Evaluating Trophic Rewilding As A Conservation Technique, Aaron Sieve Jan 2017

Evaluating Trophic Rewilding As A Conservation Technique, Aaron Sieve

Biology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The focus for this paper is to define specifically trophic rewilding, determine its efficacy as a conservation technique, and explore ways to lessen one of its key limitations. Trophic rewilding is the conservation technique whereby an extirpated keystone species or ecosystem engineer is reintroduced into a degraded habitat to restore ecological function by triggering trophic cascades. The technique is evaluated through analysis of the concepts of trophic cascades and ecosystem engineers. Key limitations of trophic rewilding are that a lack of population control in reintroduced may cause issues, that many times not enough is known about trophic cascades to be …

Nepal : Healthcare And Sanitation Issues Resulting From Frequent Natural Disasters In Nepal, Jake Lauderdale Jan 2017

Nepal : Healthcare And Sanitation Issues Resulting From Frequent Natural Disasters In Nepal, Jake Lauderdale

Global Public Health

This Public Health Brief calls to attention the issues plaguing Nepal as a result of both frequent natural disasters and poor healthcare infrastructure. The geographic characteristics of Nepal are shown to be a major factor in the damage and aftermath of natural disasters such as earthquakes. Due to its status as a poor and economically weakened country, Nepal must rely heavily on outside aid in order to alleviate the pressure of frequently occurring natural disasters. Despite work being done by several Non-Governmental Organizations, Nepal has a long way to go before they are able to independently manage the outcomes of …

Burundi : Water Scarcity, Isabel Salas Jan 2017

Burundi : Water Scarcity, Isabel Salas

Global Public Health

Burundi is located near the African great lakes region of East Africa. This country is one of the poorest and hungriest countries throughout the world because of this they are facing multiple problems with communicable disease. These families are seeing a reduction in the amount of water available to them and based on this they are receiving water from external sources such as wells and lakes. Most of the water throughout Burundi is contaminated with Phytoplankton which increase cholera outbreaks in this area. It has also been shown that uranium impacts the water throughout the wells and lakes. Both of …

Dewitt, Iowa: Smart Growth Design, Dr. Christopher Strunk, Melisa Ribikawskis

2016-2017: DeWitt, Iowa

As part of the Sustainable Working Landscapes Initiative project, two urban geography and planning classes researched Smart Growth principles and their applicability for the City of DeWitt. Smart Growth is a cohesive set of design philosophies that prioritizes mixed-use development over single-use development, pedestrian–friendly and bike-friendly transportation over automobile-dominated transportation, and infill development over peripheral development. Dozens of governmental, businesses, and civic organizations, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), have recognized the movement by founding the Smart Growth Network, which is an association that promotes Smart Growth nationwide.

Local officials in DeWitt are interested in incorporating the principles of Smart …

Transparency And Toxic Waste: State Decisions To Report And Import Toxic Waste, Kelsey Cathcart Jan 2017

Transparency And Toxic Waste: State Decisions To Report And Import Toxic Waste, Kelsey Cathcart

Honors Thesis Collection

This study examines a country’s reporting behavior and its decision to import toxic waste within the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal. I examine the contexts in which states report and make decisions to import toxic waste within both industrialized and developing countries. It appears that wealth influences a country’s capacity to establish reporting systems, with reduced transparency of the toxic waste trade in developing countries. Although most countries that do import toxic waste are industrialized, the developing countries that do import toxic waste are the most corrupt developing countries.

Analysis Of The Effects Of First Year Advisors And First Year Mentors On A Wellesley Student’S Choice Of Stem Vs. Non Stem Major, Kelly Kung Jan 2017

Analysis Of The Effects Of First Year Advisors And First Year Mentors On A Wellesley Student’S Choice Of Stem Vs. Non Stem Major, Kelly Kung

Honors Thesis Collection

This thesis focuses on the effects of a Wellesley student’s First Year Mentor’s major and First Year advisor’s department on the student’s choice of major. The Rubin Causal framework was used to draw causal inferences instead of just correlation. Doing so, it is possible to attribute any effect to the type of First Year Mentor or First Year advisor assigned to the student. In the mentoring component, the data was analyzed using Fisher’s Test and the Separate Regressions Method. Each method gave some statistically significant results; however they were not practically significant due to their small effect sizes. Our approach …

The Writing Center: Fifteen Years Of Transforming Writers At The University Of Montana, Kelly Webster, Demetra Perros, Eli Redeker

The Writing Center: Reports

This milestone [publication] invites a retrospective look at the impact and scope of our services. The many evolutions of the UM Writing Center—from a small “lab” for struggling writers in 2002 to a robust communication center for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff in 2017—have consistently embodied education at its best: communities of practice at the intersection of students, faculty, staff, and tutors.

