabio Mattos

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

This study explores different procedures to estimate price risk in commodity markets. Focusing on Brazilian agricultural markets, the paper proposes to assess both dispersion and downside risk measures using five different approaches (volatility, coefficient of variation, lower partial moments, value at risk and conditional value at risk). Results suggest that some commodities have large price variability but small downside risk, while other commodities show small price variability and large downside risk. Thus, there is no single answer to the question of which commodity exhibits more price risk, but rather distinct answers depending on how risk is perceived by different individuals. …

Invest To Withstand The Test Of Time: Capital Planning For High-Impact Earthquakes, Jan Whittington Jul 2017

Invest To Withstand The Test Of Time: Capital Planning For High-Impact Earthquakes, Jan Whittington

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

Can people expect buildings and infrastructure to last, keeping their occupants sheltered from the elements, free to go about their business? The professionals who design facilities—as well as the taxpayers and entrepreneurs who fund them—make this assumption, but is this a safe assumption to make? Contemplate the effect of one extreme event—a magnitude 9.0 earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone of the Pacific coast—and it is easy to realize that this is not a safe assumption. Though seismic technology can be used to fortify structures against extreme events and land use plans can keep development out of harm’s way, the …

Geographical Aesthetics: Imagining Space, Staging Encounters, P Smith Jul 2017

Geographical Aesthetics: Imagining Space, Staging Encounters, P Smith

School of Art, Design and Architecture

‘Geographical Aesthetics’ is ambitious. It seeks to marshal twelve papers on disparate subjects and with contrasting methodological and analytical approaches, advocate a new aesthetics by articulating key provisional theoretical principles, possible projects and trajectories, while re-describing geography as an always at least partially aesthetic discipline. Where its editors Harriet Hawkins and Elizabeth Straughan’s task is trickiest is where they feel out continuities across longstanding controversies – “ethereal and precious” aesthetics as tending to the apolitical (it is hard to fit, say, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Erika Fischer-Lichte and Hans-Thies Lehmann into this description), polarities of sublime and picturesque, aspirations for relational and …

The Law Of Cyber Peace, Scott J. Shackelford Jul 2017

The Law Of Cyber Peace, Scott J. Shackelford

Chicago Journal of International Law

Scholars and policymakers are paying greater attention to the application of international law to the cause of enhancing global cybersecurity. The bulk of this research, though, has been focused on leveraging international humanitarian law to regulate the conduct of cyber warfare. Yet much of this work is largely theoretical, given how exceedingly rare it is for a cyber attack to cross the armed-attack threshold at which point the law of armed conflict is activated. Most of the cyber risk facing the public and private sectors lies in the arena of cybercrime and espionage. More scholars have been applying international law …

The Iconic One-Hit Wonder: The History And Reception Of Franz Biebl's Ave Maria, Matthew Oltman Jul 2017

The Iconic One-Hit Wonder: The History And Reception Of Franz Biebl's Ave Maria, Matthew Oltman

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Franz Biebl’s Ave Maria is one of the most well-known small-scale choral pieces written in the latter half of the twentieth century. Since its introduction to American choirs in 1970, it has become an important part of the standard choral repertoire and is often performed perennially, especially at Christmas. It was integral to the rise in popularity of Chanticleer, the American professional male chorus, and remains closely associated with the ensemble thanks to it being recorded and published in the United States under Chanticleer’s auspices. Despite these facts, very little has been written about the composer or his iconic setting …

What Do We Know About Location Affordability In U.S. Shrinking Cities?, Joanna Ganning, Jenna Rosie Tighe Jul 2017

What Do We Know About Location Affordability In U.S. Shrinking Cities?, Joanna Ganning, Jenna Rosie Tighe

TREC Final Reports

In late 2013, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) launched the Location Affordability Index (LAI) portal. Their dataset uses models to estimate typical amount households spend on housing and transportation at the block group level, and calculates “H + T Affordability,” the percent of household income spent on these items. In our previous research, we analyzed 81 shrinking cities to determine how location affordability differs across various neighborhoods. Our results suggest that households in declining neighborhoods, as compared to stable or redeveloping neighborhoods, face the greatest H + T affordability challenges in shrinking cities. Furthermore, in declining neighborhoods, …

