Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

This study focuses on the CEO-asserted critical need for sustainability in corporate strategy and MBA student perceptions of the extent to which their respective programs prepare them to handle sustainability challenges successfully. Students in one Polish and two U.S. mid-tier MBA programs were surveyed regarding their perceptions of four issues: 1) the link between sustainability practices and corporate performance; 2) the barriers to embedding sustainability practices in their current job; 3) the effects of being a sustainability advocate on their careers; and 4) the efficacy of their MBA programs in fostering leadership perspectives and skills related to sustainability. While students …

Improvisational Teaching For Emergent Bilinguals, Denchai Prabjandee Dec 2017

Improvisational Teaching For Emergent Bilinguals, Denchai Prabjandee

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

The present collaborative ethnographic case study was design to explore teaching practices for English Language Learners (ELLs) in the United States, hereafter called "emergent bilinguals" (García, 2009). Through the theoretical lens of ethnographic vulnerability (Behar, 1996), I conducted 40-hour observations, four interviews, and artifact collections. By using an impressionist tale writing style throughout this article (Maanen, 2011), this paper presents the journey of an elementary school teacher who tries to employ classroom practices, teaching strategies, and assessments to educate emergent bilinguals. Drawing on ethnographic data, I propose an effective teaching approach called improvisational teaching. This teaching approach may be beneficial …

The study draws on qualitative data collected from eight focus groups segmented by gender and consisting of adult farmers in two villages in central Mozambique. Special attention was given to the types of ICTs that farmers have access to and the dissemination of agriculture information through various ICTs. Findings indicate that the characteristics of ICTs explain why cell phone and radio use is prevalent, while access to television remains limited. The type of information accessed also varied by ICT type, …

Energy And The Rural Sociological Imagination, Thomas M. Beckley Dec 2017

Energy And The Rural Sociological Imagination, Thomas M. Beckley

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Energy is the lifeblood of any society. It drives a society’s material culture and the reproduction of that culture. It is essential for the production of food, shelter, clothing, and for transportation, trade, and communication. This article makes the case for a rural sociology of energy. Relative to the impact that energy issues have for rural places and people, energy, as a subject area, has been understudied by rural sociologists and is infrequently represented in the journals devoted to rural sociology and rural studies. Energy production and distribution activities such as coal mining, uranium mining, hydroelectric dams, wind farms, nuclear, …

Heterogeneity Of Rural Consumer Perceptions Of Health Service Access Across Four Regions Of Victoria, Daniel Terry, Kaye Ervin, Alan Crouch, Kristen Glenister, Lisa Bourke

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Access to a range of services, including health care, ranks among the key determinants of health and wellbeing. It varies with both health system supply factors and consumer demand characteristics. For rural populations, access to health services can be restricted for a variety of reasons, contributing to poorer health outcomes compared with metropolitan populations. Access to health care differs between communities, despite commonly being seen as homogenous in terms of lack of service and poor access. This article seeks to examine consumer perceptions of access to health service in four shires in rural Victoria and explore differences between rural areas. …

Paddy Crop Disease Diagnosis Expert System Design Using Fuzzy Logic, D K Sreekantha

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) has reported that India is one of the largest food grains producing country. The paddy production/hector of land which is highest in Egypt is 9.5, while India is producing only 2.9. India’s lower paddy productivity/hector and higher cost for production indicates that there is scope for improvement in many aspects of paddy crop production. The researchers have carried out a survey on the diagnosis of diseases on paddy crop using expert systems and aimed at designing a prototype expert system for coastal regions of India. This paper presents an interactive expert system model that identifies the …

Structure Or Relationship? Rethinking Family Influences On Juvenile Delinquency In Malaysia, Tan Bee Piang, Zuraini Jubail Osman, Noor Banu Mahadir

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

A broken family structure and poor family relationship are seen as contributing to delinquent behavior in different ways. Despite Malaysian society being strongly focused on family values, there have been significant increases in the rates of both divorce and single-parent families. Thus, there is the question of whether these changes in family structure are a contributing factor to the increasing rate of juvenile delinquency seen in recent years. This study aims to examine the relative influences of family structure and family relationship on juvenile delinquent behavior in Malaysia. A sample of 196 juveniles from two rehabilitation centers in Malaysia participated …

A Collaborative Intervention: Measuring The Impact Of A Flipped Classroom Approach On Library One-Shots For The Composition Classroom, Maureen Garvey, Anne Hays, Amy F. Stempler

Collaborative Librarianship

Instruction Librarians teaching one-shot information literacy (IL) sessions to freshman composition classes at academic universities across the U.S. experience a familiar set of issues. In response, librarians have produced a bounty of literature detailing flipped instruction approaches, collaborative case studies with outside departments, and critiques of the library one-shot, but there is little research describing attempts to combine these three approaches in one study. Both a case study and an impact-assessment study, this article describes a collaborative intervention between the Library Instruction team, the Writing Across the Curriculum program, and the English Department, with the purpose of studying the intervention’s …

A Case For Domain-Specific Research Into Seafarers’ Use Of English As A Lingua Franca, Achala K. Dissanayake

