Implications Of Psychotherapy And Low-Dose Medication Following First-Episode Psychosis, Alyssa Woolley Jan 2017

Implications Of Psychotherapy And Low-Dose Medication Following First-Episode Psychosis, Alyssa Woolley

University Honors Theses

Schizophrenia, a mental disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thoughts and speech, is typically treated using antipsychotic medication and therapy. Randomized trials focusing on schizophrenia have provided evidence that early intervention, which entails talk therapy combined with low-dose antipsychotic medication directly following onset of psychosis, is most effective in treating symptoms. The literature review detailed in this paper is intended to help better understand the relationship between low-dosage antipsychotic medication, pair with regular psychotherapy, and how that relationship can help patients to adhere to treatment for long-term remission.

Relationship Between Social Anxiety & Facebook Surveillance, Jordan J. Rasmussen Jan 2017

Relationship Between Social Anxiety & Facebook Surveillance, Jordan J. Rasmussen

University Honors Theses

The advent of social media has created a new type of information seeking to reduce uncertainty: extractive information seeking, which refers to when people seek information about their target by perusing their online social media profiles. The social compensation hypothesis suggests that those who suffer from social anxiety in face-to-face contexts might use a computer-mediated communication context (such as Facebook) to mitigate their face-to-face anxiety. The goal of this study is to find a relationship between general social anxiety (GSA) and interpersonal electronic surveillance (IES), a type of extractive information seeking. Results from this study indicate that while there is …

The Politics Of Gardening In J.M. Coetzee's Life & Times Of Michael K, Jessica F. Moore Jan 2017

The Politics Of Gardening In J.M. Coetzee's Life & Times Of Michael K, Jessica F. Moore

University Honors Theses

This essay explores the role of gardening in J.M. Coetzee's novel Life & Times of Michael K. In the novel, the main character, Michael K (shortened to K), works and identifies as a gardener. K works in the city garden of Wynberg Park and also gardens pumpkins and mealies on his own throughout the novel. This thesis examines the gardening in Life & Times of Michael K and argues that K's gardening acts a form of political resistance to the oppressive governance of South Africa, both in the novel and in reality. To arrive at the conclusion of K's gardening …

Investigating The Sources Of Decadal-Scale Property Changes In Antarctic Bottom Water In The Southeast Indian Ocean (80-90°E), Kimberly Gottschalk Jan 2017

Investigating The Sources Of Decadal-Scale Property Changes In Antarctic Bottom Water In The Southeast Indian Ocean (80-90°E), Kimberly Gottschalk

University Honors Theses

A recognizable warming and freshening of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) throughout much of the Southern Ocean is one of the major findings of the international long-line hydrographic programs of 1990’s and the 2000's. A 2016 GO-SHIP repeat of the I08S line (80-90ºE) in the southeast Indian Ocean found continued, but weaker, AABW warming and significantly stronger freshening in the Antarctic-Australian Basin (A-AB). It has been proposed that the 2010 B9b iceberg calving along the Adélie Land Coast may be linked to this pronounced freshening. The present study seeks to affirm or challenge this hypothesis through a quantitative investigation into the …

Microfinance: The Impacts Of A Poverty Reduction Approach And Financial Systems Approach On Poor Rural Households In Vietnam, Cardin A. Le

University Honors Theses

The microfinance industry has evolved from its earliest roots as a social movement to a multifaceted financial services industry for the poor. The aim of this research is to add to the existing literature by exploring the poverty reduction approach and financial systems approach to microfinance and its implications on poor rural households in Vietnam. It does this through analyzing three main areas: (i) a comprehensive assessment of microfinance in Vietnam; (ii) analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the poverty reduction and financial system approaches; and (iii) evaluating the impact of access to credit on household poverty reduction in rural …

Predictive Policing On Portland State University's Campus, Kiley D. Enger Jan 2017

Predictive Policing On Portland State University's Campus, Kiley D. Enger

University Honors Theses

Although many want to believe that campuses are safe and free of crime acts, there is a reason for the campus public safety department. Reed College, Lewis and Clark College, and University of Portland all rank as safer schools than Portland State University (PSU) (Niche, 2017). The parking garages and lots in particular have a large number of crimes (Enger, 2016). Using predictive analytics to forecast crime is becoming very popular with large police departments within the last few years. It emphasizes the importance of collecting crime data and created a use for past incident reports. The goal of the …

Cooperative Learning Through Storytelling And The Plant World, Emma Hathaway Jan 2017

