Explaining Opposition To Refugee Resettlement: The Role Of Nimbyism And Perceived Threats, Jeremy Ferwerda, D. J. Flynn, Yusaku Horiuchi
Dartmouth Scholarship
One week after President Donald Trump signed a controversial executive order to reduce the influx of refugees to the United States, we conducted a survey experiment to understand American citizens ’ attitudes toward refugee resettlement. Specifically, we evaluated whether citizens consider the geographic context of the resettlement program (that is, local versus national) and the degree to which they are swayed by media frames that increasingly associate refugees with terrorist thre ats. Our findings highlight a collective action problem: Participants are consistently less supportive of resettlement within their own communities than resettlement elsewhere in the country. This pattern holds across …

Affective Afterlives: An Ethnography Of Activism Between Movements, Manissa Maharawal
Affective Afterlives: An Ethnography Of Activism Between Movements, Manissa Maharawal
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This ethnographic project starts at the end of Occupy Wall Street in New York City and ends at the beginning of Black Lives Matter in Oakland, CA. In between these two movements it looks at a variety of political projects that focused on issues of housing and anti-gentrification in New York City and San Francisco. Throughout I favor a view of social movements that understands the messy trajectories of activism. This methodological privileging of what activists are doing, and the places and spaces in which they ground their work seeks to de-center bounded social movements in the study of politics …

Address At The Lincoln Charter Of The Forest Conference, Bishop Grosseteste University: The Charter Of The Forest: Evolving Human Rights In Nature, Nicholas A. Robinson

This conference is a singular event, long over due. It has been 258 years since William Blackstone celebrated “these two sacred charters,”1 Carta de Foresta and Magna Carta, with his celebrated publication of their authentic texts. In 2015, the Great Charter of Liberties enjoyed scholarly, political and popular focus. The companion Forest Charter was and is too much neglected.2 I salute the American Bar Association, and Dan Magraw, for the ABA’s educational focus of the Forest Charter, as well as Magna Carta. Today we restore some balance with this conference’s searching and insightful examination of the Forest Charter’s significance.
Tackling The Health Gap: The Role Of Psychosocial Processes, Nancy E. Adler, Jacinth J. X. Tan
Tackling The Health Gap: The Role Of Psychosocial Processes, Nancy E. Adler, Jacinth J. X. Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In The Health Gap, Michael Marmot describes how, starting even before birth, social conditions set individuals on trajectories that eventuate in inequities in health and longevity. In addition to race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status linked to income and education plays a major role in determining health trajectories. The effects emerge not only at the very bottom of the socioeconomic spectrum, but across the whole range.1 The fact that health effects persist at levels where resources are more than adequate to fulfill material needs suggests that the health gap is not due only to material privation associated with poverty, but also …

Reading Speculative Futures In A Post-Truth World, Rachel Webb Jekanowski
The Goose
Faced with the threat of a “post-truth” world and a widening chasm of exchange between climate change deniers and environmentalists, I argue that future-orientated literary and media speculative fictions—which I term “speculative futures”—offer a means of building lines of communication across social and political divisions. This thought piece on “The Environmental Humanities in a Post-Truth World” mediates upon the potentiality of speculative futures as theory, social bridge-building, and pedagogical tool. Speculative fictions (especially those that address environmental justice, and anti-colonial and feminist politics) use storytelling and future imaginaries to challenge political falsehoods and imagine more ecological, de-colonized futures.

For Many In Puerto Rico, ‘Energy Dominance’ Is Just A Newname For Us Colonialism, Catalina M. De Onis
For Many In Puerto Rico, ‘Energy Dominance’ Is Just A Newname For Us Colonialism, Catalina M. De Onis
University of Montana Staff Publications
The Trump administration has made “achieving American energy dominance” a central policy goal. President Trump asserts that “energy dominance” requires expanding nuclear development, increasing coal and natural gas exports, building transnational pipelines and accessing offshore oil and gas deposits. These efforts, Trump contends, will maximize the nation’s “boundless capacity” for energy production, including spreading U.S. fossil fuels around the globe, to showcase its independence from foreign oil.