Improved Mixing System For Aquatic Mesocosm Facility, Kyle Boyce, Ben Chalfant, Ron Fitch Jan 2017

Improved Mixing System For Aquatic Mesocosm Facility, Kyle Boyce, Ben Chalfant, Ron Fitch

Capstone Design Expo Posters

The VCU Environmental Science Department had in its possession 24 500 gal tanks they had implemented to study the plankton and bacteria activity of the James River. Water was pumped up from the James River a quarter mile to the tanks and studied over week long periods to analyze the growth and survival of plankton and bacteria as it exists in the river. Over time it was found that the bacteria in the mesocosms would growth at an increased rate as sediments and inorganic matter fell out of suspensions. For this reason, it was necessary to develop an agitator that …

Seaport Climate Vulnerability Assessment At The Multi-Port Scale: A Review Of Approaches, R. Duncan Mcintosh, Austin Becker Jan 2017

Seaport Climate Vulnerability Assessment At The Multi-Port Scale: A Review Of Approaches, R. Duncan Mcintosh, Austin Becker

Marine Affairs Faculty Publications

In the face of climate change impacts projected over the coming century, seaport decision makers have the responsibility to manage risks for a diverse array of stakeholders and enhance seaport resilience against climate and weather impacts. At the single port scale, decision makers such as port managers may consider the uninterrupted functioning of their port the number one priority. But, at the multi-port (regional or national) scale, policy-makers will need to prioritize competing port climate-adaptation needs in order to maximize the efficiency of limited physical and financial resources and maximize the resilience of the marine transportation system as a whole. …

  • At that point [1979] the only place we had on campus to meet was the ARC. I remember this big meeting in the ARC. And Betty Hall was the best I’d ever seen her. She got up and said, “Well, we’re going to have this merger between Bard College and Simon’s Rock.” The analogy she used was brilliant. She talked about the chicken called the Barred Rock. There’s the Barred Rock, which is a chicken. …

Is There A Path For Green Growth? Evidence From India, Thuc Anh Thi Trinh Jan 2017

Is There A Path For Green Growth? Evidence From India, Thuc Anh Thi Trinh

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper uses historical temperature fluctuations in India to identify its effects on economic growth rates. Using a climate-adjusted form of the Solow growth model, I find that one degree Celsius increase in temperature decreases GDP per capita growth by 0.71%. This finding informs debates over the role of climate on economic development and suggests the possibility of a green path for economic growth, a policy agenda that is both sustainable and pro-growth.

Thompson, Trevor M. Faske, Nana Banahene, Dominique Grim, Salvatore J. Agosta, Dylan Parry, Patrick C. Tobin, Derek M. Johnson, Kristine L. Grayson

Biology Publications

Variation in thermal performance within and between populations provides the potential for adaptive responses to increasing temperatures associated with climate change. Organisms experiencing temperatures above their optimum on a thermal performance curve exhibit rapid declines in function and these supraoptimal temperatures can be a critical physiological component of range limits. The gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), is one of the best-documented biological invasions and factors driving its spatial spread are of significant ecological and economic interest. The present study examines gypsy moth sourced from different latitudes across its North American range for sensitivity to high temperature in constant …

Genetic Differentiation Of Spring-Spawning And Fall-Spawning Male Atlantic Sturgeon In The James River, Virginia, Matthew T. Balazik, Daniel J. Farrae, Tanya L. Darden, Greg C. Garman Jan 2017

Genetic Differentiation Of Spring-Spawning And Fall-Spawning Male Atlantic Sturgeon In The James River, Virginia, Matthew T. Balazik, Daniel J. Farrae, Tanya L. Darden, Greg C. Garman

Biology Publications

Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, Acipenseridae) populations are currently at severely depleted levels due to historic overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution. The importance of biologically correct stock structure for effective conservation and management efforts is well known. Recent improvements in our understanding of Atlantic sturgeon migrations, movement, and the occurrence of putative dual spawning groups leads to questions regarding the true stock structure of this endangered species. In the James River, VA specifically, captures of spawning Atlantic sturgeon and accompanying telemetry data suggest there are two discrete spawning groups of Atlantic sturgeon. The two putative spawning groups were …
