The Effects Of An Intervention Program (Voyager) Through Response To Intervention Framework On 4th Grade Reading Achievement, Lisa Harris Jan 2017

The Effects Of An Intervention Program (Voyager) Through Response To Intervention Framework On 4th Grade Reading Achievement, Lisa Harris

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The ability to read fluently has been confirmed as an indicator of good comprehension and thus academic success. Studies have shown that most students in the U.S. are reading below their grade levels. The U.S. has demanded continuously that the education system increase the outcomes of education for all children. In order to improve children’s reading educational needs, effective screening, assessments, and intervention tools need to be implemented properly in U.S. school curriculum. The purpose of this nonequivalent control group study is to investigate the effectiveness of an intervention program in improving the oral reading fluency rates of fourth graders …

The Girl Factor: How Single-Sex Learning Environments Affect African American Girls' Discipline Referral Rate, Devonne Lampkin Jan 2017

The Girl Factor: How Single-Sex Learning Environments Affect African American Girls' Discipline Referral Rate, Devonne Lampkin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The mission of the single-sex education is to provide learning environments that will bring out the best in each student and will provide opportunities for success that may not be available in co-educational settings. Several explanations have been suggested for differences between single-sex and coeducational settings in educational processes and in student outcomes. Schools that implement single-sex schools do so with the hope of decreasing the social pressures and distractions that will lead to a decrease in office discipline referrals which unenviably lead to suspensions. The purpose of this ex-post facto casual comparative study examines the impact single-sex schools have …

Top projects will move forward for further assessment, design and construction, helping the city achieve its water quality improvement goals. The scoring system may be used to evaluate additional projects in the future.

Impact Of Speed On Vehicle Safety On Urban Arterial Roadways, Andrew C. Vosper Jan 2017

Impact Of Speed On Vehicle Safety On Urban Arterial Roadways, Andrew C. Vosper

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Vehicle speed has long been one, if not the primary contributing factor to crashes, influencing both the probability and severity. Within the Portland metro area arterials have the highest serious crash rate per road mile and vehicle miles travelled. (Metro, 2012) The purpose of this research is to compile vehicle speeds along select arterial roadways within the Portland metro area and comparing it to applicable crash data. The roadway segment of SE Foster Road between SE 52nd avenues and SE 82nd avenues was selected, due to the simplicity of the physical as-built roadway properties along with available Bluetooth …

Seismic Retrofit Case Study Of Reinforced Concrete Bridges With Buckling Restrained Braces, Michael K. Miotke Jan 2017

Seismic Retrofit Case Study Of Reinforced Concrete Bridges With Buckling Restrained Braces, Michael K. Miotke

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Many highway bridges in Oregon have been designed with minimal considerations for seismic hazard and are in need of retrofit. Although buckling restrained braces (BRBs) are not necessarily a new concept, using them to seismically retrofit bridges is. This case study investigates the BRB retrofit concept as compared to traditional retrofit measures for a sample of typical vulnerable bridges in Oregon. The objectives of evaluating these cases were to determine the feasibility of the concept both in terms of performance as well as construction costs. This study builds on the ongoing research at Portland State University into the development of …

Trace Metals In Stormwater: Alternative Best Management Practices, Jennifer Ibeth Mora Jan 2017

Trace Metals In Stormwater: Alternative Best Management Practices, Jennifer Ibeth Mora

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Heavy metals, such as copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), are considered hazardous in natural waters due to their toxicity and non-biodegradability. The focus of this study is to use batch experiments to investigate the heavy metal (Cu and Zn) removal efficiency of perlite and EarthliteTM to improve in-situ filtration systems for stormwater catchment basins. Stormwater samples from two field sites in Portland, OR, chosen to represent a high-use commercial site and high-traffic urban road, were characterized to inform experimental design and compare to values found in literature. The Linear, Freundlich, and Langmuir isotherm models were used to describe equilibrium …

Proteoglycan Neofunctions: Regulation Of Inflammation And Autophagy In Cancer Biology., Liliana Schaefer, Claudia Tredup, Maria A. Gubbiotti, Renato V. Iozzo Jan 2017

Proteoglycan Neofunctions: Regulation Of Inflammation And Autophagy In Cancer Biology., Liliana Schaefer, Claudia Tredup, Maria A. Gubbiotti, Renato V. Iozzo

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Inflammation and autophagy have emerged as prominent issues in the context of proteoglycan signaling. In particular, two small, leucine-rich proteoglycans, biglycan and decorin, play pivotal roles in the regulation of these vital cellular pathways and, as such, are intrinsically involved in cancer initiation and progression. In this minireview, we will address novel functions of biglycan and decorin in inflammation and autophagy, and analyze new emerging signaling events triggered by these proteoglycans, which directly or indirectly modulate these processes. We will critically discuss the dual role of proteoglycan-driven inflammation and autophagy in tumor biology, and delineate the potential mechanisms through which …

Negotiation Is Changing, Noam Ebner Jan 2017

Negotiation Is Changing, Noam Ebner

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Many changes – those we notice, and those that escape our attention until we are quite a ways down a new path – are only the tip of the iceberg of the change that individuals and society are experiencing as a result of the technological developments of the past couple of decades. Introducing technology into every area of our lives, every aspect of our work, and every pocket of our clothes has far-reaching effects, which researchers are only just now uncovering.