Networks Of Change: Extending Alaska-Based Communication Networks To Meet The Challenges Of The Anthropocene, Richard E. Hum
Networks Of Change: Extending Alaska-Based Communication Networks To Meet The Challenges Of The Anthropocene, Richard E. Hum
Communication
The Anthropocene is a contested term. As I conceptualize it throughout this dissertation, the Anthropocene is defined by an increased coupling of social and environmental systems at the global scale such that the by-products of human processes dominate the global stratigraphic record. Additionally, I connect the term to a worldview that sees this increased coupling as an existential threat to humanity's ability to sustain life on the planet. Awareness that the planet-wide scale of this coupling is fundamentally a new element in earth history is implicit in both understandings. How individuals and communities are impacted by this change varies greatly …
The Place Of Private Property In Land Use Law: A Relational Examination Of Ontario's Quarry Conflicts, Estair Suarez Van Wagner
The Place Of Private Property In Land Use Law: A Relational Examination Of Ontario's Quarry Conflicts, Estair Suarez Van Wagner
PhD Dissertations
Land use law structures the way we make decisions about how we live together and with the world around us. In doing so, it shapes our relationships not only with the people around us, but with the places we inhabit and encounter. This dissertation examines how land use law structures the relations between people and the more-than-human world to uphold the ownership model of property relations and to privilege particular forms of land use. Through documentary and interview-based qualitative research, it presents an eco-relational examination of one of the most contentious land uses in Ontario aggregate mineral extraction.

A Roundtable On Cross-Sector Collaboration And Resource Alignment For Health Equity: Meeting Summary, Onyemaechi Nweke
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Cross-sector collaboration is a highly recommended strategy to eliminate health inequities nationally and globally. In the federal sector, it is evolving into an important approach for solving complex social problems, as evidenced by its steady proliferation the past few decades. Despite the increased adoption of cross-sector collaboration, it is still not a default strategy or preeminent option for managing complex social problems. In September 2015, the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET) hosted a Roundtable event to discuss opportunities and strategies to foster widespread adoption of cross-sector collaboration and resource alignment. The Roundtable featured several expert panelists and participants from …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Background: Chronic diseases are an important contributor to morbidity and mortality among racial/ethnic minority, low-income, and other under-resourced populations. Given that state health departments (and their chronic disease programs) play a significant role in providing population and preventive health services, their capacity to promote health equity is an important consideration in national efforts to address chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine capacity needs of state chronic disease programs with respect to promoting health equity.
Methods: In 2015, the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) conducted a survey of its members that work within a …

Eliminating health disparities is a priority across national agenda and initiatives such as the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities (NPA), the National Prevention Strategy, and Healthy People 2020. To advance this priority under the NPA, the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET), which is an NPA federal cross-sector and collaborative platform, initiated a voluntary pilot “health equity mapping” exercise in 2014. This exercise served as a strategy to clarify the strategic alignment between participant federal partner program missions, goals, and activities, and the goal to end health disparities and promote health equity. The mapping process included an …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
In April 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) launched the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities (NPA) to increase the effectiveness of efforts to eliminate health disparities by coordinating partners, leaders, and stakeholders committed to action. At its core, the NPA is an experiment in collaboration that relies heavily on those on the front line who are actively engaged in minority health work at multiple levels. It gives them the responsibility of identifying and helping to define core actions, new approaches, and new partnerships that ultimately will help to …
Local Perspectives Of Sustainable Development, Ryan J. Stefani
Local Perspectives Of Sustainable Development, Ryan J. Stefani
Capstone Collection
Abstract
The mainstream school of thought and literature surrounding sustainable development contains numerous terms, assumptions, and perspectives which creates a myriad of meanings. As the academic literature attempts to understand this wide field of study, the perspectives have only grown instead of solidifying into a consensus. This paper first presents a literature review which explores current views and perspectives of how the terms ‘sustainable’ and ‘development’ independent of each other are used and how, by combining these terms, create even more perspectives and concepts with sometimes conflicting meanings. This paper then discusses the difficulties of using the term sustainable development …

Quicksilver Politics: Mercury Narratives And Environmental Governance, Andrew Pearce Carter
Open Access Dissertations
Environmental mercury poses a potentially serious health threat to human populations, particularly through bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes which can concentrate ambient mercury to dangerous levels in fish, a food source for a significant percentage of the earth’s population. Emitted from both natural and anthropogenic sources, mass industrialization over the past few decades has significantly increased the amount of mercury in the environment, increasing health risks for humans and other organisms. A pollutant of both local and global concern, regulating environmental mercury risk has proven exceedingly difficult due to scientific uncertainty and numerous cultural, psychological, economic, and political factors. This dissertation …

Nafta And Its Effect On Corn, Migration And Human Rights In Mexico, Thomas Nisivaco
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This paper will attempt to show that U.S. corn subsidies that has led to the flooding of Mexican markets with corn, is the primary factor responsible for the internal displacement of rural farmers in Mexico. The NAFTA trade agreement has eliminated trade barriers and placed Mexico’s domestically produced corn in direct competition with U.S. highly subsidized corn that has led to Mexican corn farmers, who comprise the majority of the country’s agricultural sector, to experience a drastic decline in the price of their product causing them to have difficulties in sustaining a living in this market. Therefore, we can see …
