Haiti: Beauty On Edge, Jarvis Thanex Louis, Lisa Willey, Nate Cronuaer
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
During our visit in Haiti in January 2017, we conducted basic water quality testing using a YSI meter and an urban water testing kit. We performed multiple tests in a pond that is used for drinking, laundry, bathing, and watering animals in the remote mountain village of Mahotiere, located in the city of Thomazeau.
Further lab analysis of the samples includes:
Atomic absorbance spectroscopy of the Copper content of the plant material found growing along the edge of the pond
X Ray Fluorescence analysis of the sediment from pond using the bench top method (Thermo Niton XL3T), after the sediment …
Weak-Kneed Media And Festering Corruption In Nigeria, Musibau Olabamiji Oyebode Ph.D.
Weak-Kneed Media And Festering Corruption In Nigeria, Musibau Olabamiji Oyebode Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Characteristic greed, kleptomaniac behavior, and the impunity of Nigerian elites have become enemies of democratic growth in Nigeria. Corruption in Nigeria has become an issue of concern to scholarship. All domestic and international institutions, as well as legal frameworks put in place to check corruption continue to fail to yield measurable results. Festering corruption brings to the forefront the roles of the media in combating the menace. Using Down’s ‘issue-attention cycle’ as the theoretical lens, this paper undertakes an examination of critical discourse of Nigerian media handling of corruption cases. This discourse analysis is backed up with the scholarly interpretation …
On Pathways That Changed Myanmar: A Précis, Matthew Mullen Ph.D.
On Pathways That Changed Myanmar: A Précis, Matthew Mullen Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Change in Myanmar came from above, below, within, abroad, and the fore. This précis of Pathways That Changed Myanmar explains how a multidimensional understanding of change in Myanmar can help to explain the military junta’s decision to move towards a pacted transition. Subversion and creation at the grassroots level transformed the distribution of opportunities, leverage, power, incentives, and influences, as did the global effort to name, shame, and sanction the regime. Decades of contention from the National League for Democracy and many ethnic political groups, in combination with the impact of the Third Force, a network that sought to engage …
Deconstructing Internationalization: Advocating Glocalization In International Higher Education, Fay Patel Ph.D.
Deconstructing Internationalization: Advocating Glocalization In International Higher Education, Fay Patel Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Internationalization has become more than a buzz word in recent years. It has become a leading investment, generating substantial revenues, and is regarded as an imperative in its kinship to branding and rankings in international higher education. The author deconstructs internationalization as a western hegemonic perspective and advocates instead glocalization in international higher education. Glocalization focuses on enhancing the quality of learning for local and global learner cohorts through mutual understanding and shared values at a deep level of academic and social engagement. Following a literature review, the romanticized notion of internationalization is deconstructed to expose the inherent development communication …

Developing A Hyperspectral Non-Technical Survey For Minefields Via Uav And Helicopter, Milan Bajic, Tamara Ivelja, Anna Brook
Developing A Hyperspectral Non-Technical Survey For Minefields Via Uav And Helicopter, Milan Bajic, Tamara Ivelja, Anna Brook
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
The main topic discussed in this paper is the research, development, and implementation of hyperspectral remote sensing technology in humanitarian mine action (HMA), mainly for non-technical survey (NTS) from aerial platforms. NTS should be conducted to determine whether landmines or unexploded ordnance (UXO) exist in considered areas and whether clearance is needed and if so, in what scope. The availability of the hyperspectral sensors (2011–2012) that are suitable for use with multi-engine unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) enabled the development of systems for HMA. While large and costly airborne hyperspectral systems have been available for over two decades, they had little …

The Maine Chance: Private-Public Partnership And The Katahdin Woods And Waters National Monument, Char Miller
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
The claim of a federal “land grab” in response to the creation of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Maine revealed a lack of historical awareness by critics of how two other cherished parks were established there: through private-public partnerships and the donation of land by private citizens.

Agrarian Reform In Sumber Klampok, Emma Trainor
Agrarian Reform In Sumber Klampok, Emma Trainor
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Agrarian reform in Indonesia is part of a movement beginning after independence was gained in 1945. Farmers have been fighting to obtain rights to their land from a government that has a history of violence, repression, and corruption for decades. Environmental, indigenous peoples’, peasant, and agrarian movements were given a legitimate, legal framework to work within after 1960 when the Basic Agrarian Law was passed, protecting the rights of the people to their land. However, during both the Old Order and especially New Order regimes, the law was often ignored by the government, and many grassroots organizations had to work …

Vulnerability And Resilience: The Farmers Of Sagara Village, Nick Olkovsky
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Agriculture is a large part of the economy and society of Tanzania, equating to 28% of the country’s GDP. Up to 80% of these farms are owned and worked by 19 million smallholder agriculturalists (FAO, 2015). Smallholder farmers are an inherently vulnerable demographic, due to their high reliance on agriculture for food and income in addition to their limited financial, technological, and labor resources (Morton, 2007). Simultaneously, these farmers are often uniquely adapted for the challenges they face, having developed strategies of addressing and mitigating risks over many generations. This study investigates the adaptative capacity of smallholder farmers in Sagara …

Increasing Population, Urbanization And Climatic Factors In Lagos State, Nigeria: The Nexus And Implications On Water Demand And Supply, Amidu Owolabi Ayeni Dr.
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This study examines the impact of population, urbanization, and climate on water supply in Lagos State. Population baseline data used for this research were based on provisional census data of 1963, 1973, 1991 and 2006. Information on water production, demand and supply for this study were cleaned from the Nigerian Bureau of statistics (NBS), Lagos State Water Corporation reports of different years and relevant literature on Lagos water supply and demand. Urbanization assessment were based on multi-temporal imageries from Landsat MSS, TM, NigeriaSat-1 and Landsat ETM+ for 1975, 1995, 2007, and 2015 respectively. The Census data revealed that the population …