We are not only changing our behaviors; we are being changed by our new behaviors: We now conduct our …

Sector Agnosticism And The Coming Transformation Of Education Law, Nicole S. Garnett Jan 2017

Sector Agnosticism And The Coming Transformation Of Education Law, Nicole S. Garnett

Vanderbilt Law Review

Over the past two decades, the landscape of elementary and secondary education in the United States has shifted dramatically, due to the emergence and expansion of privately provided, but publicly funded, schooling options (including both charter schools and private school choice devices like vouchers, tax credits, and educational savings accounts). This transformation in the delivery of K12 education is the result of a confluence of factors-discussed in detail below-that increasingly lead education reformers to support efforts to increase the number of high quality schools serving disadvantaged students across all three educational sectors, instead of focusing exclusively on reforming urban public …

Battle For Dominion Over Time: War Of The Calendars In Thailand, Ronald J. Brown Jan 2017

Battle For Dominion Over Time: War Of The Calendars In Thailand, Ronald J. Brown

New York School for Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS) Publications and Research

My annual January “get out of cold New York City” vacation was effectively ruined in the lounge of the Unification Theological Seminary. Shortly before I left for Thailand at the end of December 2016 I was describing my plans for a month in sunny Thailand when a student said “Oh, you’ll be in Bangkok for New Year’s. That should be wild!” Another student chimed in “And the Chinese New Year’s too!” “Double the fun and double the pleasure,” I responded, and everyone laughed.

The comment that ruined my vacation and turned it from a month of cheap red wine, beaches, …

Does Judicial Independence Matter? A Study Of The Determinants Of Administrative Litigation In An Authoritarian Regime, Wei Cui Jan 2017

Does Judicial Independence Matter? A Study Of The Determinants Of Administrative Litigation In An Authoritarian Regime, Wei Cui

All Faculty Publications

Lawsuits against the government form a part of the regular functioning of legal systems in democratic countries, and responding to such lawsuits an unavoidable part of governance. However, in the context of authoritarian regimes, administrative litigation has been viewed as a distinctively valuable institution for promoting the rule of law and individual rights. Moreover, the judiciary is portrayed as the keystone to this institution and to the rule of law in general: the more powerful and competent is the judiciary, the more it is able to “constrain government” through judicial review. Through empirical and comparative analyses of over two decades …

The Honoré-Waldron Thesis: A Comparison Of The Blend Of Ideal-Typic Categories Of Property In American, Chinese, And Australian Land Law, Paul T. Babie, John V. Orth, Charlie Xiao-Chuan Weng Jan 2017

The Honoré-Waldron Thesis: A Comparison Of The Blend Of Ideal-Typic Categories Of Property In American, Chinese, And Australian Land Law, Paul T. Babie, John V. Orth, Charlie Xiao-Chuan Weng

Faculty Publications

The Article proceeds in five parts. Part II briefly describes the principal features of each of the four ideal-typic categories of property. Parts III through V examine, respectively, the real property law of the United States, Australia, and China, demonstrating examples of each of the four ideal-typic categories, in varying mixes of ideal-types found in representatives of the two main legal traditions (common and civil). In order to test the thesis, the three jurisdictions are organized here according to the extent to which most people intuitively consider one of the ideal-types to predominate. Thus, the United States is dealt with …

Evidence-Based Assessment In Adapted Physical Education- Affective Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis, Breanna L. Ketel Jan 2017

Evidence-Based Assessment In Adapted Physical Education- Affective Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis, Breanna L. Ketel

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Currently there is a lack of evidence about assessment in adapted physical education (APE) settings concerning the justification for methods or curricula being implemented by teachers in their classrooms, that is perhaps due to a lack of understanding of the central notion of evidence-based practices (Jin & Yun, 2010). The purpose of the current investigation was to conduct a meta-analytic review that evaluates assessment practices to determine the overall effect on specific student affective outcomes. A secondary purpose was to evaluate the moderating effects of different methodological, sample, and study variables. Electronic database searches were performed in SPORT …

Do The Arts Play An Essential Role In Stem Subjects? How Steam Professional Development Affects Teacher Intent To Teach Subjects In An Integrative Manner., Stacy N. Young

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

STEAM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, is an approach to teaching that integrates these subjects together for deeper inquiry and innovation. I surveyed teachers prior to the region 1 STEAM conference in January 2017 and after to determine if they intended to change their teaching practices to integrate what they learned at the conference. Follow-up interviews were conducted to clarify survey results. Research suggests that professional development is a key component to changing teacher practices. This study seeks to extend the assertion that a conference can be the catalyst professional development tool to change teacher practice. …

Seasonal Fish And Invertebrate Communities In Three Northern California Estuaries, Katherine Osborn Jan 2017

Seasonal Fish And Invertebrate Communities In Three Northern California Estuaries, Katherine Osborn