Addressing Racism In Urban Agriculture: The Case For An Urban Agriculture Land Trust In Bridgeport, Connecticut, Chelsea Gazillo Jul 2017

Addressing Racism In Urban Agriculture: The Case For An Urban Agriculture Land Trust In Bridgeport, Connecticut, Chelsea Gazillo

Capstone Collection

Cities across the United States have started to adopt urban agriculture zoning ordinances which provide access to land and encourage food production in low-income black and brown communities. However, many cities fail to use an anti-racist lens in the creation and implementation of these policies. According to scholars and activists, anti-racist practices in urban agriculture zoning require that first, community organizations and policy makers co-create policy with black and brown communities and second, develop secure land tenure arrangements for urban agriculture. In this case study of the development of an urban agriculture zoning ordinance by the Bridgeport Connecticut Food Policy …

Nonmeteorological Influences On Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issuance: A Geographically Weighted Regression-Based Analysis Of County Warning Area Boundaries, Land Cover, And Demographic Variables, Megan L. White, J. Anthony Stallins Jul 2017

Nonmeteorological Influences On Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issuance: A Geographically Weighted Regression-Based Analysis Of County Warning Area Boundaries, Land Cover, And Demographic Variables, Megan L. White, J. Anthony Stallins

Geography Faculty Publications

Studies have shown that the spatial distribution of severe thunderstorm warnings demonstrates variation beyond what can be attributed to weather and climate alone. Investigating spatial patterns of these variations can provide insight into nonmeteorological factors that might lead forecasters to issue warnings. Geographically weighted regression was performed on a set of demographic and land cover descriptors to ascertain their relationships with National Weather Service (NWS) severe thunderstorm warning polygons issued by 36 NWS forecast offices in the central and southeastern United States from 2008 to 2015. County warning area (CWA) boundaries and cities were predominant sources of variability in warning …

Was There A Regular Provincia Africa In The Second Century?, Daniel J. Gargola Jul 2017

Was There A Regular Provincia Africa In The Second Century?, Daniel J. Gargola

History Faculty Publications

Scholars agree that Africa became a province after the destruction of Carthage in 146, but close examination of the evidence for the practice reveals that it is, at best, limited. Instead, the senate probably began to send magistrates to the region with any regularity at some uncertain point after the conclusion of the war against Jugurtha. This interpretation of the evidence brings Roman practice in Africa more into line with recent models of Roman imperialism in the second century, in which consuls and praetors were dispatched primarily to wage war, exert military pressure, or preserve Rome's position in an unstable …

Aeromagnetic And Spectral Expressions Of Rare Earth Element Deposits In Gallinas Mountains Area, Central New Mexico, Usa, Mo Li Jul 2017

Aeromagnetic And Spectral Expressions Of Rare Earth Element Deposits In Gallinas Mountains Area, Central New Mexico, Usa, Mo Li

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The Gallinas Mountains located in the conjunction of Lincoln County and Torrance County, New Mexico, USA are a series of alkaline volcanic rocks intruded into Permian sedimentary rocks. The Gallinas Mountains area is known to host fluorite and copper as veins containing bastnasite while hydrothermally altered rocks associated with iron oxides have been found in the area as well. In this study, multispectral band ratio method was used for surface mineral interpretation by processing satellite image, while aeromagnetic inversion method was applied using aeromagnetic data, digital elevation model and physical properties for 2-D subsurface structure modeling. Bastnasite has higher magnetic …

Evidence For Late Pliocene Deglacial Megafloods From Giant Sediment Waves In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Zexuan Wang Jul 2017