Sustainability In Business: Adapting To New Trends, Derek Decastro
Sustainability In Business: Adapting To New Trends, Derek Decastro
Honors Senior Capstone Projects
Environmental sustainability is a concept that businesses should incorporate in order to maximize production, increase competitiveness in their respective markets, and enhance their longevity. To address and incorporate environmental and sustainability concerns into business practice, a concept call the triple bottom line was developed by John Elkington. As Timothy Slaper and Tanya Hall explain for the Indiana Business Review (2011), Elkington contrived the idea of the triple bottom line to include three primary factors: economic, environmental, and social, commonly referred to as the “three P’s” as profit, planet, and people (p. 4). Businesses that emphasize these three factors equally instead …

Knowledge Production, Pedagogy And Research In Ir: Perspectives From India, Seema Narain Ph.D.
Knowledge Production, Pedagogy And Research In Ir: Perspectives From India, Seema Narain Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
The implications of Eurocentrism in the production of historical and theoretical knowledge have been the subject of debates in multiple disciplines, including anthropology, history, and geography, yet in the field of International Relations (IR), an examination of the implications of Eurocentrism has, until recently, been little studied. Therefore, there is a critical need to revisit pedagogy and research in India to address this gap. This paper looks at knowledge production, pedagogy and research in India from the point of view of countering Eurocentrism in the IR discipline. It first discusses Eurocentrism and highlights the implications of Eurocentrism in the field …

Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
In the past fifteen years, the University has signed multiple national and global sustainability commitments, such as the 2003 Talloires Declaration, the 2007 American College and University President’s Climate Commitment, and the 2015 American Campuses Act on Climate Pledge (OFSb 2017). These commitments set ambitious climate action goals and address the responsibility of colleges and universities not only to cultivate a culture of environmental stewardship on campus but also to transform their conventional operational systems into sustainable systems. The University of Richmond’s 2017 Sustainability Report highlights the steps the University has taken to achieve these goals and identifies areas in …

The Coastal Monitor
There is something enchanting and vibrant about viewing the coast. Every day at CERCOM we are welcomed by either a vivid sunrise, a view of the barrier island Fire Island and a blending of the sky across the horizon, ultimately flooding the Great South Bay with either clouds or sunshine that reveals the Bay’s surface as either shimmering with sunlight, or an integration of sky and water as an endless ocean. I don’t normally wax poetic but the varying sights along the near shore ocean and this embayment beckon our scientific inquisitiveness. What’s below the surface water? How do animals …

School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The ecological impacts of invasive plants increase dramatically with time since invasion. Targeting young populations for treatment is therefore an economically and ecologically effective management approach, especially when linked to post-treatment monitoring to evaluate the efficacy of management. However, collecting detailed field-based post-treatment data is prohibitively expensive, typically resulting in inadequate documentation of the ecological effects of invasive plant management. Alternative approaches, such as remote detection with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), provide an opportunity to advance the science and practice of restoration ecology. In this study, we sought to determine the plant community response to different mechanical removal treatments to …

Food and environment are cultural stalwarts. Picture the red barn and solitary farmer toiling over fruited plains; or purple mountains majesty reflected in pristine waters. Agriculture and environment are core, distinct, American mythologies that we know are more intertwined than our stories reveal.
To create policy at the interface of such centrally important and overlapping American ideals, there are two options. Passive governance fosters markets in which participants make individual choices that aggregate into inadvertent collective action. In contrast, assertive governance allows the public, mediated through elected officials, to enact intentional, goal oriented policy.
American mythologies of food and environment …

China: Avoiding Impediments To Successful Climate Change Mitigation, Molly Rose Van Engelenhoven
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
This paper uses the Cultural Topography (CTOPs) methodology, an intelligence community standard which is used to avoid ethnocentric analysis and the dangerous practice of mirror imaging--projecting US culture on to another country rather than viewing the costs and benefits they face through their own cultural lens. CTOPs assess a country’s culture by examining four components of culture: identity, values, norms, and perceptual lens of an actor in conjunction with a specific issue of concern. This paper examines the internal culture of China, with the Chinese government as the key actor, to discover how to build effective policy to regulate air …
Analyzing Hydrologic Trends In Stream Discharge And Temperature Along Elevation Gradients In The Western United States: A Comparative Analysis Of Usgs And Pacific Crest Trail Sites, Paul B. Pratt
Standard Theses
Data were collected along elevation gradient in the western United States in order to determine whether US Geological Survey (USGS) gauge stations adequately depict hydrologic trends at high elevation areas within their drainage basins. The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) was used to access mountainous areas within USGS drainage basins. Metrics were developed that compared stream level on the date of collection to the stream level of the site during its historic flood stage. This allowed for data to be compared between high elevation PCT sites and their downstream USGS gauge stations. In some drainage basins there were discrepancies in hydrology, …

Herpetoplogical Survey Across Three Distinct Habitats In Ankarana National Park: Long-Term Effects Of Past Land Use On Species Composition In And Around The Park, Julia Park
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Ankarana National Park is home to a diverse population of herpetofauna. In this study, three distinct habitats in and around Ankarana National Park were surveyed for herpetological diversity. These habitats were defined as the deciduous forest located within the “tsingy” limestone karst canyons, the dry deciduous forest outside of the canyons, within the borders of the park, and the anthropogenically affected forest outside of the park’s borders, which is subject to logging and fruit tree harvesting. A total of 27 species of herpetofauna – six amphibian and 21 reptile species were found over the course of twelve days of surveying …
