Maternal Autonomy And Child Health Care Utilization: Evidence From Bangladesh, Ashiqul Alam
Maternal Autonomy And Child Health Care Utilization: Evidence From Bangladesh, Ashiqul Alam
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2017
My research looked into the relationship between maternal autonomy and how child health care is utilized in third world countries. I worked with my professor, Dr. Bibhudutta Panda, to specifically look at Bangladesh as our country of interest. The country itself is smaller than Florida but is ranked number 8 for the most populated country. In Bangladesh the infant mortality rate is 6 times more than the US, at 30.7 per 1000 live births and government expenditure is also low. The main reason behind to pick Bangladesh is also that it is a third world country and also a patriarchal …

Dear Reader, Welcome to our journey (of documents). We invite you to follow us through our design process: an iterative learning process of reflective and active learning focused on empathizing, defining, ideating, prototyping, and testing innovations. We have engaged in extensive research about the GVSU Holland campus and the Holland community in order to identify and respond to critical needs. We have come to understand that the campus needs to be a home for transformational and relevant education in order for it to best utilize its current assets and that it needs to do this work by extending an arm …
Population Dynamics Of The Cotton Rat In Southeastern Virginia, Robert K. Rose, Heather Green Salamone
Population Dynamics Of The Cotton Rat In Southeastern Virginia, Robert K. Rose, Heather Green Salamone
Virginia Journal of Science
We used monthly live trapping for 2.5 years to evaluate the life-history features of the most common small mammal, Sigmodon hispidus (hispid cotton rat), in an old field at its northern limit of distribution on the Atlantic Coast. Peak densities, achieved in late autumn or early winter, were among the highest recorded for the species and were more typical of geographically marginal populations rather than of central ones. Unlike some other marginal populations, hispid cotton rats in southeastern Virginia did not lose significant body mass over the winter (when few juveniles were present) and survival in winter was not significantly …

Climate Change, Managed Relocation, And The Risk Of Intra-Continental Plant Invasions: A Theoretical And Empirical Exploration Relative To The Flora Of New England, Jesse Bellemare, Bryan Connolly, Dov F. Sax
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The high rate of anthropogenic climate change projected for coming decades and evidence of low migration ability for many species have led researchers to warn of a looming extinction crisis. This threat is expected to be most acute for small-ranged endemic species, which could see novel climatic conditions develop rapidly across the entirety of their limited geographic ranges. To avoid extinctions, some conservationists have proposed that climateimperiled species might be candidates for "assisted colonization" or "managed relocation" to new regions, outside their historical ranges. One major concern related to managed relocation is the possibility that some relocated species could later …

Time Of Monitoring Influences Detectability And Demographic Estimates Of The Threatened Perennial Spalding's Catchfly (Silene Spaldingii S. Watson), Janice L. Hill, Edward O. Garton
Western North American Naturalist
The Threatened plant Spalding’s catchfly (Silene spaldingii S.Watson) is known to exhibit prolonged dormancy in which individuals survive belowground for one or more years; detection of all aboveground plants is essential for accurate estimates of prolonged dormancy. We conducted 2 long-term demographic studies of Spalding’s catchfly in west central Idaho (2002–2013), following 947 plants in permanent plots for 10 consecutive years. To detect all plants emerging aboveground, we monitored twice each growing season—soon after emergence and at flowering—and searched closely for small, inconspicuous stages. Demographic estimates were based on stage-based transition matrix and mark–recapture analyses. Over 99% of aboveground …

As saltmarsh habitat continues to disappear, understanding the factors that influence the population dynamics of saltmarsh breeding birds is an important step in the conservation of these declining species. Using 5 yrs (2011–2015) of demographic data, we evaluated and compared apparent adult survival and nest survival of Seaside (Ammodramus maritimus) and Saltmarsh (A. caudacutus) sparrows at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey, USA. We determined the effect of site management history (unditched vs. ditched marshes) on adult and nest survival to aid in prioritizing future management or restoration actions. Apparent adult …

