Polyploidy And Hybridization Have A Role In Plant Distribution In The United States: A Bioinformatics Study, Andrea Ortiz
Polyploidy And Hybridization Have A Role In Plant Distribution In The United States: A Bioinformatics Study, Andrea Ortiz
Biology Theses
Introduction: Polyploidy is the doubling of a genome. Autopolyploidy and allopolyploidy are two different modes of genome duplication. These events are common in angiosperms and usually involve diploids and tetraploids, a resulting polyploid species. Both cytotypes exhibit competitive exclusion and environmental adaptation according to their spatial distributions. My research focuses on how abiotic environmental factors affect the range and the amount of range overlap of the taxon within the Callisia graminea and Allium canadense systems over time. Niche modeling determines whether there is substantial niche overlap between the Callisia graminea diploid and tetraploid, whether range shifts occur between the Callisia …

Sainte Anne's Retreat Legend Tripping, Dylan Cahoon
Sainte Anne's Retreat Legend Tripping, Dylan Cahoon
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
I first heard of the nunnery when I was a freshman in 2012. Me and a friend met some people in a parking lot who said they were going to a haunted nunnery and invited us to go with. We rode up the canyon in the back of their truck and all I remember is getting out, walking around with phone flash lights and looking at old abandoned buildings. I don't remember who I was with or any of the story behind the nunnery.
My sophomore year I met Dylan Cahoon and my life was forever changed. We drove up …

Saint Anne's Retreat Legend Trip, Dylan Cahoon
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
Every student that goes to USU hears the story of the Nunnery. How its haunted by the spirits of babies that were drowned in the swimming pool. During our sophomore year we went out to the Nunnery on a dark, rainy night. Which made it much creepier. We had a decent sized group, maybe a dozen or so. We went around looking at the spooky, run-down old buildings. Then we went inside the main building. There were bats flying around and signs that someone been their recently so after some brief exploration we left.
Conducting And Ensemble Direction 1500 To 1800: The Evidence Of Selected Theorists, Mathias Elmer
Conducting And Ensemble Direction 1500 To 1800: The Evidence Of Selected Theorists, Mathias Elmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation discusses writings on conducting and ensemble direction from 1500 to 1800 with a focus on time-beating technique, the development of modern conducting patterns, and the function of the most common types of ensemble direction in the eighteenth century: the Kapellmeister, the keyboardist-leader, the violinist-leader, and the double-leadership. Evidence are writings of selected theorists from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century; all primary sources which are originally written in either German, French, or Italian are revised and presented with a side-by-side English translation. The examination on time-beating includes treatises from 1532 until 1768 by the theorists Martin Agricola, Etienne …

Being-With Dying: Tacit Wisdom Embedded In The Experiences Of Nurses Who Attend To Dying, Virginia L. Burton
Being-With Dying: Tacit Wisdom Embedded In The Experiences Of Nurses Who Attend To Dying, Virginia L. Burton
Dissertations
Dying persons and their family members have needs that are notably unidentified and unmet in the United States today. This is in large part due to health professionals' being unprepared to provide end of life care that assists persons in their transition from dying to death with personal dignity and peace. Martin Heidegger's existential, interpretive phenomenology informed this study, providing the philosophical background, structures, language and metaphors to interpret narratives for patterns of being-with dying.

The purpose of this exploratory case study is to investigate the use of authentic materials through Critical Friends Groups (CFG) in a language preparatory program, at a private university in Turkey. Specifically, the study attempted to identify the perceptions and observed behaviours of native and non-native EFL instructors on the use of authentic materials, find out the potential reasons behind the implementation of authentic materials in their classroom practices and finally, examine the influence of incorporating authentic materials through CFG on classrooms practices as well as teachers’ professional development. The participants were eight EFL instructors offering English courses in the …
Dedan Kimathi On Trial : Colonial Justice And Popular Memory In Kenya’S Mau Mau Rebellion, Julie Macarthur
Dedan Kimathi On Trial : Colonial Justice And Popular Memory In Kenya’S Mau Mau Rebellion, Julie Macarthur
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
The transcript from this historic trial, long thought destroyed or hidden, unearths a piece of the British colonial archive at a critical point in the Mau Mau Rebellion. Its discovery and landmark publication unsettles an already contentious Kenyan history and its reverberations in the postcolonial present.
Perhaps no figure embodied the ambiguities, colonial fears, and collective imaginations of Kenya’s decolonization era more than Dedan Kimathi, the self-proclaimed field marshal of the rebel forces that took to the forests to fight colonial rule in the 1950s. Kimathi personified many of the contradictions that the Mau Mau Rebellion represented: rebel statesman, literate …

(Dis)Appearing Subjects: Managing Violence Through The Discourse Of Bullying, Rachel E. Levitt
(Dis)Appearing Subjects: Managing Violence Through The Discourse Of Bullying, Rachel E. Levitt
American Studies ETDs
In the early 2000’s, “bullying” became the new center of LGBTQ justice organizing. As part of this development a bullied subject emerged. This bullied person on whose behalf liberation was being sought took various forms from the bullied school shooter, to the cyberbullying victim, to the bullied suicidal queer. As the subtitle of my dissertation suggests, I focus on “managing violence through the discourse of bullying.” This marks a two part process: how the discourse of bullying manages to do violence and how it manages populations biopolitically. This study tackles one of the core paradoxes that inform the formation of …

Supporting Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Understanding And Coping With Complex Social Emotional Issues, Kaitlyn P. Ahlers, Terisa P. Gabrielsen, Danielle Lewis, Anna M. Brady, April Litchford
Faculty Publications
Core deficits in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) center around social communication and behavior. For those with ASD, these deficits complicate the task of learning how to cope with and manage complex social emotional issues. Although individuals with ASD may receive sufficient academic and basic behavioral support in school settings, supports for dealing with complex social emotional issues are more difficult to access, even though these issues significantly impact student learning. When addressing these challenging social- and emotional-based issues, school and professional personnel need more specific instructional skill sets and resources to effectively and compassionately support students with ASD. In this …

This case study examined whether weekday park usage and PA differ by neighborhood type, across numerous categories of park features, and according to park feature condition and cleanliness. Methods. Direct observation was used to capture the number of users and PA levels within 143 park features in 6 parks (3 urban, 3 suburban) over the course of six weeks. Audits of park environments assessed the type, condition, and cleanliness of all features and amenities. …