Evidence For Late Pliocene Deglacial Megafloods From Giant Sediment Waves In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Zexuan Wang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Laurentide Ice Sheet outburst floods to the Gulf of Mexico have been mainly documented based on deep-sea cores, especially the megafloods, only during the last several interglacial episodes in the late Pleistocene. The paleoclimatic significance of giant sedimentary structures developed under unconfined Froude-supercritical turbidity currents in subaqueous settings is considerably under-examined. This research extensively documents >20-km-wide and 200-m-thick Plio-Pleistocene giant sediment waves for the first time on the northern Gulf of Mexico continental slope using 3D seismic data, which show waveform morphology in unprecedented detail. The results suggest that such large-scale bedforms were formed under sheet-like unconfined Froudesupercritical turbidity currents …

Early “Neolithics” Of China: Variation And Evolutionary Implications, Shengqian Chen, Pei-Lin Yu Jul 2017

Early “Neolithics” Of China: Variation And Evolutionary Implications, Shengqian Chen, Pei-Lin Yu

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The growth and significance of scientific research into the origins of agriculture in China calls for fresh examination at scales large enough to facilitate explanation of cultural evolutionary processes. The Paleolithic to Neolithic transition (PNT) is not yet well-understood because most archaeological research on early agriculture cites data from the more conspicuous and common early Neolithic sites. In this, the first of two papers, we synthesize a broad range of early Neolithic archaeological data, including diagnostic artifacts, settlement patterns, site structure, and biological remains, to consider agriculture as a system-level adaptive phenomenon. Although farming by this period was already well-established …

At The Heart Of The Problem: Health In Johannesburg's Inner-City, Helen Rees, Sinead Delany-Moretlwe, Fiona Scorgie, Stanley Luchters, Matthew F. Chersich

Population Health, East Africa

Urban life in the twenty-first century is marked by numerous stresses and shocks, resulting from rapid urbanisation, frequent migration and crowding, massive unemployment, climate change, physical disasters, and disease outbreaks, among other challenges. This reality – according to the ‘100 Resilient Cities’ initiative of the Rockefeller Foundation – is why the concept of resilience is critical to a sustainable future: cities must learn to “survive and thrive, regardless of the challenge” [1]. In cities in the global South that face a heavy HIV burden, this health crisis is often inseparable from a wider set of interlinked social challenges, ranging from …

A Survey Of Global Impacts Of Climate Change: Replication, Survey Methods, And A Statistical Analysis, William D. Nordhaus, Andrew Moffat Jul 2017

A Survey Of Global Impacts Of Climate Change: Replication, Survey Methods, And A Statistical Analysis, William D. Nordhaus, Andrew Moffat

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The present study has two objectives. The first is a review of studies that estimate the global economic impacts of climate change using a systematic research synthesis (SRS). In this review, we attempt to replicate the impact estimates provided by Tol (2009, 2014) and find a large number of errors and estimates that could not be replicated. The study provides revised estimates for a total of 36 usable estimates from 27 studies. A second part of the study performs a statistical analysis. While the different specifications provide alternative estimates of the damage function, there were no large discrepancies among specifications. …

Sustainability Standards And Stakeholder Engagement: Lessons From Carbon Markets, Hans Rawhouser, Michael E. Cummings, Alfred Marcus

Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research

Stakeholders play an increasingly active role in private governance, including development of standards for measuring sustainability. Building on prior studies focused on standards and stakeholder engagement, we use an innovation management theoretical lens to compare stakeholder engagement and standards developed in two carbon markets: the Climate Action Reserve and the U.N.’s Clean Development Mechanism. We develop and test hypotheses regarding how different processes of stakeholder engagement in standard development affect the number, identity, and age of stakeholders involved, as well as the variation and quality of the resulting standards. In doing so, we contribute to the growing literature on stakeholder …

Financing Central Cities: The Economics Underlying Fiscal Strategy Options, Michael Wasylenko

Center for Policy Research

A consortium of Syracuse City and Onondaga County governments along with a number of local area non-profit organizations have recently organized a commission on Local Government Modernization for the Syracuse area. The Report makes three major recommendation to strengthen the local public sector in the Syracuse region: seek opportunities to share public services across local jurisdictions to reduce costs, adopt the Minneapolis region model for sharing revenues from new commercial and industrial development across localities, and work toward merging Syracuse City government with Onondaga County government. At the same time, current non-city residents would not have responsibility for the city …
