The Impact Of Robot Tutor Social Behaviour On Children, James R Kennedy Jan 2017

The Impact Of Robot Tutor Social Behaviour On Children, James R Kennedy

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Robotic technologies possess great potential to enter our daily lives because they have the ability to interact with our world. But our world is inherently social. Whilst humans often have a natural understanding of this complex environment, it is much more challenging for robots. The field of social Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) seeks to endow robots with the characteristics and behaviours that would allow for intuitive multimodal interaction. Education is a social process and previous research has found strong links between the social behaviour of teachers and student learning. This therefore presents a promising application opportunity for social human-robot interaction. The …

E-Invigilation Of E-Assessments, Salam Ketab Jan 2017

E-Invigilation Of E-Assessments, Salam Ketab

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

E-learning and particularly distance-based learning is becoming an increasingly important mechanism for education. A leading Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) reports a user base of 70 million students and 1.2 million teachers across 7.5 million courses. Whilst e-learning has introduced flexibility and remote/distance-based learning, there are still aspects of course delivery that rely upon traditional approaches. The most significant of these is examinations. The lack of being able to provide invigilation in a remote-mode has restricted the types of assessments, with exams or in-class test assessments proving difficult to validate. Students are still required to attend physical testing centres in order …

Are The Fama French Factors Treated As Risk? Evidence From Ceo Compensation, Jeremy Bertomeu, Edwige Cheynel, Michelle Liu-Watts Jan 2017

Are The Fama French Factors Treated As Risk? Evidence From Ceo Compensation, Jeremy Bertomeu, Edwige Cheynel, Michelle Liu-Watts

Olin Business School Faculty Research

Asset pricing theory postulates that a risk factor correlates with individuals’ marginal utility of consumption. Hence, under plausible preferences, individuals should become more risk tolerant given favorable factor returns. We show that this wealth effect predicts a positive association be- tween performance pay and factor returns. Our results support the hypothesized relationship for the market, book-to-market and momentum factors. Factors constructed from bond prices are positively associated to incentives, incrementally to the Fama French factors, but we obtain mixed evidence for higher-order market factors, liquidity factors or factors constructed from national income accounts, including pricing kernels. This paper develops a …

The Transformation Of Homeless Adolescent Mothers Into Adult Leaders: Adolescent Pregnancy And Adolescent Reform, Annie Ware

All Capstone Projects

This phenomenological investigation recruited six female leaders using a convenient sampling method from social media connections and Governors State University’s graduate student distribution email lists to recruit leaders who were once homeless teenage mothers and resided in residential homeless shelters, foster families or without stable living arrangements. The women ranged in ages from 22 to 52. There was no restriction on race, ethnicity, or religion. The study included all women who were once homeless teenage mothers, yet ultimately attained a level of leadership within their chosen profession. Data uploaded into NVivo 11 from surveys and interviews were transcribed and coded …

Steel Samba:A Tale Of Four Bridges Connecting A City, Ruqayyah Jaami’ Mccallum Jan 2017

Steel Samba:A Tale Of Four Bridges Connecting A City, Ruqayyah Jaami’ Mccallum

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Steel Samba is a photographic mosaic exploration of four lift bridges connecting the east and west sides of Joliet, Illinois. Using the artist influence of Claude Monet’s 1872 image Le Pont de bois (the wooden bridge), I have created digital images of these bridges from many different views. The purpose of this series is to focus on these bridges: their history; their beauty; and how they move in sync to raise for waterway traffic almost in a dance formation.

The Necessity Of Fundamental Math In College, Spencer A. Mcduffy, Sr. Jan 2017

The Necessity Of Fundamental Math In College, Spencer A. Mcduffy, Sr.

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the status of developmental math courses in higher education settings, particularly community colleges, which are designed to increase the likelihood of student success in credit math classes. Non-credit remedial mathematics courses have a long curricular history in community college and university settings. The following discussion will examine the numerous contributing factors impacting the requirements of developmental education in postsecondary settings, while placing specific emphasis on the necessity for a math literate population, as most college students must take at least one course to earn a degree or credential. To improve student persistence …

Protecting Systems Of Nature And Gender: Ecofeminism In Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer And Ruth Ozeki's All Over Creation, Sarah J. Hirsch

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Ecofeminism has permeated the disciplines of politics, philosophy, science, and literature – all of which are embedded in the fiction of Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer and Ruth Ozeki’s All Over Creation. In this thesis, I consider the authors’ use of scientific evidence to engage readers with their rhetorical goals of protecting the systems of nature and gender. In the first chapter, I define the history of ecofeminist activism and how Kingsolver and Ozeki continue its tradition. The second chapter considers the parallels between biodiversity and cultural diversity within both Prodigal Summer and All Over Creation. In the final chapter, I …

