Evidence Of Morphological And Functional Variation Among Bluegill Lepomis Macrochirus Populations Across Grand Lake St Mary's Watershed Area, Anthony Bell, Stephen J. Jacquemin

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A myriad of factors have been shown to influence the morphology offreshwaterfish. However, studies that parse out where variation is comingfrom (e.g. body size, sex, and habitat) as well as what potential thesechanges have to influence function (e.g. swimming performance) areunderstudied. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to describemorphological variation of BluegillLepomis macrochirusacross the GrandLake St Mary’s watershed area (northwest OH, USA) and test forcovariation of morphology with size, sex, and habitat as well as to assessswimming performance to discern whether any differences in habitat (andmorphology) correspond with functional aspects related to criticalswimming velocity. Geometric morphometric methods were used …

Defining And Closing The Hydraulic Fracturing Governance Gap, Joshua Ulan Galperin, Grace Heusner, Allison Sloto Jan 2017

Defining And Closing The Hydraulic Fracturing Governance Gap, Joshua Ulan Galperin, Grace Heusner, Allison Sloto

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

As recent examples in Texas and Colorado have shown, if local governments ban fracking, they risk pushback from state governments. This pushback, in turn, can result in preemption making an outright local ban on fracking self-defeating because it could ultimately result in less local control over the impacts of hydraulic fracturing. Given this potentially self-defeating nature of local fracking bans, local governments should address the impacts of fracking through more traditional local governance mechanisms that do not pose as great a risk to local authority.

On this premise, this Article seeks to make the case for the importance of, and …

A New Method For Simultaneous Determination Of Trace Amounts Of Cu(Ii) And Ni(Ii) Ions By Preconcentration And Spectrophotometric Analysis, Berri̇n Topuz, Şennur Merve Adanur, Arda Yalçuk Jan 2017

A New Method For Simultaneous Determination Of Trace Amounts Of Cu(Ii) And Ni(Ii) Ions By Preconcentration And Spectrophotometric Analysis, Berri̇n Topuz, Şennur Merve Adanur, Arda Yalçuk

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Immediate preconcentration and spectrophotometric methods have been developed for the determination of trace amounts of cupric ion (Cu(II)) and nickel ion (Ni(II)) through a solid phase extraction with XAD-4-N,N'-bis-(salicylidene) cyclohexanediamine (XAD-4-SCHD) resin and a complex color reaction of the ions with 2,6-dimethyl-morpholine dithiocarbamate (DMMDTC) in Triton X-100 media. A high preconcentration factor of 125 was achieved. The spectrophotometric method was based on the measurements of the absorption of colored chelates of ions complexing with DMMDTC, and the adsorptions of the complex solutions were measured at their maximum absorption peaks at 460 and 328 nm for Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions, respectively. …

Regulation-Structured Dynamic Metabolic Model Provides A Potential Mechanism For Delayed Enzyme Response In Denitrification Process, Hyun-Seob Song, Dennis G. Thomas, James C. Stegen, Minjing Li, Chongxuan Liu, Xuehang Song, Xingyuan Chen, Jim K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara, Timothy D. Scheibe

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

In a recent study of denitrification dynamics in hyporheic zone sediments, we observed a significant time lag (up to several days) in enzymatic response to the changes in substrate concentration. To explore an underlying mechanism and understand the interactive dynamics between enzymes and nutrients, we developed a trait-based model that associates a community’s traits with functional enzymes, instead of typically used species guilds (or functional guilds). This enzyme-based formulation allows to collectively describe biogeochemical functions of microbial communities without directly parameterizing the dynamics of species guilds, therefore being scalable to complex communities. As a key component of modeling, we accounted …

Performance Of Twelve Mass Transfer Based Reference Evapotranspiration Models Under Humid Climate, Koffi Djaman, Komlan Koudahe, Mamadou Sall, Isa Kabenge, Daran Rudnick, Suat Irkmak

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Reference evapotranspiration is very important parameter in the hydrological, agricultural and environmental studies and is accurately estimated by the FAO Penman-Monteith equation (FAO-PM) under different climatic conditions. However, due to data requirement of the FAO-PM equation, there is a need to investigate the applicability of alternative ETo equations under limited data. The objectives of this study were to evaluate twelve mass transfer based reference evapotranspiration equations and determine the impact of ETo equation on long term water management sustainability in Tanzania and Kenya. The results showed that the Albrecht, Brockamp-Wenner, Dalto, Meyer, Rohwer and Oudin ETo equations systematically overestimated the …