The current study investigated whether trust in Atheists moderates the relationship between prejudice against Atheists and belief in a hypothetical Atheists’ witness testimony. Pilot studies revealed that participants do not innately label witnesses who affirm as Atheists and determined that there was no significant difference between ratings of belief in Atheists witnesses in comparison to Christian witnesses. Responses from 185 MTurk participants confirmed that belief in witnesses did not significantly differ between Atheists and Christians. Furthermore, trust did not moderate the relationship between prejudice against Atheists and belief in the Atheist witness. These studies furthered research in distrust against Atheists …

Bayes Estimation Of The Scale Parameter Of The Logistic Distribution Based On Progressive First-Failure Censored Scheme, A. Rashad, M. Mahmoud, M. Yusuf
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper we develop approximate Bayes estimators of the scale parameter of the logistic distribution, based on a new life test plan called a progressive first-failure censored plan introduced by [22]. We consider the maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference of the unknown parameter of the model, as well as the reliability and hazard rate functions. Lindley’s approximation [12] and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods such as importance sampling procedure are applied. The Bayes estimators have been obtained relative to both symmetric (squared error) and asymmetric (linex and general entropy) loss functions. Finally, to assess the performance of the …

Transforming Families: The Effects Of Familial Social Support And Belongingness On The Health Identity Development Of Trans Youth, Maggie Elinson
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
"TRANSforming Families: The Effects of Familial Social Support and Belongingness on the Healthy Identity Development of Trans Youth" focuses on the dual transitioning process that both trans children and their families experience. This process is examined through the recognition of psychological processes that affect both the trans child and family's perception of themselves and others. This literature review also assesses the challenges and rewards in providing support to trans children, via the perspective of parents. Included are successful navigations of negative reactions towards the transitioning process, which aim to promote equitable and safe spaces for children to grow and thrive …

Catastrophic natural events can have profound impacts on patterns of genetic diversity. Due to the typically unpredictable nature of such phenomena, however, few studies have been able to directly compare patterns of diversity before and after natural catastrophic events. Here, we examine the impacts of a recent volcanic eruption in southern Chile on genetic variation in the colonial tuco-tuco (Ctenomys sociabilis), a subterranean species of rodent endemic to the area most affected by the June 2011 eruption of the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex. To provide a comparative context for interpreting changes in genetic variation in this species, we …

Seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTF) are located in regions with alternating wet and dry seasons, with dry seasons that last several months or more. By the end of the 21st century, climate models predict substantial changes in rainfall regimes across these regions, but little is known about how individuals, species, and communities in SDTF will cope with the hotter, drier conditions predicted by climate models. In this review, we explore different rainfall scenarios that may result in ecological drought in SDTF through the lens of two alternative hypotheses: 1) these forests will be sensitive to drought because they are already …
Roots, Routes, And Religion: Calling Playful Pilgrims To Follow The Way Of Jesus, Pamela Morse
Roots, Routes, And Religion: Calling Playful Pilgrims To Follow The Way Of Jesus, Pamela Morse
Doctor of Ministry
People who own and utilize their second homes frequently live in such a way that they rarely intersect with the local church in either locale, limiting opportunities to follow the Way of Jesus. An understanding of this population can help the church in a resort community to engage these second-home owners. This thesis explores two driving needs of second-home owners: the longing to escape the daily routine found in their primary home community, and the desire to significantly attach to a place of personal meaning. Play is one key way that they meet these desires. Spending rejuvenating time outdoors is …