Cooperative Learning Through Storytelling And The Plant World, Emma Hathaway

University Honors Theses

At a time when young people are disengaging in school, how do we begin to acknowledge that we, as a nation have failed them and how might we look at storytelling and the plant world to establish more inclusive practices in education? Data from a 2015 American Community Survey suggests that in the state of Hawai'i, 40% of public school 8th graders do not meet the Department of Education (DOE) standards in mathematics. This fall, the National Center for Educational Statistics noted that over half of the country’s public schools reported incidents of criminal activity. As a way to …

Patient, Victim, Or Survivor?: An Analysis Of Sane Nursing Curriculum Bias, Samantha D. Gardner Jan 2017

Patient, Victim, Or Survivor?: An Analysis Of Sane Nursing Curriculum Bias, Samantha D. Gardner

University Honors Theses

This study assesses the SANE program training for the Oregon Sexual Assault Task Force to identify gaps that fail to address bias, causing SANE nurses to provide less-effective care to people who have experienced interpersonal violence. This thesis will address a particular question: How does the SANE nursing curriculum address bias? When reviewing the literature, it is clear that both biases and gaps in SANE training negatively affect survivors experiences. In order to address both biases and gaps, I conducted an initial read read-through of the curriculum text. Next, I made memos on notecards of the key words, phrases, and …

Women And The Wilderness: A Review Of Barriers To Participation, Current Coping Strategies, And Guidance For Future Programs, Naiyear Khajavei Jan 2017

Women And The Wilderness: A Review Of Barriers To Participation, Current Coping Strategies, And Guidance For Future Programs, Naiyear Khajavei

University Honors Theses

This literature review discusses the obstacles that women face in participating in outdoor recreation, the ways in which they are currently navigating these obstacles, and discusses how the currently literature (and the gaps within it) can inform our future research and policy making. The obstacles women currently face in wilderness recreation surround gender roles and social expectations, lack of early skill-development and confidence, and a gendered geographic fear. Currently, women are navigating these obstacles by either conforming or rejecting gender roles in their participation, choosing to develop skills in female-only environments, and taking means to increase perceived safety such as …

Bulk Viscous Corrections To Screening And Damping In Qcd At High Temperatures, Qianqian Du, Adrian Dumitru, Yun Guo, Michael Strickland Jan 2017

Bulk Viscous Corrections To Screening And Damping In Qcd At High Temperatures, Qianqian Du, Adrian Dumitru, Yun Guo, Michael Strickland

Publications and Research

Non-equilibrium corrections to the distribution functions of quarks and gluons in a hot and dense QCD medium modify the “hard thermal loops” (HTL). The HTLs determine the retarded, advanced, and symmetric (time-ordered) propagators for gluons with soft momenta as well as the Debye screening and Landau damping mass scales. We compute such corrections to a thermal as well as to a non-thermal fixed point. The screening and damping mass scales are sensitive to the bulk pressure and hence to (pseudo-) critical dynamical scaling of the bulk viscosity in the vicinity of a second-order critical point. This could be reflected in …

The Relationship Between Concentrations Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Moss And Tree Cover In Portland Or, Andrew S. Mautz Jan 2017

The Relationship Between Concentrations Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Moss And Tree Cover In Portland Or, Andrew S. Mautz

University Honors Theses

This study is a spatial analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) across the Portland Metro area using data collected from samples of moss tissue (Orthotrichum spp.), and an exploration of the relationship between PAH deposition and urban tree canopy in Portland Oregon. PAH are a class of common environmental pollutants created by the incomplete combustion of organic materials; largely via anthropocentric activity. Species of lichens and mosses have been shown to be suitable bioindicators of air pollutants (including PAH contamination) in other studies. Urban tree canopy is known to mitigate other environmental pollutants, as well as provide numerous …

Executive Control Mechanisms In Bilingualism: Beyond Speed Of Processing, Klara Marton, Mira Goral, Luca Campanelli, Jungmee Yoon, Loraine K. Obler Jan 2017

Executive Control Mechanisms In Bilingualism: Beyond Speed Of Processing, Klara Marton, Mira Goral, Luca Campanelli, Jungmee Yoon, Loraine K. Obler

Publications and Research

The question of interest in this study was whether bilingual individuals show superior executive control compared to monolingual participants. Findings are mixed, with studies showing advantage, disadvantage, or no difference between bilingual and monolingual speakers. In this study, we used different experimental conditions to examine implicit learning, resistance to interference, monitoring, and switching, independently. In addition, we matched our monolingual and bilingual participants on baseline response time. Bilingual participants demonstrated faster implicit learning, greater resistance to interference, more efficient switching compared to monolingual participants. The groups did not differ in monitoring. In conclusion, depending on task complexity and on the …