A “Grand” Unified Negotiation Theory . . . In Context, Adrian Borbély, Noam Ebner, Chris Honeyman, Sanda Kaufman, Andrea Kupfer Schneider Jan 2017

A “Grand” Unified Negotiation Theory . . . In Context, Adrian Borbély, Noam Ebner, Chris Honeyman, Sanda Kaufman, Andrea Kupfer Schneider

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Negotiation research began in the 20th century and is continuing apace. It is pursued from the perspectives of several disciplines including psychology, organizational behavior, labor relations, decision sciences, game theory, communications, legal studies, international relations, public policy, and others. Added to these are best practices from several fields engaged in intervention in conflicts. By now we have accumulated a considerable volume of wisdom regarding what drives people and entities to negotiate, how they behave when doing so, how they should handle negotiations to obtain specific results, and how to help disputants resolve to come to joint, mutually satisfactory decisions. However, …

Should They Listen To Us? Seeking A Negotiation / Conflict Resolution Contribution To Practice In Intractable Conflicts, Chris Honeyman, Sanda Kaufman, Andrea Kupfer Schneider Jan 2017

Should They Listen To Us? Seeking A Negotiation / Conflict Resolution Contribution To Practice In Intractable Conflicts, Chris Honeyman, Sanda Kaufman, Andrea Kupfer Schneider

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Conflict resolution (CR) has had its successes, particularly in what has become common negotiation and mediation practice in divorce, civil litigation, and small to medium scale public policy disputes. Yet despite these practical inroads and increasingly successful dissemination of the ideas of our field, CR practitioners in politics and policy (and other fields) are still conspicuous by their absence in the largest, most consequential conflicts. Negotiation remains the vehicle for addressing international conflicts nonviolently. However, as of 2007 when we first questioned the relative lack of practical impact (at the highest levels) of negotiation scholarship, the international relations practitioners did …

Environmental Injustice And The Pursuit Of A Post-Carbon World: The Unintended Consequences Of The Clean Air Act As A Cautionary Tale For Solar Energy Development, Shannon Elizabeth Bell Jan 2017

Environmental Injustice And The Pursuit Of A Post-Carbon World: The Unintended Consequences Of The Clean Air Act As A Cautionary Tale For Solar Energy Development, Shannon Elizabeth Bell

Brooklyn Law Review

Most policy decisions aimed at improving the environment have been conceived and implemented without attention to issues of environmental justice, creating what sociologist Julian Agyeman calls an “equity deficit” in the discourse and practice of environmental sustainability. This article presents the unintended consequences of the Clean Air Act (CAA) and its amendments as a cautionary tale for what can happen when environmental regulations are enacted without adequately considering environmental justice concerns. Although the CAA has been responsible for much good in the United States as a whole—including significant reductions in acid rain and health-harming pollutants—it has also brought significant harm …

Value Hypocrisy And Policy Sincerity: A Food Law Case Study, Joshua Ulan Galperin Jan 2017

Value Hypocrisy And Policy Sincerity: A Food Law Case Study, Joshua Ulan Galperin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

t is tempting to say that in 2017 there is a unique problem of hypocrisy in politics, where words and behaviors are so often in opposition. In fact, hypocrisy is nothing new. A robust legal and psychological literature on the importance of procedural justice demonstrates a longstanding concern with developing more just governing processes. One of the important features of this scholarship is that it does not focus only on the consequences of policymaking, in which behaviors, but not words, are relevant. Instead, it respects the intrinsic importance of fair process, lending credence not only to votes but also to …

A Regional Governance Structure For The Kimberley? Twenty-Five Years On From Crocodile Hole, Kathryn Thorburn Jan 2017

A Regional Governance Structure For The Kimberley? Twenty-Five Years On From Crocodile Hole, Kathryn Thorburn

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

1991 a large bush meeting was held at Rugan in the East Kimberley, organised by the Kimberley Land Council and attended by more than 500 Aboriginal people from across the Kimberley. This meeting is looked upon as one of the most significant expressions of pan-Kimberley identity in the post-settlement era and generated considerable discussion at a regional level. This event, which has since become known as ‘Crocodile Hole’, occurred in the shadow of the failure of land rights to be passed in Western Australia in the mid-1980s, and the impending Mabo decision. This paper attempts to track the idea of …

Treble In The Environment: Incorporating Music Into Environmental Education, Shinara Sunderlal