Journal of Innovation in Science, Engineering and Technology

Due to ships’ crews and offshore personnel being multicultural and multilingual, more than one variety of English is used in communication in ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore and on-board domains. Among these speakers of many Englishes, English is being used as a lingua franca. The use of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in this domain is characterized by features of the many varieties of English spoken by the interlocutors as well as characteristics of the native languages of the speakers engaged in ELF. Therefore, the incorporation of both World Englishes (WE) and ELF knowledge into the pedagogy of Maritime English (ME) is …

The Scope Of Colonial Writing In Enhancing Sri Lankan Cultural Diplomacy, Achala K. Dissanayake Dec 2017

The Scope Of Colonial Writing In Enhancing Sri Lankan Cultural Diplomacy, Achala K. Dissanayake

Journal of Innovation in Science, Engineering and Technology

Culture is a necessary ingredient in the definition of a nation. Cultural diplomacy is the use of cultural values and norms by nations in the processes of strengthening, revising, or redefining their national identities both within the country and externally. Works of literature are among the many tools of cultural diplomacy. As a source of soft power widely used by countries in their relationships with foreign nations, cultural diplomacy has been criticized from a postcolonial perspective for contributing to the homogenization of cultures and nations. This paper argues that, where Sri Lankan cultural diplomacy is concerned, certain literary representations of …

The Role Of The Postcolonial Indian Writer In Promoting Hinduism With Reference To Mysticism, K. S. A. Weerasena Dec 2017

The Role Of The Postcolonial Indian Writer In Promoting Hinduism With Reference To Mysticism, K. S. A. Weerasena

Journal of Innovation in Science, Engineering and Technology

Postcolonial Indian writing is heavily influenced by the religion of the colonizers and socio-cultural practices of the Westerners. Many studies are conducted to understand how postcolonial literature attempts to counteract alienation by asserting the richness and validity of native cultures in an effort to restore pride in indigenous practices and traditions. However, little research has been conducted to understand the role of the postcolonial Indian writers in glorifying their native cultures and religions which led to identify their works with mysticism. This paper explores the cultural hybridity of the postcolonial Indian writers and their effort to highlight the importance of …

Pirate Nests And The Rise Of The British Empire, 1570–1740 By Mark G. Hanna, John Donoghue

History: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Mark Hanna’s important book makes two very valuable contributions to the history of the British Atlantic. First, it recovers piracy’s vital part in colonial economic growth during the seventeenth century. Secondly, it explains piracy’s ultimate demise in the early eighteenth century by tracing the regulatory revolution that turned an assemblage of wayward Atlantic colonies into a profitable commercial empire.

Money Over Marriage: Marriage Importance As A Mediator Between Materialism And Marital Satisfaction, Ashley B. Lebaron, Heather H. Kelley, Jason S. Carroll Dec 2017

Money Over Marriage: Marriage Importance As A Mediator Between Materialism And Marital Satisfaction, Ashley B. Lebaron, Heather H. Kelley, Jason S. Carroll

Faculty Publications

While the negative relationship between materialism and marital satisfaction is well documented, mediators that possibly explain this association have not been widely explored. Based on the Incompatibility of Materialism and Children Model and Marital Paradigms Theory, this article explores the perception of marriage importance as a potential mediator between materialism and marital satisfaction. Using a sample of 1310 married individuals, we found evidence of partial mediation in that materialism was negatively associated with perception of marriage importance, and this association partially explained why being materialistic was associated with lower marital satisfaction. Thus, as counselors, therapists, and financial planners work with …

Skin Beauty As Erotic Capital And Production Of “Luckiness”: A Look At Menopausal Women Using Hormone Therapy Replacement For Skin Treatment In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Huynh Thi Xuan Tam, Pimpawun Boonmongkon, Xiaochuan Wang, Thomas E. Guadamuz

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

According to social and cultural constructs of aging and femininity, menopausal women‘s bodily transitions cause them to initiate hormone therapy replacement (HRT) to restore their youth and beauty. For example, they might take HRT to improve their wrinkled and sagging skin. A problem emerges, however, because there is little systematic research that explains the specific factors that motivate women to take HRT for the purpose of anti-aging skin treatment. This study aims to examine the intertwined social and cultural contexts influencing menopausal women’s choice of HRT in a dermatological hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Four dermatologists and 15 …

Senkaku/Diaoyu Island Dispute And The Reconstruction Of China As Japan’S “Other”, Michal Kolmaš Dec 2017

Senkaku/Diaoyu Island Dispute And The Reconstruction Of China As Japan’S “Other”, Michal Kolmaš

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

In the recent years, much has been written about Japan’s security “normalization,” that is, the resurgence of Japan as a “proactive contributor to world peace.” This article aims to add to this debate, but it will approach it from a novel angle. Basing its epistemology in critical security studies, I investigate the relationship between national identity and Japan’s foreign policy (i.e., its normalization). The article dismisses realist assumptions that Japan’s security rejuvenation is a reaction to the changing balance of power in Asia. Rather, it argues that the normalization is a product of Japan’s discursive practice of victimization, that is, …