Birth Control In Context: A Case Study Of Urban Egyptian Women, Farida Ezzat
Theses and Dissertations
Contraceptive choices, as a reflection of agency, inform us about various ways individual women seek particular forms of empowerment, in light of socio-economic, affective, and gender-based constraints. Ultimately, this serves to challenge inflexible conceptualizations of the status of women by calling into question the claim that patriarchy is unequivocally coercive and that women are inescapably disempowered and providing new avenues from where we may begin to rethink female agency and empowerment.
The Process Of Power: A Process-Oriented Approach To Dissecting A Group’S Political Power, Pat Andriola
The Process Of Power: A Process-Oriented Approach To Dissecting A Group’S Political Power, Pat Andriola
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
Minority groups receiving protection under the Fourteenth Amendment must typically show that they have little "political power," the idea being that the judiciary ought not step in on their behalf if there are legislative outlets available to them. But how should a court determine whether a group is politically powerful (or powerless)? This article argues that the typical indicia of political power relied on by the courts are unwisely based on political outputs, or what minority groups strive for (such as laws in their favor), rather than political inputs, or the things that determine whether groups can get political outputs …
Early Sixteenth Century Caddo Population Distributions, Timothy K. Perttula
Early Sixteenth Century Caddo Population Distributions, Timothy K. Perttula
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Milner’s (2015:Figure 2.1) summary of the distribution of Native American population aggregates in eastern North America in the early sixteenth century depicts much of the southern Caddo area (of southwestern Arkansas, northwestern Louisiana, southeastern Oklahoma, and East Texas) as being sparsely settled or uninhabited in the early sixteenth century. Rather, as attested to by many years of archaeological investigations of a variety of Caddo sites across the southern Caddo area, as well as the 1542 accounts of the de Soto-Moscoso entrada, the distribution and density of Caddo farming groups and communities reached its full and peak extent at around this …

Does Forest Extent Affect Salamander Survival? Evidence From A Long‐Term Demographic Study Of A Tropical Newt, Anthony Lau, Nancy E. Karraker, David Dudgeon
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Forest loss has been associated with reduced survival in many vertebrates, and previous research on amphibians has mostly focused on effects at early life stages. Paramesotriton hongkongensis is a tropical newt that breeds in streams but spends up to 10 months per year in terrestrial habitats. Populations are threatened by habitat degradation and collection for the pet trade, but the cryptic terrestrial lifestyle of this newt has limited our understanding of its population ecology, which inhibits development of a species‐specific conservation plan. We conducted an eight‐year (2007–2014) mark–recapture study on four P. hongkongensis populations in Hong Kong and used these …

Confidence In Government And Attitudes Toward Bribery: A Country-Cluster Analysis Of Demographic And Religiosity Perspectives, Serkan Benk, Bahad?R Yüzba??, Robert W. Mcgee
College of Business and Economics
In this study, we try to classify the countries by the levels of confidence in government and attitudes toward accepting bribery by using the data of the sixth wave (2010-2014) of theWorld Values Survey (WVS). We are also interested in which demographic, attitudinal, and religiosity variables affect each class of countries. For these purposes cluster analysis, linear regression analysis, and ordered logistic regression analysis were used. The study found that countries could be grouped into two clusters which had varying levels of opposition to bribe taking and confidence in government. Another finding was that certain demographic, attitudinal, and religiosity variables …
Development Of Ethics Education Guidelines For Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Programs, Kaitlynn Cullen
Development Of Ethics Education Guidelines For Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Programs, Kaitlynn Cullen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Context: Since 2007, much of the literature has determined a need for recognition and resolution of ethical situations in the athletic training profession. Existing demographic studies suggest areas of improvement for athletic training education program (ATEP) ethics curriculum, however, little has been accomplished within the past nine years. The athletic training field has not addressed specific guidelines needed to teach ethics courses or an appropriate curriculum for the undergraduate ATEP setting. Educational guidelines should be developed for ethics education in undergraduate ATEPs. Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop guidelines for ethics education in undergraduate ATEPs. Design: This …

An Investigation Of Elementary School Principals' Self-Efficacy Beliefs, Their Goal Expectations Of Student Achievement, And Their Impact On Student Achievement, Paul D. Schrik Sr.
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This quantitative study investigated elementary school principals' self-efficacy beliefs, goal expectations of student achievement and their impact on student achievement. To achieve this objective 205 elementary principals completed an electronic survey. The survey consisted of two parts, the Principal Self-Efficacy Survey (Tchannen-Moran & Garies, 2004), and a demographic questionnaire. A modified version of Bandura's social cognitive theory (1977) was the lens used to conceptualize this study. In this framework self-efficacy beliefs and goal expectations were considered to act independently of one another (Pajares, 1996) in reference to actual outcomes. Completed data sets were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t --tests, ANOVA …