Pitzer Senior Theses

In this era where global sustainability is challenged, environmental education plays a vital role in building environmental awareness. Other roles of environmental education include the promotion of responsible citizenship and the fostering of environmental advocacy in children. As a way to strengthen these goals of environmental education, this thesis explores the dynamic uses of music to compound on the fields impact. I argue that the benefits of music outlined suggest music’s power to heighten environmental sensitivity from a young age. I use narratives from the environmental education, music, education, and psychology discourses to demonstrate the theoretical advantages of music in …

Regime Shifts And Panarchies In Regional Scale Social-Ecological Water Systems, Barbara Cosens Jan 2017

Regime Shifts And Panarchies In Regional Scale Social-Ecological Water Systems, Barbara Cosens

Articles

In this article we summarize histories of nonlinear, complex interactions among societal, legal, and ecosystem dynamics in six North American water basins, as they respond to changing climate. These case studies were chosen to explore the conditions for emergence of adaptive governance in heavily regulated and developed social-ecological systems nested within a hierarchical governmental system. We summarize resilience assessments conducted in each system to provide a synthesis and reference by the other articles in this special feature. We also present a general framework used to evaluate the interactions between society and ecosystem regimes and the governance regimes chosen to mediate …

White Privilege In Environmental Policy: An Analysis Of Hazardous Waste Management And Operations In Southeast Los Angeles, Lindsey Chen Jan 2017

White Privilege In Environmental Policy: An Analysis Of Hazardous Waste Management And Operations In Southeast Los Angeles, Lindsey Chen

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis takes an unconventional approach to environmental racism. Through the lens of white privilege and racial capitalism, I analyze hazardous waste procedures, work site dynamics, and governmental enforcement. Southeast Los Angeles encompasses 26 neighborhoods and the communities racial demographic is 85.8% people of color. The region is home to an abundance of hazardous waste generators, and the area is disproportionately burdened by pollution compared to the rest of LA County. I chose white privilege as a framework because more often than not, discrimination in the workplace is unintentional and covert. White privilege manifests through hazardous waste management in four …

Examining Inequalities In Science Literacy By Religious Affiliation Among Adults, Alexis Swendener Jan 2017

Examining Inequalities In Science Literacy By Religious Affiliation Among Adults, Alexis Swendener

The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal

Much attention has been given to the general public’s lack of understanding of science and the adverse effect of this lack of knowledge in our ever-advancing scientific and technological society. Religion remains an important social frame through which individuals interpret information, including scientific findings and facts and one deserving of closer examination in understanding disparities in public science knowledge. Using a random sample of adults in Nebraska, this study explored the association between religious affiliation and adult scientific literacy of human biological concepts. Results found a relationship between religious affiliation and adult scientific knowledge, even after controlling for confounding demographic …

Virus Taxonomy In The Age Of Metagenomics, Peter Simmonds, Mike Adams, Mária Benkő, Mya Breitbart, J. Rodney Brister, Eric Carstens Jan 2017

Virus Taxonomy In The Age Of Metagenomics, Peter Simmonds, Mike Adams, Mária Benkő, Mya Breitbart, J. Rodney Brister, Eric Carstens

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The number and diversity of viral sequences that are identified in metagenomic data far exceeds that of experimentally characterized virus isolates. In a recent workshop, a panel of experts discussed the proposal that, with appropriate quality control, viruses that are known only from metagenomic data can, and should be, incorporated into the official classification scheme of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). Although a taxonomy that is based on metagenomic sequence data alone represents a substantial departure from the traditional reliance on phenotypic properties, the development of a robust framework for sequence-based virus taxonomy is indispensable for the …

Indigenous Peoples Boxed In By Brazil’S Political Crisis, Manuela Carneiro Da Cunha, Ruben Caixeta, Jeremy M. Campbell Jan 2017

Indigenous Peoples Boxed In By Brazil’S Political Crisis, Manuela Carneiro Da Cunha, Ruben Caixeta, Jeremy M. Campbell

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Agribusiness has unprecedented leverage over highly unpopular Brazilian president Michel Temer, who is faced with several corruption charges and is struggling for political survival. In a little over one year, the agribusiness lobby and its allies have managed to erode thirty years of human rights and conservation laws. Indigenous peoples and their territorial rights are among the main targets of such policies, and there is no resolution to the situation in sight. With the insight of several scholars, the following forum assesses the consequences of losing the protection the Citizens’ Constitution of 1988 once afforded indigenous peoples in Brazil.