Open Access And The Graduate Author: A Dissertation Anxiety Manual, Jill Cirasella, Polly Thistlethwaite Jan 2017

Open Access And The Graduate Author: A Dissertation Anxiety Manual, Jill Cirasella, Polly Thistlethwaite

Publications and Research

The process of completing a dissertation is stressful—deadlines are scary, editing is hard, formatting is tricky, and defending is terrifying. (And, of course, postgraduate employment is often uncertain.) Now that dissertations are deposited and distributed electronically, students must perform yet another anxiety-inducing task: deciding whether they want to make their dissertations immediately open access (OA) or, at universities that require OA, coming to terms with openness. For some students, mostly in the humanities and some of the social sciences, who hope to transform their dissertations into books, OA has become a bogeyman, a supposed saboteur of book contracts and destroyer …

Schrödinger Theory Of Electrons In Electromagnetic Fields: New Perspectives, Viraht Sahni, Xiao-Yin Pan Jan 2017

Schrödinger Theory Of Electrons In Electromagnetic Fields: New Perspectives, Viraht Sahni, Xiao-Yin Pan

Publications and Research

The Schrödinger theory of electrons in an external electromagnetic field is described from the new perspective of the individual electron. The perspective is arrived at via the time-dependent "Quantal Newtonian" law (or differential virial theorem). (The time-independent law, a special case, provides a similar description of stationary-state theory). These laws are in terms of "classical" fields whose sources are quantal expectations of Hermitian operators taken with respect to the wave function. The laws reveal the following physics: (a) in addition to the external field, each electron experiences an internal field whose components are representative of a specific property of the …

Rules And Mechanisms For Efficient Two-Stage Learning In Neural Circuits, Tiberiu Teşileanu, Bence Ölveczky, Vijay Balasubramanian Jan 2017

Rules And Mechanisms For Efficient Two-Stage Learning In Neural Circuits, Tiberiu Teşileanu, Bence Ölveczky, Vijay Balasubramanian

Publications and Research

Trial-and-error learning requires evaluating variable actions and reinforcing successful variants. In songbirds, vocal exploration is induced by LMAN, the output of a basal ganglia-related circuit that also contributes a corrective bias to the vocal output. This bias is gradually consolidated in RA, a motor cortex analogue downstream of LMAN. We develop a new model of such two-stage learning. Using stochastic gradient descent, we derive how the activity in ‘tutor’ circuits (e.g., LMAN) should match plasticity mechanisms in ‘student’ circuits (e.g., RA) to achieve efficient learning. We further describe a reinforcement learning framework through which the tutor can build its teaching …

Emancipatory Rural Politics: Confronting Authoritarian Populism, Ian Scooner, Marc Edelman, Saturnino M. Borras Jr., Ruth Hall, Wendy Wolford, Ben White Jan 2017

Emancipatory Rural Politics: Confronting Authoritarian Populism, Ian Scooner, Marc Edelman, Saturnino M. Borras Jr., Ruth Hall, Wendy Wolford, Ben White

Publications and Research

A new political moment is underway. Although there are significant differences in how this is constituted in different places, one manifestation of the new moment is the rise of distinct forms of authoritarian populism. In this opening paper of the JPS Forum series on ‘Authoritarian Populism and the Rural World’, we explore the relationship between these new forms of politics and rural areas around the world. We ask how rural transformations have contributed to deepening regressive national politics, and how rural areas shape and are shaped by these politics. We propose a global agenda for research, debate and action, which …

Poesía Amorosa De Una Erudita Del Xvii: Traducción Y Creación En El Pastor Fido De Isabel Correa, Almudena Vidorreta

Publications and Research

Library Information Sharing. Best Practices And Trends. Challenges And Prospects, Beth Posner Jan 2017

Library Information Sharing. Best Practices And Trends. Challenges And Prospects, Beth Posner

Publications and Research

Libraries share information with each other, through interlibrary loan services, so that their library users can access more of the world of information than is available in any one library. When supported with enough budget, staff and authority to do so, library resource sharing specialists can facilitate information access in a variety of traditional and innovative ways, including and beyond lending and borrowing print and digital information. Best practices, trends and new solutions for library resource sharing are reviewed. International cooperation is also highlighted.

