Production Of Energy And Environmental Protection As A Prerequisite For Sustainable Development, Diana Baus Feb 2017

Production Of Energy And Environmental Protection As A Prerequisite For Sustainable Development, Diana Baus

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This paper explains why renewable energy is a prerequisite for sustainable development. The development of renewable energy sources is important because renewable energy sources have a very important role in reducing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, eradicate poverty and increase the employment rate. In the first section the paper introduces renewable energy sources. The focus is on the function of solar energy, wind power, biomass, geothermal energy, and hydroelectric energy and their implementation globally. The second part of the paper elaborates on the economic, political, and social aspects for the development of renewable energy sources. …

Reduce, Reuse, And Organize: Recycling And Participation In The Environmental Movement, Winston Tripp Jan 2017

Reduce, Reuse, And Organize: Recycling And Participation In The Environmental Movement, Winston Tripp

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

This paper examines the relationship between the frequency of participation in recycling programs and participation in the environmental movement. Although many studies exist on the factors affecting recycling behavior, few examine its relationship with the environmental movement. This is an especially important link to understand more fully as participation in recycling programs has become increasingly common but efforts continue to increase participation in recycling programs. I utilize data from the 2010 U.S. General Social Survey and the International Social Survey Programme to examine this relationship using four Logistic Regression models. I test the association between recycling behavior and several forms …

What’S New? Deploying A Library New Titles Page With Minimal Programming, John Meyerhofer Jan 2017

What’S New? Deploying A Library New Titles Page With Minimal Programming, John Meyerhofer

Staff Publications

With a new titles web page, a library has a place to show faculty, students, and staff the items they are purchasing for their community. However, many times heavy programing knowledge and/or a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) or APIs separate a library’s data from making a new titles web page a reality. Without IT staff, a new titles page can become nearly impossible or not worth the effort. Here we will demonstrate how a small liberal arts college took its acquisition data and combined it with a Google Sheet, HTML, and a little JavaScript to create a new …

Bioethics In The Work Of Ernest Everett Just: + Missing - Some 400 Pages, Theodore Walker Jan 2017

Bioethics In The Work Of Ernest Everett Just: + Missing - Some 400 Pages, Theodore Walker

Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events

Biology + ethics = bioethics. Here we see that Howard University biologist Ernest Everett Just (born 1883, died 1941) connected biology to ethics.

According to Just, various forms of specific biology (including especially cell biology) plus “general biology” are necessary for explaining adequately the origin of ethical behaviors. Social ethical behaviors, especially mutual aid and cooperative interactions with others and the environment, are essential to evolutionary advances among living creatures, ranging from humans to cells. Accordingly, theory of ethics (moral theory) should have roots in biology.

Also, Just wrote an unpublished book-length manuscript—“some 400 typed pages” (Just 1940)—on seeking the …

Effects Of Exposure To Quantum Dots In The External And Internal Environments Of Organisms, Kenton Layne Leigh Jan 2017

Effects Of Exposure To Quantum Dots In The External And Internal Environments Of Organisms, Kenton Layne Leigh

Student Theses and Dissertations

The use of nanotechnology in research and consumer products is increasing, but there are few studies regarding the safety of nanoparticles (NPs). NPs’ small size and increased surface area allow for unique physical and chemical properties not seen in bulk counterparts of the same material. Thus, NP interactions within environmental and biological matrices are not well understood. Specifically, quantum dots (QDs) have garnered increased attention due to their superior optical properties. However, little research on the effects of QDs on the environment is available. The studies described herein provide data regarding interactions of QDs in aquatic and terrestrial environments using …

Faculty Publications

The production of hydrogen and methane by geochemical reactions associated with the serpentinization of ultramafic rocks can potentially support subsurface microbial ecosystems independent of the photosynthetic biosphere. Methanogenic and methanotrophic microorganisms are abundant in marine hydrothermal systems heavily influenced by serpentinization, but evidence for methane-cycling archaea and bacteria in continental serpentinite springs has been limited. This report provides metagenomic and experimental evidence for active methanogenesis and methanotrophy by microbial communities in serpentinite springs of the Voltri Massif, Italy. Methanogens belonging to family Methanobacteriaceae and methanotrophic bacteria belonging to family Methylococcaceae were heavily enriched in three ultrabasic springs (pH 12). Metagenomic …

Applying Population And Community Ecology Theory To Advance Understanding Of Belowground Biogeochemistry, Robert W. Buchkowski, Mark A. Bradford, A. Stuart Grandy, Oswald J. Schmitz, William R. Wieder

Faculty Publications

Approaches to quantifying and predicting soil biogeochemical cycles mostly consider microbial biomass and community composition as products of the abiotic environment. Current numerical approaches then primarily emphasise the importance of microbe–environment interactions and physiology as controls on biogeochemical cycles. Decidedly less attention has been paid to understanding control exerted by community dynamics and biotic interactions. Yet a rich literature of theoretical and empirical contributions highlights the importance of considering how variation in microbial population ecology, especially biotic interactions, is related to variation in key biogeochemical processes like soil carbon formation. We demonstrate how a population and community ecology perspective can …

Nitrogen Sustainability: Impediments To Action And Communication, Eric E. Jorgensen Jan 2017

Nitrogen Sustainability: Impediments To Action And Communication, Eric E. Jorgensen

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

“Sustainability” is widely used to imply the presence of explicit consideration of environmentally friendly needs and that high societal-value is placed on those needs. However, it is abundantly clear after 30 years that talking about sustainability and achieving it are two entirely different things. The core concept underlying sustainability is that current human practices and activities be conducted so as to not degrade prospects for future generations. With nitrogen, conflicts about sustainability in-theory and sustainability in-practice are close to the surface because of nitrogen’s central role in food production and economic activity. Measures of nitrogen inputs commonly range as high …

Urban Environmental Performance Index: The Quito Pilot Case, Diego C. Manya, Ryan Thomas, Matthew Moroney

Yale Day of Data

In the context of the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and its indicators, especially Goal 11, the importance of indicators is paramount to the implementation, monitoring and eventual success of the SDG. However, a review of global sustainability indicators reveals major gaps in coverage, including scientific gaps. Indicators are often siloed, meaning at the urban scale where issues often overlap and intersect, existing indicators do not take into consideration cross-sectoral linkages. Finally, many indicators fail to adequately address social equity or inclusion, a high-priority issue identified as central to new definitions of green economy and sustainable development at …

This paper reports a nanometer-scale investigation of trace element (As, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, S and Zn) distributions in the root system Spartina alterniflora during dormancy. The sample was collected on a salt marsh island in Jamaica Bay, New York, in April 2015 and the root was cross-sectioned with 10 μm resolution. Synchrotron X-ray nanofluorescence was applied to map the trace element distributions in selected areas of the root epidermis and endodermis. The sampling resolution was 60 nm to increase the measurement accuracy and reduce the uncertainty. The results indicate that the elemental concentrations in the epidermis, outer …
