Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

In thinking about this volume, questions that come to light are: how does transnationalism redefine aspects of feminist engagement, cultural forms, political causes, (hetero)patriarchal discourses and issues of sexuality and sexual difference? Conceptually, theoretically, and pragmatically, what is the potentiality and trajectory of the literary voices and creativity of African and African Diasporic women writers and artists in their trans-portation, transformation, incorporation, and dissemination as subjects within this movement, who authorize its formative constructs, indexical lens, and its range of permutations? Following the logic of such inquiries, transnationalism trajectory alongside postmodernity constitutes an important underlying rubric of the engagement with …

From Eden To Dystopia: An Ecocritical Examination Of Emergent Mythologies In Early Los Angeles Literary Texts, Jaquelin Pelzer Dec 2017

From Eden To Dystopia: An Ecocritical Examination Of Emergent Mythologies In Early Los Angeles Literary Texts, Jaquelin Pelzer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In From Eden to Dystopia: An Ecocritical Examination of Emergent Mythologies in Early Los Angeles Literary Texts, ecocriticism and critical regionalism were utilized alongside other American Studies practices to analyze nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century depictions of nature in Los Angeles. Specifically, these tools were applied to travel guides and narratives of the 1870s and 1880s, the turn-of-the-century magazine The Land of Sunshine, Upton Sinclair’s Oil! (1926) and Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep (1939), and other non-fiction publications of the 1920s and ’30s to track an evolving narrative of Los Angeles as a paradise and later as a place perched …

A Spiritual Framework Of Organic Oneness: The Eco-Theological Shift Towards A Collective Ecological Consciousness, Kjirsten Francisco José Durand Dec 2017

A Spiritual Framework Of Organic Oneness: The Eco-Theological Shift Towards A Collective Ecological Consciousness, Kjirsten Francisco José Durand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Earth’s environment has been undergoing unprecedented rates of degradation during the Anthropocene paradigm. Current projections for the near future show climate change producing grim outcomes for most habitable parts of the world. This thesis defends the argument that in order to adequately address the state of the environment, humanity must experience a shift in collective consciousness away from the current philosophical paradigm, and instead adopt a paradigm that enables a common mindset regarding the place of humans within the natural environment. Various forms of spiritual ecology are explored: deep ecology, biblical eco-theology, and eco-feminist theology. These positions are explored in …

Necessary Companions: Faith And Reason, Timothy Law Snyder Dec 2017

Necessary Companions: Faith And Reason, Timothy Law Snyder

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Can faith and reason exist, free of mutual companionship? If we restrict ourselves to a traditional scientific method when pondering questions of the universe and close the door to theological data and human thought, we may be rendering inaccessible the majority of what exists. As a scientist, I take solace in what we can discover through science and math as we seek to understand the one percent of our physical universe that is accessible. But humans seek to know more, to learn more, to experience more. In this essay, I argue that the synthesis of faith and reason helps us …

The Ecowas Court, Activist Forces, And The Pursuit Of Environmental And Socioeconomic Justice In Nigeria, Okechukwu Emmanuel Effoduh Nov 2017

The Ecowas Court, Activist Forces, And The Pursuit Of Environmental And Socioeconomic Justice In Nigeria, Okechukwu Emmanuel Effoduh

LLM Theses

The thesis has two objectives. The first (and central) objective is to examine the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS Court (a sub-regional international court in West Africa), and its role within the West African region, especially how the Court has served as a resource for the Activist Forces that operate in the sub-region, in their pursuit of Environmental and Socioeconomic Justice in Nigeria. The second goal of this thesis, which is ancillary to the first, is to investigate the Courts jurisprudence in three landmark cases: SERAP v. Nigeria & Anor (2010); …

Examining The Relationship Between Park Neighborhoods, Features, Cleanliness, And Condition With Observed Weekday Park Usage And Physical Activity: A Case Study, Kerry Hamilton, Andrew T. Kaczynski, Melissa L. Fair, Lucie Levesque Nov 2017

Examining The Relationship Between Park Neighborhoods, Features, Cleanliness, And Condition With Observed Weekday Park Usage And Physical Activity: A Case Study, Kerry Hamilton, Andrew T. Kaczynski, Melissa L. Fair, Lucie Levesque

Faculty Publications

Background. Little research has comprehensively explored how park features, quality indicators, and neighborhood environments are associated with observed park usage and physical activity (PA). This case study examined whether weekday park usage and PA differ by neighborhood type, across numerous categories of park features, and according to park feature condition and cleanliness. Methods. Direct observation was used to capture the number of users and PA levels within 143 park features in 6 parks (3 urban, 3 suburban) over the course of six weeks. Audits of park environments assessed the type, condition, and cleanliness of all features and amenities. …