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The majority of Northern California estuaries are small, flooded, river valleys that are largely unstudied due to their small sizes and remote locations. Yet these estuaries serve as important nursery areas for many marine fish species including rockfish, flatfish, smelt, and herring, and they are vital to anadromous species such as Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and Steelhead (O. mykiss). I sampled the summer and winter fish and invertebrate communities of the Big, Mad, and Ten Mile river estuaries. Fish were sampled via beach seine or fyke net and invertebrates were sampled via benthic cores, June 2014-June …

Equal Access, Knowledge, And Empowerment: Promoting Inclusion In Sex Education And Reproductive Health Care For Humboldt County's Spanish Speaking Population, Corinna Irwin

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Humboldt County which was a white, working class economy, has recently seen a growing Latino migrant population, doubling from 6% in the year 2000, to nearly 12% in 2016. [Census 2016] Many of these migrants are undocumented and their command of and comfort with using English ranges from fluent to nearly nothing. Women and children from this population may especially be affected by local policy and systems, due to gender and age disparities. The barriers towards health care services extend when considering sexual and reproductive health, which has wavering support and funding in the current political climate. This ethnography examines …

Truth Or Dare: Anonymous-- A Self-Proclaimed Cyber Anarchist Movement, Yancy Mejia Jan 2017

Truth Or Dare: Anonymous-- A Self-Proclaimed Cyber Anarchist Movement, Yancy Mejia

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study is based on a content analysis of 85 “Anonymous Official” YouTube videos posted online between January 2012 and July 2016. Anonymous is an amorphous hacktivist collective that challenges corporate media and threaten to expose political corruption and civil rights abuses in the United States and abroad. I organized the data around the Snow and Benford (1988, 2000) diagnostic, prognostic and motivational social movement framing concepts, and further analyzed the messages considering variations in adherence to anarchist conceptualizations of the State. In bringing together these literatures, this research explores Anonymous identity as a cyber-anarchist movement. I found that the …

Multicultural Literature: Changes In Perceptions And Attitudes In Fourth Graders, Luis A. Pelayo Zepeda Jan 2017

Multicultural Literature: Changes In Perceptions And Attitudes In Fourth Graders, Luis A. Pelayo Zepeda

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In 1954, the Supreme Court voted to end segregation in American public schools. However, this landmark decision did not end racism, discrimination, and inequality. Students of color continue to be invisible across the curriculum. This study is a qualitative teacher action research. The purpose of the study was to assess school personnel perceptions and attitudes toward multicultural education in a rural northern California district, and how the implementation of multicultural literature changes perceptions and attitudes in fourth grade students. The setting for the study took place in Steelhead Elementary, located in a rural section of Northern California. Participants included K-8 …

Listening To The Mattole: Lessons In Bioregionalism, Cannabis, And Capitalism From A Northern California Community, Nicola R. Walters Jan 2017

Listening To The Mattole: Lessons In Bioregionalism, Cannabis, And Capitalism From A Northern California Community, Nicola R. Walters

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In the United States, from the 1960s through the 1970s, nearly a million Americans left urban areas to establish themselves in rural environments; this exodus is now known as the back-to-the-land movement. Nestled in the mountains of Northern California, along a capricious river, and surrounded by natural beauty, the Mattole Valley became home to many of these back-to-the-land immigrants. Seasoned in the social and cultural movements of Berkeley and San Francisco during the 1960s, the “new settlers” transformed the social and environmental landscape of southern Humboldt County as they integrated into rural communities. The Mattole Valley offers a unique look …

Reading Latinx And Lgbtq+ Perspectives: Maya Christina Gonzalez And Equity Minded Models At Play, Elena Avilés

Chicano/Latino Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Through an equity-minded model, this essay addresses the work of Maya Christina Gonzalez and the new visions of gender she offers in children’s literature with My Colors, My World (2007). This essay frames the presence of Chicana/Latina feminist non-conforming perspectives on gender as chillante aesthetics and analyzes Gonzalez’s advancement of Latinx and LGBTQ+ standpoints in the following texts Call Me Tree/Llámale árbol (2014), I Am Free to Be Me: Gender Now Activity Book (2011) and Claiming Face: Self-empowerment Through Self-Portraiture: An Educator's Guide to Building the Powerful Link between Creativity and a Sense of Self (2010).

The Compassion Of “Compassionate Migration”, John Shuford Jan 2017

The Compassion Of “Compassionate Migration”, John Shuford

Conflict Resolution Faculty Publications and Presentations

“Compassionate migration” carries social significance and implies moral criteria. This practical notion should provide means to review, envision, and develop laws, policies, and practices for how we engage noncitizens and build political community within wider human relations. Yet “compassion” is an elastic concept; competing discourses and practices reveal conflicting meanings, assumptions, and orientations. “Compassionate migration” needs criteria upon which its “compassion” is evaluated, including how this notion evolves and what practical results it inspires—such as social cohesion, immigrant integration, strengthened community, and societal transformation. Bookending the chapter’s conceptually driven discussion are two recent, and opposite, case studies in the American …