Various instruments such as the Mathematical Anxiety Ratings Scale (MARS), the …

Courtesy Paratexts, Informal Publishing Norms And The Copyright Vacuum In Nineteenth-Century America, Robert Spoo Jan 2017

Courtesy Paratexts, Informal Publishing Norms And The Copyright Vacuum In Nineteenth-Century America, Robert Spoo

Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works

In response to the failure of U.S. copyright law to protect foreign authors, nineteenth-century American publishers evolved an informal practice called the “courtesy of the trade” as a way to mitigate the public goods problem posed by a large and ever-growing commons of foreign works. Trade courtesy was a shared strategy for regulating potentially destructive competition for these free resources, an informal arrangement among publishers to recognize each other’s wholly synthetic exclusive rights in otherwise unprotected writings and to pay foreign authors legally uncompelled remuneration for the resulting American editions. Courtesy was, in effect, a makeshift copyright regime grounded on …

Washing Machine Races, Gulag Pizza, And Mc Lenin: Kitsch-Ification In Post Socialist Hungary, Lisa Pope Fischer Jan 2017

Washing Machine Races, Gulag Pizza, And Mc Lenin: Kitsch-Ification In Post Socialist Hungary, Lisa Pope Fischer

Publications and Research

During the cold war, material culture could symbolically mark conflicts between the East and West. Lenin, Marx, the sickle and hammer symbolized communist strength. Household items and electronics were marveled at as new and advanced in contrast to the Western capitalist exotic “Other.” In Hungary today these symbols become Communist kitsch that can undermine former tensions and illustrate a collective ambivalence towards the post-socialist condition by (1) reinterpreting time and space, (2) symbolizing the cold war ‘other,’ (3) creating fantasized spaces, (4) and by representing a generational divide. Making former symbols of Communist strength ‘kitschy’ illustrates a mockery of the …

The paper proposes a combined use of the Semantic MediaWiki extension and the RelFinder for visualization of semantic relationships, which could assist researchers …

As Good As Niu: Food Sovereignty In Samoa, Emily Gove Jan 2017

As Good As Niu: Food Sovereignty In Samoa, Emily Gove

Honors Theses

Samoa’s history as an island nation, with its cultural heritage of migratory peoples, followed by settler colonialism and missionaries, has resulted in its uniquely amalgamated food system. Cuisine varies from traditional crops and recipes to imported canned goods, although dependence on the latter has led to wide-ranging health problems. A way to confront these problems is through reclaiming local cuisine, renewing its popularity and promoting the concept of food sovereignty. Through fieldwork based on surveys, interviews, and participant observation in Apia, complemented with a study of activist Robert Oliver’s new cookbooks on Pacific cuisine, this project examines current themes …

From New York To The World : The American Jewish Committee And The Meaning Of India, 1945-1956, Ryan Charles Mcevoy Jan 2017

From New York To The World : The American Jewish Committee And The Meaning Of India, 1945-1956, Ryan Charles Mcevoy

Honors Theses

In the 1940s and early 1950s, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) sought to develop an international vision in response to a world in flux. This project represents the first attempt to triangulate the relationship between India, Israel, and Jewish-American civil society, employing the case of India as a means for understanding the way in which the AJC shaped its worldview in the decade after World War II. Although Americans had been in contact with India well before the war, the AJC brought with it a unique lens for constructing meaning out of a new postcolonial space. A variety of factors …

Toward A Scientific Investigation Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Anh Tran Jan 2017

Toward A Scientific Investigation Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Anh Tran

Honors Theses

This thesis does not assume the reader is familiar with artificial neural networks. However, to keep the thesis concise, it assumes the reader is familiar with the standard Machine Learning concepts of training set, validation set, and test set [1]. Their usage is intended to help ensure that the Machine Learning system can generalize its training from input examples used during its training to “similar” kinds of examples never used during its training.

The concept of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is one of the most successful computational concepts today for solving image classification problems. However, CNNs are difficult and …

Improving Syntactic Parsing Of Clinical Text Using Domain Knowledge, Min Jiang Jan 2017

Improving Syntactic Parsing Of Clinical Text Using Domain Knowledge, Min Jiang

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Syntactic parsing is one of the fundamental tasks of Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, few studies have explored syntactic parsing in the medical domain. This dissertation systematically investigated different methods to improve the performance of syntactic parsing of clinical text, including (1) Constructing two clinical treebanks of discharge summaries and progress notes by developing annotation guidelines that handle missing elements in clinical sentences; (2) Retraining four state-of-the-art parsers, including the Stanford parser, Berkeley parser, Charniak parser, and Bikel parser, using clinical treebanks, and comparing their performance to identify better parsing approaches; and (3) Developing new methods to reduce syntactic ambiguity …

