Like Watching A Brother Die: Environmental Racism In Bahia, Brazil, Meredith Main Feb 2017

Like Watching A Brother Die: Environmental Racism In Bahia, Brazil, Meredith Main

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Until the 1970s, small black fishing communities primarily populated Bahia’s north coast. A recent demand for luxury coastal real estate has radically altered the region’s social and environmental landscape. While Bahia’s population is roughly 80% poor and black, the coast is now a space of exclusivity and whiteness. Sewage infrastructure does not meet the needs of the growing population. Domestic sewage flows directly into urban rivers. Poor black fishers, whose food security and livelihoods depend on access to healthy water resources, suffer most in this context. This dissertation explores two interlinking forms of environmental racism – water pollution and racial …

The Glass House Effect: Big Data, The New Oil, And The Power Of Analogy, Dennis D. Hirsch Feb 2017

The Glass House Effect: Big Data, The New Oil, And The Power Of Analogy, Dennis D. Hirsch

Maine Law Review

One hears with some frequency today that “data is the new oil.” Recently, Virginia Rometty, IBM’s Chief Executive Officer, updated the phrase, explaining that Big Data is the new oil. Most people who have used the analogy do so in order to convey Big Data’s tremendous value. Data is an essential resource that powers the information economy much like oil has fueled the industrial economy. Big Data promises a plethora of new uses—the identification and prevention of the pandemics, the emergence of new businesses and business sectors, the improvement of health care quality and efficiency, and enhanced protection of the …

Incorporating Sociocultural Phenomena Into Ecosystem-Service Valuation: The Importance Of Critical Pluralism, Carena J. Van Riper, Adam C. Landon, Sarah Kidd, Patrick Bitterman, Lee A. Fitzgerald, Elise F. Granek, Sonia Ibarra, David Iwaniec, Christopher Raymond, David Toledo

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ecosystem-services scholarship has largely focused on monetary valuation and the material contributions of ecosystems to human well-being. Increasingly, research is calling for a deeper understanding of how less tangible, nonmaterial values shape management and stakeholder decisions. We propose a framework that characterizes a suite of sociocultural phenomena rooted in key social science disciplines that are currently underrepresented in the ecosystem-services literature. The results from three example studies are presented to demonstrate how the tenets of this conceptual model can be applied in practice. We consider the findings from these studies in light of three priorities for future research: (1) complexities …

Cultivating (A) Sustainability Capital: Urban Agriculture, Eco-Gentrification, And The Uneven Valorization Of Social Reproduction, Nathan Mcclintock

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Urban agriculture (UA), for many activists and scholars, plays a prominent role in food justice struggles in cities throughout the Global North, a site of conflict between use and exchange values, and rallying point for progressive claims to the right to the city. Recent critiques, however, warn of its contribution to gentrification and displacement. The use/exchange value binary no longer as useful an analytic as it once was, geographers need to better understand UA’s contradictory relations to capital, particularly in the neoliberal Sustainable City. To this end, I bring together feminist theorizations of social reproduction, Bourdieu’s “species of capital”, and …

Measuring And Improving Seniors' Access To Medical Facilities, Angelika Zygo Jan 2017

Measuring And Improving Seniors' Access To Medical Facilities, Angelika Zygo

Master's Theses

The travel behaviors of older adults often shift as they retire, begin second careers and make residence location choices geared towards aging in place. Those who rely on transit as their primary mode of transportation can face many accessibility and connectivity challenges when traveling to basic amenities due to their unique travel behaviors and declining mobility with advanced age. First chapter of this thesis focuses on a subset of these travel behaviors through a literature review then evaluates the ability of public transportation to meet the specific mobility needs of older adults (defined in three ways: as those adults >65 …

After Flint: Environmental Justice As Equal Protection, David A. Dana, Deborah Tuerkheimer Jan 2017

After Flint: Environmental Justice As Equal Protection, David A. Dana, Deborah Tuerkheimer

NULR Online

In this essay, Professors Dana and Tuerkheimer conceptualize Flint as an archetypical case of underenforcement—that is, a denial of the equal protection of laws guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Viewed as such, the inadequacy of environmental regulation can be understood as a failure that extends beyond the confines of Flint; a failure that demands a far more expansive duty to protect vulnerable populations.

The Teachable Moment: Engaging Students In Social Justice Movements, Tiffany Yvette Lane, Christine M. Chiarelli-Helminiak, Casey Bohrman, Terrence Lewis

Social Work (Graduate) Faculty Publications

Social justice has long been at the forefront of the core values of the social work profession. Social workers are charged to confront social injustices and advocate for social change. In 2014, there was a societal response across the United States to the deaths of two African-American men, Mike Brown and Eric Garner, and the decision to not indict the police officers who killed them. The collective reaction was reflective of a country unsettled by the criminal justice system’s ongoing acceptance of structural discrimination. This article will focus on one university’s social work faculty’s collective response to the brutal killings …

Border Insecurity: Reading Transnational Environments In Jim Lynch’S Border Songs, Jenny Kerber Jan 2017

Border Insecurity: Reading Transnational Environments In Jim Lynch’S Border Songs, Jenny Kerber

English and Film Studies Faculty Publications

This article applies an eco-critical approach to contemporary American fiction about the Canada-US border, examining Jim Lynch’s portrayal of the British Columbia-Washington borderlands in his 2009 novel Border Songs. It argues that studying transnational environmental actors in border texts—in this case, marijuana, human migrants, and migratory birds—helps illuminate the contingency of political boundaries, problems of scale, and discourses of risk and security in cross-border regions after 9/11. Further, it suggests that widening the analysis of trans-border activity to include environmental phenomena productively troubles concepts of nature and regional belonging in an era of climate change and economic globalization. Creating Integrated Strategies For Increasing Access To Healthy Affordable Food In Urban Communities: A Case Study Of Intersecting Food Initiatives, Michele Silver, Afia Bediako, Tracey Capers, Aysu Kirac, Nicholas Freudenberg

Publications and Research

In New York and other cities, substantial evidence documents that community food environments interact with inequitable allocation of power, wealth and services to shape the distribution of diet-related diseases and food insecurity. This case study shows how one Central Brooklyn community organization, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, has launched multiple coordinated food initiatives in order to reduce the burden of food-related health problems and boost community development. The report used standard case study methods to document the implementation of the New York City Food and Fitness Partnership in Central Brooklyn. The case study shows how two distinct strands of activities, a …