Opening Education, Linking To Communities: The #Inq13 Collective’S Participatory Open Online Course (Pooc) In East Harlem, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz, Polly Thistlethwaite, Jessie Daniels Jan 2017

Opening Education, Linking To Communities: The #Inq13 Collective’S Participatory Open Online Course (Pooc) In East Harlem, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz, Polly Thistlethwaite, Jessie Daniels

Publications and Research

Drawing on experiences with the JustPublics@365 participatory open online course, or POOC, this chapter discusses the politics and possibilities of open access pedagogy and the broader engagement with communities that academics might achieve. We situated the POOC in New York City’s East Harlem neighborhood and to use the course to form an academic-community partnership. Rather than replicate the broadcast model employed by many MOOCs, in which an instructor delivers education to a broad audience of otherwise disconnected students, the POOC sought to engage participants through open site-based and online experiences, including lectures and class readings posted openly for any member …

On Parsimony And Tautology In The Study Of Acute Coronary Syndrome, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent Jan 2017

On Parsimony And Tautology In The Study Of Acute Coronary Syndrome, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent

Publications and Research

In a recent study, Zhang et al. concluded that burnout was associated with poor physical function and low quality of life after acute coronary syndrome (ACS). In our estimation, the authors' study has at least two unnoticed, though major, methodological limitations: not controlling for depression and using a burnout scale that is a questionable choice.

Burnout Symptoms: Depressive Manifestations Under Psychosocial Labels?, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent Jan 2017

Burnout Symptoms: Depressive Manifestations Under Psychosocial Labels?, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent

Publications and Research

It can be concluded that burnout symptoms represent depressive symptoms under nonmedical labels. Our analysis supports the view that burnout is synonymous with depression and constitutes a roadblock to transdisciplinary communication.

Burnout And The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid Axis: A Methodological Comment, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent Jan 2017

Burnout And The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid Axis: A Methodological Comment, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent

Publications and Research

Because (a) burnout overlaps with depression and (b) depression has been associated with altered functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis changes in the activity of the HPT axis can be expected in burnout. Most probably, Guo et al.’s (2017) results are flawed by a severe form of the “healthy worker effect.”

Burnout Or Depression: Both Individual And Social Issue, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent Jan 2017

Burnout Or Depression: Both Individual And Social Issue, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent

Publications and Research

In view of the profound problems attached to the construct of burnout, we recommended that occupational health specialists focus on (job-related) depression rather than burnout to help workers more effectively. Epstein and Privitera (April 8, 1398) rejected our recommendation on the grounds that burnout is not a “purely individual syndrome”. Problematically, Epstein and Privitera attributed to us an idea that is not ours. In these authors’ view, equating burnout with depression is synonymous with mistakenly individualising a social problem. For two reasons, the argument that depression cannot replace burnout because burnout is a social problem whereas depression is an individual …

On The Overlap Of Vital Exhaustion And Depression, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent Jan 2017

On The Overlap Of Vital Exhaustion And Depression, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent

Publications and Research

Our reexamination of the symptoms and main measure of vital exhasution (VE) suggests that the overlap of VE with depression has been problematically underestimated due to inconsistent comparisons and blindness to definitional similarities. In our view, the case of VE is emblematic of a trend toward construct proliferation. Many ‘‘new’’ constructs are introduced in the literature precipitously, with insufficient examination of their added value, and based on ‘‘linguistic contortions’’ and anecdotal evidence rather than robust empirical findings and sound theorizing. Such constructs are often ‘‘distinguished’’ from existing ones on the basis of specious arguments and missing-the-point conclusions. This is for …

Vital Exhaustion, Burnout, And Other Avatars Of Depression, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent Jan 2017

Vital Exhaustion, Burnout, And Other Avatars Of Depression, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent

Publications and Research

In our view, there is a worrying tendency in psychology and medicine to let proliferate “depression-like” constructs—a transgression of the scientific canon of parsimony. The problem is not limited to vital exhaustion (VE). Burnout, a condition akin to VE, has been shown to problematically overlap with depression. Compassion fatigue, a condition that shows particularly blurred definitional contours, is also uncomfortably close to depressive symptomatology. The construct of neurasthenia may be part of this confusing trend as well, although neurasthenia has been elevated to the status of nosological category in the ICD. Construct proliferation jeopardizes knowledge growth by undermining theory building …

Defining Physician Burnout, And Differentiating Between Burnout And Depression—I, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 2017

Defining Physician Burnout, And Differentiating Between Burnout And Depression—I, Bianchi Renzo, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

A redefinition of burnout as a depressive condition is called for so that the harmful effects of unresolvable job stress can be more accurately and comprehensively assessed. As research compellingly suggests, reducing the harmful effects of unresolvable job stress to the experience of burnout's dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment is mistaken in that it denies the depressive core of the syndrome referred to as “burnout.” Replacing the notion of burnout by the concept of job-induced depression would help us be more effective in the management of occupational adversity.