Understanding Pubmed Search Results Using Topic Models And Interactive Information Visualization, Zhiguo Yu Jan 2017

Understanding Pubmed Search Results Using Topic Models And Interactive Information Visualization, Zhiguo Yu

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

With data increasing exponentially, extracting and understanding information, themes and relationships from larger collections of documents is becoming more and more important to researchers in many areas. PubMed, which comprises more than 25 million citations, uses Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to index articles to better facilitate their management, searching and indexing. However, researchers are still challenged to find and then get a meaningful overview of a set of documents in a specific area of interest. This is due in part to several limitations of MeSH terms, including: the need to monitor and expand the vocabulary; the lack of concept coverage …

"It's Oil And Water": Race, Gender, Power, And Trauma In Vu Tran's Dragonfish, Quan-Manh Ha, Chase Greenfield

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes in-depth the interplay between race, gender, power, and trauma in Vu Tran’s debut novel, Dragonfish. We argue that Dragonfish focuses on the relationships, desires, and conflicts among its three protagonists—Robert, Suzy, and Sonny—to highlight how their postwar interactions complicate race, gender, trauma, and remembrance. The three protagonists engage in an intense socio-political struggle for dominance and control, which is riddled with irony, heart-wrenching pain, and misleading appearances. They experience hardship and loss, but they rely on each other for recovery from past and present trauma, and to advance their own varying personal priorities and agendas: …

Scientific Literacy Matters: Using Literature To Meet Next Generation Science Standards And 21st Century Skills, Cynthia Tomovic, Sueanne Mckinney, Clair Berube

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Scientific literacy matters. It matters because it is vitally important to the education and development of America’s children, tomorrow's workforce, and the keepers of our future. If the future of American individual decision making, engagement in civic and cultural affairs, and valuable contributions to economic development is to be protected, it is critical that American students become more scientifically literate than they are today. Today, most Americans, including students, are considered scientifically illiterate. Recognizing the need to develop and enhance scientific literacy (also known as science literacy), science educators have worked diligently at developing new science standards, new approaches to …

The purpose of this design case is to share our journey in designing, constructing, and integrating authentic personas for the open education resources designers.

Sustainable Production Framework For Cement Manufacturing Firms: A Behavioural Perspective, Sj Childe Jan 2017

Sustainable Production Framework For Cement Manufacturing Firms: A Behavioural Perspective, Sj Childe

Plymouth Business School

Understanding sustainable production is becoming increasingly important for production and operations managers, mainly due to a shortage in natural resources. Sustainability requires many changes in behaviour at all levels. Few studies within the sustainable production literature have empirically disentangled the underlying behavioural concepts of sustainable production. To address this gap, this study utilizes the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) to develop a theoretical framework to explain sustainable production behaviour. Survey data gathered from 128 Indian cement manufacturing units suggest that attitude, subjective norms or social pressures and perceived behavioural control are predictors of the intention for sustainable production which then …

Hyphenated Japan: Cross-Examining The Self/Other Dichotomy In Ainu-Japanese Material Culture, Jonathan Chira Shapiro Jan 2017

Hyphenated Japan: Cross-Examining The Self/Other Dichotomy In Ainu-Japanese Material Culture, Jonathan Chira Shapiro

Honors Papers

This is a historical ethnography that examines how shifts Japanese national identity and values of homogeneity have affected Japan’s minority Ainu population. I argue that the symbolic position of Ainu culture has historically been rearranged to suit prevailing ideas about Japanese nationality and culture without input from Ainu. Using theoretical understandings of Self-Other dichotomies, I examine the particular way these practices manifested in Meiji Japan to create modern Japanese national identity, and how these functioned both against the West and people colonized by Japan. From there, I look at how cultural nationalism was objectified as present from time immemorial in …

The Abortion Burden: Examining Abortion Access, Undue Burden And Supreme Court Rulings In The United States, Tyler E. Sloan Jan 2017

The Abortion Burden: Examining Abortion Access, Undue Burden And Supreme Court Rulings In The United States, Tyler E. Sloan

Honors Papers

This thesis’s driving argument is that the Court’s shift from focusing on analyzing abortion cases with strict scrutiny to using the undue burden standard allows states to create legally permissible loopholes that restrict the fundamental right to abortion access. These provisions disproportionately affect low-income women, the majority of whom are women of color in the United States. Conservative state legislatures take drastic measures to prevent abortions from occurring since Roe still holds, but instead of stopping abortions altogether these policies simply make it difficult for the most vulnerable communities to terminate unwanted pregnancies. Recall the three most commonly cited reasons …