Environmental Injustice And The Problem Of The Law, Uma Outka Nov 2017

Environmental Injustice And The Problem Of The Law, Uma Outka

Maine Law Review

Over the past fifteen years, legal academia has produced a sizeable body of scholarship on the widely acknowledged problem of environmental injustice. Although there have been positive responses in the policy arena, no similar level of concern is evident in the courts. Most legal claims directly addressing environmental injustice fail, recent developments in civil rights case law are discouraging, and current constructions of environmental laws are proving theoretically inadequate to protect communities already subjected to disproportionate toxic exposure or threatened by new pollution. This Comment explores the state of the law of environmental justice and offers an analysis of why …

Understanding The Linkages Between Urban Transportation Design And Population Exposure To Traffic-Related Air Pollution: Application Of An Integrated Transportation And Air Pollution Modeling Framework To Tampa, Fl, Sashikanth Gurram Nov 2017

Understanding The Linkages Between Urban Transportation Design And Population Exposure To Traffic-Related Air Pollution: Application Of An Integrated Transportation And Air Pollution Modeling Framework To Tampa, Fl, Sashikanth Gurram

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rapid and unplanned urbanization has ushered in a variety of public health challenges, including exposure to traffic pollution and greater dependence on automobiles. Moreover, vulnerable population groups often bear the brunt of negative outcomes and are subject to disproportionate exposure and health effects. This makes it imperative for urban transportation engineers, land use planners, and public health professionals to work synergistically to understand both the relationship between urban design and population exposure to traffic pollution, and its social distribution. Researchers have started to pay close attention to this connection, mainly by conducting observational studies on the relationship between transportation, urban …

Direct Potable Reuse In Small-To-Medium Sized Inland Communities: Lessons Learned For Public Education And Outreach, Claudia B. Pratesi Nov 2017

Direct Potable Reuse In Small-To-Medium Sized Inland Communities: Lessons Learned For Public Education And Outreach, Claudia B. Pratesi

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Drought, growing populations, and potential conflict over water in the American Southwest have water authorities examining highly treated wastewater as an option to augment municipal supplies. Direct potable reuse (DPR) holds promise for improving sustainability and reliability of potable water supplies by generating high-quality drinking water from wastewater. Despite research demonstrating that DPR can be safe, one of the biggest hindrances to DPR is negative public perception. Attempts to implement some DPR project have failed, while others have proceeded quickly. Using insights from the literature and interviews with water managers, this study aims to: (1) examine existing community conditions related …

Tree Canopy Change In Coastal Los Angeles, 2009 - 2014, Dexter H. Locke, Michele Romolini, Michael Galvin, Jarlath P.M. O'Neil-Dunne, Eric G. Strauss

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Los Angeles, California is prone to extreme climate events—e.g. drought, wildfires, and floods—that are only expected to increase with climate change. The establishment of green infrastructure, including a stable urban forest, is a strategy to improve resilience not only to these events, but also to contribute to other environmental, social, and economic goals. To this end, cities throughout Los Angeles County have tree planting programs and policies aimed to grow and maintain their urban forests. Despite the policy objectives and management goals of such programs, we know surprisingly little about the spatial distribution of the existing urban forest, how and …

We Walk With Time, Time Does Not Walk With Us, Angelina L. Grey Nov 2017

We Walk With Time, Time Does Not Walk With Us, Angelina L. Grey

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The conceptual framework of Indigenous placemaking is defined as a fundamental and complex approach to the processes of the Indigenous planning paradigm. To identify placemaking is to acknowledge and recognize Indigenous place-based knowledge as essential planning tools when working with Indigenous communities. Colonization and western acculturization adjudicated the divestment of Indigenous languages and cultures through western policies and Indian school education. Today, Indigenous worldviews are tainted with extreme levels of sociocultural disparities. The implementation of Indigenous planning processes establishes an understanding to Indigenous community-building through shared knowledge and collaboration. The concepts of placemaking thus enables and empowers Indigenous communities to …

Drawing Upon Our Roots And Charism To Address Climate Change And Build Bridges Of Dialogue In Addressing Human Rights And Achieving An Integral Ecology, Leanne M. Jablonski

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Although sustainability and human rights are interconnected expressions of Catholic social teaching, the fields and praxis have developed independently. Human rights and other justice issues are rooted in the humanities and social sciences. The idea of sustainability has roots in the humanities and social sciences, but also in natural science and engineering. While sustainability research by scientists and engineers receives support, it is lacking for consideration of human rights and justice concerns, largely because these are viewed as advocacy. More recently, the intersection of these areas, particularly in the examination of the impacts of global climate change, has provided an …

A Comparative Study On Carbon Emission Reduction Systems, Mingde Cao Nov 2017

A Comparative Study On Carbon Emission Reduction Systems, Mingde Cao

Dissertations & Theses

The overwhelming majority of scientists have concluded that global warming is unequivocal. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) fifth report in 2013 concluded that the challenge of climate disruption to human beings is even more imperative than the previous report claimed, and that anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions have extremely likely been the dominant causes of the observed global warming since the mid-20th century.

Anthropogenic GHGs emissions have many implications, including more intensive, extreme meteorological events, spreading of diseases, and threatening human health and life. Climate change also causes injustice in human society because of the dislocation of the …
